Brand New Half-Life Alyx: Levitation Trailer Appears on the PC Gaming Show

During the week that’s definitely not E3 there have been a number of companies sticking to tradition, hosting events with lots of new videogames to announce. Amongst them was the PC Gaming Show yesterday which just so happened to have a tasty virtual reality (VR) update, a brand new gameplay trailer for Half-Life: Alyx mod Levitation.

Half-Life: Alyx - Levitation

The work of modders FMPONE and Corey Laddo – and a few others behind the scenes – Levitation has been gaining plenty of attention ever since it was unveiled earlier this year. While we’d all love an official update from Valve, thanks to the Steam Workshop Half-Life: Alyx is highly moddable with dozens of excellent community additions, and Levitation is gearing up to be one of the best.

Half-Life Alyx: Levitation is going to be a 4-5 hour adventure in City17, set in an area called Sector X which houses a mysterious floating building. G-Man is set to make a return alongside your mate and inventive engineer Russell. Even with the new trailer, little else has been revealed regarding the narrative. At least it’ll serve as a nice (unofficial) side-mission for fans eager for more Half-Life in VR.

From the looks of the gameplay trailer Half-Life Alyx: Levitation is going to be heavily action-oriented, once again pitting Alyx against Combine soldiers and the ever-reliable headcrabs.

Half-Life: Alyx - Levitation

Two years after its release Half-Life: Alyx is still regarded as the pinnacle of VR gaming, offering just the right mix of action, immersive interaction and puzzling that the franchise is known for. “A stunningly rich experience from start to finish, Half-Life: Alyx is one of the best VR titles available, a perfect showcase for what VR gaming is capable of,” gmw3 said in its review.

Currently, Half-Life Alyx: Levitation is expected to arrive later this year. While you’re waiting other Half-Life: Alyx mods include Return to Rapture, a two-episode addition set within the Bioshock universe. Or how about VR mods for non-VR titles? Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077, Quake 3 Arena, Resident Evil 2 and 3, and more have all been given the unofficial VR mod treatment.

Stunning Half-Life Alyx mod “LEVITATION” Arrives Q3 2022

2020’s Half-Life: Alyx was a seminal moment for virtual reality (VR), Valve not only finally adding to the much-loved sci-fi franchise but also giving creators the chance to build upon it with Steam Workshop. As if you need a reason to step back into City 17, later this year a stunning looking mod is due to arrive with a big campaign, Half-Life Alyx: LEVITATION.

Half-Life: Alyx - Levitation

The first details for Half-Life Alyx: LEVITATION were released over the weekend by way of a very slick trailer, promising a “4-5 hour experience for the average player.” In it, you’ll continue your role of Alyx Vance, fighting through the dangerous streets of City 17 on a new mission to an area called Sector X.

Two of Alyx’s colleagues Barry and Maya went to investigate a mysterious levitating building, and well, haven’t come back. So you need to find out what happened and it seems as though the shadowy G-Man will be making an appearance whilst your buddy Russel also makes a return.

Other than that not much else is known but expect the usual action-packed gameplay with plenty of Combine and Headcrabs to work your way through. This being a Steam Workshop mod, Half-Life Alyx: LEVITATION will be free when it launches later this year, currently scheduled for Q3 2022.

Half-Life: Alyx - Levitation

There are a ton of mods for Half-Life: Alyx, some, like Levitation, stick with the Half-Life theme and expand the gameplay further. Others move completely away from the Half-Life setting, drawing inspiration from other videogames. Some of the most notable include a Bioshock mod in two chapters, Return to Rapture, which has been well received by the community, and Gunman Contracts where you become a trained assassin taking on a new contract.

Take a look at the trailer below and see what you think, as Half-Life Alyx: LEVITATION is free it’ll certainly be worth a download when it arrives. Don’t forget that you do need to own a copy of Half-Life: Alyx in the first place before you can. For more VR mod updates, keep reading gmw3.

Half-Life: Alyx Mod Transforms Gravity Gloves Into Amazing Weapons

Last week a new Half-Life: Alyx mod hit the Steam Workshop called Glorious Gloves that transforms the base Gravity Gloves into amazingly powerful weapons more similar to having two Gravity Guns embedded in the palms of your hands.

To be honest, this is probably closer to what most people had in mind when they first found out there would be Gravity Gloves in a Half-Life VR game. It seems like a more natural evolution of the Gravity Gun concept than the boiled down interpretation we actually got in Half-Life: Alyx. It’s still an incredible game, but these gloves just feel more badass. According to the mod’s creator you could finish about 90% of the game using only these new gloves as your weapons and nothing else.

According to the Glorious Gloves mod page on Steam, the features specifically are Levitation, Punting, and Improved Grabbity. Levitation works how you’d think by closing your hand to “grab” something from a distance, except now it can be used from a much further distance and on basically any physics object in the game.

Then if you punch that closed fist forward/away from you, it sends it flying with force — aka Punting. You can even do this on objects you’re not levitating as a sort of shockwave of energy, kind of like air punching. Plus, tethering and pulling objects towards you, aka using Grabbity, works from a further distance and on more objects as well.

You can see some gameplay of this Half-Life: Alyx mod in action at the top of this post and the trailer created by the mod’s author directly above this paragraph. Let us know what you think down in the comments below!

Explore Aperture Laboratories From Portal In VR Using Half-Life: Alyx Steam Workshop Mod

Now that Half-Life: Alyx has Steam Workshop support, one modder has managed to bring an entire map from Portal 2 over into Half-Life: Alyx, allowing you to explore a small slice of Aperture Laboratories and pick up the Portal gun.

Official Half-Life: Alyx modding support launched last week, and we’re already seeing some awesome content on the Steam Workshop as a result. While a lot of the best content available on there at the moment is stuff that’s been ported over from the unofficial tools that were previously available, we’re also starting to see some new things trickle through, like the lightsaber mod and this Portal map.

The mod — titled ‘Portal 2 – Speed Ramp’ ports over the entire sp_a3_speed_ramp map from Valve’s 2011 title into VR. However, don’t get too excited — you can’t properly play through the map or shoot any portals. The most you can do is walk around and pick up a few items, including the titular gun.

You can check it out in the video above, but it doesn’t quite do the experience justice. There’s something to be said for the immersion that comes with walking through Aperture Laboratories in virtual reality. For one, the companion cubes are absolutely huge when viewed to scale — much larger than expected, especially compared to your body. The moment where you discover the Portal gun sitting near a portrait of Cave Johnson is also very exciting. Even though the gun isn’t usable in any way other than a prop, it’s awesome to be able to pull it towards you with Alyx’s gravity gloves.

To try out the map for yourself, head over to the Steam Workshop page and check out our guide for installing and playing Half-Life: Alyx mods and maps.

Half-Life: Alyx now Supports Steam Workshop for Community Mod Making

Half-Life: Alyx Workshop Tools

Valve released Half-Life: Alyx at the end of March to universal acclaim, making it the biggest – and most widely recognised – virtual reality (VR) title of 2020. Known for its community mod support, Valve has now updated the videogame to include Steam Workshop support.

Half-Life: Alyx

Available as a beta release, support allows anyone access to Half-Life: Alyx’s level editing tools. Fans can create new levels, models and animations or browse and play content the community has built.

In the past, the active Half-Life community has built all sorts of content for the previous versions, and Half-Life: Alyx is likely to be no different. Add-on’s already available include Crash Course a short campaign.

This beta release of tools new or updated versions of:

  • Hammer, the latest version of the Source 2 level editor.
  • Material Editor, the tool for creating and tuning materials in Source 2.
  • ModelDoc, a tool for viewing, editing, and compiling models with animation, collision, and other gameplay attributes.
  • AnimGraph, our animation tool used to create complicated animation setups with blends and transitions.
  • Particle Editor, for making new particle effects.
  • Subrect Editor, for creating smart texture sheets known as “hotspots.”
  • Source Filmmaker, the Source 2 cinematic renderer and animation tool.

These will all be added to and improved upon in the near future. Several sample maps have also been included: “We’ve included these to demonstrate and explain how we authored enemy encounters in the game, as well as showcase some new features of the Half-Life: Alyx level art pipeline including tile meshes, static and dynamic cables, and texture hotspotting,” says Valve.

Half-Life: Alyx

For those new to modding Valve has begun creating  Half-Life: Alyx Workshop Tools documentation as a good starting resource. This is also still ongoing, so some tools may not have fully complete documentation yet.

VRFocus reviewed Half-Life: Alyx giving the title a full five-star rating, saying: “A stunningly rich experience from start to finish, Half-Life: Alyx is one of the best VR titles available, a perfect showcase for what VR gaming is capable of. It doesn’t exactly break new ground, instead providing familiar Half-Life gameplay all wrapped up in a highly polished VR gift bag.” For further Half-Life: Alyx updates, keep reading VRFocus.

Pavlov VR: Fans integrieren ikonische GoldenEye 007-Map
