Superhot Dev Working On A ‘Core VR Experience’

Superhot Dev Working On A ‘Core VR Experience’

Here’s the best news we’ve heard in a while: it sounds like the makers of Superhot VR are working on a new experience for headsets.

Development lead Piotr Iwanicki seemed to confirm as much in a recent interview with Destructoid. Speaking about the chances of a sequel to not just the smash hit VR shooter, but the entire series as a whole, the developer spoke about the importance of making something that represented a “proper evolution”.

“This is something that really didn’t click in Superhot VR because the animations were all made for a 2D game and it was kind of hacked together to be a VR game,” Iwanicki said. “It’s a hack, it’s not like an animation system that was designed from the ground up. There’s some legacy from the flat-screen version. What we’re developing now is making an even more core VR experience.”

Well, that last bit certainly comes as a surprise. It doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a brand new game on the way, but it definitely seems like there’s more to come. Could we see a new Superhot VR experience that starts from the ground up, without any DNA from the older entries? When asked if VR was integral to the team right now, Iwanicki also noted that it was a “huge part” of his work, though the studio as a whole as “branching out” too.

We’ve reached out to the Superhot team to ask if it is indeed working on a new VR game.

Superhot VR is arguably still the best first-person shooter (FPS) in VR, tasking players with wiping out rooms filled with enemies without being hit. The catch is that time moves only when the player does; if they hold still then bullets will pause in mid-air, giving you time to contemplate your next move. This unique mix of physical movement and strategy made Superhot VR something that really came to life inside headsets.

Elsewhere, Iwanicki spoke a bit about the complexity of VR, and his interest in the standalone headset category. “More devices are coming,” he said. “I’m especially fond of all the ideas for standalone devices. You just buy one thing and it works. That’s an interesting product. So we need a standalone device with hand controllers and room-scale tracking.”

Superhot on Santa Cruz, anyone?

Something for the Weekend: Steam Spreads Some Luna Love

The weekend is supposed to be a time of rest, you end up doing chores and things yes but ultimately it’s the two days of the week where you are more likely to meet friends or family, sit back, relax, chill and do the things that you want to do. Yes, something usually will get in the way but to heck with that! So something for you this weekend.

Steam are, naturally enough, all for this espsecially when they’ve got a sale on for the Lunar New Year. You didn’t know it was the Lunar New Year? Well it is. The Year of the Dog incidentally, and Steam are celebrating with a sale. (Naturally.) Today’s selection of virtual reality (VR) titles picked by VRFocus come from it and for the most part the promotional prices end when the sale does after February 19th 2018. So check out the below and maybe save some cash on something good.

Project CARS 2Project CARS 2

Compatibility: HTC Vive and Oculus Rift

Less of a straight racing videogame than a realistic driving simulator, Project Cars 2 lets players experience what driving is like not just on smooth tarmac race tracks, but also on ice, dirt and mud with the addition of other modes such as rallycross and touring races all of which use realistic physics models to make the experience as close to reality as possible.

Project CARS 2 is currently half price, at £22.49 (GBP) rather than the usual £44.99.

Keep Talking and Nobody ExplodesKeep Talking and Nobody Explodes

Compatibility: HTC Vive and Oculus Rift

Woukd you trust your friends with your life? Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes revolves around one player in VR who’s got a bomb to diffuse, there’s just one problem – how to actually do it. Each bomb is made up of several panels, with wires, dials, timers, codes, symbols and more to figure out. To do this players in the real world have a manual explaining how each particular puzzle works, and it’s only through cooperation and teamwork that avoids everything going boom!

The ultimate test of friendship has a whopping 60% off at present and is available on Steam for a mere £4.39 (GBP) rather than £10.99.

Space Pirate TrainerSpace Pirate Trainer

Compatibility: Windows Mixed Reality, HTC Vive and Oculus Rift

“In the case of Space Pirate Trainer the title has built up a pedigree and fan following for one simple reason, playability. Its design and gameplay mechanics aren’t overly difficult or complicated to learn – which is why it’s great as an introductory experience for new VR players – yet for seasoned pros Space Pirate Trainer offers that old school arcade action of ever bigger and more elaborate attacks that try to whittle those lives away as you try to beat your highscore.” – Read VRFocus‘ Senior Writer Peter Graham’s review of Space Pirate Trainer here.

You can purchase the title on Steam at 34% off, for £7.25 (GBP) rather than £10.99.

superhot vr - first screenshots 8SUPERHOT VR

Compatibility: Windows Mixed Reality, HTC Vive and Oculus Rift

SUPER… HOT. SUPER… HOT. SUPER… HOT! Time moves when you move in this popular videogame for VR and non-VR alike. Survive pristine white rooms filled with vivid red enemies as the air becomes thick with bullet tracer.

You’ve until February 19th to get 25% off of SUPERHOT VR, bringing the price down to £14.24 (GBP) from £18.99.

BattlezoneBattlezone

Compatibility: HTC Vive and Oculus Rift

“Straight from the off, Battlezone lets you know what it is and what you’ll be doing – if you’ve managed to avoid coverage like this. There are no fancy intro screens, video’s, or elongated fluff to wade through, as soon as the videogame starts you’re sat in a hulking tank with lights, screens, levers and all sorts dotted around you. Everything feels and looks solid, giving an overwhelming sense of power and control at your finger tips. The tank design is highly stylized, especially the environments, but the inside isn’t too OTT that this couldn’t be some futuristic concept vehicle.” –  Read our Battlezone review here.

Rebellion have slapped a hefty discount of 66% off on Battlezone, so make sure you buy it now at £10.19 (GBP) rather than the usual cost of £29.99.

Unvierse Sandbox 2Universe Sandbox ²

Compatibility: HTC Vive and Oculus Rift

An Early Access title, this sequel to Giant Army’s popular space simulator is bringing VR support this time around.

“Universe Sandbox ² is a physics-based space simulator that allows you to create, destroy, and interact on an unimaginable scale. It merges real-time gravity, climate, collision, and material interactions to reveal the beauty of our universe and the fragility of our planet.”

If you fancy a bit of playing God with the galaxy (or beyond it) you can for £14.24 (GBP) 25% off its usual price of £18.99.

I Expect You To DieI Expect You To Die

Compatibility: HTC Vive and Oculus Rift

The spy’s the limit in this VR title that puts you in the shoes of a sterotypical secret agent dealing with situations straight out of the genre from the fifties and sixties. With surprises around every corner and the odds stacked against you it’s only a matter of time before you perish. Or is it?

I Expect You To Die is on sale through Steam for the slightly odd price of £11.39 rather than £18.99. A 40% discount.

Sports Bar VR - checkersSports Bar VR

It has enjoyed regular updates since launch, with new mini-games and features being added, such as the addition of a jukebox, updates to multiplayer game-finding features and video streaming capability.

Another specifically for the Lunar New Year sale, which gives 50% off the regular £14.99 (GBP) price to give you a sale value of £7.49.

Raw Data

Compatibility: HTC Vive and Oculus Rift

Raw Data puts the player in the role of part of the Resistance, who are seeking to bring down the corrupt Eden Corporation, who in the future of 2271, control much of the world. The player can choose from several types of heroes, including Saija the Cyber-Ninja, Bishop the Gun Cleric, or Boss the Street Merc.

Raw Data is on sale now for 30% off its usual price of £29.99 (GBP).

The Solus Project

Compatibility: HTC Vive and Oculus Rift

“Many virtual reality (VR) users are waiting for in-depth experiences which have expansive worlds and tell rich, absorbing, immersive stories. VR is perfectly place to get players involved in an entirely new world, and that’s what The Solus Project aims to do… The first thing that becomes apparent is the atmosphere. Superhot VR and Arizona Sunshine Are Getting Retail Releases On PSVR

Superhot VR and Arizona Sunshine Are Getting Retail Releases On PSVR

Two of VR’s biggest games are getting well-deserved physical releases… at least in Europe.

This week the PlayStation Blog’s European site announced that both Vertigo Games’ zombie shooter, Arizona Sunshine and the wonderful Superhot VR would both be coming to retailers in boxed form (to be clear, as separate products, not a bundle). Superhot will arrive later this month on February 28th while Arizona Sunshine is just a little further out on March 21st.

These games have been on the digital PlayStation Store on PS4 for a while now, and chances are you’ve already played at least one of them (Superhot is a consistent high performer in the monthly PS Store charts). For PSVR owners without reliable internet connections, though, it’s the perfect chance to finally experience them (though you’ll likely still have to install updates when you put the discs in). Or, for the collectors out there, they’ll make for lovely new additions to any shelf.

Arizona Sunshine pits players in the middle of a zombie apocalypse trying to make their way across the harsh desert while they fight off hordes of the undead. It also managed to win our 2016 Game of the Year award. Superhot, meanwhile, has a unique mechanic in which time moves only when the player does, allowing you to dodge bullets and then take careful aim and return fire. Either one would do your PSVR proud though, if you’re going to get Arizona Sunshine, we recommend picking up the PSVR Aim controller alongside it.

There’s no word on a possible boxed release in the US right now. UK pricing for either game has not yet been announced.

Studio Behind ‘SUPERHOT’ Looking for More VR Developers

It’s amazing how well SUPERHOT (2016), the unforgettably stylized action game, worked when translated to virtual reality. Now, the developers at SUPERHOT Team are looking to get more hands on deck as they dive deeper into the world of VR development.

Once the developer relations guru at Oculus, Callum Underwood has since moved on to work as somewhat of a talent scout at indie games publisher Raw Fury. Making his way over to the Superhot Team’s HQ, Underwood tweeted out to his followers, many of whom continue to follow from his days at Oculus, that the Polish indie devs were “looking to hire some more VR developers.”

While Underwood alludes to the fact that many have left the studio on their own “spiritual journey[s] and might never come back,” it means the Superhot devs are still dedicating resources to VR development—a good sign coming from the team that produced our 2017 HTC Vive Game of the Year.

Farpoint is now only £15.99, down from £24.99.

Tekken 7

Tekken 7 Akuma screenshot

Well, Tekken 7 certainly isn’t much of a VR experience, as you only really get to view a few battles in VR, and can’t expect that to entertain for long – but it’s a great fighting experience, and one well worth the money at this price point.

Tekken 7 is now only £29.99, down from £49.99.

Road to VR’s 2017 Game of the Year Awards

It’s been a fantastic year for virtual reality games, and with VR titles hailing from ambitious indie studios and well-established developers alike, the prospect of having truly great games in VR is decidedly here. We at the Road to VR editorial staff, having explored content across VR platforms over the last year, have deliberated over the past few weeks and have come to a decision on 2017’s top honors.

Because the medium is still in its infancy, we felt it wasn’t possible to provide a meaningful set of awards based around individual genres at this time. Instead, this year we focused on the much broader task of weighing games according to the most immersive platforms available: Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PlayStation VR.

Games eligible for Road to VR‘s Game of the Year award must be available to the public on or before December 1st to allow for ample deliberation. Games must also natively support the target platform as to ensure full operability.

Without further ado, here are this year’s winners.

Lone Echo

Developer: Ready at Dawn

Available On: Oculus

Release Date: July 20th, 2017

As an Oculus exclusive title developed specifically for Touch, this first-person sci-fi adventure amazingly grounds you in the story while letting you fly free in zero-G. The game seems to have everything going for it too; incredible visuals, lifelike motion capture, quality writing, quality voice actors, excellent object interaction, detailed hand presence thanks to dynamic hand poses… we could go on. And we will.

Sometimes VR games overstep their bounds into territory the medium just can’t make good on right now. Lone Echo respects these boundaries while offering a locomotion style that is so freeing—while also being widely nausea-free—that it can even be used for its fast-paced multiplayer counterpart Echo Arena. It’s not only easy to control, but also contributes to immersion; you’re able to easily internalize how the world works and accept it without really thinking after only a few minutes of on-boarding. That’s an important part of the Presence equation for sure.

The game may feature cinematic sci-fi settings seemingly pulled from the set of Gravity (2013), but the star of the show is without a doubt Olivia. The early part of the game is filled with engaging ways to interact with her, creating a genuine feeling that she’s actually there—something that’s easy to screw up with poorly executed mocap, bad dialogue, or lackluster voice acting—basically anything that reveals her to be a hollow simulacra and not the living, breathing, ball-busting starship captain she is. Yet, the developers did a great job of making Olivia real enough for the player to connect with.

Lone Echo isn’t without flaws; nothing is. Puzzles show a great affinity for wow-factor and make good use of motion controls, but ultimately could be more complex. Despite this, Lone Echo it represents a shining light pointing towards greater, more in-depth games that don’t necessarily rely on old gameplay styles. Lone Echo has embraced the medium fully, searching for the most compelling way to deliver deep immersion.

SUPERHOT VR

Developer: SUPERHOT Team

Available On: Steam, Oculus, PSN

Release Date: May 25th, 2017

Since the launch of Touch in December 2016, the distinction between the sort of games made available on Oculus Home and Steam has become less pronounced over time. Undoubtedly, the company’s ‘walled garden’ approach has been unpopular for its creation of exclusivity where open standards would better serve the public. Though it’s hard to deny that Oculus’ concerted investment in motion controller-supporting VR games in 2017 hasn’t resulted in some incredible titles that may not otherwise exist. Case in point, the Oculus-funded SUPERHOT VR that later found a resounding success on Steam.

It’s honestly hard to believe that the original flatscreen Superhot (2016) wasn’t conceived for VR in the first place, considering how well the game’s slow motion, red guy-shattering premise works with a headset and two motion controllers. Built from the ground-up for VR headsets, Superhot VR isn’t a lengthy game when playing through story mode, but its ability to immerse with its low poly style and physical movement-based gameplay immediately make it one of those “easy to learn, hard to master” games that are undoubtedly worth coming back to—if only to perfect your trick shots, and delve deeper into the feeling of being some sort of badass from The Matrix (1999).

Stylish, addictive, immersive. All of these words come to mind when we think about Superhot VR. Now that the developers have pushed their ‘Forever Update’, several challenge modes make the game that much more difficult, and ridiculously fun.

Farpoint

DeveloperImpulse Gear

Available OnPSN

Release Date: May 16, 2017

Farpoint made its debut on PlayStation VR as one of the first ‘full’ AAA titles to delivery an engaging single player campaign to didn’t feel like it ended just as things were getting started. The VR FPS also launched with full support for the PS Aim controller which worked seamlessly with the game’s two-handed weapons, including an intuitive method for switching between them with a quick and funcional gesture.

While Farpoint’s story didn’t enrapture us, it was a serviceable foundation for immersive and fun gunplay. The game’s weapons didn’t do much to break new ground—mostly falling into the usual tropes of shotgun, assault rifle, sniper rifle—but there’s something to be said about great execution of a known formula. The weapons themselves wouldn’t be much fun without the right mixture of enemies; a slew of interesting enemies with well-defined roles was a great match for the weapons on offer, giving the player clear and fun ways to develop a strategy and prioritize enemies in the midst of battle. And what’s more, just as things start to feel a little too familiar the game throws a curveball at the player, introducing new and quite different enemies, as well as a number of new weapons to use against them.

Farpoint already felt substantial at launch, but the game recently got a free ‘Versus Expansion Pack’ which added a brand new PVP mode—which takes advantage of a 15 new weapon variants for 1v1 combat—further rounding out the title’s value proposition.

We’re looking forward to next year’s awards with the expectation of even more great games and platforms to choose from.

Lone Echo, Farpoint, SUPERHOT VR and More Nominated for 2017 Game Awards

Last year the annual Game Awards introduced a virtual reality (VR)/augmented reality (AR) category for the first time and now the nominations for the 2017 awards have been revealed.

Naturally, the category features five of the best and most well-known VR titles available across multiple platforms. The first is SUPERHOT VR, which originally launched on Oculus Rift with Touch support before being ported to HTC Vive and PlayStation VR. The title has seen near universal acclaim due to its particular gameplay style where time only moves when you do. So there’s plenty of slow-mo bullet dodging and gunplay as you try to kill enemies.

superhot vr - first screenshots 8

Next up is Star Trek: Bridge Crew for the same headsets. Created by Ubisoft’s in-house studio Red Storm Entertainment, the videogame features a single-player mode but the core of the title revolves around its multiplayer, where four people take on the role of either Captain, Helm, Engineering or Tactical, aboard the USS Aegis, completing missions for the Federation.

Then there’s a dual nomination in the form of Ready at Dawn and Oculus Studios’ Lone Echo and Echo Arena. The first is a single-player campaign set among the stars where you play a robot in a mining outpost. An anomaly suddenly appears causing all sorts of chaos. While the latter is a separate, multiplayer esports title set in the same universe, where players battle in teams in various zero-gravity arenas.

The final two are PlayStation VR exclusives, first-person shooter (FPS) Farpoint which launched back in May alongside the Aim controller and Resident Evil 7 biohazard. Farpoint is another sci-fi adventure where you find yourself stranded on an alien world filled with all sorts of nasty hostiles. Whereas Resident Evil 7 biohazard needs no introduction. Launched earlier this year for PlayStation 4 with VR support, this latest version has proven to be extremely popular. Due to it also being a standard console title, Resident Evil 7 biohazard also features in the Best Game Direction and Best Audio Design categories.

The public can vote for their favourites through The Game Awards official website, direct on Google Search by typing in “the game awards vote” in the Google search bar, or for select categories via Twitter DM and Facebook Messenger by following The Game Awards accounts.

The awards will be livestreamed through various outlets including YouTube, Twitch, Facebook Live and many more on 7th December 2017.

SUPERHOT VR – Neue Inhalte in Entwicklung

SUPERHOT
