Top Ten AR Videogames

AR Game Montage

Augmented reality (AR) is one of the more interesting technologies our smartphones can handle with ease. At first, it felt like a bit of a gimmick, but in the right hands, it can add a lot to gaming. Whether you prefer to stay home and solve puzzles, or roam the area battling or catching creatures, there’s something out there for you. VRFocus has put together a list of some of the best AR infused videogames you can play right now.

Pokemon Go Trainer Battles

Pokemon Go!

It wouldn’t be an AR list without Pokemon Go!, would it? The game that got everyone outside in the summer of 2016 has been using AR technology since the outset. What started with Pokemon placed within the world you inhabited, has become a robust system with avatars that interact while your physical self stands around tapping the screen in a gym or raid battle. AR features are integral to Pokemon Go!, particularly the map view which tracks not only yourself but the gyms, pokemon and pokestops along the route; using photos and location services along with the accelerometer to interact with the fantastical world Niantic Labs have created.

The Birdcage

The Birdcage, and its sequel, are beautiful puzzle games that place the central puzzle within your home space. Aiming the camera, you can place the titular birdcage in the centre of a room. The task is to open the enclosure and free the bird by solving puzzles attached to the cage. Utilising your phone’s camera, the perspective can be changed by moving closer or further, and even around the cage. There are lots of switches to flick, dials to turn and word puzzles to move through the steps. The Birdcage looks and sounds gorgeous and is perfectly taxing on the brain; think The Room but in your room.

Angry Birds AR: Isle of Pigs

Angry Birds had its time in the sun quite some time ago, but recent entries have tried to implement the winning formula onto new technologies. Dabbling in VR (where applicable) and this AR entry, the mechanics feel fresh again. Angry Birds AR: Isle of Pigs opens and asks you to place the traditional looking level on a nearby table (or on the floor). Everything is recognisable – towers and buildings made from blocks with chubby pigs standing by. On your phone, you’ll have a direct view of a catapult, into which the familiar birds jump and can be fired at the puzzle. Watching the blocks and pigs tumble about is joyous and it fits within the AR space ideally. A great game for everyone, but kids will love it!

Angry Birds AR Structure Destroyed

Draw a Stickman: AR

There’s something wonderful about drawing an object on your phone and watching it come to life. With Draw a Stickman: AR, that’s the first step. Your stickman can be as simple or lavish as you want. Once they’re created, an RPG style world is displayed on the floor or surface of your table and you can tap where your stickman needs to go. What comes next is a simple RPG, full of monsters and dungeon crawling… and more drawing! This adds a nice flair to the game, and watching everything pop up in a 3D space through your phone never gets old.

The Walking Dead: Our World

It’s been a few years since TWD: Our World was released and in that time, enthusiasm for zombies has waned a little. Don’t let that stop you from trying this AR gem, though. If one of your daydreams has been how you would deal with a zombie outbreak, now is your chance to live that out. There are walkers roaming your neighbourhood – with maps from Google – and they need to be put down. With legends from the TV show to recruit, you can search out stashes of items and weapons ready to fight it out with the shambling terrors. There are plenty of missions to take on, including saving survivors and holding off rival NPCs, so there’s a lot of variety in this apocalyptic world.

Five Night’s at Freddy’s AR: Special Delivery

The tenth overall instalment in the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise, it’s time to be scared again. Well, only if creepy, broken, furry robots are your nightmare fuel. There are still puzzles to solve and horrors to avoid, except this time the animatronics are in your home! Played in first-person perspective, the jump scares will get you every time. Thankfully combat is an option, and bashing the demonic beasts has never felt more satisfying. The videogame received a lot of content updates, so anyone jumping in now will have plenty to do.

Pikmin Bloom

Pikmin Bloom

Also from Niantic Labs, comes another Nintendo property in Pikmin Bloom. Some liken this title to a gamified fitness app, as there is no deep gameplay aspect like other AR games on this list. Pikmin Bloom encourages users to leave their homes, walk their local areas and this is reflected in collecting seeds along your route and hatching them into cute Pikmin. Features from the console counterpart have been implemented – like Oliver’s ship log, which is now a daily tracker with photos and captions – to create a richer world.

The Witcher: Monster Slayer

In summer 2021, a surprising AR game popped up on app stores. The Witcher: Monster Slayer is a remarkably enjoyable extension of the Witcher universe. Much like Pokemon Go! the player explores the local neighbourhood battling monsters within the AR world overlaid onto a scale map of your area. Here, instead of using cute creatures, your finger swipes are translated into sword swings and spells to destroy the horrific monsters plaguing the land. A great inclusion are story-driven quests which expand the lore within the games (and the books) and give you a good sense of progression, alongside earned XP and new items to unlock as wander the streets.

Ghostbusters Afterlife: ScARe

Released in conjunction with the latest Ghostbusters movie, this AR app is wonderful jumping on point for the Ghostbusters universe. Packed with puzzles, flying objects possessed by new and familiar ghosts which require ‘busting’ and lots of footage to guide the light story along. This is a great app for kids who can explore their home, or even a local park, while looking for ghosts. There’s something spectacular in swiping and moving the phone to control the stream of the proton pack and wrangle the spectral monsters and slam them into the trap.

Doors: Awakening

Much like The Birdcage above, Doors: Awakening uses your immediate space to position an object bursting with puzzles. In this instance, it’s a door. If you don’t feel like walking back and forth across your living room, you can place these doors on a table and spin them using swipes on the screen. Doors: Awakening has a spooky atmosphere delivered by luscious graphics which bring a real sense of otherworldly adventures to our world. The puzzles aren’t overly difficult, the main reason to play is the visual spectacle it brings to our world.

The Walking Dead: Our World Adds new Missions to Celebrate Season Nine of the TV Series

Augmented reality (AR) videogame The Walking Dead: Our World launched a few months ago, bringing the TV series to life like never before. Season nine of AMC’s The Walking Dead is due to premiere soon and to celebrate that fact Next Games will be releasing exclusive missions to coincide.

The Walking Dead Our World - Screenshot

Following the premiere of each new episode of The Walking Dead, the AR videogame will feature new and exclusive missions, themed after the new episodes. Upon completion of these missions players will be guaranteed TV show characters as rewards, including single-encounter missions and Infestations to earn even greater prizes. New missions will become available every Monday on a weekly basis.

“We are very excited to bring the show and the mobile game together with the exclusive missions in The Walking Dead: Our World. For the duration of the season, fans can tune in to watch the show, and play all new Season 9-themed missions every week. We will let players experience the apocalypse first-hand in their everyday life and familiar surroundings and play to get their favorite show characters on their side,” said Saara Bergström, CMO, Next Games in a statement.

Compatible with iOS and Android devices, The Walking Dead: Our World is powered by Google Maps, enabling the game map to showcase the action anywhere players go, including world-famous landmarks and buildings such as the Statue of Liberty, the London Eye and Burj Khalifa.

“The AMC Games team can’t wait for fans to see what lies in store for their favorite characters when Season 9 of ‘The Walking Dead’ debuts this Sunday. We’ve worked with Next Games to weave upcoming events from the show into the design of the game, giving our fans a unique new platform to interact with the ‘The Walking Dead’ universe,” said Clayton Neuman, VP of Games for AMC. “We will continue to innovate and add new content to expand The Walking Dead: Our World, and the upcoming Season 9 missions are a great next step.”

Additionally, Next Games and AMC have joined forces with actors Michael Cudlitz (Abraham Ford) and Josh McDermitt (Eugene Porter) on a fun series of shorts titled Life after The Walking Dead. The first of which can be seen below. The Walking Dead: Our World Reveals Revenue Success

When it comes to augmented reality (AR) videogames, most people will immediately think of Niantic’s Pokemon Go. That may be set to change, as initial revenue numbers for Next Games’ The Walking Dead: Our World reveal a promising start.

According to a market analysis from Sensor Tower, The Walking Dead: Our World has been downloaded over 1.7 million times, and has reached $8 million (USD) in just 55 days.

The Walking Dead: Our World Google Pixel

The full analysis shows that the US market have contributed the most towards this revenue stream, with 40% of worldwide spending on the title coming from the USA. Germany comes in a distant second, with 14% of revenue coming from German players.

The Walking Dead: Our World functions in a similar way to Pokemon Go, allowing players to see zombies lurking around the real-world streets, where they can be fought either solo or as part of a friends group. There are weekly missions to complete which offer specific rewards, and in addition to killing zombies, players can also rescue survivors and set out to collect character or weapon cards.

The title is powered by Google Maps, which lets the action be specific to your real-world location, even featuring famous landmarks like the Statue of Liberty of the London Eye.

Though the $8 million figure in less than two months is impressive, some critics have pointed out that The Walking Dead: Our World has a smaller potential audience, since the level of violence will make it less accessible for younger or more sensitive players. Others have indicated that the level of The Walking Dead-related media currently available risks putting the fan base at saturation point.

The Walking Dead: Our World could be compared to a similar mobile AR title, Jurassic World Alive, which has amassed 7.6 million downloads by its second month of release, showing $25 million in revenue by its third month.

Release Date for The Walking Dead AR Title Revealed

Last year TV network AMC revealed it was working with videogame developer Next Games to develop one of its biggest properties, zombie drama The Walking Dead, into a new location-tracking augmented reality (AR) title. It has now been revealed when exactly fans of the franchise can expect to see the app arrive.

The Walking Dead: Our World lets players wander around real world locations, using their smartphone cameras to spot Walkers and then fight them off using commands on the screen.

The Walking Dead Our World - Screenshot

Players can also expect to interact with characters from the show like Rick, Michonne and Daryl. There will be ‘stashes’ available to collect, which will contain items that will aid in the fight against the zombies. It has not yet been revealed exactly what those stashes will contain, but most speculation leans towards weapons or tools.

To aid in the fight, characters from the show can be recruited and levelled up and shelters can be built to act as safe havens from the Walker threat. There will be weekly challenges to complete which will offer special rewards for regular players.

The Walking Dead: Our World is scheduled for release on 12th July, 2018, so fans don’t have that long to wait until the title will be available to download on both Android and iOS devices. It’s not yet been confirmed if that app will be free or paid for, and the presence of microtransactions is also yet to be confirmed.

It’s also currently unknown how integral the AR is to the experience, and if it can be disabled as in Pokemon Go so lower spec smartphones can take part.

A quirky teaser trailer has been released by Next Games showing footage of people who look like they are capturing photos, but are in fact taking down zombies. This trailer is available to view below.

Original Content? Na, Just Create an VR/AR Spinoff

When a new entertainment platform arises, one method of testing the waters is to take something popular and create a spin-off for the new platform, to see if fans will follow. Alternatively, a spin-off can let you test out new ideas and mechanics with less risk, something that is particularly true for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). VRFocus examines a few examples of franchises that have now crossed into a more immersive world.

ARK Park

ARK: Survival Evolved attracted immediate attention when it was first revealed, with its fantastically detailed open world and, of course, the perennial fascination that human beings seem to have for dinosaurs. So when Snail Games revealed its VR spin off, there was much interest. This is especially true for players who like a more relaxed experience, since ARK Park has a more gentle, exploratory approach than the title it was originally based on.

The Walking Dead: Our World

Despite many people believing zombie-based media is at saturation point, The Walking Dead has continued to be incredibly popular. Originally starting as a comic book, it was then adapted into a TV show in AMC, where its popularity exploded. The Walking Dead: Our World is still awaiting its official worldwide release, but anticipation for the location-based AR experience is high.

Pokemon Go

Pokemon is a worldwide phenomenon, so it was originally something of a surprise that a tiny company like Niantic Labs were the ones chosen to create the AR mobile app for the franchise, Pokemon Go. Despite repeated technical issues, this still seems to have done fairly well, single-handedly raising the profile for AR around the world.

L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files screenshot

L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files

L.A. Noire was a very impressive release for its time, with its groundbreaking facial scanning and animation technology that tried to create a realistic and absorbing world for the player. As such, it seems like a natural fit for VR. Though the entire game content isn’t available in VR, seven cases are available to solve in VR, with a complete makeover to take advantage of the immersive technology.

Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin

The original Psychonauts came out in 2005, and despite its originally disappointing sales figures it quickly gathered a core of dedicated fans and garnered a reputation as a cult classic. An unexpected Twitter conversation led to talks of a sequel, and also to the creation of a VR ‘mid-quel’ Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin that was originally released on PlayStation VR before getting posted over to SteamVR earlier this year.

Final Fantasy XV: Monster of the Deep

Plenty of Final Fantasy fans viewed the epic road trip of the four pretty boys as something of a return to form for the series, which had been flagging somewhat. Many players sank somewhat more time than is wise into the fishing mini-game. Apparently aimed at those players, that fishing mini-game got the VR treatment in Final Fantasy XV: Monster of the Deep, resulting in some surprisingly absorbing gameplay.

Killing Floor: Incursion

Killing Floor started life as a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004, first seeing life in 2005 before getting an upgrade to a standalone commercial release in 2009. It later received a sequel in 2016. Both the original and its sequel were examples of the ‘wave shooter’ that gained popularity in VR, so a conversion to the VR platform seems like a logical choice. Killing Floor: Incursion was born in 2017, originally for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive before being ported to PlayStation VR this year.

Google Opens ‘Maps’ API So Devs Can Create ‘Pokémon Go’-style Games

During the Google Developer Day presentation at GDC 2018, Product Manager Clementine Jacoby and Engineering Lead Patrick Donelan at Google Maps presented the team’s progress in bringing their technology and data to game developers. Several ‘location-based’ AR games using Google Maps APIs and ARCore are coming to mobile devices this year.

Building large virtual worlds is costly and time-consuming when done by hand. Using the example of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto IV (2008), which remains one of the most expensive and richest game worlds ever created, Jacoby noted that this was, at launch, it only as big as downtown Manhattan (in terms of real-world scale). Google is now offering an easier route, where even small teams can leverage vast, rich geodata through Google Maps APIs.

The team has built an SDK to bring the technology to Unity which “does all the heavy lifting” with “no Google Maps expertise needed to get started,” and helps developers design interactions around real-world places, which presents a unique set of challenges.

“Doing it well requires knowing a lot about the player’s immediate environment and also their larger context,” says Jacoby. “We help you design gameplay around real-world locations so you can choose places that are appropriate, unique, and fun to play, no matter where your players are.”

Donelan demonstrated how the Unity integration can easily turn the bland, untextured geometry of Google Maps building and object data into stylised settings for game experiences using lighting and textures, or even changing the height of the buildings. Then, using the Playable Locations API, you can create a game with missions and spawn points at prominent locations, and have it work anywhere around the world. “We use a vast array of Google Maps signals to determine the best places for gameplay and AR experiences ranked by prominence and popularity,” says Donelan. “You can request points at whatever density your game requires, and fine-tune the way those points are distributed.”

There are additional features to enable richer detail to the environment, such as ‘nine slicing’ for adding custom-sized textures to buildings, decorators to add extra geometry to rooftops, and borders around roads and buildings to simulate ambient occlusion. The SDK also integrates with Unity’s real-time lighting and physics systems.

Donelan then highlighted some well-polished examples created by a single developer in just a few weeks using procedural rules and modular asset packs. Firstly, two stylised views of city environments were shown, zooming down to street level at an impressive level of detail, with Google Maps data informing the procedural rendering in an organic way. In the final example, a vast area of Glacier National Park in Montana was shown, rendered in Unity using Google Maps elevation data, with procedurally generated rocks and vegetation, showing the SDK is not limited to urban environments.

The overall message: it’s easy to harness Google Maps geodata to build rich game experiences that work on a global scale, using gameplay suitable for the real world, and driving players to popular places, or off the beaten path, depending on the style of game. Finally, three games coming in 2018 using ARCore and Google Maps APIs were featured: Jurassic World Alive, Ghostbusters World, and The Walking Dead: Our World.

The Walking Dead: Our World to Integrate Real World Locations From Google Maps

The Walking Dead TV series is still very popular, sprouting all sorts of additional content including several videogames. There’s even an augmented reality (AR) experience coming from Next Games, originally announced last year and demoed to the public for the first time at New York Comic Con (NYCC). Today, the studio – alongside AMC – have revealed that The Walking Dead: Our World will be powered by Google Maps.

The Walking Dead: Our World Combat NonAR

The partnership will see world-famous landmarks, businesses and buildings, such as the Statue of Liberty, the Eiffel Tower, the London Eye, and Burj Khalifa, integrated into the videogame, making exploring surroundings even more interactive and immersive.

“We are excited to partner with Google Maps, inarguably the best maps product in the world. With Google Maps, we can count on providing the most up-to-date location data, meaning that when new buildings or roads are built, we’ll have them in our game. This enables us to create an immersive experience, tied to the players’ location. Google Maps’ unrivalled amount of location data, covering world-famous landmarks, businesses and buildings, such as the Statue of Liberty, the Eiffel Tower, the London Eye, Burj Khalifa and India Gate, makes exploring your surroundings a breathtaking experience,” said Teemu Huuhtanen, CEO, Next Games in a statement.

The Walking Dead: Our World will allow players to fight walkers on the streets, in the park, on their sofa, wherever and whenever they want, alongside characters from the show, including Rick, Daryl, and Michonne. While Google Maps will provide the most up-to-date location data, meaning that when new buildings or roads are built, they’ll be in the videogame.

The Walking Dead: Our World Collect_RC

“We’ve spent the last decade building a comprehensive map of the real world,” adds Clementine Jacoby, Product Manager, Google Maps APIs. “We’re excited to be able to enable companies like Next Games to leverage our data to build rich experiences for their users to enjoy.”

The Walking Dead: Our World is slated to launch globally in Q2 2018. Eager fans can today pre-register via Google Play for selected markets, go to www.thewalkingdeadourworld.com to sign up. Google will also be demoing the AR title at its booth during the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2018 next week. For any further updates for The Walking Dead: Our World, keep reading VRFocus.
