Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge Details Are Coming Next Week

Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge

Super excited for Star Wars: Squadrons? Well don’t forget that Oculus and ILMxLAB are developing Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge with new details now confirmed to arrive next Tuesday, 28th July.

In an announcement today, fans will have to wait a week to get the first in-depth story details for Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge since the title’s first unveiling a couple of months ago.

A collaborative effort between Oculus and ILMxLAB, what we know so far is that Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge will be set between Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Featuring new and iconic characters from the franchise hopefully these will be some of the new details released.

The videogame takes place on the planet of Batuu at the Black Spire Outpost. Said to provide: “multiple styles of gameplay and difficulty settings to accommodate a wide variety of players,” it’s unclear what form this will take, a big open-world adventure or a more tightly controlled experience similar to Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series.

Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge

There’s no indication at the moment when Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge will be released this year and what headsets it’ll support; although it’s fair to assume Oculus Quest and Rift are a given.

As VRFocus reported for Star Wars day in May, the franchise has become one of the biggest supporters of VR with a range of content previously released. That’s set to continue in 2020, with Star Wars: Squadrons arriving on 2nd October supporting PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, Valve Index and HTC Vive headsets. As more Star Wars VR details are released, VRFocus will keep you updated.

ILMxLAB: ‘Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge’ First Look Coming July 28th

ILMxLAB today announced that its upcoming VR experience Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge is getting a ‘first look’ next week, July 28th, which should hopefully demystify the studio’s next built-for-VR original story.

Update (July 21st, 2020): ILMxLab say that on July 28th via its @ILMxLAB Twitter account it will be showing off the “first story details” of Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge. We’re hoping for a trailer at the very least, and possibly a more granular release date. Up until now, all images have been specified as ‘concept art’.

The Oculus blog post also included a new concept image (created by ILMxLab’s Stephen Todd), showing off what seems to be a base area, embedded above the original article.

Original Article (May 28th, 2020): The new VR experience is said to take place sometime between Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) on the planet of Batuu, this time bringing VR users to the outskirts of Black Spire Outpost of ‘Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge’, the location-based Disneyland attraction. Black Spire Outpost, the largest settlement on Batuu, is an “infamous stop for traders, adventurers, and smugglers traveling around the Outer Rim and Wild Space,” the official Star Wars website says.

The studio says in an Oculus blog post that the original story will include “multiple styles of gameplay and difficulty settings to bring in a wide variety of players” when it arrives later this year.

And if you’re wondering whether this too will be an Oculus platform exclusive, ILMxLAB is working directly with Oculus Studios to make it happen, so that’s a big yes.

“We’re very happy to collaborate with ILMxLAB again on Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge,” says Facebook VP of Content, AR/VR Mike Verdu. “VR is an incredibly powerful storytelling medium; this experience will immerse fans in a deep and thrilling adventure within the Star Wars galaxy, as they are transported to impossible places through the power of virtual reality.”

There’s no word on exactly when it’s set to release, or which platform we’ll be seeing Star Wars: Tale from the Galaxy’s Edge on first. If it follows in the footsteps of the Vader Immortal triology, we could be seeing another Quest-first release.

New Star Wars VR Game, Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge, Announced

Hot off the heels of the release of Vader Immortal last year, a new Star Wars VR game has just been announced: Star Wars: Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge.

Developer ILMxLAB just announced the new experience, again in collaboration with Facebook’s VR publishing label, Oculus Studios. Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge is set between the events of The Last Jedi and The Rise Of Skywalker, taking place on the planet of Batuu. That’s the same planet visitors to the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge area in Walt Disney World and Disneyland will find themselves in. Check out some official art below.

The experience will apparently feature both new and classic Star Wars characters in an all-new story. Vader Immortal saw us swinging lightsabers and wielding the force under the watchful eye of Darth Vader – what can we expect here?

Few other details are known right now but, interestingly, the press release states that the experience will appeal to both Star Wars fans and VR gamers alike. Vader Immortal was a story-driven VR experience that featured gameplay mechanics but lacked real complexity and challenge (outside of the Lightsaber Dojo). Could ILMxLAB be looking to bridge that gap further in this release?

Official release platforms haven’t been announced but, given this is an Oculus Studios title, expect it to release on Oculus headsets like Rift and Quest. That said, Vader Immortal is coming to PSVR this summer, so it’s possible that we could see it on other devices too.

Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge is coming later this year. We’ll bring you more on the experience as soon as we have it.
