PlayStation VR Exclusive Dark Eclipse Gameplay Details Revealed

Sunsoft recently confirmed to VRFocus that the forthcoming PlayStation VR exclusive MOBA, Dark Eclipse, would make its western playable debut at PlayStation Experience this month. Following this, the publisher has offered some brand new details on exactly how attendees – and eventually players around the world – will play the videogame.

Dark Eclipse is a videogame designed for online play. You will need to react to other players’ tactics as there is no sure-win strategy, requiring adaptation to each situation. The pace of the videogame allows you to think strategically in terms of when to attack or defend. Two online gameplay modes will be included: Rank Mode and eSport.

Designed to be a competitive videogame, like all great MOBAs before it, Dark Eclipse will pit skilled players against others who match their skill level. Rank Mode is intended specifically for this; filtering out the weaker players to enable the stronger players to battle against one another. At launch there will be a focus on 1-vs-1 mode, but moving forward Sunsoft will add 2-vs-2, and the dynamic of the game will start to require teamwork. Eventually, the team want to incorporate 3-vs-3 matches.

“We don’t want to jump into a situation where there are not enough players in-game at any given time, and we don’t want to have people waiting for a long time for a match,” stated a representative of Sunsoft. “In short, first claim victory with your own wit, going solo and no need to worry about guild partners or leechers. Then look forward to team-vs-team gameplay in a major release after launch.

“We deeply understand the excitement of team-vs-team dynamic. Looking at MOBAs on mobile phones, it’s easy to get a list of games with 5 vs 5 players. But is that the answer for VR MOBA? We are taking steps to find out. The multiplayer online battle experience we want, doesn’t necessarily means 5 vs 5 players, especially when one player has to control three characters in game. We will keep iterating and evolve the game. Finally, there wouldn’t be eSports if there are no spectators. For that, we have been prototyping a spectator mode, and that will be released in an update after launch.”

In addition to the multiplayer gameplay modes, Dark Eclipse will also include the option to play solo, offline. There are practice mode and tutorials, as well as a mode for player vs A.I. bots. There will be rewards as players gain more experience, and once you reach the highest experience level you will be prepared to take on other live players.

One of the unique mechanics of Dark Eclipse is the ability to control three characters on the battlefield simultaneously. Originally Sunsoft experimented with having one player controlling up to five characters, however during playtesting the team found that three felt good. A range of characters are planned for the videogame, including human-like characters called the Heroes and monster-like characters called the Dominators. There are over 20 characters planned for launch.

With regards to input systems, Dark Eclipse will support both PlayStation Move and DualShock 4 controllers. A virtual hand will be present on-screen, with a trigger press used to grab objects and interact with the UI.

“When we were thinking of VR interaction in VR, the first thing that we tried was point-and-click and point-and-teleport interactions. Although that worked, we were left thinking what if the interaction can be more like real life where you just grab with your hands. I mean, in real life, if you want to move an object in front of you, you just grab it and move the object with your hand. Our locomotion also uses the position of the motion controller to move yourself in-game. Unlike VR shooting games, you do not extend your arms to aim. The game is paced so that you move casually as if you are lighting a candle slowly. You can play the game standing up or sitting down. We designed the game with rest period between matches, so you can rest your body if needed.”

Sunsoft are hoping for an enduring audience in Dark Eclipse, suggesting that over 1,000 hours of gameplay will be available due to the varied combinations of playable characters available. Each match will typically last between 10 and 30 minutes.

“We play a lot of MOBA games, the thrill of triple-kill, diving under the tower to chase a kill, ganking on an unsuspecting opponent, getting that power buff, pushing towers towards the enemy base, receiving cheers from spectators,” stated a representative of Sunsoft. “We want to bring all these game elements into VR. We like VR, and we want to have a game for people to play for hundreds of hours. Wouldn’t it be nice if we can have a MOBA+RTS game in VR where we can just play for many hours? That’s why we have Dark Eclipse, a game for gamers like us.”

Dark Eclipse will be coming to America in Spring 2018, with the first English language playable demo set to be available at PlayStation Experience 2017. VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest details on Dark Eclipse and other forthcoming VR titles from Sunsoft.

Sunsoft’s VR MOBA for PSVR ‘Dark Eclipse’ to Launch in Spring 2018

Sunsoft, the Japanese publisher and developer, today announced their multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) for PlayStation VR Dark Eclipse will be launching Spring 2018. If you’re heading to Sony’s annual PlayStation Experience next week you’ll be able to get your hands on a demo.

MOBAs are traditionally fast-paced affairs, as they rely on quick-twitch mouse clicks and a mind mindbogglingly fast ability to traverse the map. To that effect Sunsoft is trying to dial in on the right speed so players don’t get tired quickly, but also have the sort of MOBA experience they’re used to.

Sunsoft Senior Programmer Bill Hung explained a little more about the game in a PlayStation US blog post, saying that Dark Eclipse doesn’t require you to extend your arms to aim like in VR shooters, but rather tasks you with dropping the cursor like an object that your little army will follow, effectively slowing down gameplay for a more comfortable experience. According to Hung, the game is paced so that you can move “more casually” and allows a rest period between matches, so you can rest your body if needed.

The game will include tutorials, practice mode, player vs A.I. bots, and of course player vs player. There will be rewards as you gain more experience that you’ll collect regardless of solo, casual mode or rank mode.

Sunsoft says they’ll be over twenty characters available for the game at launch, including human-like characters called ‘Heroes’ and monster-like characters called ‘Dominators’.

The player will be able to take control of three characters (leaders). Sunsoft says it’s aiming to provide “around a thousand hours of gameplay,” although since it’s an online game, the gameplay could technically be endless. Matches are said to last between 10 to 30 minutes each.

Dark Eclipse will first launch with only 1v1 gameplay, but will at some point later include 2v2, and then later 3v3 matches. “We don’t want to jump into a situation where there are not enough players in-game at any given time, and we don’t want to have people waiting for a long time for a match,” says Hung.

To give it the future potential of becoming an eSport, Sunsoft is including a spectator mode, which will be released in an update after launch.

Sunsoft to Bring VR MOBA Dark Eclipse to PlayStation Experience

Sunsoft, a Japanese publisher of videogames for more than 40 years, is set to make its western virtual reality (VR) debut at the PlayStation Experience, Anaheim, later this month. The company will be bringing Dark Eclipse, a VR-exclusive MOBA which debuted at Tokyo Game Show earlier this year, to the show, playable outside of Japan for the first time.

Dark Eclipse is a MOBA videogame developed specifically for VR platforms; players are immersed in the real-time action without traditional boundary of a 2D screen. The videogame will feature a roster of 20 characters, called Leaders, from which players will choose three to take into battle as they build towers and destroy the enemy base. Developed by a team of MOBA and RTS videogame lovers, Dark Eclipse is designed to offer a new MOBA era in the VR age.

Dark Eclipse was originally confirmed for a western release back in September 2017. The videogame was showcased at the Tokyo Game Show and subsequently Sunsoft issued a tweet to VRFocus confirming that Dark Eclipse would launch in America in 2018. No specific release date has yet been mentioned, nor has there yet been any confirmation of a European release, however the publisher has since updated their target for launch as ‘Spring 2018’.

Sunsoft, an arm of Sun Electronics Corporation, was founded in 1971. Originally working with the likes of Acclaim and SEGA to port titles across various formats, Sunsoft found success in the early 90s with a portfolio of titles including Aero the Acrobat, World Heroes and various licensed titles including Batman, Looney Tunes and Gremlins across a range of arcade cabinets and home consoles. More recently the publisher has made a significant investment in Nintendo Switch, with an entry in the popular Blaster Master series and a port of Waku Waku 7.

Since then, the publisher has contacted VRFocus regarding hands-on opportunities at PlayStation Experience, set to take place in Anaheim, California, next month. VRFocus will of course keep you updated with all the latest details on Dark Eclipse and any other forthcoming VR titles from Sunsoft.

PlayStation VR MOBA Dark Eclipse Will Be Coming West

Sunsoft, the developer behind upcoming real-time strategy (RTS) and multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) title Dark Eclipse have confirmed that the title will be getting a release in the West as well as a Japanese release.

The RTS/MOBA hybrid was showcased at the Tokyo Game Show over the weekend. Dark Eclipse is set to feature a roster of over 20 colourful characters, from those, the player can choose a team of three to send into battle against enemy forces. The aim is to force enemy heroes to retire from battle, capture territory and, ultimately, destroy the enemy base.

Developer Sunsoft confirmed on Twitter that the title would indeed be getting a release in North America in 2018. An English version of the trailer was also unveiled. The Japanese version is also due for release in 2018, a firm release date and price point have yet to be confirmed.

MOBA titles such as League of Legends and Overwatch are extremely popular, but have largely yet to make the jump to virtual reality (VR), possibly due to the relatively small install base for VR hardware. RTS titles, meanwhile have seen something of a resurgence on VR platforms. Sunsoft are confident that the intuitive control scheme and RTS elements will entire users to try the VR MOBA.

Dark Eclipse MOBA Coming To PlayStation VR

Despite the popularity of the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, or MOBA, genre of videogames, for the most part they have yet to make the jump to virtual reality (VR). That may be about to change, since Sony showcased a VR MOBA called Dark Eclipse at the Tokyo Game Show.

Described as a hybrid between the Real-time strategy and MOBA genres, Dark Eclipse will allow players to choose three characters from a roster of over 20, and then set forth to battle. Users will need to get a grip on topology and terrain, keep an eye on the opponent’s strategy as they aim to capture the most territory. You win by forcing your opponent to retire his characters or by destroying their base.

Developer SunSoft says the intuitive nature of VR control schemes will change the paradigm for simulation and strategy titles. Dark Eclipse is due to be released on the PlayStation VR some time in 2018. It is not yet known if the title will be released in the West.
