The Rig: A Starmap to Murder – Sunset Division

The first VR videogame from indie studio Sunset Division, The Rig: A Starmap to Murder has been inspired by classic point-and-click adventures from the ’90s. The Rig: Starmap to Murder

A lot of the virtual reality (VR) industry is made up of passionate developers either working solo or in small teams. San Francisco-based Sunset Division is an indie team of four who’ve been working on space-noir adventure The Rig: A Starmap to Murder for several years. That comes to an end when the videogame launches in a week’s time.

The Rig: Starmap to Murder

Inspired by classic point-and-click adventures from the ’90s, The Rig: A Starmap to Murder is a story-driven experience set in 2132. You play a Mars-based travel agent called Willard Pike who’s been tasked by his sister-in-law to find his estranged, deadbeat brother Dixon.

In doing so you have to travel to the farthest reaches of space by exploring a small space-freighter as it journeys to a remote, ominous mining rig attached to the side of an asteroid. As this is a murder mystery you’ll need to unravel events by striking up conversations and solving puzzles.

All the gameplay takes place on the frigate, a fully lived-in, explorable starship designed to provide a fully interactive experience. Puzzles will be story-centric and environmental, requiring simple and more convoluted solutions.

The Rig: Starmap to Murder

The Rig: A Starmap to Murder is our first game and we are excited to push the excitement of exploration and storytelling to the forefront of a tight VR experience,” explains the team. “Our aim is for anyone putting on a headset, even for the first time, to be able to pick up and play The Rig.”

Sunset Division will be releasing The Rig: A Starmap to Murder for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index and Windows Mixed Reality headsets in just over a week on 26th June 2020 via Steam.

Take a look at the new official release trailer below. For further updates on The Rig: A Starmap to Murder, keep reading VRFocus.

Space-Noir Adventure ‘The Rig: A Starmap to Murder’ Coming to PC VR Next Week

Indie studio Sunset Division announced it’s bringing its space-noir adventure game The Rig: A Starmap to Murder to PC VR headsets next week.

It’s been a long time coming for the self-professed “small and scrappy” San Francisco-based VR studio, which was founded in 2016 to create its first VR passion project, The Rig.

Although we’ve never heard of the game before, the trailer for the story-driven adventure certainly looks intriguing.

Anyway, here’s the game’s setup:

You’re Willard Pike, failing Mars-based travel agent, now sent to the far reaches of edge-space by your desperate sister-in-law. She’s charged you with tracking down Dixon, your estranged, deadbeat brother. Dixon’s last known whereabouts are the AMR Alexey Stakhanov — a remote, ominous mining rig hitched to the side of a massive asteroid. But if you do find Dixon, if you stop him from running… what then? Do you bring back the man who ruined your life?

The studio is slated to release The Rig on Steam on Friday, June 26th. It supports your standard swath of SteamVR headsets, including HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Windows VR, and Valve Index.

New Trailer For VR Noir The Rig Ahead Of Launch This Month

As part of our UploadVR Showcase: Summer Edition, we’ve just premiered a brand new trailer for sci-fi noir adventure game The Rig: A Starmap To Murder. It’s set to launch for PC VR before the end of this month.

The Rig: A Starmap To Murder, developed by Sunset Division, first came onto our radar earlier this month. It’s a point-and-click style adventure game for VR, in a sci-fi setting with a story inspired by classic detective tales like The Maltese Falcon and Touch of Evil. We also got a first look at the game with a trailer that laid out some of the game’s basic plot points — you’re boarding a remote mining rig and will be looking for clues that point to the whereabouts of your missing brother.

As you can see in that first trailer, you’ll complete a mix of different puzzles, built from the ground up for VR, as you run an original story that is fully voice-acted. In our Summer Showcase, we just debuted a brand new trailer, embedded above. It’s short but sweet, and gives us a peek at more of those fantastic voice overs and a better look at the awesome noir and sci-fi visual style.

The Rig: A Starmap To Murder is set to launch this month on SteamVR with support for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Valve Index. We haven’t got an exact date just yet, but until then the game is available to wishlist on Steam .
