PSVR Shooter ‘StarBlood Arena’ Goes Dark Forever Starting July 25th

WhiteMoon Dreams, the developers behind PSVR arena shooter StarBlood Arena (2017), released a statement recently bidding farewell to its community. Earlier this year, the studio announced that their online-only game would be going dark; the official date for server shutdown is Thursday, July 25th.

A studio spokesperson took to Reddit late last week to offer a final goodbye and to assemble the game’s ultimate ‘Wednesday Night Wars’, a weekly call to the game’s playerbase to meet up and populate the servers every Wednesday.

Here’s an excerpt from what will likely be the studio’s last StarBlood Arena communiqué:

Of course this farewell hurts, but there’s some solace we can take in knowing that we’ve made so many friends – as have our players. I’m talking about lifelong bonds that you can’t quantify with sales figures or DAU analytics. I’ve received text messages with photos of SBA players meeting up in real life and heard stories of our players banding together during tough personal tragedies in life. Hell, I even had the entire community comfort me when I lost my dog and my favorite aunt in the same day, which for the record sucks and 10/10 would not play again. Point being, it’s very sad that we are sun setting, BUT the love in our hearts for each other and this game can’t ever be taken from us. Hey I feel kinda like I’m giving a Braveheart speech here.

Anyway, next Wednesday, please go fucking CRAZY. Play as much as you can, this is the final WnW. The flier says it starts at 6pm PST, but that’s more to pay homage to the tradition of the usual start time of the event – so play as much as you can before we go to bed. The event ends when the servers go down because the party don’t stop and such.

Before the game’s total shutdown, the studio had proposed the idea to the game’s publisher Sony of possibly including an offline mode that would populate the game with bots, however the same spokesperson says that the decision ultimately was rejected.

“Trust me, that’s what we’ve been fighting for, I get where you’re coming from,” the spokesperson said, answering a community question about the possibility of an offline mode.

StarBlood Arena first launched in April 2017 to a decidedly less than energetic reception. Like many online-only VR games, it struggled to gain the critical mass of players, which invariably led to a vicious cycle of low engagement levels and poor hourly user counts.

Before StarBlood Arena, WhiteMoon Dreams partnered with Private Press Interactive to launch a successful Kickstarter campaign to help fund non-VR title Warmachine: Tactics (2014), which garnered the studios over $1.5 million in backer funds. Most recently the studio released Super Life of Pixel (2018), a retro side-scroller for console and PC.

Although WhiteMoon hasn’t released any specific further plans to work in VR, the studio concluded the statement above by saying “Goodnight my sweet starbabies. We’ll be back.”

PSA: PSVR Exclusive Starblood Arena Shuts Down Thursday

Consider this a PSA: you have only a few hours left to play PSVR exclusive shooter, Starblood Arena, online.

Developer WhiteMoon Studios confirmed its six degrees of freedom (6DOF) dogfighting game would be shutting down back in January. Sony would be taking servers offline on July 25th. Studio had hoped that it might be able to save the game in some form by then, but it looks like that hasn’t happened.

starblood arena shutdown

To wind down the game, WhiteMoon is hosting one final Wednesday Night Wars session on July 24.

“Of course this farewell hurts, but there’s some solace we can take in knowing that we’ve made so many friends – as have have our players,” the developer wrote on Reddit. “I’m talking about lifelong bonds that you can’t quantify with sales figures or DAU analytics.”

Starblood Arena first launched in early 2017. It pitted players in multiplayer battles with flying craft. You’d pick one of several unique characters, each with their own play style, and try to take enemies down in complex maps. We thought it was a fun, if unspectacular multiplayer offering.

“Starblood Arena isn’t a profound expression of the power of VR, but it’s hard not to appreciate a rock solid shooter that will provide hours of multiplayer battles for those willing to put the time in,” we said in our review. “Ultimately it’s a little too niche to become the definitive multiplayer PSVR game, and the struggles to get into matches aren’t going to please people that threw down $39.99 to play it. But if you’ve got the patience the game will regularly ask of you, you won’t come away disappointed.”

As for what WhiteMoon is up to next, we don’t yet know. Hopefully it’s staying with VR, though.

Starblood Arena Dev On Server Shutdown: ‘We Loved This Game Deeply’

Starblood Arena Dev On Server Shutdown: ‘We Loved This Game Deeply’

Eariler this week we reported that PSVR multiplayer shooter Starblood Arena is shutting down. Now developer WhiteMoon Dreams has spoken up with a bittersweet goodbye.

Studio CEO Jay Koottarappallil took to the PSVR subreddit to talk about the game’s closure. “People, we loved this game so deeply,” he wrote, “it became a large part of the studio’s identity and though we work on other things today, the roots of SBA run deep, making this time even harder.”

Starblood was an enjoyable six degrees of freedom (6DOF) VR shooter that launched in 2017. It had some good ideas on how to build a VR shooter, but struggled to find a robust audience. That’s a common theme with VR games. Sony will take the servers offline in July. Koottarappallil revealed that the decision to shut servers down came from Sony itself, and WhiteMoon isn’t being given the chance to save it.

“Sony called earlier to let me know that they were shutting down servers,” he wrote. “The call was something along the lines of “This is always a very hard time, but its time to shut down the servers”. There wasn’t a whole lot of detail past that and there was no option for us to support servers ourselves, much less make any new releases. At the very least, we would have liked to have the option to pay for servers ourselves.”

However, Koottarappallil emphasized that he didn’t want the blame to be leveled at Sony. The post even cites a lot of figures at Sony that helped get the game made.

“As for you, well, I can’t thank all of you enough for how you guys carried SBA from launch,” he wrote, addressing the community. “We launched in April 2017 with zero marketing and PR support, much to our disappointment, but you guys rallied.”

WhiteMoon itself isn’t facing closure, though. Koottarappallil confirmed as much in an email to UploadVR and the post says the studio is working on new projects. Starblood Arena may be over, but hopefully WhiteMoon will continue its work in VR.

PSVR Exclusive ‘StarBlood Arena’ to Go Offline in 6 Months

If you’re a fan of StarBlood Arena (2017), the online dogfighting arena exclusive to PSVR, you’re in for some bad news. Sony has decided to put an official expiration date on the title: July 25th, 2019.

Sony released word via the StarBlood Arena info page:

Please Note: Multiplayer and all online features for this product will be terminated and will no longer be available on 07/25/19. As you have to be online to play this title, this game will not be playable starting 07/25/19.

The game’s store page has since been taken down, meaning new users won’t be able to purchase the game for its latest price of $15. Considering it only has six months left to live, that’s probably the right move by Sony, the publishers of the game.

Developed by Pasadena-based WhiteMoon Dreams, StarBlood Arena first launched in April 2017 to a fairly mediocre critical reception. Like many online-only VR games, it suffered the same fate as other before and after it—a vicious cycle of low engagement levels leading to poor hourly user counts.

PSVR Exclusive Shooter Starblood Arena Goes Offline In July

PSVR Exclusive Shooter Starblood Arena Goes Offline In July

Sad news for WhiteMoon Dreams’ PSVR exclusive shooter, Starblood Arena; it’s shutting down soon.

A note on the game’s official PlayStation page confirms the news. Sony is taking multiplayer offline on 25th July 2019. Starblood launched in early 2017 so its reign has been short-lived. The game is pretty much an online-only title, so it’ll effectively cease to exist. We’ve reached out to WhiteMoon for comment on the news.

This is sad, if perhaps unsurprising news. Starblood was a six degree of freedom (6DOF) shooter. You jumped into the cockpit of a customized death machine and battled it out with others in arena-style matches. We quite enjoyed it for its box-ticking fun but, even in our review, we found difficulty getting into matches.

“Starblood Arena isn’t a profound expression of the power of VR, but it’s hard not to appreciate a rock solid shooter that will provide hours of multiplayer battles for those willing to put the time in,” we said in our review. “Ultimately it’s a little too niche to become the definitive multiplayer PSVR game, and the struggles to get into matches aren’t going to please people that threw down $39.99 to play it.”

The game was one of the first PSVR titles to be made free for PS Plus members last January, but it doesn’t seem to have helped much.

Starblood Arena isn’t the first PSVR online casualty. Shortly after the headset’s launch in 2016 Sony shut down its Cambridge Studio, which made RIGS: Mechanized Combat League. The game is still playable but future DLC was scrapped and it’s been left to much the same fate. Such are the risks of multiplayer development in the fledgling VR market, no?

StarBlood Arena Is Your Free PS+ Game For January 2018

StarBlood Arena Is Your Free PS+ Game For January 2018

The first free PlayStation VR (PSVR) game of the year for PlayStation Plus subscribers is StarBlood Arena from Whitemoon Dreams, a 6DOF flying mech shooter game that released earlier this year. When we reviewed it we found a lot to love in the core mechanics and premise, but a lack of players and launch stability issues severely hindered its original release. Hopefully its PS+ inclusion will be the shot in the arm the game needs to get a much-needed second breath of life.

StarBlood Arena will be available to download for free to all PS+ subscribers starting this coming Tuesday, January 2nd, 2018.

PlayStation Plus hasn’t delivered the same level of quality titles in its free offerings as of late when compared to when the program first debuted on PS3, but hopefully that will change as the PS4 catalog continues to expand. Only a handful of PSVR games have been offered as part of the program thus far, but they seem to be included with much more frequency lately.

For those unaware, PS+ is a subscription service, much like Xbox Live Gold, in which users pay a monthly or yearly fee to gain access to premium features like online multiplayer, cloud storage, and a monthly allocation of free games for PS3, PS Vita, PS4, and now recently, PSVR. As long as you subscribe to PS+ you have access to any and all games that you’ve redeemed as part of the program.

Now that there are are 100 PSVR games on the market, what are some of the other titles you’d like to see offered up in future months? Let us know down in the comments below!

PlayStation VR owners will get a chance to hop into the fast-paced StarBlood Arena for free next month, a battle arena shooter from WhiteMoon Dreams and Sony’s San Diego Studio.

As a multiplayer online game, it already required a PS Plus membership to function. If you happen to already have a membership, next month will be a great time to see if the fast-paced shooterbuilt for 2-8 players is right for you.

Can’t wait? Sony’s latest VR demo disc is now available for free, which features a demo of StarBlood Arena among many other released and upcoming titles. Check out the PSN store listing for the demo disc here.

We haven’t had a chance to pop in, but PlayStation Lifestyle rates it at a solid [90/100], comparing it mainly to Overwatch in speed and gameplay style. Some scores are less forgiving, with its MetaCritic score receiving an aggregate [68/100].

EVE: Valkyrie by CCP Games

CCP Games might be packing up the big top as far as their involvement in VR is concerned but that doesn’t stop EVE: Valkyire continuing to be one of the best VR experiences out there, and now VR and non-VR players can enjoy dogfighting in spaceships together.

Fantastic Contraption by Radial Games

Another title commonly amongst those VRFocus recommends: “Easy to begin with, Fantastic Contraption lets you get accustomed to the intricacies of what does what before throwing the real challenges at you. And there’s a lot, the title features 50 levels to get your head around.”

Job Simulator by Owlchemy Labs

A multi-award winning videogame, Job Simulator was so good Google brought developers Owlchemy Labs into the company. The title continues to get development and content as well, with the recently revealed ‘Infinite Overtime’ update.

Raw Data by Survios

A highly popular virtual reality (VR) shooter, Raw Data sees players equipped with both firearms and a katana, and have the simple object of taking out the enemies before they themselves are overcome.

One of a crop of PlayStation VR titles to receive a share of the spotlight recently during Sony’s press event at Paris Games Week, which included the reveal of a brand new trailer. Star Child is takes place on an alien world full of fantastical Martian creatures and creations in a homage to platformers of the 90s while also being something entirely new.

The Persistence by Firesprite

Originally revealed back in March this year, The Persistance comes from the developers behind The Playroom VR. Awaking from cryosleep, it’s up the players to kill the undead and take back control of the ship before it plunges into a nearby black hole.

The Persistence screenshotThumper by Drool

The self-described “rhythm violence” videogame was announced in March last year and by the time it hit the show floor at 2016’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) it had already made an impact. Drool said in their announcement that Thumper was “unlike anything you’ve seen, played or heard – a cocktail of kinetic action and aggressive acoustics. It’s the kind of game that inhales you, spits you out and leaves you yearning for more.” And they certainly aren’t exaggerating.

Tiny Trax by FuturLab

Slot car racing get a new twist. Tiny Trax features a drifting/boost-recharge mechanic, alongside lane switching and epic jumps across twelve tracks that’ll take players to tropical islands, volcanoes, ice caves and outer-space. It’s developer, Brighton-based studio FuturLab, recently revealed a new PlayStation VR title in Mini-Mech Mayhem.

The PlayStation VR Demo Disc 2 is now available on the PlayStation Store, it requires 15.2GB of space and several titles within it – Raw Data, Rez Infinite, Job Simulator, Dino Frontier and Fantastic Contraption – do require PS Move Controllers in order to play them.

VRFocus will bring you more details on developments with the PlayStation VR very soon.

Get A Ten Title Bundle of PlayStation VR Exclusives On The PlayStation Store For Under $120

It’s a good time of the year to be picking up videogames at a discount, and thankfully that includes those that are for virtual reality (VR) headsets. If you are a PlayStation 4 owner however you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re not getting as many opportunities to save cash as owners of the PC based head mountned displays (HMDs), specifically the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

Luckily there is indeed a very good value deal happening on the PlayStation Store at present for PlayStation VR owners. The bundle, first spied by TheNerdMag, is called the Worldwide Studios Selected PS VR Titles Mega Pack and features ten PlayStation VR titles on sale, all of which are PlayStation VR exlusives.

There is however one slight snag – it appears that it is only in Malaysia where the bundle is being sold. Of the course the setting up of an account of a different region is a familiar task for many PlayStation 4 owners and for those without the knowledge there are plenty of guides out there explaining how to make it happen.  Additionally the pack contains language support for English, Chinese and Korean.

The price works out to be 480 Malaysian Ringgits (MYR), the equivilent of approximately £88 (GBP), €100 (EUR), or $116 (USD). The ten PlayStation VR titles are below, with extracts from VRFocus‘ previous previews, reviews and stories regarding each where applicable:

BOUND: Shattered Kingdom

“Bound casts the player as an ever-moving character in an aesthetically unique world, similar in intent to the GameCube’s P.N.03 but very different in resulting gameplay. The dancer that represents the player on-screen will use a variety of leaps and twirls to overcome the pitfalls of a chaotic level design, crossing bridges, bounding across gaps and solving switch puzzles all while visually impacting the world. The latter is an impressive visual treat in VR, but it’s actually the puzzling gameplay that makes Bound worthy of the transition to the new medium.”

DRIVECLUB VR

DriveclubVR image 2“While still insisting that the PlayStation VR version of Driveclub is still a technical demonstration and nothing more, the experience feels as though a lot of work has gone into getting it just right. The handling is tight and responsive, the car feels weighty and collisions are given just enough oomph that they’ll interrupt your driving line but fall short of sending you spinning. It’s a very different way of playing Driveclub, and it arguably is what Evolution Studios’ racing experience needed to separate it from the pack all along.”

Farpoint

Farpoint screenshotFarpoint has become a key example for the success of modern VR, having surpassed all expectations for commercial value upon release.”

Here They Lie

Here They Lie_2

Here They Lie is a surreal, psychological horror that put players in a nightmarish world that doesn’t go for jump scares, rather a slower more methodical build up of fear and dread. The Tangentlemen achieve this not only through the visual art style, but also with spatial audio and lighting to increase the suspense.”

PlayStation VR Worlds

Every early adopter of the head-mounted display (HMD) should consider a purchase of PlayStation VR Worlds. A selection of mini-games both family friendly and more maturely themedPlayStation VR Worlds offers a taste of the potential of VR without daunting newcomers with the possibility of a ten hour experience; or even just an hour, for that matter. Once that initial boundary has fallen what else can PlayStation VR offer to get the party swinging?”

RIGS Mechanized Combat League

“Depicting a new form of sports entertainment that takes place 50 years in the future, RIGS: Mechanised Combat League aims to be a fast-paced FPS, the kind that might have required a few nearby sick bags on lesser VR hardware. ”

Star Strike Ultra VR

StarBlood Arena

StarBlood Arena new screenshotStarblood Arena, the unique arena shooter that sees players piloting individualised space ships all with their own unique weapons and attributes, such as soldier Elsa in her versatile ship Mandible, or fast but fragile assassin Blade and his ship Raptor. ”

Tumble VR

tumble_content“A first-person test of mental and physical dexterity as players complete a series of tasks to solve increasingly challenging puzzles. These challenges can range from building towers to creating bridges, working out mind melting puzzles, and blowing up enormous towers of blocks. Puzzle titles tend to be single-player affairs but Supermassive Games has incorporated PlayStation VR’s Social Screen feature, allowing a second player to use the connected TV, creating a much more social experience.”

Until Dawn: Rush of Blood

Until Dawn is a story driven horror videogame, with the player’s in-game decisions having a direct influence on the outcome for each of the characters involved. A convoluted journey through an unwelcoming world. Until Dawn: Rush of Blood is a far more straight forward affair. It’s a shooting gallery, pure and simple, but when played in VR it’s far more appealing than could it could ever sound on paper.”

VRFocus will bring you more news on VR bundles and offers throughout the week to come, and as we end Friday be sure to look out for this week’s edition of ‘Something For The Weekend’ hitting this Sunday.
