Wallace & Gromit’s AR Adventure ‘The Big Fix Up’ Out Now

Wallace & Gromit - The Big Fix Up

Last year Aardman Animations and Fictioneers announced that beloved duo Wallace & Gromit would be making their way into augmented reality (AR). Today, Wallace & Gromit: The Big Fix Up has arrived for mobile devices so that players can help fix up the duo’s home town of Bristol, UK.

Wallace and Gromit: The Big Fix Up

Providing a narrative-driven experience with AR gameplay, Wallace & Gromit: The Big Fix Up is their first new adventure in a decade. The iconic characters have started a new business venture, Spick & Spanners, and you’re the company’s new employee.

Wallace & Gromit: The Big Fix Up is voiced by award-winning British actors including Miriam Margolyes and Jim Carter with Ben Whitehead playing Wallace. The AR app can be used both at home or outside to aid the pair, with in-character phone calls, extended reality (XR) portals, and comic strips all part of the experience.

“We are really excited to launch The Big Fix Up, the first release from our new Fictioneers studio. We believe it’s a first-of-its-kind experience, part of our vision to harness multiple technologies, media types and formats to tell enhanced, collaborative and immersive stories in real-time,” said Scott Ewings, Venture Lead at Potato and co-founder of Fictioneers in a statement. “With The Big Fix Up, we have created a new, rich and multi-layered experience, where, for the first time ever, YOU can become part of Wallace & Gromit’s story. This will be the first of many releases using the Fictioneers platform.”

Wallace & Gromit - The Big Fix Up

Wallace & Gromit have innovation, gadgets, and technology at the comedic heart of their world. Working with Fictioneers to create The Big Fix Up has been a perfect fit, allowing us to bring the duo’s fantastic fictional contraptions right into our audiences homes using the latest real technology,” adds Merlin Crossingham, Creative Director of Wallace & Gromit at Aardman.

Fictioneers is a collaboration between Potato, Sugar Creative and Tiny Rebel Games. The group used 3D mapping platform Fantasmo to bring Bristol’s city centre to life as well as Unity’s AR Foundation toolkit.

Wallace & Gromit: The Big Fix Up is freely available now on iOS and Android devices in the UK, US and Canada. For further updates from Fictioneers about its latest immersive content, keep reading VRFocus.

Dr. Seuss’s ABC – An Amazing AR Alphabet! Out Now on Apple Store and Google Play

Several months ago Sugar Creative Studio announced a collaboration with Dr. Seuss Enterprises to create a series of educational augmented reality (AR) apps. This week the first of those apps has now arrived with Dr. Seuss’s ABC – An Amazing AR Alphabet! now available for iOS and Android devices.

Dr. Seuss' ABC-An Amazing AR Alphabet!

While the Sandbox mode enables kids to select their favourite animated characters to create an AR world of their own.

App is an exciting way to ignite young imaginations through interactive play with the creative stories and beloved characters both kids and parents love,” Dr. Seuss Enterprises President Susan Brandt said in a statement.  “We are thrilled to launch the app just in time to commemorate the annual Dr. Seuss’s Birthday holiday.”

Dr. Seuss to Help Children Learn to Read Using AR

Whether you want to build new worlds or immerse yourself in an artist’s creative vision, augmented reality (AR) offers all sorts of possibilities when mixing the real and virtual worlds. British studio Sugar Creative has created a number of interesting AR projects such as Bydo’s Return: A Halloween Augmented Reality Gameand now the developer is working with Dr. Seuss Enterprises on several educational apps.

Dr.Seuss AR App

Dr. Seuss Enterprises has commissioned Sugar Creative to create a series of AR apps based on Dr. Seuss books in an effort to enhance the way children learn to read. The first AR app will be based on Dr. Seuss’s ABC: An Amazing Alphabet Book!, teaching kids their ABC’s in a new, engaging way.

“We’re thrilled to enter the AR space with such an interactive, enjoyable product that truly enhances how children learn,” said Susan Brandt, president of Dr. Seuss Enterprises, L.P. in a statement. “This year, we’re embracing emerging technologies to shape how children, parents and educators explore the world of Dr. Seuss in never-before-seen ways, and we’re excited to continue this momentum in 2020 with Sugar Creative!”

The Dr. Seuss ABC AR app is slated for launch in spring 2020 for both phones and tablets, with Sugar Creative developing more in the coming years. “The potential for AR and VR to support learning is enormous; we’re only just scratching the surface of how these meaningful applications are changing the game for how children learn,” said Jason Veal, managing director, Sugar Creative. “To help a child learn their ABCs from this classic Dr. Seuss book in such an interactive way will be an incredibly proud moment for us.”

Dr.Seuss AR App

Augmented reality has come on leaps and bounds in the past year or so, from entry-level phone-based consumer content to expensive high-end kit designed for enterprise use cases. Videogames like Minecraft Earth and Five Night’s at Freddy’s AR: Special Delivery offer new gaming experiences while developers can now access innovative devices like the Litho controller or Varjo’s XR-1 Developer Edition headset for almost $10,000 USD.

As further details are released on these Dr. Seuss AR apps from Sugar Creative, VRFocus will keep you updated.

Meet an AR Ghost Dog in Bydo’s Return

Sugar Creative Studio has today launched a new augmented reality (AR) videogame designed to give you the Halloween chills. Bydo’s Return: A Halloween Augmented Reality Game has been built using Google’s ARCore, and is available to download now.

Bydo's Return screenshot

Bydo’s Return: A Halloween Augmented Reality Game offers players the opportunity to play with Bydo, your ghostly AR companion. Place the vessel in a well lit room then dim the lights to make him appear, and interact with him as he affectionately demands some playtime.

“It was an experiment we made in 10 days and it was a lot of fun to make,” stated Faye Allen, Lead Augmented Reality and Game Developer at Sugar Creative Studio. “You play with a virtual ghost dog who can fetch in AR and can only be summoned within dim light; we did this to experiment with the new ARcore light estimation tech.”

Easily comparable to the likes of Nintendogs and Kinectimals, Sugar Creative Studio’s Bydo’s Return: A Halloween Augmented Reality Game has the advantage of making use of modern technology. The AR element of the videogame results in a unique pet simulation experience unlike any of the AAA titles that have obviously influenced the team at Sugar Creative Studio.

Sugar Creative Studio was established in 2009 as a digital media and creative branding agency. Based in Cardiff, the team has worked with clients such as the British Academy Cymru Awards, Cadw, the historic environment service of the Welsh Government, and Bobatoo.

“Staying on top of new technologies is a vital part of planning to make best use of them. Sugar [Creative Studio] are proud to lead the Cardiff Design scene as experts in cutting edge tech,” states the official Sugar Creative Studio website. “At the moment we’re loving experimenting with markerless AR. The opportunities presented by markerless AR are enormous, from educational activities to ground breaking marking guaranteed to grab social media buzz.”

Bydo’s Return: A Halloween Augmented Reality Game is available to download from the Google Play store now, and requires Google ARCore Preview to be installed on a compatible Android device. ARCore Preview is experimental software not supported by all devices. An official trailer for Bydo’s Return: A Halloween Augmented Reality Game follows below and VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest AR titles from Sugar Creative Studio.
