10 Games Getting Quest 2 Enhancements at Launch

Oculus Quest 2 launches tomorrow, bringing along with it higher resolution, higher refresh rate, and a cutting edge Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 chipset to drive native VR games on the company’s most powerful standalone headset yet.

Although all games out of the box will benefit from Quest 2’s overall bump in hardware specs to some extent, there’s already a few Quest games out there that are getting graphical overhauls just in time for tomorrow’s launch to make good use of the upgrades.

To squeeze out everything Quest 2 has to offer, some developers have already gone into their previously released Quest games and optimized for the headset’s ‘experimental’ 90Hz support and ability to push higher quality assets and textures thanks to Snapdragon XR2. While this list may evolve as new games come to light, here’s the 10 games we’ve found that are going to benefit from developer optimization:

Here’s Superhot VR Running On Quest 2 And 1 Side-By-Side

Want to see Superhot VR running side-by-side in Quest 1 and 2? Of course you do, so here you are.

Yes, Superhot VR has already been updated in anticipation of Quest 2’s launch on October 13th. According to developer Superhot team, the game has more detailed textures and other quality of life improvements. The big change here, though, is support for 90FPS which we can’t actually show you. Not just because YouTube goes up to 60FPS but because Facebook hasn’t actually enabled 90FPS support for apps yet. When it does, Superhot will be ready and waiting and should appear smoother than it ever has on a standalone.

Superhot VR Quest 2 Side-By-Side

Check out the video below. We’re not branding this with the usual graphics comparison tag because, well, there’s not much to compare; they look about on-par with each other.

It can be hard to really pick apart the differences between the two versions, especially when on a flat-screen. Suffice to say that, inside Quest 2, Superhot VR’s clean minimalist sheen pops out more than ever. With Quest 2’s sharper screen resolution the particle effects stemming from an enemy’s burst head or broken limb are all the more striking.

Other than that? Well, the original Quest port was already first-rate and this is pretty much the same story. Even a year and a half on from Quest launch the game remains at the top of our best Quest games list and, even if it had never been updated for Quest 2, we’d be telling you to play it.

Will you be checking out Superhot VR when Quest 2 launches next week? Let us know in the comments below!

Superhot Quest 2 Patch Improves Graphics, 90HZ Support ‘When Available’

Excellent VR puzzle-shooter, Superhot VR, will be getting a fresh update for Oculus Quest 2, improving the games’ visuals and more.

Superhot VR Quest 2 Patch Incoming

The update should be available by the time the headset arrives on October 13th. The team behind the game is promising not only visual updates like higher resolution and more detailed textures but also more bug fixes and Cloud Save support for anyone transitioning from Quest 1 to Quest 2, too. Check out the announcement trailer above.

Perhaps the most important part of the update, though, will be support for 90Hz. Well, that is once 90Hz is available; Quest will only feature beta support for the improved refresh rate at launch next week. Facebook says developers will be able to turn on 90Hz support in their own games soon after launch.

Superhot VR remains at the top of our best Quest games list 18 months on from the headset’s launch, so we’re happy to see the game get a refresh for Quest 2. In the game, time moves only when you do, allowing you to slowly manipulate action sequences by moving your body only slightly. You’re tasked with clearing out levels of enemies with the tools given to you, but take just one hit and you’ll be sent back to the start of a sequence. To this day it makes for one of the most stylish and joyous games you can play with a headset on.

Quest 2 plays every game that released for the original device by default, but developers have the option to take advantage of the added horsepower inside the new device. We’ve already seen improvements to games like Waltz of the Wizard and the upcoming The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners and we’re hoping to see even more updates as we get closer to launch next week.

Pre-Ordered Quest 2? One Of Its Best Games Is On Sale Today Only

Darn Superhot VR for making me write on a Saturday but this deal is too good to past up, especially if you pre-ordered a Quest 2.

The slow-motion shooter, in which time moves only when you do, is 42% off on the Quest store for today only. That puts it at $14.99 for the next 19 or so hours at the time of this writing, and its developers say this will be the only discount the Quest version sees for a while, so be quick!

Why should you especially make a move if you’re pre-ordered Quest 2? Because every game on the original headset runs on the new one, so you can start building out your library now and then have loads of content ready to play when your kit works.

Not only that but Superhot VR remains at the top of our list of best Quest games. It originally launched on PC VR headsets, but without any wires holding you back on Quest, the game feels like it was made for the platform. You have to clear levels of enemies, dodging bullets and punches in slow motion. It’s one of the most stylish, cinematic experiences you can have in VR and you can’t miss it.

You should definitely be keeping an eye out for other deals in the weeks leading up to launch on October 13th, then. Of course, Quest 2 will also come with a launch line-up of new games, including The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners. You can keep track of what’s coming on October 13th right here.

Pico Neo 2 Lite Is A 6DOF Standalone Headset With Superhot, But Only For China For Now

The Pico Neo 2 Lite might have dreams of one day taking on the Oculus Quest 2, and it’s launching with one of VR’s best games.

The Pico Neo 2 Lite is a new consumer-oriented version of the original Pico Neo 2, which launched worldwide earlier this year for enterprise. According to a Chinese report (thanks to Callum Hurley for tipping us off), the headset starts at 3799 yuan (about $560) for a 64GB version and features a ‘4K HD screen’ with 6GB RAM (same as Quest 2) and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, which doesn’t measure up to the XR2 chipset used in the Quest 2.

Pico Neo 2 Lite Gets Superhot

Pico Neo 2 Lite Price Superhot

Two images make it seem like the Neo 2 Lite comes with a comfort strap that looks similar to Quest 2’s Elite Strap, which must be bought separately. However we wouldn’t expect this to include eye-tracking like the more expensive variant of the original Neo 2. Neo 2 also uses electromagnetic anti-occlusion tracking to achieve 6DOF support.

Pico has launched consumer headsets in the west before – like the 3DOF, Oculus Go-like Goblin – but they’ve never made much of an impact. The Neo 2 Lite, however, is launching with one of VR’s very best games – Superhot VR. It’s only the second standalone headset to get a native version of the VR great. It could be a signal that Pico is committed to building out a significant ecosystem for the platform, which is what its headsets have really been lacking in the past.

Pico Neo 2 Lite Superhot

Then again, there’s still be a long way to go to build the kind of library seen on Quest today, though the Pico Neo 2 Lite does apparently support wireless streaming on SteamVR, a feature we won’t even see with the release of Quest 2.

We’ve reached out to Pico for more information on the device and to ask after a western release. We’ll let you know if we hear back.

Humble VR Sale Sees Big Discounts For Skyrim VR, Superhot & More

A new VR sale on the Humble Store has cropped up that’s offering some pretty big discounts on some prominent PC VR games.

It seems like it’s sale time of the year, because this new Humble VR Sale is running at the same time as the Oculus Summer Sale, and even features some of the same titles too. This Humble sale is only set to last a little while longer though, wrapping up at 10am PST on August 6th, whereas the Oculus Summer Sale runs until the end of August 9.

Perhaps the biggest bargain in the Humble VR Sale is on Skyrim VR, which is 70% off and down to just $17.99. Skyrim VR remains one of the most popular and iconic VR experiences to date, and it’s rare to see it come down in price so heavily. Bethesda’s other VR title, Fallout 4 VR, is discounted down 70% as well, available for $17.99.

If you’re looking something more crime-based (in which case we’re worried about you), L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files is 50% off, bringing it down to just $14.99. Or if sci-fi is your more your jam, then you could check out Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality, down 30% for $20.99, or Borderlands 2 VR, down 50% for $24.99.

Superhot is also available for just $14.99, down 40%, which might be a good option if you don’t feel like buying it in a bundle with Pistol Whip in the Oculus Summer Sale.

While all these games are on sale through the Humble Store, you’ll receive a Steam key to redeem the game after purchase. Unlike the Oculus Summer Sale where your purchases can only be used with Oculus hardware, redeeming a game on Steam will let you use the game on any SteamVR-compatible headset.

It’s also worth mentioning that all of these Humble discounts are for PC VR versions of games only, and not for the Oculus Quest. Even if the game supports cross-buy between Rift and Quest, you won’t get that advantage from these games — cross-buy only applies to PC VR games bought on the Oculus Store, and not Steam versions of games.

You can view the full list of discounted games in the Humble VR Sale here, which runs until 10am PST on August 6.

In addition to those spotlighted games, there are more Quest VR games on sale as well. Some standouts I personally recommend as great value for the money are Drop Dead: Dual Strike Edition for 33% off ($10.00), Journey of the Gods for 25% off ($22.49), Moss for 33% off ($19.99), and Apex Construct for 25% off ($14.99).

Superhot Dev Continuing To Experiment With VR, But New Game Skips Support

The Superhot Team indicated that there are ‘no plans’ for a VR version of their upcoming new entry in the Superhot franchise, Mind Control Delete, set to release on PC, Xbox and PS4 on July 16. However, the team isn’t ruling out another VR title in the future.

Mind Control Delete is described as a game “built on the foundations of Superhot and Superhot VR” which promises a bigger campaign, more mechanics and more skills than previous games. Even better, owners of the original Superhot game (who bought it before July 16, 2020) will receive a copy of Mind Control Delete in their library automatically upon release. Mind Control Delete has already been available in Early Access for a while, but the team says it has “rebooted and redesigned core parts of the game a half dozen times” since then, resulting in a “better, sharper, bigger” game.

It’s bad news for those hoping for VR support though — on Twitter the team was adamant that there are ‘no plans for VR’ with Mind Control Delete at the moment.

Likely due to the popularity of the VR version of the original game, the Mind Control Delete Steam page even has a whole section of the description dedicated to whether it supports VR (or if it will in the future):

MCD is a regular, non-VR title. It’s designed for conventional screens and longer play sessions. If you played and enjoyed SUPERHOT VR, you’ll have a blast playing the original SUPERHOT and MCD as well.

Just like making SUPERHOT VR required making an entirely new game with new mechanics, new levels, and a new story, so would our next VR game differ from MCD and everything else we’ve done so far. We’re always working on new things, but great things take time to build. It may be a long time before we’re happy with the next great VR thing to show you.

That makes it sound like there could be another Superhot VR game in development. We reached out to the team’s Callum Underwood, who clarified that the developer is always experimenting with VR, but has no new official product to confirm right now. “We are definitely playing with cool stuff in VR but are never sure if they will end up being products or just experiments,” he said.

While there may not be a VR version of Mind Control Delete on the horizon at the moment, we look forward to seeing what the team has in store for VR in the future.

Steam’s Summer Sale Includes Discounts on Half-Life: Alyx, The Walking Dead, Superhot VR & Many More

Steam Summer Sale 2020

The Steam Summer Sale has once again returned offering a deluge of discounts for gamers after a deal. For virtual reality (VR) fans, there’s no shortage of offers available whether you’re after a big AAA title like Half-Life: Alyx or one of the numerous indie videogames for less than £10 GBP.

Half-Life: Alyx

Steam’s Summer Sale runs until 9th July, in which time you can make use of hundreds of offers, plus if any of them are over £30 you’ll be able to save a further £5 with the discount applied at the checkout.

While there are way too many to mention, VRFocus has compiled a little list of the offers which most caught our eye:

Boneworks

As per usual in Steam sales, the platform likes to include an additional sales feature to encourage gamers to buy more titles through various rewards. This time its the Points Shop, so when you buy a videogame, DLC, hardware, application, soundtrack, or an in-game item you’ll earn yourself points – 124 points for every £1.00 you spend to be exact. These can then be redeemed for animated avatars, frames, backgrounds, badges and chat items. The big difference with the Points Store is that it’s permanent.

So go take a look and see what catches your eye. For all the latest VR software and hardware deals, keep reading VRFocus.

Superhot VR Goes Double Platinum With 2 Million Copies Sold Worldwide

Superhot VR: Arcade Edition

It has been a day of announcements when it comes to Oculus products and sandwiched in between it all is Superhot VR, the popular slow-mo action title. Today, the SUPERHOT Team has announced that over 2 million copies of the videogame have been sold across all platforms.

SUPERHOT VR

Originally released for Oculus Rift way back in 2016, Superhot VR added further platform support in the following years – the most recent being Oculus Quest. That saw the platinum taking almost two and a half years while this second one was achieved in half that time the team has revealed.

A first-person shooter that’s entirely in slow-mo, only when you move does everything start to speed up. So this means lots of Matrix-style bullet-dodging as you shoot enemies or grab an ashtray or bottle to fling in their red faces. It’s this simple yet addictive gameplay which makes Superhot VR so enjoyable.

“Due to the fact that we’ve sold over 2m copies of Superhot VR, we’ve come to the realisation the VR is actually very much alive, contrary to popular monthly articles,” said Callum Underwood, Director of Special Projects at SUPERHOT Team in a statement. “Across all sales platforms, we’ve managed to achieve something that not many developers manage to do in any medium, and that’s pretty meaningful to us. VR has enabled us to do all the cool stuff we do here, and is paying for the livelihoods of over 45 people to put it bluntly.”

superhot_press_screenshot_13

Superhot VR still sells incredibly well and we’re always thankful to our fans for supporting us along the way,” said Alastair Hebson, Director of Other Special Projects at SUPERHOT Team. “2020 is shaping up to be our best year yet, sales of Superhot VR are up at least 195% compared to this time last year and we couldn’t be more proud.”

Helping that success is Superhot VR being available for most headsets, from Oculus Quest and Rift to Valve Index, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR. From 21st May, Superhot VR will be on sale at all the usual VR platform stores. For further updates on the title, keep reading VRFocus.
