The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution is now available on PlayStation VR2 and PC VR.
Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2 launched last December for Quest 2, featuring some pretty glaring bugs and issues that plagued the initial release. However, two weeks later developers Skydance Interactive patched the game to address those major bugs. In our review, which was published post-patch, we noted that the most severe and game-breaking bugs had seemingly been resolved, but some smaller pop-in issues still remained.
Three months later, the game is available on PC VR and PSVR 2. Players now also have the ability to transfer Chapter 1 save data from Meta, PC and PlayStation platforms to a copy of Chapter 2 on Meta, PC and PlayStation (Pico support for this feature is “arriving later this year”). Skydance also says that a day one patch for this version of the game includes improved environmental lighting, improved NPC animations and rebalanced armored enemies.
Skydance indicated that Retribution features platform-specific visual upgrades on PSVR 2. Exact details of those upgrades weren’t provided, but you can check out some footage in the PSVR 2 and PC VR launch trailer embedded above. On Quest 2, the game looks acceptable with lots of room for improvement – here’s hoping the power of the PS5 lets Skydance push the visual fidelity up on PSVR 2 then.
The PS5 version of Saints & Sinners – Chapter 1 is also now available on PSVR 2, bringing the acclaimed original game to Sony’s latest headset. Those who own the ‘Tourist Edition’ of the original on PS4 will receive the PS5 version for free, while those with the standard edition on PS4 can upgrade for $10. For those who are completely new to the franchise, Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 are also available in a bundle for PSVR 2.
We’re looking forward to checking out Chapter 2 on PSVR 2 this week – fingers crossed this release runs smoother than the Quest version did last December.
Meta just showcased a whole bunch of new titles from coming to Quest 2, including sequels to Boneworks and Espire 1: VR Operative.
Here’s everything announced at the Meta Quest Gaming Showcase
Everything Announced At The Meta Quest Gaming Showcase 2022
The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2
First up, we got a brand new look at The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2 Retribution which, yep, is still an absolute handful to say. A new trailer introduced us to the game’s antagonist and we got a small taste of the new chainsaw weapon in action. It’s coming to Quest 2 and Rift later this year with other platforms still to be confirmed.
NFL Pro Era
We also got a very short teaser for the recently-announced NFL Pro Era, which is coming to Quest 2 and PSVR this year. The game promises to deliver the full football experience in VR, though we only saw very early gameplay today.
Among Us VR
As previously teased, Among Us VR also stopped by for a full-length trailer. The footage gave us an idea of how the iconic party game will work inside of headsets. Still no release date for this one, but it’s coming in the holiday season and will hit Quest, PSVR and PC VR. Developer Schell Games also confirmed a three game partnership with Meta for future titles.
Red Matter 2
Next up, Vertical Robot stopped by with a surprise sequel – Red Matter 2. This follow-up to the VR adventure game takes us back on an intergalactic journey to investigate sinister supernatrual forces, with new mechanics like combat and platforming. It’s coming to Quest 2 this summer.
Espire 2
VR stealth game Espire 1 is getting a full sequel with not one but two campaigns. A single-player story will pick up where the first game left off but there will also be a co-op campaign to bridge the gap between the two. This one’s due for Quest 2 this November.
Moss: Book 2
Just a few weeks on from its launch on PSVR we have confirmation that Quill’s second adventure is coming to Quest 2 this summer. Moss: Book 2 is a fitting follow-up to one of our favorite VR games, and we’ll look forward to seeing how it shapes up on the platform.
RUINSMAGUS
After a rocky road on Kickstarter we finally got further confirmation that RUINSMAGUS will make it to the west later this year. This VR JRPG looks gorgeous and continues to promise great characters and ambitious action. It’ll be releasing on Quest 2 and Steam.
Cities: VR
We also got another look at VR city builder, Cities: VR, before it launches on Quest 2 next week. This is a full spin-off to Cities Skylines with detailed urban management. It’s Quest 2 exclusive for now but other platforms have been teased.
Resident Evil 4 VR
The long-awaited Mercenaries mode is arriving for Resident Evil 4… today! Embody iconic characters from the famed horror shooter and complete challenges to unlock new rewards like a Big Head mode. It’s a free update for existing owners.
Beat Saber Electronic Mixtape
It wouldn’t be a Meta event without new Beat Saber content. The upcoming Electronic Mixtape pack promises to add artists like Rudimental, Pendulum and Deadmau5. Look for it on all platforms soon.
Bonelab
As promised, we finally saw the full reveal of the hugely-anticipated follow-up to Boneworks. Bonelab is another physics-driven action game that expands on the original game’s foundations and promises mod support on both Quest 2 and PC VR. It’ll hit both platforms later this year.
New Home Environment
As not quite the last reveal, Meta also released the Quest Home environment that today’s showcase took place in. But there was time for one final announcement…
Ghosbusters VR
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stopped by to announce something quite unexpected. Phantom and Fracked developer nDreams is developing a cooperative Ghostbusters VR game, published by Sony Pictures Virtual Reality. Team up with up to four friends to wield iconic gadgets and take down bothersome ghosts as you build a new HQ in San Francisco. No word on a release date yet.
And that was the 2022 Meta Quest Gaming Showcase! What did you make of the event? Let us know in the comments below.
It’s been a little over two years since The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners (2020)shambled onto VR headsets, serving up 20+ hours of zombie-slaying nightmare fuel. Now the developers are unveiling more of the upcoming standalone sequel, Chapter 2: Retribution.
The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution lets you continue your journey through the post-apocalyptic world of New Orleans, one that studio says is “even more dangerous than before.”
Unveiled during the Meta Quest Gaming Showcase, we learned that means we can expect fewer resources, more walkers, and what Skydance Interactive calls “a new and bloodthirsty threat that will hunt you across the city.” That sounds like some added pressure to keep you on your toes.
Playing again as ‘the Tourist’, the game is said to feature an original storyline, more patented freedom of choice, and plenty of visceral combat and opportunities for bone-splitting melee.
Chapter 2: Retribution is coming later this year to Quest 2 and PCVR headsets. The studio says other VR platforms will be announced at a later date.
Hello tourist. Your detective skills have been honed during your time in New Orleans. Sounds like you’ll all need to tune in to the Meta Gaming Showcase on 4/20 at 10am PST to learn more!
The video description in the screenshot posted to Reddit also reveals a rough release date – late 2022. While we previously knew that Chapter 2 would release this year, this gives us confirmation that we’re looking at later in the year and not anytime soon.
The description also only mentions that the game is coming to “Meta headsets.” Previously, Quest was the only properly confirmed platform, but that wasn’t to say others – like PSVR 2 – weren’t also on the horizon. However, given this trailer is being prepared for the Meta Gaming Showcase specifically, it’s no surprise that only Meta headsets are mentioned. We wouldn’t take this to be exclusivity confirmation just yet.
Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2 was announced earlier this year. According to the phrasing of all the press materials, it looks like it won’t quite be a full-blown sequel, but still a standalone title that won’t require you to own or have played the first game. Kind of like a standalone expansion, rather than a full follow-up, then?
The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution
Ready for some action? With our list of the best Quest action games, your heart is sure to be pumping in no time.
Assembling a list of the best Quest action games is a little tricky. Lots of games have intense combat at their core, but we already have lists recognizing the best Quest shooters and other types of experiences. For this list, we’ve doubled down on the experiences that have combat but don’t necessarily feel like shooters, perhaps instead focusing on melee, archery or spell-casting. Hopefully there’s a little something for everyone here.
If you need something fast-paced and deadly, Sairento: Untethered should more than fit the bill. Chop up enemies with swords, backflip in slow motion with dual-wielding pistols or shoot off heads with a bow and arrow; Sairento is a frantic mash-up of athletic combat that has kept people coming back time and again over the past few years. It’s an easy choice for the best Quest action games.
Journey Of The Gods
We’re still some ways out from having a full-blown Zelda-like experience in VR but, until we get there, Journey Of The Gods is at least a nice taster of what to expect. Developed by Back 4 Blood studio Turtle Rock, you set out on a quest with sword and shield in hand, fighting monsters and using powers granted by ancient gods. Journey of the Gods offers a fun adventure that’s great for first-time VR users.
There aren’t many actual third-person action games akin to God of War or Bayonetta on Quest. Truth be told it’s not exactly the most natural fit for the platform. But if you are looking for a more traditional action game experience on your headset, your best bet are these two action-adventure titles that offer fun — if simplistic — combat along with other elements like platforming and, in Trover’s case, gross-out humor.
Carbon Studios’ full-on sequel to its spell combat game mixed things up with a full linear single-player story. But The Wizards’ best element is its gesture-based combat system, which sees you summoning shields and fireballs with a flick of the wrist. It works incredibly well and feels genuinely empowering, making for the best magic game on Quest today.
Star Wars: Vader Immortal Lightsaber Dojo | Star Wars: Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge
There’s a lot to appreciate between these two Star Wars titles. While Vader Immortal’s story mode might not have the mechanical depth and complexity to class it as a full game, the Lightsaber Dojo mode more than makes up for it with waves of wish-fulfilling Jedi action. Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge, meanwhile, has a lot of shooter elements but also some incredible other ways to interact with the universe, including more saber combat. There’s just enough here for action fans to take a look at.
It’s a little rough around the edges and there’s still plenty more content to add, but Blade And Sorcery still offers some of if not the best physics-based action on Quest. Wield swords and cast spells in either the game’s wave-based arena mode or the new Dungeons mode, which sees you sneaking through randomized dungeons and brutally gutting foes. Just don’t cast this one to a screen if the kids are about.
You could argue In Death is a shooter but, for our money, it’s a neat fit for the action genre, offering up the best archery combat on Quest. In this roguelite you tackle runs of biblical dungeons, from heavenly churches to the firey pits below. It’s entirely moreish and tough as nails, but best of all it’s still being updated with free content.
It’s on the sillier side of physics-driven action games, but Gorn still offers really, really fun VR combat with a satisfying crunch. Here you take on waves of gladiators in an arena, equipping increasingly elaborate weaponry. Extension decapitation and impalement, Wolverine-style claws, the ability to take out hearts and throw them and deadly honey badgers – Gorn has the lot.
A much more arcade-driven experience than the more realistic physics fighters on this list, Until You Fall offers incredibly tight, well-choreographed action that rarely misses the mark. It’s a roguelite in which you tackle runs of a dungeon, aiming to get a great build for a character as you block sword attacks and prepare to swipe back at enemies. Demanding difficulty and steady progression make Until You Fall a moreish treat.
There’s a lot of shooter mechanics to Saints & Sinners, but the game’s best known for its winning melee combat that earns it a place on our best Quest action games list. You haven’t truly experienced all VR has to offer until you’ve wrestled for control of a zombie’s head and repeatedly mashed a spoon into the side in hopes of reaching the brain. Combine that with a compelling, wide-open campaign and Saints & Sinners offers a heck of a lot.
Note: Obviously there are spoilers for The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Aftershocks included in this article. If you want to go in fresh, best avoid!
What Are The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Aftershocks Keys?
As you play through Aftershocks, which is accessed after the main campaign is over, you should find three keys. Each is a different shape – there’s a square, triangle and circle. They are missable in the campaign, but I found them near cache drops and off of dead enemies too. Once you’ve completed all of Aftershocks’ main objectives, you’ll have just one task: find out what the keys are for.
How Do You Start The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Aftershocks Keys Quest?
Want to complete this quest on your own? Then start here; the game gives you no real direction on how to start off so we’ll just give you the main hit to get the ball rolling. Shine your new UV light inside the bus you sleep in back in the hub area. And off you go!
How Use The Keys In The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Aftershocks?
Okay, time for the meaty explanation. Go inside your bus and shine the UV light on the map. You’ll see the Bastion level has been circled by someone. Seems like a clue, no?
Travel to Bastion and switch on your flashlight once again. With the UV on, you’ll see a message about supplies right in front of you. Walk forwards and you’ll eventually see an arrow on the wall to your left. It leads you out onto the street where you’ll want to head right.
Keep going down the road, you should see more arrows on the floor as you walk. Eventually, you’ll come to a crossroads.
Over on the right side, across the road is a house with a crashed car in the corner. You’ll have visited it earlier in Aftershocks’ campaign, but this is where the three keys need to be used. Again, the UV lights will point you in the right direction but just in case:
The triangle key goes in a cupboard in the kitchen area.
The circle key is behind the toilet in the bathroom.
The square key goes between the bed and desk in the bedroom.
Use all three and you’ll hear a noise. Travel back into the hallway and look for some washing machines. One appears to have shifted. Your prize is just beyond there.
What Do The Keys In The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Aftershocks Unlock?
Okay, now you want the real spoilers? Well, the keys unlock what appears to be a safe room. Unlike the other missions in Aftershocks, the room isn’t loaded with valuable resources to take back to camp (though there is some food). Instead, the room seems to be dropping hints about a new character, one that stayed in the safe room, sports an armored Tower costume and has been doing some pretty meticulous planning. There’s also mention of the historic French Quarter not seen in the game’s existing levels and one letter found on their desk simply reads: “Murderer Tourist”. Sounds like someone doesn’t think very highly of you.
Could Skydance be teasing more DLC for Saints & Sinners? Or is it perhaps giving us the first hints about a full on sequel to the smash hit VR game? Only time will tell.
So there’s how to use the keys in The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Aftershocks. Did we miss anything? Do you have any extra tips? Let us know in the comments below!
As great as The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners’ Aftershocks update, it left us eager to hear what’s next for Skydance Interactive’s hit VR game.
As it turns out, the update drops a few hints itself.
Note: There are spoilers for The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Aftershocks in this article.
Once you’ve completed all of Aftershocks’ main campaign, you’ll be left with just one objective – to find a use for three mysterious keys you collected along the way. Actually figuring out what to do with them is tough (but we have a handy guide to help right here).
You end up using them inside one house in the game’s Bastion map. Doing so unlocks a hidden safe room underground. Inside appears to be hints for what’s next for Saints & Sinners.
The safe house has been used by a mysterious new character. We don’t get to meet them, but there is a large mannequin in the room sporting what looks like armor pried off one of the members of The Tower faction. Crazed, cult-like writing is sprawled over some walls talking of wrath and everyone being guilty. In one area is a sprawling map of New Orleans and the encounters this character seems to have had. They also keep a list of others that have either ‘Betrayed’ or ‘Lied’ to them.
Oh, and flip the list over and there’s a category on it for ‘Murderer’. And, yup, The Tourist is written on it. Eek.
A postcard, meanwhile, displays the message: ‘Greetings From The French Quarter’, referencing one of New Orleans’ most historic areas. On the back it reads: ‘See you soon!’
It certainly seems like Skydance is dropping hints for what’s next, then. Could the studio be hinting at a new DLC expansion that introduces this character and the French Quarter area? Or could we perhaps see a full sequel that uses the district as its setting?
Either way, we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for more.
Aftershocks ticks the box of delivering more of a VR game we’ve been away from for far too long. Read on for our The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Aftershocks review.
It speaks to just how good The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners is that, even after spending 20+ hours with it on multiple platforms and coming back for last year’s Meatgrinder update, I still want a lot more of it. In fact large parts of the game still feel new to me, like I didn’t get to spend enough time with them in the existing campaign. And that’s always been a frustration with Skydance’s zombie game; even as one of VR’s longer titles, it ends before you’re really done with it. And, while the wave-based survival addition was fun, we’re all really looking for more excuses to dive back into its survival sandbox.
Aftershocks finally delivers those excuses, and plenty of them.
The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Aftershocks Review
Aftershocks is essentially the endgame content Saints & Sinners has been missing for the past year. It’s a set of missions that are anchored around a simple premise – boxes of valuable resources have appeared, spread across the game’s existing maps, and it’s up to you to find them. Each mission tells you the map where you’ll find your next cache, but it’s up to you to travel there, seek it out and deal with any threats that might be in your way.
Think of Aftershocks as Saints & Sinners: Remixed, then. Skydance reexamines its current maps and rejigs them with twists both old and new. Existing paths are blocked, enemies occupy new areas and there are some small cosmetic changes too. One cache might be embedded deep within an enemy stronghold, for example, or you may need to navigate a series of tripwires to discover one.
The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Aftershocks Review – The Facts
What is it?: An update to the existing zombie survival game that adds new endgame content. Platforms: Quest, PC VR, PSVR Release Date: September 23rd Price: Free update
Nothing here dramatically changes up the gameplay so much as it does expand upon it. Saints & Sinners was a game about slowly and steadily building an arsenal but, when you finally got the best weapons and the resources to make ammo for them, the ending credits weren’t far off. Now there’s the chance for plenty more high-level play, especially once you open up a cache and are treated to more crafting resources than you’ll find anywhere else in the campaign.
And, seriously, what a reminder of just how brilliant these systems are. Saints & Sinners really is one of the best sandboxes you’ll find in VR; at one moment it slips my mind that a group of enemies I’ve just shot through will reanimate as the undead. They do so just as I’m flanked by another group, providing the unexpected distraction I need to slip away and refuel. Often when you open a cache you’ll find new enemies populate the scene, making extraction just as unpredictable as infiltration was.
The melee, meanwhile, is still tremendous, and I don’t think anyone’s come even close to topping it in the 18 or so months since launch. It is a shame, though, not to see any truly new weapons or tools added to this update. Nothing you’ll find in the supply crates will do much more than replenish your supplies back home. You’ll also encounter the same old issues like the troublesome human AI, which often fails to make sense of a given situation. There is an upgrade to your flashlight that adds an interesting little catch to some of the later levels but, again, this is really Skydance doing the best with the tools it already has more than it is crafting something truly new.
The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Aftershocks Review: Final Impressions
And that’s okay. Aftershocks is, quite simply, more of the Saints & Sinners you love. It extends the game’s original runtime by a few more welcome hours and gives you more excuses to visit Skydance’s stunning zombie sandboxes kitted out as an undead-chopping, Reclaimed-shooting juggernaut. It’s good to be back, even if we’re more than ready for a full sequel.
