50 Creatives to Help Build UK-Wide XR Storytelling Project

The UK has a strong history in the XR space, with several new projects appearing at SXSW this week. Today, StoryFutures Academy in collaboration with several other organisations has announced plans to deliver an immersive storytelling experience called StoryTrails. Created by 50 artists, it’ll appear across various UK cities later this year.

nexus AR Mobile

As part of UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK – an initiative celebrating the country’s creativity – StoryTrails will use augmented (AR) and virtual reality (VR) in a bid to bring intriguing stories from the past to life. 15 public spaces will be reanimated thanks to the work of 50 creatives, the BFI (British Film Institute), the BBC, Niantic Labs, Nexus Studios, and ISO Design.

Those 50 roles will be split down into several projects, with 17 making story trails for city centres whilst another 15 will build immersive installations mapping the geography of a location. Nine will be selected to develop VR experiences whilst nine will take on professional placement at one of the StoryTrails partner organisations. The BFI, for example, will provide unprecedented access to archive material.

“StoryTrails will help to shape the future of the creative industries and pioneer creative storytelling in the 3D internet. This moment, when emerging technologies are finding their form is the same moment the UK’s next generation of creative practitioners are emerging. StoryTrails represents a direct engagement with changing the face of the industry to reflect the diversity of talent across the UK and to use that talent to make the UK a world leader in immersive storytelling,” said Professor David Olusoga, broadcaster and film-maker and Executive Producer of StoryTrails in a statement. “As the UK’s largest immersive storytelling project, StoryTrails will be mapping a course for this amazing set of new technologies that engrains diversity at its heart.”

Lewisham - StoryTrails

“StoryTrails is a wonderful project being developed for UNBOXED, which uses cutting edge immersive technologies to tell new stories about people and places across the UK,” adds Martin Green CBE, Chief Creative Officer UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK. “It’s brilliant that StoryFutures Academy are also recruiting and training 50 creatives from diverse backgrounds to help shape it and expand their skills in immersive technology. In doing so, they are playing a vital role in building a dynamic future workforce for the creative industries in the UK.”

The 15 locations offering free two-day StoryTrails residencies are:

  • Omagh
  • Dundee
  • Dumfries
  • Blackpool
  • Bradford
  • Sheffield
  • Lincoln
  • Wolverhampton
  • Swansea
  • Newport

  • London (Lambeth and Lewisham).

If you happen to be in the UK this summer StoryTrails runs from 1st July – 18th September 2022, culminating in a new film to be screened in cinemas as well as being made available via BBC iPlayer. For further updates, keep reading gmw3.

Duality Wins StoryFutures Academy and InGAME’s £50k Immersive Game Lab

Duality

Last year StoryFutures Academy and InGAME held the Immersive Game Lab, an initiative to support the next generation of immersive, narrative-led videogames by aiding both writers and developers. Today, the winning project has been announced, a virtual reality (VR) title called Duality.

InGame

Duality is a collaborative effort between Cecile Emeke, an artist and filmmaker from London, and Biome Collective, a digital art and videogame studio based in Dundee. The project is: “set in the world of a young British black woman who discovers her everyday actions begin to affect a timeline that spans across time and space,” explains the synopsis.

“This collaboration is a fantastic opportunity for Biome Collective to push the medium of games by focusing on narrative and the voice of the unrepresented. Our audience is global and diverse and we need to reflect this through our games,” said Malath Abbas from Biome Collective in a statement.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to further expand my practice of storytelling into VR/AR and explore the potentialities of these mediums,” said Emeke.

Winning the Immersive Game Lab means the creators receive a £50,000 GBP commission. This goes towards a 12-week development period alongside user testing, audience insight and commercialisation support from InGAME to bring the idea to life. Duality will then be showcased at a UK videogame event, although when that will take place is still uncertain.

“As we hoped it would, the Immersive Game Lab & Commission has unearthed some brilliant talent and fantastic new collaborations, and Cecile and Biome’s project is a great example of this. With a unique take on what an immersive game might be – and on the audiences they are built for – we can’t wait to see this virtual project become reality,” added Becky Gregory-Clarke, Head of Immersive, StoryFutures Academy.

There were two runner-ups from the Immersive Game Lab, Kaya Could Fly, a VR exploration title by Zoe Thorogood who teamed up with Pocket Sized Hands. And AR-audio narrative puzzle The Maze by Adam Butcher who was also paired with Biome Collective.

As more initiatives like the Immersive Game Lab continue to support the UK’s XR industry, VRFocus will keep you updated.

CreativeXR Opens Applications for Third Accelerator Programme

Digital Catapult and Arts Council England launched CreativeXR back in 2018 to provide funds, tools and other assistance for those working on virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) projects. The programme has proven to be a success, returning for the third year with new contributors.

For 2020 CreativeXR has been awarded an Epic Megagrant by Epic Games which will be used to support up to five projects built using Epic’s Unreal Engine. The second new contributor is StoryFutures Academy which will mentor up to four companies in story development, design and continuing narrative.

“Now in its third year, we’re excited by the worldwide acclaim CreativeXR projects are attaining globally. Our brilliant partnership with Arts Council England continues to allow us to help 20 production companies a year take risks to uncover new ways of telling stories and try out new commercial models,” said Jeremy Silver, CEO, Digital Catapult in a statement. “This year we’re delighted to partner with Epic Games and StoryFutures Academy; together we are paving the way to develop the new immersive formats of the future, making the UK the best place in the world to produce creative immersive content.”

Applications have now opened for companies and teams interested in taking part, the deadline for applications being 17th April 2020. Having helped 40 teams receive funding to develop prototypes over the last two years CreativeXR has become a pivotal accelerator programme offering access to workshops and peer-to-peer learning, whilst also hosting an annual Showcase and Market event attended by global companies such as HTC Vive, Oculus, Bose and Intel for teams to pitch their work.

“We’re delighted to be partnering with CreativeXR for the second consecutive year, this time as the Storytelling Partner. As the UK’s National Centre for Immersive Storytelling, we are aligned with the vision of CreativeXR, and believe that great stories are fundamental to the success of the next wave of immersive experiences,” said Rebecca Gregory-Clarke, Head of Immersive, StoryFutures Academy: the National Centre for Immersive Storytelling.

As in previous years once 20 projects have been selected to take part in the CreativeXR programme VRFocus will let you know who made the cut.

Maze Theory to Train Writers in VR, Offering Peaky Blinders VR Work Opportunity

London, UK-based virtual reality (VR) studio Maze Theory has a couple of big-name projects in the works including Doctor Who: Edge of Time and Peaky Blinders VRThe latter is still in its early stages and so the team has announced a partnership with  StoryFutures Academy, the National Centre for Immersive Storytelling jointly run by the National Film and Television School (NFTS) and Royal Holloway, University of London, to train writers in the art of writing for VR, with one being selected to help pen the upcoming Peaky Blinders VR experience.

Five participants have been chosen to take part in a two-day writers’ room this past week: Jenna Jovi; Melissa Iqbal; Berri George; Robin Taylor and Catherine Skinner; who all have at least two screen credits or a commissioned script to their name.

Adam Ganz, StoryFutures Academy’s Head of Writers Room led the endeavour, supported by Maze Theory and immersive theatre company, Punchdrunk. Participants learnt the principles of writing for VR as well as seeing Maze Theory’s proprietary AI technology that will make Peaky Blinders VR a unique experience, allowing the characters to respond to player gestures,  movement, voice, sound and body language.

“We are delighted to be working with Maze Theory to help established writers discover the art of writing for VR,” said Ganz in a statement. “Maze Theory are an incredibly innovative company who are really pushing the boundaries of what is possible in immersive and it’s fantastic that they are offering one of our writers’ room participants the opportunity to work on their new Peaky Blinders VR experience. These kinds of collaborations that bring together established film and television industry professionals with VR specialists are vital for the growth of the immersive sector. We need to tell stories together.”

Peaky Blinders

One of the participants will then be able to take the writers room a stage further and given the opportunity to work on the  Peaky Blinders VR experience for up to 10 weeks over the coming months.

Peaky Blinders VR is scheduled for release in 2020. When further details are released VRFocus will let you know.
