‘Superhot VR’ is Coming to Oculus Quest

Superhot VR (2016), the ultra-successful slow-mo VR shooter, is coming to the newly announced Oculus Quest.

Speaking to Superhot Team here at Oculus Connect 5, we confirmed that Superhot VR is indeed coming to Oculus Quest, the company’s high-end standalone VR headset previously named Santa Cruz.

The game is currently being shown as a part of a large-scale demo venue with Quest, and is available to conference-goers to try out.

Superhot VR is said to launch on Quest, although it’s uncertain if it will be a day-one launch title when the headset arrives to consumers sometime in Spring 2019. Considering the game is complete enough to demo to the public though, there’s a good chance the hard-hitting premium title will come as a day-one title.

Oculus Quest, announced today at the Connect 5 developer conference, is a $400 standalone VR headset with positional tracking for both headset and controllers, and represents a mobile headset somewhere in between the PC-driven Oculus Rift and the casual 3DOF headset Oculus Go.

‘Superhot’ Studio: No Current Plans for VR Version of ‘MIND CONTROL DELETE’ Expansion

With the unique ability to control time with your movements, SUPERHOT VR (2016) can make you feel like you’re in The Matrix. It’s on all major VR platforms, which cemented the studio a whopping $2 million revenue over the 2019 holiday season alone. Since then, the indie studio behind the game has been relatively quiet about the potential for future VR projects. Although there’s been some talk of VR being a possibility for its SUPERHOT: MIND CONTROL DELETE expansion, it seems it just isn’t in the cards—at least for now.

Update (July 10th, 2020): The news was served up yesterday that MIND CONTROL DELETE would come to PC and console on July 16th, free to all owners of the base game before that date. And no, it doesn’t seem a VR version is being planned for what the studio calls a “standalone game set in the world of Superhot.”

The studio responded directly to fans asking for an update on their VR plans, casting doubt on whether we’ll ever get a VR adaptation of the franchise’s next big installment.

Original article (September 11th, 2018): Despite the overwhelmingly positive reception of Superhot VR on all platforms, the studio has so far said that the upcoming standalone expansion, Superhot: Mind Control Delete will not include a VR component. The studio describes the expansion, which is currently available in Early Access, as a “rogue-like twist on the linear nature of the original SUPERHOT.

A VR version of Mind Control Delete might not be completely off the table however. Speaking to the official Vive Blog—for the occasion of Superhot VR becoming available on Viveport—PR Manager Szymon Krukowski of the SUPERHOT Team indicates that consumer interest will play a factor in whether the expansion sees VR support.

“Honestly for now we are focusing on MIND CONTROL DELETE but at the same time we never really left VR. If there is enough interest in [MIND CONTROL DELETE] we might try recreating something similar for VR,” Krukowski said.

When asked what’s next for the studio, Krukowski confirmed there are some prototypes in the works beyond Mind Control Delete.

“Most of the team is deep in developing SUPERHOT: MIND CONTROL DELETE,” said Krukowski. “At the same time though we are working on a few prototypes. Some of those are really hard to call games even. Piotr [the studio’s game director] is always doing something on the side. He doesn’t stop. It is almost compulsive. We love to experiment, create stuff that is engaging for us. Honestly though let’s finish [Mind Control Delete] and than see what happens.”

It’s interesting that Krukowski says the studio “never really left VR.” This may refer to the other projects the studio is working on; earlier this year a job posting indicated the company was seeking a Producer for “a shiny new VR project,” and the studio further said that their next VR title would not be a sequel to Superhot VR, but “a proper evolution.”

It’s our understanding that the original development of Superhot VR was funded by Oculus Studios; given the apparent success of that project, it’s possible the pair are working together again on something separate from Mind Control Delete, though nothing has been announced. Maybe we’ll hear something at Oculus’ Connect developer conference later this month?

Firewall Zero Hour is PlayStation VR’s Top Game in August

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has now released the top downloaded videogames for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR, revealing to probably no one’s surprise that First Contact Entertainment’s tactical first-person shooter Firewall Zero Hour  has clinched the top spot.

Firewall Zero Hour - Screenshot (E3 2018)

As usual no figures have been mentioned with the title knocking top ten regular Job Simulator from the number one spot it quite often achieves even after launching almost two years ago.

The rest of the PlayStation VR top ten for August is as follows:

  1. Firewall Zero Hour
  2. Job Simulator
  3. Surgeon Simulator: Experience Reality
  4. SUPERHOT VR
  5. Killing Floor: Incursion
  6. Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality
  7. Arizona Sunshine
  8. Electronauts
  9. Until Dawn: Rush of Blood
  10. PlayStation VR Worlds

Firewall Zero Hour - Screenshot (E3 2018)

It’s easy to understand why Firewall Zero Hour achieved the number one position. The FPS has received rave reviews with even VRFocus giving the PlayStation VR exclusive a full five-stars, saying: “Firewall Zero Hour has managed to avoid many of the common pitfalls of VR online multiplayers and add its own interesting twist to the military FPS genre. The lobby system could use some improvements, but otherwise its a finely crafted title that will be of great interest to FPS fans.”

If you own a PlayStation VR and have so far resisted the temptation to purchase Firewall Zero Hour then you’re missing out on four vs four player action where teamwork and communication is key to winning the multiplayer missions. Players take on the role of a mercenary contractor, charged with protecting sensitive data in a laptop. There are nine map locations spread across Russia, the Middle East and the UK. Players will be able to use in-game currency to upgrade and customise their character.

While the videogame does support PlayStation’s DualShock 4 controller, and PlayStation Move (kind of), First Contact Entertainment has designed the gameplay to ultimately use the PlayStation Aim controller.

Sony Introduces Two Game Bundles for PlayStation VR

PlayStation VR is less than two years old yet its managed to become the most popular high-end headset with sales surpassing 3 million units. That’s been largely thanks to Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE’s) massive PlayStation 4 user base and aggressive pricing of the headset, with almost continuous deals and discounts. Those continue today, with SIE announcing two new bundles each with a couple of popular titles thrown in.

PSVR Sept Bundles - Creed

The first bundle features Creed: Rise to Glory and Superhot VR. The latter needs no introduction as it has become a firm favourite with virtual reality (VR) fans for its slow-mo action. While Survios’ Creed: Rise to Glory is brand new, putting players in the shoes of Adonis Creed as he aims for championship glory.

The PlayStation VR Creed: Rise to Glory and Superhot VR Bundle includes the headset, PlayStation Camera, Two PlayStation Move Motion controllers, Demo Disc 2.0 and a digital game voucher for both titles. The bundle hits store shelves on 25th September – the same day as the launch of Creed: Rise to Glory – across the U.S. and Canada for $349.99 USD (MSRP) / $449.99 CAD (MSRP).

While the second bundle features Astro Bot Rescue Mission and MossFollowing a similar path as the last bundle, customers get a brand new videogame and one that’s been out a little while. Moss is the cute puzzle platformer featuring tiny mouse Quill from Polyarc which received a full five-stars in VRFocus’ review. Astro Bot Rescue Mission is the next title from Sony Japan Studio, featuring the lovable robots first seen in PlayStation VR Worlds.

The PlayStation VR Astro Bot Rescue Mission and Moss Bundle includes the headsets, PlayStation Camera, Demo Disc 2.0 and a digital game voucher for both titles. The bundle arrives across the U.S. and Canada on 2nd October, the same day as the launch of Astro Bot Rescue Mission, for $299.99 USD (MSRP) / $379.99 CAD (MSRP).

Currently there’s no news on whether these bundles will be made available in Europe or other territories. If that happens, VRFocus will let you know.

There are going to be some great new ways to pick up PSVR very soon.

Sony today introduced two new bundles for its PS4 VR headset, which it recently confirmed had sold over three million units. Both bundle the kit with some of its best games along with some of its most anticipated titles for the holiday season.

The first is a $349.99 USD/$449.99 CAD package that includes the headset, PlayStation Camera, two Move controllers and then a physical copy of Survios’ upcoming VR boxing game, Creed: Rise to Glory, and a digital copy of super-popular VR first-person shooter (FPS), Superhot. Both games make great use of the Move controllers. It launches on the same day as Creed itself on September 25th.

Next up is a cheaper $299.99 USD/$379.99 CAD set. This one doesn’t have Move controllers, but it does include a physical copy of the highly-anticipated Astro Bot Rescue Mission as well as a digital copy of the critically acclaimed VR adventure game, Moss. Both of these games are played with a DualShock 4, which you already have with your PS4 purchase, so there’s no need for the Move controllers. The bundle launches on October 2nd, which is when Astro Bot itself goes live.

Those are two pretty great bundles, though we’ll admit we’re surprised not to see Firewall Zero Hour included in either one. Sony is no doubt looking to pick up steam with PSVR sales as the headset enters its third holiday season.

Sadly both bundles are only confirmed for the US and Canada right now.

Guns’n’Stories: Bulletproof VR

“Mention wave shooters to a VR player and they’ll probably roll their eyes. Titles in this genre need to have something special about them to even be worthwhile. The Secret Locations Blasters of the Universe had it and Guns’n’Stories: Bulletproof VR looks like it might as well. So long as MiroWin adds plenty of content during early access then Guns’n’Stories: Bulletproof VR could very well be a hit.” – Read VRFocus’ Senior Staff Writer Peter Graham preview of Guns’n’Stories: Bulletproof VR.

Time Carnage

Time Carnage VR

Time Carnage is well-made, and is a fine, competent example of its genre, with some excellent music and sound design, though it ultimately fails to stand out amidst many other similar titles that litter VR videogame libraries. HoloLAB Champions

HoloLAB Champions

“As a normal piece of VR content HoloLAB Champions is short but sweet, offering an informative introduction into the world of chemistry. This isn’t the sort of title where you can go all mad scientist and create crazy concoctions – there’s Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-Ality for that – but it’s not meant to be. As a teaching tool it’s quite easy to see how VR has a place within education.” – Read VRFocus’ Senior Staff Writer Peter Graham review of HoloLAB Champions.

PlayStation E3 Keynote Puts Blockbusters Center Stage, Relegating VR to the Sidelines

With mostly prior confirmed PSVR titles presenting at E3 2018, we expected Sony to dedicate a few moments during its E3 2018 keynote to highlight the platform’s upcoming VR games, of course with the understanding that high-profile PS4 titles would mostly overshadow VR titles. Well, that’s a bit of an understatement.

After all was said and done, the only PSVR title to get time on the big stage was the PSVR-compatible title Trover Saves the Universe, a platformer from Justin Roiland’s Squanch Games that supports both PSVR and PS4. As one of the most tepidly-received games to debut at Sony’s patently declamatory presentation (which was first held in church-like venue to show off The Last of Us Part II, and then in a secondary auditorium to show the company’s other big-budget games), the level of evangelization of the platform and its upcoming VR games was lacking to say the least; it was a decisive emphasis on blockbusters over less crucial titles, and therefore PSVR in general.

Not even Beat Saber, the impressively successful VR indie title that’s done over two million dollars in revenue—practically unheard of for an indie game that hasn’t seen funding support from one of the big VR players—got time on the big stage. At-home viewers were treated to only a few seconds of the game during the intermission while actual attendees of the PlayStation E3 keynote moved from one auditorium to another.

Instead, Sony quietly put out a PSVR highlights reel shortly after the presentation ended, which wasn’t shown during the E3 keynote. Games shown in the video below (in chronological order) include: Trover Saves the Universe, Tetris Effect, Moss, Ghost Giant, Beat Saber, Firewall Zero Hour, DOOM VFR, Creed: Rise to Glory, Evasion, Star Trek: Bridge Crew, The Persistence, Star Child, Skyrim VR, Jupiter & Mars, AstroBot: Rescue Mission, Vacation Simulator, and Superhot VR—many of which were previously known or even launched last year.

Sony has more games coming to PSVR (that much is certain), and there’s also a number of new games being shown at E3 2018 for the platform too. Although unlike Oculus or HTC, Sony’s gaming lifeblood is still inexorably tied to its traditional console titles, and as the PS4 console inevitably starts what PlayStation Chief Tsuyoshi Kodera calls the “final phase of its life cycle,” consolidating that investment where it counts the most—in its big budget console exclusives—makes it clear where the company’s priorities lie.

For comparison, last year’s E3 PlayStation presentation featured six PSVR games presented on stage: Skyrim VR, The Inpatient, Starchild, Monsters of the Deep: Final Fantasy XV, Bravo Team, and Moss, all of which amounted to seven minutes of stage time. It wouldn’t have been hard to sandwich six or seven extra minutes into this year’s presentation, but obviously Sony thought differently for whatever reason. Maybe more and better is coming. Maybe now just wasn’t the time to trumpet its VR platform.

We’ve had the chance to try out many of the newly debuted titles (including Trover Saves the Universe), and it’s clear these games are either commensurate, or above last year’s games in quality, which means really only one thing: Sony has decided to publicly care less about PSVR for now. While good games worth your time are still coming to the platform, the company just didn’t feel like PSVR deserved the limelight this go around—not a guarantee that they’ve given up on PSVR, but noteworthy just the same.

For a VR headset selling at the all-time low of $200 during its ‘Days of Play’ sale, the company really ought to care what new players think though. As the headset becomes more and more affordable, Sony needs to reassure the world even more so that PSVR isn’t a stagnant platform, lest it fall entirely off the radar at the most important gaming expo on the planet. In the end, it’s all a bit of shame, as important and extremely fun titles like Sony Japan Studio’s Astro Bot Rescue Mission finally dial into what makes the platform great, but are completely overshadowed by what the higher-ups most likely considers the safest investments for now.

SUPERHOT Team Searching for a Producer for “shiny new VR project”

The team behind the SUPERHOT franchise is looking for a producer for “a shiny new VR project,” according to a recent job posting on the company’s website.

The core team is working on updates to the studio’s latest release, the standalone game SUPERHOT: Mind Control Deletebut admits this year will feature “a roadmap of really really really cool new platforms […] and two brand new projects sitting in the launch pads.” One of those brand new projects is confirmed to be a VR title.

According to the job listing, the producer is tasked with “own[ing] the heck out of one of those brand new projects,” which is said to involve working with the Superhot team in Lodz, Poland, and a remote team distributed around the world. “They probably haven’t worked together before,” the job description says. “Some of them might speak different languages. It’s gonna be fun, but definitely a challenge, so we hope you’re organized and happy to do actual work every now and then.”

The studio’s first hint that another VR title was in the works came earlier this year when one-time Oculus dev relations guru Callum Underwood started work as a talent scout at indie games publisher Raw Fury, tweeting out that the Superhot team was putting the call out for more VR developers.

There’s only sparse info about the upcoming Superhot virtual reality title. Speaking to Destructoid recently, the studio said the upcoming VR game shouldn’t really be considered a sequel to Superhot VR (2016), but rather “a proper evolution.”

“[Having enemies move with intention was] something that really didn’t click in Superhot VR because the animations were all made for a 2D game and it was kind of hacked together to be a VR game. It’s a hack, it’s not like an animation system that was designed from the ground up. There’s some legacy from the flat-screen version. What we’re developing now is making an even more core VR experience,” the studio told Destructioid.

So while the upcoming Superhot Japan isn’t getting VR support (for now), the team is definitely working on another Superhot VR game that looks to be a truly made-for-VR title.

SUPERHOT Developers Potentially Working On New VR Experience

Starting life as a humble browser-based videogame before graduating up the ranks to become a fully-fledged immersive virtual reality (VR) experience, SUPERHOT VR has been praised extensively for its innovation and style, now it seems there might be more to come from the development team behind the title.

A recent interview with Team Superhot development lead Piotr Iwanicki seems to suggest that he and his team are currently working on an ‘evolution’ of SUPERHOT VR, and that this mysterious project have VR as a major influence.

superhot_press_screenshot_13

Iwanicki was speaking to Destructoid about the chances of a sequel to the popular VR shooter, and how his expectations of what can be produced now have been raised.

“This is something that really didn’t click in Superhot VR because the animations were all made for a 2D game and it was kind of hacked together to be a VR game,” Iwanicki said. “It’s a hack, it’s not like an animation system that was designed from the ground up. There’s some legacy from the flat-screen version. What we’re developing now is making an even more core VR experience.”

This of course doesn’t confirm that the team are working on a brand new VR title, but it does suggest that interest in developing for VR is being maintained. When asked about how much of an influence VR had one the team at the moment, Iwanicki said that VR remained a huge part of the work the studio was doing.

Iwanicki also expressed his interest in the new standalone headsets coming to market, such as the HTC Vive Focus and the Oculus Go and how such devices simplify the VR experience: “More devices are coming. I’m especially fond of all the ideas for standalone devices. You just buy one thing and it works. That’s an interesting product. So we need a standalone device with hand controllers and room-scale tracking.”

Superhot VR: Entwickler arbeiten an neuem VR-Nachfolgertitel

Superhot VR – Team entwickelt neuen VR-Nachfolger
