Porgs Come To Mixed Reality In ILMxLAB Experiment

The strange, fluffy bird-like creatures called Porgs first seen in Star Wars: The Last Jedi were embraced by internet, promptly becoming the subject of endless jokes and memes, not a bad result for a CGI creature created to cover up how many puffins were on the shooting location. Now the porgs are back, this time in mixed reality (MR) thanks to an immersive experiment from ILMxLAB.

Project Porg is somewhat like a virtual pet simulator, where players need to gain the trust and affection of the porgs by offering them treats and playing with them.

Instructions on the care and feeding of Porgs are provided by the ever-helpful and fussy protocol droid C-3PO. Players will be able to teach the virtual Porgs how to manoeuvre around real-world environments and perhaps even teach them tricks.

The MR experience is planned to debut at the Magic Leap LEAP conference, which is taking place from 9th-10th October in Los Angeles. A demo of Project Porg will be available on the show floor during the event.

Further details on Project Porg will be revealed by ILMxLAB Executive in Charge Vicki Dobbs Beck during the conference keynote, which is due to begin at 9am PT on 10th October, 2018.

For those attending the LEAP Conference, Michael Koperwas of ILMxLAB will be hosting a talk titled ‘Galactic Lessons with Mixed Reality Storytelling. This will take place from 1:40pm PT on Wednesday 10th October, 2018. Koperwas will be addressing conference attendees on the collaboration with Magic Leap and how the company approaches storytelling in the emerging medium of MR.

Also due to speak at the LEAP Conference is John Donovan, CEO of AT&T Communications, Richard Taylor of Weta Workshop, Nick Whiting of Epic Games and Timoni West of Unity Technologies.

Further information on the LEAP Conference can be found on the official Magic Leap website. Future coverage of new and upcoming MR projects will continue to be covered here on VRFocus.

Step Onto Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s Set In This 360 Video

Step Onto Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s Set In This 360 Video

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a 360 video worth flagging up, but a chance to visit the set of Star Wars: The Last Jedi with your VR headset seems too good to miss.

The official Star Wars YouTube account recently posted this panoramic clip that talks about the score of the most recent entry in the sci-fi saga. With clips from interviews with composer John Williams and director Rian Johnson, we’re taken on a seven-minute tour of the film’s production, visiting several sets featuring scenes you’ll instantly recognize from the big screen. You’ll also get to step onto the scoring stage as the film’s music is performed live.

This being YouTube, you can watch the video in VR either through the PS4’s YouTube app for PSVR owners or on smartphone-based devices for those with iOS and Android handsets. If it’s full VR you’re looking for in a galaxy far, far away then we recommend a look at Trials on Tatooine or Droid Bay for your HTC Vive.

Star Wars: Jedi Challenges Update Goes Live With new Duels and Assault Mode

When the Lenovo Mirage augmented reality (AR) headset launched last year with Star Wars: Jedi Challenges it did seem a bit of an expensive gimmick for £249.99 GBP. Certainly aimed more towards the Star Wars fan than casual players, Lenovo then announced just before Christmas that an update would greatly expand the content on offer. Today that has gone live, with a new planet and characters from Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: Jedi Challenges Lenovo Mirage

This is the first content expansion for the headset available for free by downloading the update for the Star Wars: Jedi Challenges mobile app. The content includes:

  • New Lightsaber Duel – Players can duel two elite Praetorian Guards featured in The Last Jedi. This is the first time Jedi Challenges players will duel two characters at the same time.
  • New Planet for Strategic Combat – Three thrilling new levels of Strategic Combat set on Crait, a brand new planet that debuts in the film, will come with the update. Battle new enemies and vehicles including the formidable First Order AT-M6 walker.
  • New Content in Assault mode – All-new enemies and levels will be introduced, including the First Order Stormtrooper Executioner and Riot Control Stormtrooper.
  • Introduction of Porgs – Players will be rewarded with fan-favorite porgs in augmented reality.

Lenovo Star Wars 2

Star Wars: Jedi Challenges and the Lenovo Mirage AR headset comes supplied with a Lightsaber controller and Tracking Beacon that players use to hone their Jedi talents. Players are guided on this AR journey by the Archivist, who instructs players in the ways of the Force.

Currently Lenovo Mirage AR headset is compatible with a range of Android and iOS devices: iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6s, Samsung Galaxy S8, Samsung Galaxy S7 edge, Samsung Galaxy S7, Google Pixel XL, Google Pixel and Moto Z, with Lenovo stating more will be added.

While the kit originally retailed for £249.99, most stockists are now selling the kit for around £199.99, making that idea of a purchase that little bit easier. For the latest AR updates from around the world, keep reading VRFocus.

Fix BB8 And Pals In A New Star Wars VR Game Made By ILMxLAB

Whether you’re in the highest of high places or camped out in the dustiest of dustbowl planets in the back of some uncharted system technology will always fail you. It’s a great equaliser. And what are you going to need when it does go wrong? Someone to fix it all up. Whether you’re in the middle of  a war (the sort involving clones and separatist robots), running the first Galactic Empire, a fledgling rebellion or some sort of new ‘order’ you’re all in the same situation when the aircon doesn’t work, the deathstick machine is busted or you have to dump your cargo at the first sign of an Imperial starship because your hyperdrive has a transponder loose.
Not that you want to be selling anyone any deathsticks anyway. You should go home and rethink your life if so.

No, in all of these situations you’re going to need a mechanic – unless you and some Wookie are really going to fix that hyperdrive? Yeah, I’m sure that’ll work out great. For the Resistance there’s likewise always, always, a need for a good skilled mechanic. After all, those astromechs do have a tendency to blow a gasket over the most trivial of things. That or they get shot. They have been known to get shot. Particularly the brave ones.

In a new virtual reality (VR) game from ILMxLAB and Lucasfilm, Star Wars: Droid Repair Bay — Astro-Mechanic for the Resistance, you will take on the role of said mechanic (more specifically an astromech technician) as it attempts to fix the likes of everyone’s favourite spherical droid BB8 of various faults and maladies.  The videogame, connected to Star Wars: The Last Jedi, (StarWars.com refers to it as “the official VR experience” connected to the film) is an immersive experience that will work on both the HTC Vive and the Samsung Gear VR. However, there is a catch.

Star Wars: Droid Repair Bay is made in partnership with car manufacturer Nissan and will be coming to “select dealerships” in North America (U.S, Mexico, Canada). No information was given regarding a general release or a release to any other markets such as Europe and Asia. You can see some screenshots below.

There’s more still to come with regards to this and VRFocus will bring you that informtaion as we get it.

Find the Force With AR in Star Wars Event

Star Wars fans across the world are eagerly anticipating the release of the latest movie in the Star Wars franchise, Star Wars: The Last Jedi. As part of the promotion for the film and its associated merchandise, a global augmented reality (AR) event will be rolling out in retail store in September.

Fans will be able to download the Star Wars smartphone app in order to participate in the ‘Force Friday II’ event, a follow up to the successful Force Friday event in 2015. The AR component will take the form of a treasure hunt, where fans visiting any of the 20,000 participating retail stores will be able to locate a ‘Find the Force’ graphic that, when scanned, will reveal a character in AR that users can then take pictures with and share on social media.

“Force Friday II is a major milestone in the countdown to Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Star Wars has always championed new technology, and we are excited that augmented reality will allow fans to experience the universe in a whole new way,” said Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm.

“Force Friday II puts fans right at the center of the action using augmented reality to bring our characters to life like never before. The technology theme continues in the Star Wars: The Last Jedi product line, which is our most innovative yet – we can’t wait for fans to see what’s in store,” said Jimmy Pitaro, Chairman, Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media.

By sharing photos taken with the AR characters, fans will be able to enter into the Find the Force sweepstakes to win a ticket to the Star Wars: The Last Jedi première in December.

The event will take place on 1st-3rd September, 2017. Users will need to ensure they have the latest version of the Star Wars app to participate.

VRFocus will continue to report on new applications for AR technology.

Nokia Partners with Lucasfilm to Produce ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ VR Content

At the NAB Show currently in progress in Las Vegas, Nokia announced a partnership with Lucasfilm to deliver an immersive behind-the-scenes VR experience of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. This forms part of the existing, multi-year technology agreement between Nokia and Disney, where the OZO camera is being used to create unique VR content.

The Ozo camera is Nokia’s bold foray into virtual reality, targeting the professional market with one of the most complete, high-quality 360 camera solutions currently available, featuring eight synchronised, 2K x 2K sensors capable of 360 degree stereoscopic video and eight microphones for spatial audio recording.

Announced in April 2016, Nokia’s agreement with The Walt Disney Studios was their first content partnership with a major studio, resulting in a few unique 360 video experiences for the films Pete’s Dragon, Alice Through the Looking Glass, and The Jungle Book. For example, Alice Through the Looking Glass’ premiere included a performance by Pink, and the cast of The Jungle Book were interviewed in a giant room in front of an Ozo.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Lucasfilm and Disney to bring the magic of immersive VR storytelling to one of the most exciting and anticipated movie experiences of all time,” said Brad Rodrigues, interim President of Nokia Technologies. “OZO will enable Star Wars fans around the world to be transported into the incredible worlds depicted in the story, and truly feel the power of The Force together.”

Details have yet to be confirmed regarding the exact VR content Disney’s marketers will produce, but the might of Lucasfilm and the relentless momentum of the Star Wars brand will surely deliver something compelling for the fans during the lead-up to The Last Jedi’s worldwide December release. Brian Miller, Senior Vice President, Franchise Creative & Strategy at Lucasfilm, offers some hints:

“We want nothing more than to share the Star Wars universe with fans around the world and fans tell us they love to have the opportunity to learn more about the process of filmmaking. Utilizing the Nokia Ozo to capture our behind the scenes material allows viewers to be transported to fantastical locations and virtually visit the incredible sets where their favorite Star Wars scenes were captured.”

Previously, Disney has created VR experiences for Pete’s Dragon, Alice Through the Looking Glass, and The Jungle Book.

Details haven’t been released on what the VR content will be or the availability for Star Wars: The Last Jedi VR experience. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set to arrive in cinemas this December so expect further news nearer the time.

With it being a multi-year deal, there’s the very good likelihood that all the upcoming Star Wars movies will get the same treatment, and anything else Disney makes.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Nokia, Disney and Lucasfilm, reporting back with the latest updates.
