The Wizards Features Epic Spellbinding Action Mixed With Adventure And Exploration

When we first reported on The Wizards, the latest VR game from Carbon Studios (creators of Alice VR) we were excited to see what it would be like to dive into the richly detailed fantasy world. Whereas in Alice everything was controlled with a traditional gamepad, The Wizards takes full advantage of motion controls.

Other spell-based games like The Unspoken pit two battling mages against one another, but in The Wizards, you get to be the star of the show. Visually, it’s quite stunning, and the spell effects are really impressive. The studio’s experience really shines through and the presentation was always one of the best parts in their previous project.

The game has different Regions with different gameplay mechanics,” explains Paweł Gajda of Carbon Studio in an email to UploadVR. “The first part of the game has sort of an adventure exploration plus arena battle gameplay. You use teleportation to move around the levels through the whole game, then you have a more wave shooter / tower defense sequence and then comes the Region with dungeon crawling style gameplay. Each region is divided into Stages then you can play many times and use Fate Cards to modify the rules. We want the players to compete with their high scores. The game will feature two regions on the Early Access release and then we’ll add at least two more regions before the full release.”

In the footage above you can see the “wave shooter” region of the game in action, but it sounds like more content is planned at least. As you progress through the game you’ll gain the ability to alter, update, and modify your spells, helping establish a sense of progression throughout the adventure.

Take a Look at Carbon Studios’ The Wizards in New Screenshots

Last week, Carbon Studios announced that The Wizards will be coming to Steam Early Access this summer, complete with support for the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift with Oculus Touch. A debut trailer also arrived at that time, and now VRFocus can bring you a small selection of new screenshots from the videogame.

Developed with Unreal Engine 4, The Wizards is a virtual reality (VR) exlcuisve title designed to be played with motion-controllers. Much like Insomniac Games’ well received The Unspoken, players will use either the HTC Vive controllers or Oculus Touch to weave spells through gesture-based input.

The new screenshots from The Wizards follow below. VRFocus will be sure to keep you updated with this promising VR videogame as it approaches its Steam Early Access debut later this year.

Carbon Studio’s The Wizards Coming to Steam Early Access this Summer

At the beginning of the year Carbon Studio, the team behind ALICE VR, announced its followup virtual reality (VR) project The Wizards. Today the studio has unveiled the first gameplay trailer for the title, as well as confirming a launch window.

The Wizards will be coming to HTC Vive and Oculus Rift and Touch this summer via Steam Early Access. Currently it’s still to early to tell how long the title will be in early access or what features will be include for the initial release.

Specifically designed for motion controls, The Wizards is a spellcasting experience in which players step into the shoes of a young sorcerer who must defend the realm from legions of rampaging monsters. Solely single-player, The Wizards allows a player to cast all sorts of elemental spells, from lightning bolts to fireballs, alongside defensive spells like a shield.

The Wizards features several different options to alter the gameplay experience. A PvE mode allows players to practice their magical skills against waves of enemies before heading into the campaign. Fate Cards change the videogame, making it easier or harder as the player wishes, with corresponding changes to reward values. And online scoreboards are included so everyone can share their spell wielding results.

Below is the first gameplay trailer for The Wizards, giving a small intro into the story before showcasing the action Carbon Studio’s has planned. Set in a rich fantasy world, there’s the castle players will call home, with all manner of books and artifacts to aid in teaching the ways of the mystic arts. Some of the enemies currently shown look like the usual mix of creatures, such as Orcs and goblins, with more likely to be revealed closer to launch.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of The Wizards, reporting back with further updates.

New Screenshots for The Wizards Revealed

Earlier this week VRFocus reported on Carbon Studio unveiling its follow up virtual reality (VR) project to ALICE VR, called The Wizards. At the time a sort teaser trailer was released, now there’s some screenshots to take a look at.

The following images certainly showcase more of the video game that the short teaser did, with inside shots of library one of which shows a magical book and table, most likely where players learn new spells.

Carbon Studio stated in its original announcement that The Wizards would be single-player although the third image does showcase two wizards fighting side by side. A possible planned co-op option perhaps?

The final screenshot is the only one showing true in game combat, with the player about to use some fire magic on an unwary opponent.

‘Alice VR’ Dev Returns With Spell-Casting Adventure ‘The Wizards’

‘Alice VR’ Dev Returns With Spell-Casting Adventure ‘The Wizards’

Despite it’s engrossing atmosphere and engaging story, we didn’t really take to Carbon Studio’s Alice VR [Review: 4/10]. Preview builds suggested it could be great, but the final product was ultimately a little dated and too much to be desired.

The developer itself still holds promise, though, and we’re optimistic about its next game.

That game is The Wizards, and it sounds like Carbon is catching up a little with the current trends in VR while making it. Cast as a time-traveling young wizard, you’re tasked with protecting the Realm of Men, and you’ll use the Vive wands or Oculus Touch controllers to do so.

The Wizards is all about spell-casting. It’s a first-person game in which you can summon lightning, fireballs, and other elemental spells to take down enemies in horde-style levels. There’s no gameplay footage yet, but there are a handful of in-game screenshots and the CG video above, which look to offer a fantastical experience. Fans of The Unspoken that wished for a single-player game mode have something very promising to get excited about here.

Carbon came up with the idea for The Wizards during a game jam organized by Epic Games and Nvidia last October, around the time that Alice VR launched. The team devised a prototype in which a spell-casting hero held off waves of enemies. To that, Carbon is adding a Fate Cards system, which modifies the game’s difficulty in exchange for rewards, letting players customize their own experience. It’s being built with Epic’s Unreal Engine 4.

The game’s due for release on Vive and Rift later this year. A possible PlayStation VR version as not been mentioned; Alice VR didn’t make it over to the platform either, at least not yet.

It’s encouraging to see Carbon move up to motion controls, as Alice arrived as a gamepad-based exploration game at a time that Oculus owners were gearing up for Touch and Vive users had been enjoying room-scale tracking for a few months already. Hopefully The Wizards will show what this studio is really capable of.

Carbon Studio Unveils Next VR Project The Wizards

Last year Carbon Studio released its first virtual reality (VR) videogame ALICE VR for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and OSVR. Today the studio announced its next VR project, this time with a magical theme, The Wizards.

In The Wizards players take on the role of a young wizard traveling through time, fighting hordes of enemy forces along the way with magic. A single-player experience created using Unreal Engine 4, The Wizards allows players to weave elemental spells with their hands using motion controllers, unleashing lightning, fireballs and more.

Alongside spells to learn that can also be upgraded, the video game adds game-modifying Fate Cards. These can increase replayability and accessibility, changing the titles difficulty and rewards.

Due for release in 2017, The Wizards will support Oculus Rift and HTC Vive head-mounted displays (HMDs). Checkout the first teaser trailer below and for further coverage of The Wizards, keep reading VRFocus.
