Platform Puzzler ‘HUMANITY’ Launches Today on PSVR 2 & PC VR, Trailer Here

HUMANITY, the crowd simulation puzzler from Enhance and THA, is here, bringing all of its Lemmings-inspired glory to PSVR 2 and PC VR headsets today.

HUMANITY is available on PSVR, PSVR 2 and PC VR headsets starting today. As a PlayStation Plus title for May, it will also be free to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium members during the month of May. You can find it here on the PlayStation Store and on Steam, priced at $30.

At the time of this writing, HUMANITY is already available in Europe on the PS Store and is soon to unlock on the platform in North America in the coming hours. We’ve included the new launch trailer ahead of the original article below:

Japan-based studio Enhance and developers THA LTD announced HUMANITY is coming to PSVR, PSVR 2 and PC VR headsets on May 16th, which also includes flatscreen support.

The game is set to launch on PS5/PS4 as a PlayStation Plus title for May, which means it will be free to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium members throughout the month.

The studio also released a new trailer showing off some of the infectiously weird (and patently Japanese) marketing spliced in with gameplay which may pique your interest, embedded below the update.

Note: The previously mentioned demo is no longer available.

Original Article (February 28th, 2023): It was pretty vague what the hell HUMANITY was all about when it was first announced in 2019, however now the studio reveals its upcoming game is a “unique blend of puzzle-solving and action-platforming,” giving you control over an ethereal Shiba Inu dog who commands a massive crowd.

Like Lemmings, you control the crowd as they jump, turn, push, float, shoot, and climb their way to the end goal. Move past obstacles, enemies, puzzles, and gain unlockable skills in the main game, and upload and try out user-built levels with the in-game Stage Creator.

To create its stark and unique environments, developer Tha LTD is working with creative studio Enhance—founded by Tetsuya Mizuguchi, known as the mind behind Rez and Tetris Effect: Connected—and director and visual designer Yugo Nakamura.

Tha game is considered a VR-optional experience, offering up a fairly straightforward implementation that lets you turn the game’s puzzle-filled levels around and control your Shiba Inu buddy and direct the human horde. While nothing ground-breaking, it’s nice to see VR support from the get-go.

The game is slated to release on PSVR, PSVR 2, and SteamVR headsets sometime in May (see update). What’s more, you can now play a free demo on those platforms from now until March 6th. The demo contains 10 levels, while the full game has “90 plus”, the studio says.

‘HUMANITY’ Makes Gameplay from Massive Crowd Simulation, Coming to PS4 & PSVR in 2020

HUMANITY, a undeniably unique looking title from Tokyo-based design studio Tha LTD uses massive crowd simulation with an apparent focus on on puzzle and RTS-like gameplay. The game was revealed today and announced to be headed to PS4 in 2020 with optional PSVR support.

Though the studio is being intentionally vague about exactly what kind of gameplay players can expect from Humanity, the reveal trailer shown off today is enough to pique our interest. Road to VR editor Scott Hayden suitably described the snippets of gameplay in the trailer as “like Lemmings and a tower defense mixed with existential angst.”

With an original style and hordes of simulated crowds, the game looks like it’ll involve elements of physics-based puzzling and maybe even some RTS-like combat. Studio Tha LTD is being intentionally vague about how the game will actually play, though it promises to reveal more next year.

Developer Tha LTD is working with creative studio Enhance—founded by Tetsuya Mizuguchi, known as the mind behind Rez (2001)which is aiding in both publishing “as well as contribut[ing] to level design and general gameplay consulting.”

“From the first early demo I saw, I couldn’t get HUMANITY out of my head,” says Mizuguchi. “The whole look and feel of it—manipulating these teeming masses of people—was mesmerizing, especially in VR. I knew right away it could be something special, which is why I couldn’t be more excited to help a visionary like [Tha LTD founder] Yugo-san realize its full potential.”

It’s a seemingly natural fit thanks to Mizuguchi’s experience in realizing games with stark visual-audio styles, including VR-optional titles like Rez Infinite (2017) and Tetris Effect (2018).

Humanity is due out in 2020 on PSVR and will include optional PSVR support, though we’re expecting it will be a controller-only game.

Humanity is Enhance Games’ Next VR Supported Videogame

Kicking off today’s State of Play broadcast by Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) was Humanity, the next title to be published by Tetris Effect studio Enhance Games. Being developed by tha Ltd, Humanity’s short video showcased a rather stark looking visual style for an experience designed for both virtual reality (VR) and non-VR gameplay.

Humanity

A concept created by tha Ltd’s founder Yugo Nakamura just over three years ago, Humanity looks to have gameplay elements reminiscent of classic puzzler Lemmings. The time there are massive crowds of people all walking, climbing, jumping and falling as they wander around. These groups can even fight, shooting at one another as if protecting a location.

The video doesn’t detail any specific gameplay elements, only alluding to some, with further details to be released in the new year. Enhance Games joined the project in early 2018 to take on publishing duties, as well as contribute to level design and general gameplay consulting.

“From the first early demo I saw, I couldn’t get Humanity out of my head,” says Enhance Founder and CEO Tetsuya Mizuguchi in a statement. “The whole look and feel of it—manipulating these teeming masses of people—was mesmerizing, especially in VR. I knew right away it could be something special, which is why I couldn’t be more excited to help a visionary like Yugo-san realize its full potential.”

Humanity

“I’ve long admired the work of Mizuguchi-san and his team; it feels like the perfect fit to be working with the people who made games like Rez and Tetris Effect,” says tha Founder and Creative Director Yugo Nakamura. “Everyone at tha is working hard to make Humanity something that likewise engages all your senses—a fun, challenging game, but also something more meaningful than that. Rest assured we have lots more to show and talk about…”

Humanity is coming to PlayStation 4 with optional PlayStation VR support sometime in 2020. When Enhance Games release further details on this interesting looking experience, VRFocus will let you know. Also shown during the State of Play broadcast was Digital Lode’s stealth experience Espire 1: VR Operativegiven a September 2019 launch date.
