Pars, Birdies and Eagles Await in The Golf Club VR for HTC Vive

A couple of weeks ago HB Studios announced it was developing a virtual reality (VR) version of its golfing title, The Golf Club for HTC Vive. Today the developer has released the videogame on Steam Early Access for those who love playing the sport.

The original title won Operation Sports Indie Game Of The Year, and the VR version is set to feature the same realistic setup. For the early access version of The Golf Club VR, the title will feature three 18-hole courses and a 9-hole mini putt course, all tailored and optimised specifically for the HTC Vive.

It’ll include an interactive tutorial, 1:1 motion controls for realism, club flexibility, left and right-handed play, three difficulty levels, interactive objects, all new 3D audio, a smart watch providing important shot information, a yardage booklet for a top down view of the courses, and for the first time players will be able to freely explore The Golf Club’s courses, with the ability to teleport anywhere around each course’s 2km-square environments.

“We’re excited to hear what our fans of TGC and newcomers alike think of The Golf Club VR,” said Shaun West, Producer of The Golf Club VR. “We’ll be listening to all feedback and making decisions over the coming weeks based on this. Community has always been an important part of the original TGC’s success and The Golf Club VR will be no different.”

As an introductory offer HB Studios is offering a limited time discount for Steam users. From now until 24th October gamers will be able to get a 15 percent discount off the regular price. Dropping the cost from £18.99 GBP to £16.14.

Early access should last around two months, after which the fully released version will include access to the full catalogue of the original The Golf Club courses, meaning over 130,000 courses and counting will be available to choose from.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of The Golf Club VR, reporting back with any further announcements.

HB Studios Announces The Golf Club VR for HTC Vive

Golf titles are ideally suited to the HTC Vive’s motion controllers, immersing players on the fairway as they look to beat par. Today HB Studios has announced it’ll be releasing its own take on the genre with The Golf Club VR.

The Golf Club VR is based on the original award-winning videogame, enabling HTC Vive owners to play all 130,000+ courses currently available to players of the console and PC versions.

“Playing The Golf Club on the HTC Vive takes the experience to a whole new level,” said Craig Chapman, Designer of The Golf Club VR. “Not only is it a much more tactile and immersive experience, now the player is also able to freely explore all the fantastic courses and environments which users have created since the original launch of the game.”

HB Studios has added a number of virtual reality (VR) specific features, including a smartwatch to analyse each shot, a single controller used for interacting with the environment and swinging clubs and customising options.

”This is another exciting addition to the franchise,” said Alan Bunker, CEO of HB Studios. “The Golf Club is a key title for us, and this is a natural direction for us to take. We’re committed to the franchise for the long term and embrace new technologies which further enhance the awesome experience of the game.”

The title will launch for the head-mounted display (HMD) later this year, currently no exact date or price has yet been announced. Originally The Golf Club launched on Sony PlayStation 4, Microsoft Xbox One and PC Windows on 2014. It featured a course designer which hasn’t been included in the VR version.
