8 Cool AR Apps to Try Now That Apple iOS 11 is Here

Apple’s newest iteration of the iOS mobile operating system is here, and with it comes the ability to turn your iOS 11 compatible device into an honest-to-goodness augmented reality viewer. Thanks to a few months of lead time with Apple’s developer tool ARKit, the App Store already has plenty of useful apps and interesting games boasting AR capabilities.

IKEA Place

One of the most talked-about ARKit apps is here, IKEA Place. Letting you virtually ‘place’ IKEA products in your home to figure out if they actually fit, the app features everything from the company’s unpronounceable sofas to it’s equally unpronounceable coffee tables. If only it included a flatpack model that showed how big the damn box was before trying to fit it in your car.

Zombie Gunship Revenant AR

Zombie Gunship Revenant is a unique zombie shooter where you take control of a heavily-armed helicopter gunship and obliterate zombies from the sky as they run around a military complex. Complete with fake heatmap and plenty of radio chatter, it’s amazing how realistic it all looks.

Follow Me Dragon

Ok, so there’s also some pretty silly AR apps too. Exhibit A: Follow Me Dragon. Although we can’t say how long something like this will actually be fun (especially for $2), there is an undeniable novelty in owning your own dragon that’s too hard to turn down. You can poke him, make him do tricks, take selfies with him, change his skin color and a bunch more basically useless things that will make your kids giggle.

World Brush

Art is everywhere with World Brush. You can create and post your 3D paintings anonymously at the approximate GPS location you created it. To combat the inevitable onslaught of phallic artistry, users have the ability to like, dislike and report paintings The app also uses a scoring algorithm that combines popularity and time of creation so you can always view the best stuff at your location.

Housecraft

IKEA Place is great, but if you’re looking for something a little more generic, Housecraft has a wider selection of 3D models to choose from if you’re planning out a new space including the ability to save the whole room configuration for later viewing.

Measure Kit

MeasureKit contains 7 AR measuring tools for those impromptu moments when you need to measure anything and everything including:

  • Ruler — measure straight lines on any surface, such as a desk or wall.
  • Trajectory — measure by “drawing” (moving your device) in the real world.
  • Marker Pin — measure distance from device camera to fixed points in space.
  • Angles — measure corners.
  • Person Height — measure how tall someone is.
  • Cube — visualize how big something is.

The Machines

Featured onstage at the iPhone X unveiling was Directive Games’ AR real-time strategy game, The Machines, featuring a PvP arena and a selection of robot warriors. Playable online or in the same room as your friends, The Machines is basically the game we all wanted when we were six.

Improved iPhone AR Capabilities Produces The Machines

The Apple event at the brand new Steve Jobs theatre revealed details of iPhone 8, the next version of Apple’s signature device. Since the launch of ARKit, there has been much excitement over the possibilities offered, which saw fruition with a presentation at the event.

Atli Mar from Directive Games presented a demonstration of The Machines, a title which allows for competitive multiplayer in augmented reality (AR), one of the first titles to implement this. AR allows users to use their position in the real world to gain an advantage, by moving to a tactically superior position.

Using Unreal Engine to create high-quality graphics, and the ARKit surface detection to project a complete 3D rendered battlefield on to a table top, floor or other surface, users will be able to move around the battlefield and see their forces move in real time, supported by the power of the new iPhone8.

Players can control either the rebellious human faction, or the powerful robot hive-mind, creating and deploying different kinds of robots and putting up defences to protect their home base from attack.

Further information can be found at the official The Machines website.

The developers of The Machines expect the title to be available on the Apple App Store later this month when the iOS 11 update rolls out.

VRFocus will bring you further information on The Machines as it becomes available.

The Machines Is A Tabletop War Game Powered By Apple’s ARKit

The Machines Is A Tabletop War Game Powered By Apple’s ARKit

I know I can’t be the only person that loves playing tabletop games but hates the setup, cleanup, and organizational headache they often cause. I’ve loved playing Dungeons & Dragons for years, but it’s a hassle lugging my literal treasure chest full of gear and supplies around. Playing online is great, but it lacks the physicality of playing in person. With the power of AR, a lot of that could start to change soon.

The Machines is an upcoming concept from Directive Games that was made using Apple’s ARKit and Unreal Engine 4. In the video below you can see a table transform into a war-torn battlefield with units spawning at opposite ends of the map. It’s nowhere near as complex of a game as something like D&D or Warhammer 40K, but it represents a big step forward for tabletop gaming all the same.

It reminds us of HoloGrid: Monster Battle, a decent tactics game that uses rudimentary AR mechanics from existing smartphones and tablet devices. We even saw a prototype of HoloGrid running on a Microsoft HoloLens that works similarly to what we’re seeing with The Machines here — in fact, they just recently launched it on HoloLens as well.

Mechanically The Machine appears to be a relatively simple game. You spawn units, they run forward and attack enemy units, until one side destroys the other’s base. Each unit also appears to have a special ability that can be activated when it’s not cooling down. We don’t know if there are other game modes or not, but Directive Games did tell us that player-vs-player combat (PvP) will be supported.

What do you think of The Machines? You can find out more on the official website here. Let us know your thoughts down in the comments below!

Directive Games Teases AR Title Built With ARKit and Unreal Engine

Since Apple launched itself into the augmented reality (AR) sphere and demonstrated its new Arkit SDK, several companies have been experimenting with what Apple’s AR capabilities are. One company, Directive Games, have produced a video teasing an AR rebuild of its existing title The Machines.

The Machines was originally released in 2016 as a PvP battle arena combined with elements of real-time strategy. Players take control of a team of specialised robots to take on an evil hive-mind that has enslaved the human race. Players can unlock different kinds of robots as they progress, build up defences for their home base, or charge forward to attack the enemy across the 3D battle field.

According to the developers, the AR rebuild displayed in the short video was built using ARKit and Unreal Engine 4 and uses ARKit’s surface detection to project the 3D rendered battlefield on to a tabletop so robot forces can march forward to attack an enemy base.

There is no word yet on if this is just a proof of concept demo or if Directive Games are indeed planning on releasing a new AR rebuild of The Machines for release on Apple’s new AR-enabled devices. As such, there is no word on a release date or price point, though if the developers are planning a release, it is not likely to appear until iOS 11 is commercially available.

Updates and further information on Directive Games and its ongoing projects can be found at the company’s website. There is an email list available for updates specifically regarding The Machines, which does seem to suggest the developers have further plans for it.

You can watch the demo video for The Machines AR below.
