Swords of Gargantua Studio Working on a More Casual Sword Fighting Game

Swords of Gargantua

Thirdverse Inc’s virtual reality (VR) title Swords of Gargantua was built around the premise of recreating sword fighting with great accuracy, weapons that display weight and so on. Which makes for an engaging yet brutal gameplay experience. So next year the studio plans on releasing a new, more casual, sword fighting title a new interview reveals.

Swords of Gargantua

Speaking to Famitsuspotted by Siliconera – Thirdverse Inc. game producer Teryuki Toriyama confirmed that the team is working on a new VR action videogame with sword fighting as its central mechanic. “We plan to launch a new sword fighting VR action game in early 2022. Compared to Swords of Gargantua, it will be aimed more towards casual players,” he said.

It’s not clear whether this will be an entirely new IP or still be based within the Sword of Gargantua universe. One thing is clear, the studio wants the new title to be more accessible; allowing players to become that unstoppable hero without it feeling like a workout.

Whilst still early in development Thirdverse Inc. has mentioned another project, a multiplayer shooter. Revealing a single location image, showing what looks like a temple structure floating in the sky, the layout mixes both fantasy and sci-fi aesthetics for a visually dynamic environment. The Famitsu article also showcases a cybernetic character design that doesn’t quite fit with the location look but does suggest an overpowered, action element.

While no platforms have yet been confirmed, Toriyama gave an interesting quote when discussing VR hardware hurdles, saying: “The Oculus Quest 2, which solved many problems, left an impact on me.” So it’s a safe bet that the popular standalone headset will get a look in with at least one of these games.

The Japanese studio has been expanding its presence in 2021 announcing a new funding round of $8.5 million USD last month, putting its total up to $20 million. Thirdverse Inc. continues to support Sword of Gargantua and as further updates and new project details are revealed, VRFocus will let you know.

Brian Fargo Joins VR Dev Thirdverse’s Advisory Board As Studio Raises Extra $10+ Million

Wasteland creator and InXile Entertainment CEO Brian Fargo has joined the advisory board of Swords of Gargantua developer, Thirdverse, as the company appoints a new CEO.

The studio this week announced that it had appointed Hironao Kunimitsu as its new leader. Kunimitsu previously established gumi in 2007. He looks to lead the company into a new era as it also announces it’s raised $20 million. That’s a combination of the $8.5 million raised in last year’s Series A round and $11.5 million in a Series B.

Thirdverse just launched another massive update to its VR sword fighting game, Swords of Gargantua. It was also the publisher of InXile Entertainment’s competitive VR shooter, Frostpoint, though that game was shut down just a few months after launch. According to a press release, Thirdverse is developing two new VR games across its Japanese and US studios. No details about what either title could be just yet.

Though Frostpoint may not have worked out, Fargo will continue to advise the company as part of his new role. To be clear, the developer is still heading up InXile, which is now a part of Xbox Game Studios, but will be advising Thirdverse on the side.

Swords of Gargantua Dev Thirdverse Secures Further Investment Towards VR Growth

Swords of Gargantua

At the end of 2020 Japanese virtual reality (VR) developer and publisher Thirdverse Inc. revealed a successful Series A funding round, securing $8.5 million USD. Today, the company has revealed a Series B round has brought total funding up to $20 million alongside appointing a new CEO.

Swords of Gargantua

The two funding rounds were led by JAFCO with participation from Presence Capital, Sisu Ventures, Incubate Fund and Animoca Brands. Additionally, the founder of inXile Entertainment – now a Microsoft Xbox Game Studio – Brian Fargo has joined the Thirdverse advisory board.

Thirdverse Inc’s new CEO is Hironao Kunimitsu who helped found the company in 2020 with Kiyoshi Shin, Satoshi Ban and Masaru Ohnogi. Kunimitsu previously helped to establish gumi Inc. in 2007 as well as launching the Virtual Reality Fund, gumi Cryptos Capital and VR incubators in Tokyo, Seoul and Helsinki.

“Thirdverse is building a world-class tech development and publishing team that spans across gaming, VR and blockchain. With the additional funding from Animoca Brands, we also have the trust of key partners and the ability to accelerate the business,” said Kunimitsu in a statement. My goal moving forward is to bring Thirdverse properties to the global market and further drive our multi-year vision of the metaverse.”

Frostpoint VR: Proving Grounds

“This is an exciting time for Thirdverse with our best-in-class team growing and highly supportive investors. We are delighted Kunimitsu-san has joined as CEO to help us rapidly grow our global business and support our mission to create within the virtual metaverse. His expertise in global market expansion and building high-growth, high-scale teams along with his understanding of how to work closely with global companies makes him ideally suited to accelerate our business,” Masaru “Nogi” Ohnogi, Thirdverse co-founder adds.

Currently, Thirdverse Inc. is best known for Swords of Gargantua, a roguelike sword-fighting adventure where players have to descend through to floor 101 where the colossal end-boss, Gargantua awaits. Last week saw the release of Tesseract Abyss 2, expanding the adventure mode with three new enemies, new weapons and more challenging battles.

Whilst Swords of Gargantua has been successful, Thirdverse’s project with inXile Entertainment, Frostpoint VR: Proving Grounds definitely wasn’t. The online-only 10v10 multiplayer launched at the end of 2020 to poor reviews and community feedback. So much so that the servers were closed in May, only five months after launch.

As and when Thirdverse Inc. reveals its future VR plans, VRFocus will let you know.

Swords Of Gargantua’s Big Expansion Launches Next Week

Dark fantasy sword fighting game Swords of Gargantua is getting a big update on Quest and PC next week.

The Tesseract Abyss 2 expansion hits the titles on August 5. Developer Thirdverse has been teasing the update with a number of videos over the past few weeks, the most recent of which you can see below. It offers a very quick glimpse of what to expect from the update.

Namely, Tesseract Abyss 2 will introduce an all-new boss, Galossus, as well as other new weapon and enemy types that will cater to seasoned players of the game. As always, you’ll be able to face the new challenges either in single-player or with friends in the game’s extensive co-op mode.

Thirdverse has put in a huge amount of support for Swords of Gargantua, with several updates since its launch a good few years ago now. The company also has a publishing arm, which last year raised $8.5 million to fund new VR projects.

Strangely the update makes no mention of a release for the PSVR version of the game that released last year. We’ve asked Thirdverse exactly why that is, but it doesn’t sound like this version of the game will be getting the same update next week.

Swords of Gargantua Tesseract Abyss 2 Expansion Arrives in August

Swords of Gargantua

Solo and co-op sword-fighting title Swords of Gargantua has been available for a couple of years now, challenging players to complete floor after floor of ever more brutal enemies. Late 2019 then saw the arrival of an adventure mode called Tesseract Abyss. Today, Japanese developer Thirdverse Inc. has announced its sequel, Tesseract Abyss 2 will be coming to Oculus Quest and PC VR headsets next month.

Swords of Gargantua

The Tesseract Abyss 2 update is set to feature three new enemies to conquer, one which looks fast and nimble, one that’s more of a tank, and then there’s Galossus, a massive beast of an opponent. Players will also find the update contains newly designed, and far more challenging battles to really make them work for those coins. Just like the rest of Swords of Gargantua, Tesseract Abyss 2 will support both solo and co-op gameplay and the coins earned whilst playing can be used to improve your chances.

“We have a very active and deeply dedicated community, and through their direct feedback we created Tesseract Abyss 2, featuring more challenges and enemies than ever before. Additionally, we heard from players that one of the most attractive features of the game is our sword combat, so we really pushed ourselves to create the best sword combat system and overall gaming experience for our current players as well as newcomers to Swords of Gargantua, and we can’t wait to see how players respond when we launch in August,” said Masaru Ohnogi, Co-Founder and CBO of Thirdverse, in a statement.

Whether you’re playing alone or with others (a maximum of 4 can join forces), Swords of Gargantua is all about learning the variety of weapons and then trying to make it through to floor 101 where the colossal end-boss, Gargantua awaits. All the weapons, from the one and two-handed swords, axes, maces and boomerangs to the shields have all been designed with realistic attributes in mind. You can swing, stab, crush and parry but a big two-handed sword will be slow and heavy in comparison to a lighter rapier.

Swords of Gargantua

With a roguelite element, each run-through will provide different floor advancement choices. Choose the long safe route of each floor or try skipping ahead to a deeper floor, where you could encounter major disadvantages and definitely tougher enemies.

The Swords of Gargantua Tesseract Abyss 2 update will be released on 5th August for most currently supported headsets (Oculus Quest and Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index & Windows Mixed Reality). Thirdverse has yet to reveal if and when the update will come to PlayStation VR. For all the latest Swords of Gargantua updates, keep reading VRFocus.

‘Swords of Gargantua’ is Getting Its Second Tesseract Abyss Update in August

Thirdverse today announced that its co-op sword fighting adventure, Swords of Gargantua (2019), is getting its second Tesseract Abyss expansion on August 5th.

This comes nearly two years after the studio released its Tesseract Abyss Adventure Mode expansion, which first brought character and weapon upgrades to the single player and three-player co-op game alongside a bunch of new content.

The Tesseract Abyss 2 Update will bring three new enemies to the game, which includes a massive new foe, Galossus. The studio also says combat has been newly designed for more challenging and strategic battles. Like the first installment, update number 2 lets you accumulate weapons, upgrade your character, and earn coins by playing this mode.

Here’s a quick teaser, which is our first glimpse of the Tesseract Abyss 2 Update:

“We have a very active and deeply dedicated community, and through their direct feedback we created Tesseract Abyss 2, featuring more challenges and enemies than ever before,” Thirdverse co-founder and CBO Masaru Ohnogi said. “Additionally, we heard from players that one of the most attractive features of the game is our sword combat, so we really pushed ourselves to create the best sword combat system and overall gaming experience for our current players as well as newcomers to SWORDS of GARGANTUA, and we can’t wait to see how players respond when we launch in August.”

The update is slated to launch across all supported headsets, including Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest, HTC Vive, HTC Vive COSMOS, Valve Index and Windows Vr headsets. You can find it on the Oculus Store for Quest and Rift, and Steam & Viveport for PC VR headsets.

Considering the video above is labeled ‘Teaser 1’, we’re expecting to hear a lot more about the game’s next big update before it arrives on August 5th.

Co-op Melee Adventure ‘Swords of Gargantua’ for PSVR Gets December Release Date

Swords of Gargantua (2019), the VR sword-fighting action game from Thirdverse previously launched on SteamVR headsets and Oculus Quest, is finally making its way to PSVR.

After multiple delays, the rogue-lite adventure is officially slated to release on PSVR December 8th, 2020. At launch, Swords of Gargantua for PSVR will be available globally in both English and Japanese, priced at $30.

Thirdverse says cross-play will not be available between PlayStation VR and the game’s other platforms, which include SteamVR headsets (Steam, Viveport), Oculus Rift and Oculus Quest.

First launched on PC VR back in June 2019, the rogue-lite game offers both single-player and online four-player co-op, pitting players against hordes of enemies protecting ‘Gargantua’, the titanic overlord residing in the game’s lowest floor.

Players level up weapons and abilities during the fight, which include two-handed swords, axes, maces, boomerangs, shields, and more.

Although the ‘Out Now’ message at the end is a bit premature (as far as PSVR support is concerned), check out the trailer below to see some of its physics-based sword-fighting action:

Swords Of Gargantua Team Delay PSVR Release And PvP Mode

The development team behind the dark fantasy action game Swords of Gargantua announced that the game’s PSVR release has been delayed, alongside the planned content updates that were due to release for all platforms after that.

The Dark Souls-esque VR fantasy game Swords of Gargantua released last year on Quest and PC VR, with cross-buy for Rift for the former. The cooperative sword-fighting game lets you and up to three additional players team up to take down gigantic foes with VR melee combat.

The development team at Thirdverse (formerly known as Yomuneco Inc) had laid out a content plan for the future, with a PSVR release initially slated for spring of this year. While that spring date has clearly come and gone, the team announced on the Swords of Gargantua Discord server that the PSVR release and future content for all platforms has been officially delayed due to the ongoing global pandemic:

We have decided to postpone the release date of the PSVR version of Sword of Gargantua, PvP mode and Ooparts Labyrinth.

The reason behind the postponement is due to a major revision of the development plan due to the impact of prolonged COVID pandemic. As well as future development, we are also working on quality improvements to the currently released version of the game.

We don’t have any updates on release dates as for right now, but when we do, we’ll inform you here. We understand that many of you are eager for the updates above, and we apologize for any inconvenience this update may cause.

While there’s no revised dates for either the PSVR release or the planned PvP content, we hope it’s not much longer of a wait for those fans. It’s worth mentioning that a member of the Thirdverse team recently confirmed to a user in the Discord server that the PSVR and PC VR versions of the game will not support crossplay either.
