PlayStation VR and SteamVR Support Arrives for The Midnight Sanctuary

3D horror novel The Midnight Sanctuary arrived on standard gaming platforms a couple of months ago, with Sony publishing label UNTIES and developer CAVYHOUSE stating that virtual reality (VR) would be implemented, without giving a timeline. Out of the blue, that support has arrived as a free update, enabling compatibility with PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

The Midnight Sanctuary

Blending both fixed 2D textures and fluid 3D models, The Midnight Sanctuary aims to provide a suspenseful audiovisual experience for VR players.

To give you an idea of what to expect, CAVYHOUSE explains: “Quirky historian Hamomuro Tachibana visits Daiusu, a long-isolated Japanese village, to help catalogue its sordid past and introduce inhabitants to modern customs. Formerly persecuted for their religious beliefs, the villagers have built a majestic cathedral in honor of its most revered deity, “The Saint.” They hope to make Daiusu a tourist destination where others can experience their long-upheld traditions.

“However, Tachibana soon realizes the charming village may not be so lovely after all. After witnessing a handful of disturbing and inexplicable events, she starts to question if their beloved saint represents good or if it’s back to bring about destruction.”

Currently available via PlayStation Store and Steam for $9.99 USD / £7.99 GBP, The Midnight Sanctuary supports English text localization with full audio and text in Japanese. UNTIES has informed VRFocus that the title will be discounted later this month on both stores, offering a 30 percent discount. Today, Sony publishing label UNTIES and developer CAVYHOUSE have launched their occult suspense 3D novel The Midnight Sanctuary for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Steam. The title will also get virtual reality (VR) support for PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive in the near future.

The Midnight Sanctuary

A Japanese supernatural horror tale set in a village long-segregated for its religious beliefs, The Midnight Sanctuary features a blend of 2D and 3D graphics with immersive audio elements to elevate the ghostly mystery to another level of eeriness.

The story synopsis explains: “In hopes of becoming a modern tourist destination, the people from long-isolated village of Daiusu have built a majestic cathedral to attract visitors with its religious history. Enter quirky historian Hamomuro Tachibana, come to chronicle the many legends kept in the local archive and teach villagers about modern customs.
“Tachibana’s stay quickly takes a heinous turn when residents begin phasing in and out of existence, hurling themselves from the cliffs overlooking the rural town, and contorting in spine-shattering positions. As she learns of the locals’ cult-like adoration for a mysterious deity known as “The Saint”, Tachibana begins to question what is real. Are these villagers specters in the night? Is The Saint real and returning, and if so, what horrors come with her?”
The Midnight Sanctuary

“It’s a very Japanese tale of supernatural horror told with the exceptional aesthetic distinction CAVYHOUSE brings to all their games,” said John Davis, G&R Representative, UNTIES in a statement. “The studio’s distinct brand of storytelling adds another layer of eeriness to The Midnight Sanctuary’s unsettling mystery.”

The Midnight Sanctuary is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Steam for $9.99 USD and supports English text localization, with full audio and text available in Japanese. While a VR version is in the works, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive users can download a demo version from Steam for a brief taster. When details do surface on the VR release VRFocus will let you know.

An occult suspense 3D novel developed by Japanese indie developer of story-heavy videogames CAVYHOUSE and published by Sony’s own UNTIES label, The Midnight Sanctuary takes players on a trip into a long-ago isolated Japanese village where residents appear and disappear as if by magic, and who also have a tendency to do perfectly normal things like leap off of cliffs and twist themselves in half.

The tale follows Hamomuro Tachibana, a historian who is invited to the village of Daiusu to act as a bridge for the residents, cataloguing the artefacts of the past and introducing them to the values and customs of the present.  Tachibana quickly finds out that seemingly nothing is as it should be, could the mysterious mystic known as “The Saint”, to whom the village dedicated itself, be behind the strange goings on? Is the cathedral built in her honour more than just a building? Tachibana quickly finds she’s not just hearing about ghost stories, she’s possibly a part of one.

“The mysteries of The Midnight Sanctuary carry many unexpected twists and turns,” said John Davis, G&R Representative, UNTIES. “CAVYHOUSE has really outdone themselves with the graphics, creating stunning visuals to underline the strange story of Daiusu village. The Midnight Sanctuary will be available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PSVR, and Steam for $9.99 (USD) and will support English text localization and full audio and text in Japanese.”
