Secret Of Retropolis: VR Point-And-Click Hits Oculus Quest Store Tomorrow

After releasing on App Lab earlier this year, VR point-and-click throwback, The Secret Of Retropolis is launching on the official Oculus Quest store tomorrow.

We first wrote about the game from indie studio Peanut Button earlier in 2021 when it released on both Steam and Meta’s experimental storefront. The Secret of Retropolis is a gorgeous-looking throwback to classic adventure games from developers like Lucasarts, set in a retro-futuristic city with a film noir vibe. Check out a trailer below.

The experience is intended to be accessible for first-time VR users, with players solving puzzles using spring-operated arms that can reach out into the environment to grab things. Its assets were also made inside Oculus Quill, resulting in a striking hand-painted look.

We’ve seen a number of App Lab titles make their way over to the official Oculus Quest store of late. The former serves as a means for developers to get their content onto Quest without having to pass the strict curation policies for the full store. Meta has often stressed that success on App Lab doesn’t necessarily mean your app will come to the full store but, clearly, that’s the case for some developers.

This won’t be the last stop for the game. Peanut Button is also working on a port for the HTC Vive Flow, making it one of the few genuine gaming experiences to come to the slim VR headset. No date for that release just yet, though.

Point-and-Click Style Adventure The Secret of Retropolis Coming to PC VR This Summer

The Secret of Retropolis

Those that love classic point-and-click adventures like the Monkey Island series or Grim Fandango should keep an eye out for The Secret of Retropolis an upcoming virtual reality (VR) title coming to PC headsets this summer.

The Secret of Retropolis

The first VR videogame from indie team Peanut Button which formed in 2019, The Secret of Retropolis is a stylish story-driven with plenty of film-noir vibes. The story takes place in the city of Retropolis, which is completely inhabited by robots tasked with keeping humanities past alive.

You’ll step into the role of Philip Log, an ex-cop and alcoholic robot who takes a job from Jenny Montage, a famous robotic movie star who wants you to reacquire a gem stolen by her husband. Of course, there’s more to this shady job than first appears, and as you delve deeper you’ll uncover a conspiracy that affects the entire city.

Featuring environments, items and characters all designed in Oculus Quill, The Secret of Retropolis will be a heavy mixture of zany puzzles interwoven with comedy writing. The gameplay will be nicely tailored to VR, whilst sticking to the theme of the universe. So whilst other VR games utilise a remote grab option, in The Secret of Retropolis you’ll have super extendable robot arms to collect and interact with objects.

The Secret of Retropolis

That’s because The Secret of Retropolis is designed to be a comfortable, seated experience all players can enjoy. More experienced players should find the gameplay fairly casual, much like Vanishing Grace or Stargaze for example.

The Secret of Retropolis is slated for launch on Steam and the Oculus Store for Rift this summer. Watch the official announcement video below and when Peanut Button release further details, VRFocus will let you know.

The Secret of Retropolis Is A Lovely-Looking VR Point-And-Click Adventure

Hankering for some classic LucasArts or Double Fine-style adventuring in VR? The Secret Of Retropolis could be just what the doctor ordered.

This PC VR title is on its way to Steam this summer. It’s an adventure-mystery in which players embody a robot detective that gets hired by a movie star. The game pays tribute to 90’s classics like Full Throttle, getting players to scour environments for key items to solve puzzles. Check out some early gameplay below.

As you might have guessed, the game’s assets were built with Oculus Quill. Not only does Retropolis look very nice on the visual front, it’s got some great ideas for VR, too. As a robot, you can reach out to items in the environment with spring-operated arms, meaning you don’t have to move from your spot. Developer Peanut Button says this is a seated experience that will be ideal for first-time VR players, too. You’ll also be able to interact with fully-voiced characters via a dialogue tree.

That’s about all we know of the title right now, though you can follow a Twitter account for more gameplay clips. As for a final date and chances of Oculus Quest and PSVR versions? We’ll keep an eye out, but no word just yet. Peanut Button also has some other experiences to check out on its website, if you’re looking for more from the developer.
