Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge to Include VR Short ‘Temple of Darkness’

Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge

Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge is gearing up to be an exciting part of the series for fans of the franchise, dropping in new canonical adventures. As part of the experience, ILMxLAB has announced Temple of Darkness, a short sub-story featuring Master Yoda.

Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge

Temple of Darkness will take place during Star Wars’ The High Republic era, hundreds of years before the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. One of the stories Azumel bartender Seezelslak tells, you’re placed in the shoes of Jedi Padawan Ady Sun’Zee, who is studying at a remote Jedi research facility on Batuu.

A sudden surge of evil is released from a mysterious relic, poisoning the temple with Ady the sole survivor. Urgently contacting the Jedi Council the Padawan teams up with Jedi Master Yoda (voiced by Frank Oz) to confront the darkness lurking within.

Temple of Darkness in Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge will give Star Wars fans an opportunity to step into a story set during The High Republic era on an incredibly transportive platform,” said James Waugh, Vice President, Franchise Content & Strategy at Lucasfilm in a statement. “It will be one of the first tales released taking place in this bold, adventurous new era for Star Wars storytelling which we intend to see traverse multiple mediums over many years. We’re so proud of what so many incredibly talented authors, developers, licensing partners, and Lucasfilm colleagues, have crafted together — it has been a labour of love.”

Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge

“This powerful short story will transport fans back in time, hundreds of years before the Clone Wars. Through the power of virtual reality, they’ll get their first glimpse of Jedi life during The High Republic,” adds director Jose Perez III. “Everyone at ILMxLAB is thrilled to help usher in this new era of Star Wars storytelling, and I can’t wait for fans to encounter Jedi Master Yoda and Padawan Ady Sun’Zee on November 19th.”

Coming to the Oculus Quest platform on 19th November 2020 retailing for $24.99 USD, Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge will be a two-parter with the second scheduled for release in 2021. For further updates on the titles ahead of launch, keep reading VRFocus.

The studio further announced that Frank Oz, the puppeteer and original voice actor for Yoda, will be reprising his role as the pint-sized Jedi Master.

In addition to Oz’s reprisal of Yoda, C-3PO will be voiced by series original actor Anthony Daniels. Star Wars voice actor veteran Matthew Wood is also playing Black Spire Outpost’s Droid Depot, Mub.

It was revealed earlier this summer that Bobby Moynihan (Saturday Night Live, Star Wars Resistance) is set to play Seezelslak, an Azumel bartender. Following a crash landing on Batuu as a result of a pirate attack, you find yourself swept up into a new adventure on the outskirts of Black Spire Outpost. Chatting with Seezelslak in his cantina, you’ll find yourself transported to other locations and times in the Star Wars galaxy, spurred on by his penchant for telling tall tales.

Watch: Star Wars: Tales Of The Galaxy’s Edge Hits Quest Next Month, Lightsabers Confirmed

Your next virtual trip to the galaxy far, far away is nearly here; Star Wars: Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge lands in November.

The Oculus Quest exclusive reaches the standalone platform on November 19th. Accompanying the news today is a new trailer that gives us easily our best look at the experience yet. Check it out below.

Star Wars Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge Release Date Confirmed

As the name suggests, Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge ties into the Disney attraction set on the planet Batuu. Set during the sequel trilogy-era, you crash land on the planet and find your way to a bar. From there, you’ll go on various adventures, getting into scraps, repairing droids and meeting other Star Wars characters. We’ve already seen R2D2 and C-3PO, but this trailer also gives us our first look at Yoda, too.

Previously developer ILMxLAB confirmed that the experience will feature more game-y elements than its previous title, Vader Immortal, with blaster-based battles and more. However, the end of the trailer also confirms that we’ll once again be wielding a lightsaber. It seems like players will find a Jedi temple and once again learn to wield the force. Expect this section to play a lot like Vader Immortal itself.

Over on the Oculus blog, meanwhile, it was confirmed next month’s release is the first part of the experience, with a second installment set to arrive next year.

As we said above, the game’s exclusive to Oculus Quest for now. Vader Immortal did eventually find its way on PSVR, though, so it’s possible the same happens here. As for a PC VR release? We can but hope at this point in time.

Star Wars fans have had it pretty good on the VR front of late. Along with the PSVR port of Vader Immortal, EA included full VR support for this month’s multiplayer space fighter, Star Wars: Squadrons. Let’s hope Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge rounds off the year nicely. Will you be picking the game up? Let us know in the comments below!

New Star Wars: Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge Details Confirm Yoda, More

Following the first trailer earlier this week, new Star Wars: Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge details have arrived.

The information comes by way of a StarWars.com interview with director Jose Perez III. We already knew that Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge was set on Batuu, the same space-port planet vistors to Disneyland and Disney World can explore in real life. But Perez also spoke towards the ‘Tales’ in the title.

Essentially, players will be listening to stories from an old barkeep named Seezelslak. But, as he begins to talk, you’ll be transported inside the plot for yourself. Using this structure, you’ll get to visit different eras of the Star Wars universe, take part in different activities and also meet a range of characters. This week’s trailer confirmed an appearance by C-3PO and R2-D2, but Perez also spoke to another beloved character – Yoda.

“In Vader Immortal, we let you stand next to Darth Vader. It was terrifying,” Perez said. “In Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge, when you stand next to Yoda, THE Jedi Master, it is powerful and a little heartwarming. I’m super stoked for all the fans to experience that.”

Star Wars: Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge is launching later this year on Quest and Quest 2. It’s not the only Star Wars VR game we’re looking forward to this year; Squadrons is also just a few weeks away from launch, offering multiplayer cockpit battles in X-Wings and TIE Fighters. A strong end of the year for Force fans with VR headsets, then.

‘Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge’ Coming to Quest This Holiday Season, Trailer Here

Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge is ILMxLAB’s next pet VR project for Quest, and the studio today revealed a new glimpse of the action-adventure experience.

Update (September 16th, 2020): ILMxLAB has now confirmed that Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is launching this holiday season on the Quest platform. Check out the game’s first teaser trailer below, however brief it may be.

Original Title (September 14th, 2020): The game’s reveal trailer (linked below) didn’t reveal very much when it was published in late July, but a side effect of this is there’s still plenty to uncover around the upcoming Star Wars game.

Here’s how ILMxLAB describes the game:

Your in-experience character is a droid repair technician. Following a crash landing on Batuu as a result of a pirate attack, you’ll quickly be swept up into a grand adventure on the outskirts of Black Spire Outpost. Chatting with Seezelslak in his cantina, you’ll find yourself transported to other locations and times in the Star Wars galaxy, spurred on by his larger-than-life tales.

Additionally, it was revealed earlier this summer that Bobby Moynihan (Saturday Night Live, Star Wars Resistance) is set to play Seezelslak, an Azumel bartender. Debra Wilson (Mad TV, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order) is voicing Tara Rashin, a Quarren pirate and leader of the local Guavian Death Gang working on Batuu.

In the story, it appears you’ll be jumping through various tales told by Seezelslak which surround a conflict brought on by the Death Gang.

Although we still don’t know exactly when the game is set to release, we’re certain to find out more on Wednesday, September 16th when Facebook Connect kicks off. We’ll be following along, so make sure to check back in for all things AR/VR to come from the livestreams.

5 Things We Learned About Star Wars: Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge, Coming To Quest

As promised, today we got a bit more information about another new VR experience coming to a galaxy far, far away: Star Wars: Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge.

Details come by way of Entertainment Weekly, which got an early look at the project. We already knew a few things about Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge, like its connection to the recently-opened Disney attraction, its placement in the Star Wars timeline between The Last Jedi and Rise Of Skywalker, and the fact we would meet some classic characters. But today’s blowout gives us a few more crumbs of info on what to expect, even if we’re still waiting for a full trailer.

It’s Coming To Quest

Given Facebook partnered with ILMxLAB on Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge, it’s no surprise to learn the game is coming to Oculus Quest. Previously the pair had only been sharing that it would arrive on Oculus platforms. It’s interesting to see no mention of Oculus Rift; the pair’s previous collaboration, Star Wars: Vader Immortal, came to both platforms. Might the PC VR headset get left behind this time around?

It Isn’t Just A Virtual Replica Of Galaxy’s Edge

Intersystem Transport Ship in Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

With Disney Parks only just reopening and the concern of a global pandemic still looming, you may have pegged Tales as a straight-up virtual recreation of Galaxy’s Edge. There is an element of that, but ILMxLAB also stressed that this would have genuinely new elements.

“We want to tell all the stories that you don’t get in Galaxy’s Edge,” Director Jose Perez III told EW. “If you really want those exact stories, if you want to build your lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop, you should go to the physical [park]. We don’t want to just replicate something that you can get in real life. We want to build on it and make something that’s new and unique.”

There Will Be Blaster Combat

Concept art and a close connection to Disney’s Galaxy’s Edge theme park attraction had us wondering if this might be a more family-friendly VR experience that eschewed any action. And though it does sound like we might not wield a lightsaber this time around, EW’s video does confirm we’ll get to fire blasters. It should be a nice change of pace, focusing on an aspect of the Star Wars universe that hasn’t been as thoroughly explored as Jedis and X-Wings thus far.

A Death Gang Wants You, Well, Dead

Star Wars Tales From The Galaxy's Edge New VR Game Art

In Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge, you’ll be hunted by the Guavian Death Gang. Y’know, those guys that wanted Han Solo and Chewbacca’s heads in The Force Awakens? Here we’ll learn a bit more about that group, pitting players against space pirates. The game also features its own take on the classic Star Wars cantina where you’ll meet yet more low lifes and even participate in interactive games.

It’s Still On Track For 2020

With a full trailer yet to be released and mostly concept art officially shared, you’ll forgive us for wondering if Tales would make its initial 2020 launch window. According to the EW article, nothing’s changed. In fact senior producer Alyssa Finley makes it sound as if the game is now in the Quality Assurance stages.

“We’ve got the experience built out,” she said. “So, the time we have now is to play it, to feel it, to go, ‘This could be better. That’s broken. This isn’t working. This is amazing. More of that.'”

Star Wars: Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge launches on Oculus Quest later this year.

New Star Wars: Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge Info Coming Next Week

New information about the other Star Wars VR game coming this year will be revealed next week.

Developer ILMxLAB confirmed that it will reveal the first story details for Star Wars: Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge on July 28th. Exactly how these details will be revealed remains unclear; will this be a simple blog update or might we finally get our first glimpse of the game outside of concept art. There was some new art in the tweet announcing the news, though, which you can see below.

Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge is coming to Oculus later this year, though neither ILMxLAB nor Facebook has confirmed if that means Rift, Quest or both. The app is being developed by the team behind the Star Wars: Vader Immortal series (which is on its way to PSVR). As the name suggests, it somehow ties into the Galaxy’s Edge attraction that recently debuted at Disney parks. In its announcement post, the team noted that it’s looking to integrate some more game-driven ideas into the experiences, whereas Vader Immortal was much more story-focused.

Of course, it’s not the only Star Wars VR game on the way this year. In fact, it’s been a bit overshadowed by the news that Star Wars: Squadrons, EA’s new multiplayer flight combat game, which will also support VR devices when it launches this October.

What are you hoping to see out of Star Wars: Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge? Let us know in the comments below!
