12 New Quest 2 Games We Can’t Wait to Play

Thanks to the success of Oculus Quest 2, the amount of stuff you can play on the Oculus Quest Store is rapidly expanding. Here we take a look at some of the upcoming titles we can’t wait to play when they land in the next few months.

Note: These are just a few native Quest titles we’re looking forward to. There’s also a mind-boggling amount of VR games to play outside of the Oculus Quest Store too. You can play via SteamVR or Oculus PC provided you can setup Link or Air Link and have a VR-ready PC. Also, don’t forget App Lab and SideQuest for unmoderated Quest content.

Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge Part II

Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge first came to Quest back in November 2020, bringing with it a wholly new Star Wars experience. Creators ILMxLAB announced that the narrative-driven adventure is getting its first sequel here this year; the series will conclude in its fourth installment. That sounds like a lot of pirate blasting and droid saving.

Developer: ILMxLAB

Launch Date: 2021 “later this year”

Resident Evil 4 (Quest 2)

Ok, we get it. Resident Evil 4 (2005) isn’t new, but its Quest 2 port will be. Capcom’s beloved horror-shooter is getting a first-person overhaul, which is said to include higher resolution textures, a made-for-VR UI, and positional audio for greater immersion. The only catch: it’s coming exclusively to Quest 2 and not the original Quest.

Developer: Armature Studio, Capcom

Launch Date: TBD

Ilysia

Successful Kickstarter Ilysia is coming to all major VR headsets, including PC VR, Oculus Quest, and PlayStation VR. This cross-play MMORPG is expected to release to backers sometime before the end of 2021, bringing with it plenty of beasts, world bosses, and both megalithic ‘Guardians’ and ‘Titans’ to contend with.

Developer: Team 21 Studio

Launch Date: before end of 2021

Larcenauts

Larcenauts is set to bring the hero shooter genre to Quest in a big way. This six vs six shooter ostensibly takes its cues from games like Valorant, Overwatch and Apex Legends. It’s not only natively coming Quest, but also Rift and SteamVR-compatible headsets, including cross-play.

Developer: Impulse Gear

Launch Date: Summer 2021

After the Fall

After the Fall, the long-delayed co-op shooter, is finally coming to Quest, and its launching alongside Oculus PC and PSVR. Vertigo Games first announced the post-apocalyptic zombie shooter back in June 2019, although the studio recently gave us an eye-full of some updated gameplay, so it’s definitely still coming.

Developer: Vertigo Games

Launch Date: Summer 2021

Wanderer

Wanderer is a VR adventure game that takes inspiration from Quantum Leap (1989) and Dark (2017), letting you travel back through history to prevent the collapse of civilization. It’s coming to all major VR headsets sometime later this year, which includes Oculus Quest!

Developer: Oddboy, M Theory

Launch Date: Q3 2021

Ancient Dungeon

Ancient Dungeon is a rogue-lite dungeon crawler that found success on Kickstarter last year. It’s aiming for launch sometime “soon,” developer Eric Thullen says, with plans to arrive in early access on both SteamVR headsets and Oculus Quest. You can test it now in beta via App Lab for Quest.

Developer: Joy Way

Launch Date: sometime “soon”

Captain ToonHead

Captain ToonHead vs The Punks from Outer Space is a whacky first-person tower defense that puts your granny’s chancla (Spanish for ‘slipper’, often used as an impromptu bludgeon) in one hand and a gun in the other as you build towers and shoot down a mess of cybernetic baddies.

Developer: Teravision Games

Launch Date: Summer 2021

Project 4 (Boneworks)

Boneworks (2019) offers up some awesome physics-based shooting madness on PC VR headsets, and we were intrigued when the studio announced they’d be bringing the game’s mechanics and core systems to Quest and also put it “anywhere we can,” Stress Level Zero says. There’s still nothing out there on the so-called Project 4 game yet, but we’re hoping to learn more sometime soon.

Developer: Stress Level Zero

Launch Date: TBD

Assassin’s Creed & Splinter Cell

After a rash of first-gen VR games and a pre-COVID foray into VR arcade experiences, Ubisoft is again renewing its commitment to at-home VR gaming with bona fide Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell VR games. The studio announced both titles in September 2020, but there’s still distressingly little information out there outside of the fact that they will be built from the ground-up exclusively for the Oculus platform, and will “include elements of the franchises that players know and love.”

Developer: Ubisoft

Launch Date: TBD

Against

Against is rhythm game that is all about fighting and wall-running to the beat through stylish neo-noir levels. We had a chance to preview Against a little while ago; it has a lot in common with Beat SaberPistol Whip, and FitXR, but it’s much darker in tone as you slash, shoot, punch, dodge and more.

Developer: Joy Way

Launch Date: Q3 2021

Update (May 13th): We’ve completely overhauled this list, and took out games that have since launched. You can catch many of those over at our Review section to find out where to spend your hard-earned cash.

10 New Games We Can’t Wait to Play on Quest 2

Quest 2 is on the horizon, and with its October 13th release date inching ever closer, you might want to know what new games we’re looking forward to playing on the company’s next standalone headset.

Many of the games below were first announced at Facebook Connect last week, however there’s a few on the list that we’ve been waiting to hear about for a while now. We’ll be keeping an eye out for their respective launch dates, as well as more new games to tally up, so make sure to check back as our list evolves further.

Note: These are all considered ‘Quest platform’ titles, so all of them should come to the original Quest too. We’d be kidding if we said Quest 2’s higher resolution, increased horsepower, and optional ergonomic ‘Elite’ strap didn’t increase immersion across the board. It does. Check out our deep dive review of Quest 2 to find out more.

Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge

We already knew Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge was coming to Oculus headsets when it was announced back in May, but none of the specifics were clear at the time. From the creators of Vader Immortal, this narrative-driven adventure is set to take you to the edge of the galaxy where you’ll slip through some of the franchise’s larger than life tales. Expect blasters, light sabers and droids that go beep boop and “oh dear!”

Developer: ILMxLAB

Launch Date: Holiday 2020

Sniper Elite VR

Sniper Elite VR is set to bring a new twist to the sharp shooter franchise with this first-person VR entry, which is landing on all major VR headsets—Quest included. You’d probably do well to buy a VR gun stock, 3D print your own, or just duct tape your controllers to a sawed-off broomstick to steady that shaky aim.

Developer: Rebellion

Launch Date: “coming soon”

Project 4 (Boneworks)

Boneworks (2019) offers up some awesome physics-based shooting madness on PC VR headsets, and we were intrigued when the studio announced they’d be bringing the game’s mechanics and core systems to Quest. Developer: Stress Level Zero

Launch Date: TBD

Assassin’s Creed & Splinter Cell

After a rash of first-gen VR games and a (pre-pandemic) foray into VR arcade experiences, Ubisoft is again renewing its commitment to at-home VR gaming with bonafide Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell VR games. Although the studio didn’t say as much, Oculus’ retirement of the Rift platform strongly suggests we’re seeing two new Quest exclusives in the making. No specifics yet, but we’re waiting in kitchen cupboard, you know, for practice.

Developer: Ubisoft

Launch Date: TBD

Myst

Cyan cut its teeth in the early ’90s developing one of the most iconic puzzle adventure games, Myst (1993). We’ve been wondering when we’d finally get a freshly remastered version, and it seems the company decided to go full ham with a VR mode on Steam for PC, and a VR version for Quest too. Whether you played the original or not, there’s multiple hours of puzzles and narrative gubbins to experience here, and no better way to do it than in VR.

Developer: Cyan Worlds

Launch Date: 2020

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister is an upcoming narrative-driven shooter that’s promising to let you dive head-first into the Warhammer 40k universe, replete with oversized armor, magical acts of faith, and more guns than you can shake a gun at. Both single and multiplayer modes are coming.

Developer: Pixel Toys

Launch Date: 2020

The Climb 2

The Climb 2 is bringing us back to the rocky cliffs again, this time taking you to new heights in a city setting. Reach for the next handhold, but make sure to chalk up, rest when you need to (with both hands steady), and look around for alternate paths to the summit. The first was a smorgasbord of breathtaking visuals, and we’re probably in for a repeat with the sequel.

Developer: Crytek

Launch Date: Holiday 2020

Jurassic World Aftermath

In a very Alien Isolation turn of events, you find yourself creeping through corridors on your way to recover valuable research materials from an abandoned research facility. Instead of a ruthless Xenomorph, you’ll be pitted against pack of intelligent Velociraptors. If the developers are thinking what we’re thinking, Aftermath would make for a great Halloween release.

Developer: Coatsink Games, Universal Games, Digital Platforms Team

Launch Date: “coming soon”

Population: One

Ok. Battle Royale-style shooters are kind of old news, but we haven’t really gotten a highly polished one in VR yet, so there’s a reason to be excited about Population: One. It’s been in private beta testing for a pretty long time now, so we’re expecting big things from this 18-player shooter which lets you climb, shoot, glide, scrounge, duck and dodge. We went hands-on back at Gamescom 2018, and it was already pretty awesome.

Developer: BigBox VR

Launch Date: “coming soon”

The Climb 2 Confirmed, Coming ‘Only’ To Oculus Quest Platform

During the Facebook Connect digital conference today The Climb 2 was revealed, a direct follow-up to Crytek’s The Climb. The original game was first released as an Oculus Rift exclusive, but has since been ported to Oculus Quest.

Details are scarce on The Climb 2 at this time, but it’s definitely not a sequel we expected to see today. In the announcement trailer embedded above you’ll notice much more exotic locations than in the first game, such as a volcano in the background or a city full of skyscrapers similar to Dubai in the key art. They’ve certainly gone with a more striking, stylized visual identity this time.

According to the press release: “The thrill of rock climbing comes alive with The Climb 2–explore a new city setting and exhilarating new maps with breathtaking views. Ascend grand peaks, navigate vast caves, climb skyscrapers, and discover hidden shortcuts as you find your path to the top. Compete with friends and conquer leaderboards in asynchronous multiplayer modes. From exploring mountain environments to scaling urban settings, feel the rush of climbing without ropes, and experience breathtaking vistas as you scale new heights.”

The Climb 2 is exclusive to the Oculus Quest and Quest 2 with the trailer saying “only on the Oculus Quest platform” at the end in small print. You might think that because it says “Captured on PC” in the trailer for the Quest game it might come to PC at some point. We reached out to Facebook to clarify whether the game might ever come to PC VR or PSVR and a representative replied that The Climb 2 is a “Quest platform exclusive.”

After the Quest port of The Climb was originally announced all the way back at the Quest announcement during Oculus Connect in 2018, the game itself didn’t actually release until December 2019. Now, less than a year later, we’re already hearing news of a sequel. Although, it’s likely work began on this sequel prior to the first game’s port launching.

In The Climb you use your hands to ascend up perilous mountains across a variety of picturesque locales. In the PC VR version the breathtaking visuals are the highlight of the experience and despite the downgrade, it’s still quite captivating on the Quest version as well. Hopefully the XR2 chip inside the Quest 2 will help it deliver even more impressive visuals for the sequel.

What do you think about the surprise sequel announcement? It’s coming this holiday season exclusively to Oculus Quest. Let us know your thoughts down in the comments below!

Crytek’s Long-awaited ‘The Climb 2’ Coming to Oculus Quest on March 4th

Crytek announced last year that The Climb (2016) would be getting its long-awaited sequel sometime during the holiday season 2020. Although that launch window has come and gone, The Climb 2 is now finally set for a March 4th release date.

Update (February 23rd, 2021): After missing its holiday 2020 release window, The Climb 2 is now suddenly right around the corner. Crytek today announced a March 4th release date for the game which is expected to remain a Quest exclusive. A price has yet to be announced.

Oculus confirmed the sequel will include “15 new maps” [our emphasis], which suggests The Climb 2 may include some maps from the original title. We’ve reached out to Oculus for clarity.

The Climb 2 is also said to introduce “objects like ropes, containers, ladders, and climbing equipment that react to the player’s weight,” along with unlockables like gloves, watches, and wristbands. We’ve also spotted two screenshots of the game we hadn’t seen previously:

The original article, which covered the game’s announcement, follows below.

Original Article (September 16th, 2020): Dubbed The Climb 2, the first-person rock climbing game is said to let you explore “a new city setting and exhilarating new maps with breathtaking views.”

More from the game’s description:

Ascend grand peaks, navigate vast caves, climb skyscrapers, and discover hidden shortcuts as you find your path to the top. Compete with friends and conquer leaderboards in asynchronous multiplayer modes. From exploring mountain environments to scaling urban settings, feel the rush of climbing without ropes, and experience breathtaking vistas as you scale new heights.

Here’s all of the screenshots that were shared with Road to VR so far:

Originally launched as an Oculus Rift exclusive in 2016, The Climb dazzled with detailed visuals and kept us grasping for the next ledge thanks to interesting gameplay mechanics.

We gave it a [3/5] in our initial 2016 review, although that was admittedly before it had Touch controls and true 360 room-scale tracking.  The game has since made its way to Oculus Quest.

Neither Facebook nor Crytek have mentioned whether The Climb 2 is also headed to Rift, so for now it’s probably best to consider it a Quest platform exclusive.

Leaked Quest 2 Box Reveals ‘The Climb 2’ & ‘Jurassic World Aftermath’ Games

A purportedly leaked Quest 2 box reveals new games coming to Oculus Quest like The Climb 2 and Jurassic World: Aftermath.

It seems the floodgates have opened following the confirmed leak of Quest 2 earlier this week which gave away many of the headset’s core specifications including a Snapdragon XR2 chip and high resolution display.

Now two photos purportedly of the Quest 2 box have surfaced online, apparently originating on Craigslist. While we haven’t been able to independently verify that this is indeed the headset’s box, there’s plenty of correct minor details which give the appearance of authenticity.

The back of the box highlights six games coming to the headset, two of which were previously unknown: The Climb 2 and Jurassic World: Aftermath. The other games on the box are Star Wars: Tales From the Galaxy’s Edge, Horizon, Population: One, and Beat Saber.

Originally released on Oculus Rift in 2017, The Climb by Crytek remains one of the most rated games on Oculus Rift and was successful enough the get ported to Oculus Quest in late 2019.

Now it seems Crytek is creating a sequel which, given its depiction on the back of the box, could be a Quest 2 launch title. While the company declined to comment on its roadmap for VR content, we recently noticed Crytek was hiring a ‘VR Rendering Engineer’ which suggests ongoing VR development.

Jurassic World: Aftermath is a name we haven’t seen confirmed for VR previously, but Jurassic World itself is no stranger to VR. Two VR video experiences Jurassic World: Apatosaurus (2015) and Jurassic World: Blue (2018) were previously released on Oculus headsets like Go and Gear VR. Jurassic World: Aftermath could also be a video experience, but with Quest’s emphasis on gaming rather than video, we’d say there’s a good chance this is a an interactive experience if not a full blown game.

Facebook Connect (formerly Oculus Connect) is right around the corner! Stay tuned to Road to VR on Wednesday, September 16th for the most important VR news and announcements.

Oculus Quest 2 Box Leaks, Reveals Jurassic Park VR & The Climb 2

Another day, another Oculus Quest 2 leak. This time it’s what looks like the packaging the kit comes in, which seems to confirm some new games for the device.

A Reddit user posted images of the box, which they say they found on Craigslist (sorry, it’s already been sold). The images show the front of the packaging, which features the unannounced headset and its new controllers, and then the back with a range of content on display. The images feature apps we already know about, like Beat Saber, Facebook’s own Horizon service, and the upcoming Population: One.

Quest 2 Box Leaks

But seen for the first time on the back of the pack are The Climb 2 and Jurassic World: Aftermath. The former looks like the sequel to the popular VR rock climbing game from Crytek, while the latter is one we haven’t seen before. There’s also another shot of Star Wars: Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge which seems to confirm that everybody’s favorite green Jedi, Yoda, will make an appearance in the game.

Quest 2 Box Leaks games

The top of the box also notes you’ll get the headset, two controllers, two AA batteries, a power adapter, a glasses spacer and a charging cable in the box.  Bear in mind this could all just be an elaborate mock up, but it’s a pretty good one if that’s the case.

This is just the latest in a series of leaks for Quest 2. We saw product renders a few months back but, just yesterday, Facebook itself published a handful of videos displaying the new device earlier than intended. They state that the kit offers “an almost 4K” resolution, and houses Qualcomm’s XR2 chipset.

At this point it’s a certainty that Quest 2 will have its official unveiling at Facebook Connect tomorrow. The VR/AR digital event kicks off at 10am PT. We’ll be there to cover all the latest news from the show.
