Here Are The Most Popular PSVR Games According To PSN

Sony revealed the most popular PSVR games according to PlayStation Network users.

According to posts on the US and EU PlayStation Blogs, The Playroom VR is the most-played PSVR game. This is based on the number of PSN accounts that have played these games. In other words, the data is taken from everyone with a PS4 connected online and signed up to PSN. So this can include disc-based titles, unlike the usual PlayStation Store chart results.

The Most Popular PSVR Games Revealed

The Playroom VR is a free download developed by Sony Japan. It features a bunch of minigames, some of which are designed for solo play and some of which support local multiplayer. Interestingly, one minigame spawned one of the platform’s best titles, Astro Bot: Rescue Mission. That title also features in the EU list, but not in the US.

The second most played title is PlayStation VR Worlds. Again, this is hardly surprising; it was a launch title compiling yet more minigames, one of which spawned Blood & Truth. It’s also featured in plenty of PSVR bundles since launch. Other launch titles listed in both territories include Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, Beat Saber and Batman: Arkham VR.

It probably won’t surprise you to see Beat Saber on both lists; it’s routinely held the best-selling position on the PS Store since launch in November last year. Other usual suspects include Skyrim VR, Resident Evil 7 and Superhot VR. Interestingly, the long-forgotten Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare VR experience makes the grade in both regions.

Perhaps the most surprising inclusion is Driveclub VR in the EU. It just makes it in at the tenth spot, but Sony actually took the game offline earlier this year. The standard version of Driveclub also went offline. It’s very peculiar to take one of your most popular VR games offline, is it not?

We have our list of the best 25 PSVR games, which you can check out to see how they measure up with the most popular PSVR games.

Last week Sony confirmed that the PS5 will launch in late 2020. That makes the future interesting for PSVR. We wrote an editorial earlier this week about how fans may need patience on the path to PSVR 2.

New Screenshots for PlayStation VR Exclusive Astro Bot Rescue Misson

As the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2018 conference continues, Sony have now released a number of new screenshots for their upcoming virtual reality (VR) title, Astro Bot Rescue Mission. The title was revealed late last month and features the fan favorite character from The Playroom and The Playroom VR, all of which are from developer Sony Japan Studio.

Astro Bot Rescue Mission - LogoAstro Bot Rescue Mission is a platform action title which will see the return of the cute robots as players lead the Bot captain through 26 different stages, over five different worlds, to rescue their lost crew. This will require a lot of running, jumping and punching as each stage presents its own challenges and puzzles that will need to be overcome, before facing off against a huge boss. Players role in this title is that of a big robot that is following the Bot captain around, offering a large scale of freedom on how players want to position themselves as they adventure through the title.

Writing on the PlayStation blog back at the time of the reveal, Nicolas Doucet, creative director and producer on the prokect wrote: “this time we took a new direction to challenge a genre that is close to the heart of many gamers out there (including us!): platform action games!”

“Every world you traverse ends with a huge boss battle which creates some really memorable moments.Imagine turning to find a 30 meter tall Gorilla towering above you, biting the building you are standing on!” Doucet continues. “The sense of the scale in VR really is amazing and is a great match for the gameplay offered by a platform game..It definitely needs to be seen to be believed!”

These new screenshot showcase some more of the colour title featuring a range of locations, characters and gameplay systems. From deep below the ocean waves to up above the clouds, Astro Bot Rescue Mission looks to take players on a grand adventure. Some of the bosses are also revealed in the new screenshots including a look at what can only be described as a giant, lava octopus.

Astro Bot Rescue Mission is currently in development from Sony Japan Studio for PlayStation VR. For all the latest on the title moving forward, keep reading VRFocus.

Nicolas Doucet of Japan Studio Reveals More On Astro Bot Rescue Mission

Astro Bot Rescue Mission, the newest virtual reality (VR) title from Sony’s Japan Studio, was revealed recently and features the cute robots from The Playroom and The Playroom VR titles. Following the announcement, more details on the title have now been revealed during the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2018 show via an interview on the PlayStation stage with creative director and producer Nicolas Doucet, Japan Studio.

Astro Bot Rescue Mission - Logo

“So with Astro Bot Rescue Mission we are making a VR platform game,” Doucet explains: “So we are taking our robots into a classic genre, reinvented for VR so its a very big adventure with those guys. You know they come from originally inside the controller, that’s where they live, but we take them out into this super magical world in VR. And so you go on a rescue mission looking for your lost crew. You control this little guy called Astro in this kind of VR environment and the big thing about VR gameplay is you can look all around you. So you get all this jumping action but you can use your body to look around and have 360 gameplay.

Doucet revealed that the idea for Astro Bot Rescue Mission had been around since the time the team was working on The Playroom and The Playroom VR. “So we had a little game inside The Playroom VR called Robot Rescue and that was a sample for us. We wanted to try what it was like to have a platform game within VR and it turned out to be really, really popular with gamers when the PlayStation VR came out.” Doucet explains.

“So with Astro Bot Rescue Mission we are taking this to a really big game and one of the things we are adding are big VR moments like this one (gestures to onscreen footage) where we are running up a giant arm. And the bosses are one of the big things, you know in VR everything feels huge and so bosses in VR is something we wanted to do and we have been able to do that.”

Astro Bot Rescue MissionWithin the title the players will be controlling the a character and leading them through the world but they are present within the VR world as well, allowing for some interesting and creative gameplay moments. “So another thing we have is the Dualshock 4 controller which becomes viable in your hands within VR. It can become a shrunken and by flicking on the touch pad you can destroy the environment to make a path for your character.

“Every now and again you have a job as a character – you exist in that world to and its very much teamwork in fact.” Doucet continoues: “At key moments we punctuate the game with moments of interaction by using the controller such as using your shrunken to make platforms or the hock shot to make rope for that character to climb.”

Players who might be wondering how big the experience will be, and how long it will last, will be pleasured to know that there is a lot. In fact, Doucet explained that there are around 26 levels across 5 worlds, with another 26 or so stages able to be unlocked, offering more complex challenges for players to try and overcome. There are also around 30 different enemies players will need to deal with and of course the huge bosses, which there are around six in the title. Doucet mentions that the complete experience should last around 8 to 10 hours.

Astro Bot Rescue MissionThough Astro Bot Rescue Mission features a main path to offer and a mission to complete, Doucet explained there is actally a few other things you can do within the title off the beaten path. “So you don’t have to rescue all the little guys but you know in VR you have this 3D audio, so you can hear where sound is coming from and you can actually hear if a character calling for help is down below or far away from you and that’s one of the really cool things about VR. So as you play through the levels to rescue them all – because getting your whole crew is the ultimate goal of the game – there is a main path but you can replay over and over again to find all the little guys.”

Finally, Doucet revealed that the coins players are picking up can be spent to unlock a number of extra items within the game: “All the coins you pick up in the game can be redeemed inside a collection room where you can play with your collection inside the room, so there is always something else to do on the side if you want a break from the adventure.”

Astro Bot Rescue Mission is due out later this year for PlayStation VR and VRFocus will be sure to bring you all the latest on the title in the future. For more on Japan Studio, Astro Bot Rescue Mission, and E3 2018, keep reading VRFocus.

Astro Bot Rescue Mission Announced For PlayStation VR

PlayStation have revealed a new virtual reality (VR) title from their Japan Studio and the team that brought players The Playroom and The Playroom VR titles. Titled Astro Bot Rescue Mission, players will be taking control of Astro, the Bot captain of a ship on a mission to rescue their lost crew who have become scattered across give different planets, all within PlayStation VR.

Astro Bot Rescue Mission

Astro Bot Rescue Mission is a platform action title where players will have to run, jump and punch their way through 26 different stages, over five different worlds, with each ending in an epic boss fight. The team are taking the genre to new heights though thanks to the power of PlayStation VR as they aim to include rich gameplay that takes advantage of the increased perspective, proximity and the added depth of the PlayStation VR. Players will find they have the freedom to view entire sequences from below, from above, across 180 degrees of view or by leaning round corners to discover hidden pathways and secrets.

Writing on the PlayStation blog Nicolas Doucet, creative director and producer said: “this time we took a new direction to challenge a genre that is close to the heart of many gamers out there (including us!): platform action games!”

Clearly a labor of love from the team, players will exist in the world as a big robot that follows Astro and occasionally will have the option to smash parts of the environment and dodge enemy attacks. Doucet mentions that both you and Astro need to survive in order to complete this mission so it will be key to make sure that not one of your perish on this epic journey. The team are also making use of the Dualshock 4 controller in creative ways, by allowing it to become host to a range of cool weapons depending on the situation. As the controller will be visible within the virtual world, players can make use of a hook shot, a water gun, or even deadly ninja stars.

Astro Bot Rescue Mission

As mentioned, players will be looking for their lost crew and there are eight to find in every stage. Clues as to where they may be hiding will be heard thanks to the 3D audio within the PlayStation VR unit that will add a another layer of depth to the title. With rich and unique locations to explore including city rooftops, sandy beaches, volcanoes and even inside the belly of a gigantic whale, there is plenty of variety to be found within Astro Bot Rescue Mission.

“Every world you traverse ends with a huge boss battle which creates some really memorable moments.Imagine turning to find a 30 meter tall Gorilla towering above you, biting the building you are standing on!” Says Doucet. “The sense of the scale in VR really is amazing and is a great match for the gameplay offered by a platform game..It definitely needs to be seen to be believed!”

Though there is no release date information at this time a short trailer as been release which you can find below. VRFocus will be sure to bring you all the latest on Astro Bot Rescue Mission in the future, so stay tuned for more.

Big Guns & Bigger Robots: The Playroom VR Welcomes You To Toy Wars

There’s always been a question regarding updates to virtual reality (VR) titles, particularly those that came out during the retail launch period. In spite of that a number of titles have had updates or staggered unlocks of content. A good example of this would be PlayStation VR’s Hatsune Miku: VR Future Live whose “3rd Stage” was released back in December following the intial launch of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE’s) head-mounted display (HMD).

The Playroom VR

Today two VR video games have revealed planned content updates, the first being HTC Vive title Omni Arena which has an April update planned for a new game mode. The second in another PlayStation VR title, The Playroom VR whose update was revealed by Nicolas Doucet of Sony Computer Entertaiment Japan on the PlayStation Blog.

The update, live today and free to all PlayStation VR users, sees The Playroom VR be furnished with a new game for its lineup. Called Toy Wars it sees the headset wearer become a gattling gun wielding action hero – albeit one securely ensconced in a swivel chair according to Doucet. The player must then fight off waves of blocky enemeies, assisted – if the chance is available to you – by up to three non-VR playing friends who will be controlling large robots. All three brought into the action by Evangelion-style lifts from a hidden underground base.

Toy Wars joins other The Playroom VR games including Cat and Mouse, Wanted! and Monster Escape. Screenshots for the new addition can be found below. VRFocus will bring you more on the latest additions to PlayStation VR and all the other VR headsets available as the news becomes available.

4 Great VR Party Games to Play With Friends and Family This Holiday

VR is so new that one of the regular activities of VR headset owners is introducing other people to the technology. Usually that means putting one person in a headset and standing around while they take their turn. But a few great VR party games let people both inside and outside of VR participate in the fun, and you only need one headset!

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes

Available on: SteamVR (HTC Vive & Rift), Oculus Home (Rift), PlayStation VR, Gear VR, Google Daydream, and PC

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes is easily one of the best VR party games out there, and, now available on Daydream, it’s also the most widely available. You can also find the game on SteamVR, Oculus Home, PlayStation VRGear VR, and PC (also Steam).

keep talking and nobody explodesIn Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, the player wearing the VR headset will find themselves sitting alone in a room with ticking time bomb in front of them. The bomb has a series of ‘modules’ which are miniature puzzles that must be solved in order to disarm it. The only problem is that the headset player doesn’t have the bomb defusal manual…. That’s where the other players come in: using a smartphone, computer, or even a printed copy, anyone not in the headset can access the 23 page bomb defusal document in order to aid in disarming the bomb.

The player in the VR headset has to relay information to those outside of the headset, and vice versa. The non-headset players will us the given information along with a series of increasingly complex instructions in the manual in an effort to guide the headset-wearer through the correct defusal procedure. Any incorrect moves mean a strike, and three strikes means you’re out (and by “out” I mean dead). There’s also that darn timer which doesn’t care how many strikes you have, it’ll blow the bomb once it hits 0:00.

The game is a blast (pun potentially intended, depending upon how good you are), and offers fun for a wide range of people, even those who are not experienced gamers or may not have any interest in putting on a VR headset. Because it has discrete levels (and failures), it creates a natural flow of passing the VR headset around; once a bomb is disarmed or blows up in someone’s face, that’s a good time to give the next person a turn with the headset. For adult gatherings, there’s also clear potential for a fun drinking game involving exploding bombs and shots.

Mass Exodus

Available on: SteamVR (HTC Vive & Oculus Rift)

Get a few friends with Xbox One gamepads, because this asymmetrical game lets a single VR player take on the role of the a giant-sized ‘seeker’ who must identify and hunt down up to four rogue androids – played by your friends of course.

While the seeker is sifting through the untold number of androids milling about the factory floor, rogue bots must try to blend in and scramble to switch off the control panels located around the factory and shut the facility down and win the match. Plenty of creative buffs help keep things interesting, so get ready for plenty of screaming.

Initially released back in May 2017, the developer Polymerse just completed an extensive overhaul of the game that’s improved match customizations, visuals and some of the sore spots related to the game’s AI and radar detection.

VR Pictionary with Tilt Brush or Quill

Available on: SteamVR (HTC Vive) or Oculus Home (Rift + Touch)

Pictionary is a classic board game where players receive a word and must draw a picture in order to get another player to correctly guess the word from the picture alone. Taking this concept and applying it to VR opens up a new realm of possibilities thanks to VR paint apps which let you draw in 3D with different colors, brushes, and effects. No matter which of the below platforms you’re playing on, you can play in teams (usually pairs) who compete for the high score, or a free-for-all, where everyone tries to guess at once and the correct guesser gets a point.

Tilt Brush (HTC Vive)

tilt brushTilt Brush, available for on SteamVR for the HTC Vive, has its own Pictionary functionality built-in (called Tiltasarus). Launch the game and rotate the Tools panel until you find the ‘experimental’ menu, then find the icon for Tiltasarus. Inside the headset you’ll be presented with a category and a word, but players outside the headset won’t be able to see it (even on the external screen). The player can then use Tilt Brush to draw the word and have everyone else look at the screen to guess what it is. You’ll want to set up your external screen (or maybe even connect to a big TV) in a central location to make it easy for non-VR players to gather around.

Quill (Oculus Rift & Touch)

quillIf you’ve got Oculus Touch you’ll also have free access to Quill on Oculus Home. Unlike Tilt Brush, Quill doesn’t have its own built-in word generator, so you’ll need to give the drawer a word before they put on the headset. The Game Gal has a handy free Pictionary word generator that also lets you configure difficulty or category.

Just like with Tilt Brush, you’ll want to make sure your external screen is set up somewhere that makes it easy for the guessers to gather around and see the drawing.

The Playroom VR

Available on: PlayStation VR

PlayStation VR comes free with the excellent Playroom VR, which includes a series of mini VR party games. For the most part you’ll need a few extra PS4 controllers on hand, but at least one of the games only requires one controller.

playroom vr sony morpheus virtual reality ps4 playstation (1)You’ll get to chase your friends as a giant monster, hide as mice from a vicious cat, go ghost busting, and more. Some of the games are cooperative and others are competitive, offering a great mix of teamwork and versus play. The Playroom VR is a no-brainer for VR party gaming on PSVR and as an introduction for new VR players.

The Best of PlayStation VR Launch: Party Games

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has gone to great lengths to ensure that the launch of PlayStation VR defeats many of the naysayers, no less than in the realms of social experiences. Keen to ensure that virtual reality (VR) can be enjoyed by families and friends as well as the core videogame demographic, every early adopter of the head-mounted display (HMD) will receive multiplayer-centric Playroom VR for free. Bargain, right?

There’s also PlayStation VR Worlds to consider. While it may not be a ‘party game’ per se, the implementation of SIE’s social screen initiative – wherein one player uses the HMD while another assists through a separate view on the television or mobile device – proposes some very interesting potential gameplay mechanics. It’s inherently limited by design at present, though much like VR as a medium is destined to evolve in years to come.

In the meantime, having friends and family round for a spate of couch multiplayer is important for expanding the potential audience of not just PlayStation VR, but the medium as a whole, and the below titles are your best bet for doing just that on day one.

Playroom VR – Sony Interactive Entertainment

As stated above, Playroom VR will be a free download for all PlayStation VR early adopters. So that’s an easy decision. But what exactly will you be doing with this software? Well, in true couch multiplayer style, there’s a selection of mini-games included that have players working both with and against the player wearing the PlayStation VR HMD. Monster Escape places the solo HMD wearing in the position of chasing down one-to-four players sharing the television screen and using DualShock 4 controllers to evade the large green beast towering down upon them, whereas Ghost House has the players working co-operatively to hunt supernatural beings in a cartoon haunted house. Playroom VR is a fantastic way of demonstrating this new technology without the fear of the many complicated implications of VR.

Carnival Games VR – 2K Games

One of the biggest selling franchises on the hugely successful Nintendo Wii console is coming to PlayStation VR. This should divide audiences into two camps immediately: those open to casual videogames and those who refuse to accept them. Those in the latter camp are best just ignoring its existence, but those looking for a videogame to play with their mother or father, son or daughter, or partner or friend unacquainted with videogames could do far worse. Carnival Games VR promises a palatable experience with extremely low barriers for entry.

Carnival Games key art

Ace Banana – Oasis Games

Not exactly the most high profile launch title for the PlayStation VR, Ace Banana tasks the players with defending a pile of bananas from evil invader monkeys. To do this, you’ll have to put your archery skills to the test using PlayStation Move controllers. What makes Ace Banana stand out as a party videogame is that the levels are keenly designed to increase in difficulty from short bursts to longer endurance tests, and that the entire videogame can be played co-operatively.
