An Arcade Stalwart Evolved, Sony Square NYC Welcomes A(i)R Hockey

The arcade is ever evolving as it seeks to find a new audience and adjusts to the new status quo for on-location entertainment. Regular readers of VRFocus will be aware that news relating to virtual reality (VR) arcades and digital out-of-home entertainment (DOE) is pretty regular. Be it new locations, expansions, adaptions to existing venues, or new experiences from small to room-scale, location-based experiences.

WOW StudioAs we’ve seen through items like our ongoing semi-regular feature series The Virtual Arena*, there’s plenty of direct interest in immersive technology within the amusement and arcade sector. So, it shouldn’t be a surprise that some arcade staples have been brought up to date with new tricks and features offered by the advance in technology.

One such amusement stalwart getting a facelift is the humble air hockey table. For decades a traditional battlefield as parent takes on child in an effort to slam a hard plastic puck hard enough to get it into a hole without it flying up and hitting someone full in the face.

Sony Square NYC is welcoming a new version of air hockey to its line-up which uses a form of augmented reality (AR) to take the game into mixed reality (MR) territory. Dubbed, appropriately enough, A(i)R Hockey, it sees the traditional table replaced by a circular one and the number of players increased to three. The twist really comes when the game starts. Not only is there the physical puck, hit with the familiar mallet as usual but virtual pucks of different sizes start whizzing around the table as well which you will need to defend against with the mallet. The game tracking how each reacts to your strikes and players having to track both physical and virtual objects at the same time.  There’s even haptics imbedded in the mallet so you can feel the hit of the virtual pucks.

“Our goal at Sony Square NYC is to showcase the very best of what Sony has to offer and to help connect people with the brand in new ways,” said Steven Fuld, Senior Vice President of Corporate Marketing at Sony Corporation of America. “The A(i)R Hockey game is a great way to demonstrate some of Sony’s cutting-edge innovations and technologies, while at the same time providing fun for the whole family.”

A(i)R HockeyThe title, developed by WOW Studio, was first shown at SXSW 2018 and uses high-speed vision sensors capable of tracking objects at 1000 frames per second. It’ll be at Sony Square NYC for the next month until May 27th, 2018.  Sony themselves recorded some footage for their Sony – Stories channel on YouTube which also shows off some of the other tricks the table has. You can see that below. Sadly for air hockey aficionados, there is no information as to whether A(i)R Hockey will see a roll-out beyond appearing at events at this time.

Be sure to follow VRFocus for all the latest news relating to immersive technology’s use in DOE and the amusement sector.

*Incidentally, there is a two-part The Virtual Arena reporting on the 2018 Asia Amusement & Attractions Expo and discussing exactly this beginning this coming Friday.

Three VR for Good Creators Lab Projects Premiere at SXSW

Running over the course of this week has been the annual South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference and Festival in Austin, Texas, celebrating the convergence of the interactive, film, and music industries all in one place. The event has a special VR Cinema section which ran over two days, with plenty of virtual reality (VR) content on show. As part of the roster three VR for Good Creators Lab Projects premiered, each telling a different compelling story from a non-profit organisation.

The Evolution of Testicles

The first film shown was The Evolution of Testicles, created by Ryan Hartsell as part of a Male Cancer Awareness Campaign. Narrated by Chris O’Dowd (BridesmaidsMolly’s Game), the film takes viewers on a testicular romp through the evolution of man told via CGI, a giant testicle-shaped hot air balloon, all in the name of bringing awareness to male cancer prevention.

Then there was One Eighty by Eren Aksu for the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative. This film told the story of an Indian mother, Vijai Kumari, who spent 20 years behind bars, and her son, Kanhaiya Kumari, who was born in prison – and their quest to clear their names and live in freedom.

The final film from VR for Good was Authentically Us: We’re Still Here, by Jesse Ayala in conjunction with the Pride Foundation. Part of Authentically Us—a trilogy from FOVRTH Studios, this episode follows Aiden Crawford, a Two-Spirit  artist and historian in Boise, Idaho, struggles to preserve and revive his heritage in a race against time.

Authentically Us: We're Still Here

VR for Good was launched by Oculus in 2016 to provide support for social change, establishing the Creators Lab, which paired ten filmmakers with non-profit organisations to champion various causes and tell compelling stories using VR. Projects created in that time include Step to the Linea documentary taking viewers inside the US prison system, Out of the Blue which follows a family of fishermen in Mexico, and Use Your Imagination, a VR musical written and performed by young artists on the autism spectrum.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Oculus and VR for Good, reporting back with the latest project updates.

Stream Live Performances From FADER FORT in VR

The FADER have been running a special live music event at South by Southwest (SXSW) for over 15 years, dedicated to introducing the world to new and upcoming music acts. The small, intimate nature of the performance means that previously only a fortunate few could see these performances, that has changed with virtual reality (VR) video streaming.

In the past, the FADER FORT music event has allowed emerging artists to become known to a new audience, with performers such as Cardi B, Dua Lipa and Drake using it as a breakout gig. As a result, it become one of SXSW’s most in-demand shows.

The FADER have teamed up with Google VR in order to open up the show to a wider audience by livestreaming the event on YouTube in VR180 video. Users will e able to watch a 3D, 4K video of the show, where performances from special guests such as Saweetie, Bloc Boy, Valee and Speedy Ortiz will be featured.

The VR180 stream will be available to users via a 2D YouTube desktop or mobile app, or for a more immersive experience, viewers can don a Google Cardboard, Samsung Gear VR Google Daydream or even PlayStation VR to view the stream in VR.

The livestreams will be available from 14th-16th March, with the best acts being available to view live during the day in VR180, then an edited version of each set will be made available for viewing at any time, for those whose time-zones do not sync up so well or are otherwise occupied during the performance times.

The FADER said on its website: “Thanks to Google’s tech, the videos look great on a regular device, but seeing them in VR definitely makes for the best viewing experience. “

The full set list can be found at The FADER official website, though some of the special guest performances are intended to be surprises and have not yet been announced.

Bose Reveals AR Audio Platform

Audio equipment designer and developer Bose and introduced an augmented reality (AR) audio platform at South by Southwest (SXSW).

Bose AR Prototype Glasses 02

The platform will be the world’s first audio AR platform in which a user is able to use glasses to hear sound. Dubbed Bose AR, the platform does not change what a user is looking at, but thanks does know what a user is looking at. This allows Bose AR to add an audible layer of information and experiences, rather then superimposing visual objects onto the real world and completely changing the users view. This audible layer is said to make every day better, easier, more meaningful, and more productive, according to Bose.

John Gordon, vice president of the Consumer Electronics Division at Bose commented on the announcement by stating: “Bose AR represents a new kind of augmented reality— one that’s made for anyone and every day, it places audio in your surroundings, not digital images, so you can focus on the amazing world around you— rather than a tiny display. It knows which way you’re facing, and can instantly connect that place and time with endless possibilities for travel, learning, music and more. And it can be added to products and apps we already use and love, removing some of the big obstacles that have kept AR on the sidelines.”

Bose AR Prototype Glasses 03

Bose AR is debuting with a miniscule, wafer-thin acoustics package developed specifically for the platform, that is a testament to the future of mobile micro-sound with power and clarity that will impress anyone. This allows it to be built into headphones, eyewear, helmets and more, with no compromise to the existing functionality. Once more, Bose AR is able to function with the use of head gestures, voice commands or a tap on the wearable control content – replacing the need to swipe, type or tap a touchscreen.

Alongside the reveal of Bose AR the company have shown off their first wearable for the platform in the form of a prototype pair of glasses. The Bluetooth compatible glasses, complete with a microphone, have the Bose AR acoustic package embedded discreetly into each arm, meaning they are fit, function and look like standard eyewear but sound and function like Bose headphones. Other uses that the Bose AR platform could be put to work with includes learning by allowing a user to translate a sign just by looking at it or even prodive the history behind a painting a user might be viewing.

Bose hopes that the Bose AR platform will be used by many to further enhance a users day-to-day life, with approved developers and manufacturers welcome to collaborate on the project and develop it further. Currently Bose is working with ASICS Studio, Strava, TripAdvisor, TuneIn, and Yelp to develop more for Bose AR. The company is also collaborating with research institutions, including the MIT Media Lab to advance human interaction related to augmented audio reality, and the NYU Future Reality Lab.

Developers interested in the Bose AR platform can sign-up for more information and the Bose AR SDK over on Bose’s developer site.
