The Virtual Arena: Developments in the LBE VR Arena – Part 1

The Virtual Arena

Investment in Out-of-Home entertainment development continues, and in his latest Virtual Arena column, industry specialist Kevin Williams collects the latest investments, partnerships, and acquisition news, shaping the landscape of the location-based immersive entertainment business.

The recent movements in investment being made into location-based entertainment (LBE) developers and operators cannot be ignored. Even if most Western venues are in lockdown currently, numerous institutions and investors are banking on the post-COVID #Springback hitting the social entertainment market as the pent-up need for fun hits the streets. Many investors positioning themselves to capture this expected windfall.

One such development was German developer SPREE Interactive, VRFocus recently reporting the successful securing of a multimillion-euro investment from strategic investors. Along with announcing that they had launched a V2 of their ‘SPREE Arena’ using the Valve Lighthouse tracking platform for easier operation and pricing. All this and a far-reaching partnership with Pico Interactive to deploy their ‘Pico Neo 2’ headset (powered by the Qualcomm XR chipset), integrated on the ‘SPREE Arena’ platform.

It is this level of investment on the future of LBE that marks the recent slew of announcements emanating from an industry that only a few months ago, some parties were keen to write off. The investment and development community has seen the need to establish a strong position in the opportunity that the social entertainment business will offer the post-lockdown audience.

Regarding that social entertainment mix trying to be developed, competitive eSports and tournament play are crucial elements, and we are seeing the development of a new cross-over between in-home and out-of-home players. One of the aspects of the SPREE Interactive announcement was their partnership with game developer VR Nerds to release an exclusive version of their smash VR competitive blaster Tower Tag. As previously reported, Tower Tag has been deployed in LBE venues in Japan through a previous affiliation with amusement factory SEGA. Having also been launched as a consumer title, the new SPREE release of the videogame will offer a dedicated eSports element for competition, with a leaderboard shared between the home and venue players.

Hoops Madness

Other LBE developers have looked at the need for a dedicated cross-over between the home players, and the future facility tournament competitions. VRstudios has revealed its new VRstudio Sports line, with the release of their VR basketball experience Hoops Madness. The eight-player game has been specially developed to offer an intense competition element, that is supported by a dedicated eSports competition component and leaderboard. But the company has also expanded the competition element by supporting an innovative business model that links the consumer to the venue. Consumer VR players hone their skills to try-out at the facility tournaments.

The investment in using standalone headsets as an alternative to the tethered and backpack PC’s continued, with news of a new partnership from Asia entering the Western LBE scene. Vietnamese based Holomia announced the launch of an update to the game MissionX – VR Laser Tag. A frenetic multiplayer VR arena platform offering 3 game modes, such as capture the flag and deathmatch, across a series of unique maps. The system can accommodate up to 10 players, with the developer running 8 headsets in a game at one time as part of their tournament competition.

The developers have the game running on the Oculus Quest 2, with the developer currently using SideQuest to provide a download, offering commercial use license for VR arcades. The use of SideQuest hoping to negate the need to abide by the Oculus for Business restrictions on commercial entertainment usage, of this kind. But in a move to break into the Western market the company is working to release their platform in partnership with SynthesisVR – developers of a VR facility management and content distribution platform.

Speaking of VR arcade content delivery and support, and one of the largest of these operations had an announcement of their own. SpringboardVR, the leading VR venue management and distribution platform currently, serving some 500 venues with over 400 pieces of VR content; revealed that they had been acquired by Vertigo Games, famous for their multi-platform VR development and publishing with VR titles such as Arizona Sunshine.

Vertigo Games was recently acquired themselves by Koch Media GmbH Austria (a subsidiary of Embracer Group AB), and this latest move was part of the operation consolidating its position in the commercial VR entertainment landscape. Recently we reported on the work that the Vertigo Arcade LBE division of the company had achieved with their new game ‘Ghost Patrol’. In acquiring SpringboardVR, they now represent the leading providers of venue content. As well as managing the revenue operation and royalty transaction of these facilities and games.

Ghost Patrol VR

It was announced that following the acquisition of SpringboardVR, emerging from this move is a brand new operation called ArborXR – developed as content providers to deploy enterprise VR at scale. This follows on from our report from the London education conference, BETT, in 2020 where we reported on development by the team on VR educational content in partnership with HP on their platform.

The investment into commercial (enterprise) development as eagerly attacked by many new start-ups. Where the home entertainment scene seems to be constantly incubating this immersive technology, the need for a more inclusive business model sees growing investment.

We expect to cover in the next part if this report, another series of major acquisitions and partnerships in the coming days.

Vertigo Games Acquires VR Arcade Game Distribution Platform SpringboardVR

Vertigo Games, the studio behind Arizona Sunshine (2017) and upcoming VR shooter After the Fall, today announced that it has acquired SpringboardVR, creators of the eponymous location-based VR content distribution platform.

The acquisition amount was undisclosed, however the move is slated to see several members of the SpringboardVR team transfer to Vertigo Games, something the company says in a press statement will “ensure seamless service and operations for arcade operators and game studios around the world.”

Vertigo Games says both the SpringboardVR brand and software platform will continue to operate “but with the support and resources of the Vertigo Games team.”

“This combination will provide operators with access to free-roam VR content via Vertigo’s HAZE VR distribution platform as well as giving both operators and game studios new tools to grow their LBE business. The roadmap for this new content and features will be released in the near future,” Vertigo Games says.

The founders of SpringboardVR and a few senior members of their development, product, and services teams have moved to form the core of a new company called ArborXR, which manages devices, content, and users in the enterprise VR ecosystem.

Location-based entertainment is still very much an industry in recession, as nearly all VR arcades worldwide shut down for extended periods due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Even now with the initial rollout of a multiple vaccines, the most well-funded names in location-based VR entertainment, The Void and SandboxVR are still dangerously close to complete bankruptcy. With the acquisition of SpringboardVR though, it’s possible companies believe location-based entertainment is about to make a come back.

Vertigo Games Acquires LBE Platform SpringboardVR, Founders Form ArborXR

Arizona Sunshine LBVR (horizontal)

Arizona Sunshine creator Vertigo Games has been involved in the location-based entertainment (LBE) side of the virtual reality (VR) industry for several years now and today marks another step in that journey. The company has completed its acquisition of SpringboardVR, a platform providing VR venue management software and content.

Arizona Sunshine LB VR Edition - Key Art

The purchase brings SpringboardVR under the umbrella of Vertigo Games and its new parent company Koch Media. Certain key customer-facing members of the SpringboardVR team will be moving across to ensure its service and operations remain unaffected for arcade operators worldwide. The SpringboardVR brand will continue with VR arcades also able to access Vertigo Games’ own free-roam VR content via its HAZE VR distribution platform, offering titles like Arizona Sunshine LB VR.

“Vertigo Games continues to believe in the power of location-based virtual reality to drive the growth of the medium,” said John Coleman, Director of Business Development at Vertigo Games in a statement. “We’ve had a great relationship with the SpringboardVR team over the past four years, and we are excited to pick up the responsibility to carry forward the vision of SpringboardVR.”

With the acquisition now complete the founders of SpringboardVR and a core team are launching a new company called ArborXR. This will be an enterprise-focused company which manages devices, content, and users in a singular ecosystem.

ArborXR

“ArborXR is a natural evolution for us – we always saw the transformative power of VR beyond entertainment,” noted Jordan Williams, Co-Founder and COO of ArborXR. “Many companies today are trying to deliver XR training and experiences using consumer hardware and inadequate enterprise software. Consequently, as they transition from pilot projects to larger deployments, they face all kinds of problems. We’ve already built a commercial VR solution managing thousands of users, devices, and content titles and we translated that experience to ArborXR, which is purpose-built to make it easier for companies and content providers to deploy enterprise VR at scale.”

Vertigo Games’ VR experiences are currently available across more than 700 arcades, theme parks and other venues, with the Arizona Sunshine franchise remaining strong.

There’s been renewed interest in the LBE sector with the likes of SPREE Interactive continuing to invest and Immersive Tech revealing its UNCONTAINED attraction. For further updates on the sector, keep reading VRFocus.

Vertigo Games Buys VR Arcade Platform SpringboardVR

Arizona Sunshine developer and A Fisherman’s Tale publisher Vertigo Games has acquired VR arcade software company, SpringboardVR.

Neither group disclosed the value of the sale. For the past few years, SpringboardVR operated a subscription-based management platform for VR arcades with software that allows users to choose from a range of officially licsensed titles. As they play, arcade owners are able to set how long the customer can use the platform among other aspects. Springboard charged $30 a month for use of its platform, with discounts available for multiple stations within an arcade.

A press release confirms that this service will continue to run under Vertigo’s ownership, with several of the team members joining the company. Vertigo itself has its own arcade business under which it’s distributed an arcade version of Arizona Sunshine and unique games like Corsair’s Curse and Ghost Patrol VR, which was announced last year.

But the COVID-19 pandemic has introduced major challenges for the VR arcade industry, with most locations having remained closed for the better part of a year now. Vertigo — which itself was acquired by Koch Media in 2020 — has continued to support the sector, even offering relief packages over the course of the last year. Even with vaccines now rolling out across the world, it remains to be seen when it will be safe for VR arcades to fully reopen.

Other founders of SpringboardVR are moving on to start a new company, ArborXR, which offers software to streamline VR and AR enterprise use cases.

Blackwall Labs Offer Some Festive Cheer, Rhythmatic & NYC Bungee Free to Arcades Until Feb

Rhythmatic

Like many retail establishments, location-based entertainment (LBE) has had a rough 2020. Studios like Ubisoft have tried to help out by offering license-free access to their titles and now British developer Blackwall Labs is doing the same, with free access to Rhythmatic and NYC Bungee.

The announcement comes as the team reveal that Rhythmatic has already become one of SpringboardVR’s top worldwide videogames as well as being highly trending on SynthesisVR – both distribution platforms for LBE content. The title only officially released at the beginning of December having been available in beta form since the summer.

“We want to say a huge thank you to everyone in the community……we are absolutely delighted to tell you that Rhythmatic is one of the highest trending games on SynthesisVR and also in the top 20 most popular VR games on the Springboard global usage chart just 2 weeks after release,” said Blackwall Labs co-founder Dan Perrin in a statement.

Rhythmatic is a multiplayer rhythm-action title catered towards VR arcades. Offering familiar gameplay where you have to slice orbs in time to the music, up to six players can either go head-to-head or co-op challenges. The gameplay also features powerups to help improve scores or hinder opponents.

Rhythmatic

“We couldn’t have done this without your help, feedback and support. We know that this year has been a tough one for everyone, but we believe that 2021 will be much brighter once we reach the early Spring,” Perrin continued. “To show our appreciation and also to help people get through these last hard months we have decided to make both Rhythmatic totally free for you and your locations until 28th February.”

As well as Rhythmatic being license-free until February 2021, Blackwall Labs’ extreme sports experience NYC Bungee is getting the same treatment; allowing players to climb the Statue of Liberty and then bungee off the top.

The studio has plenty of update plans for Rhythmatic going into next year, such as upping the multiplayer to 12-players and adding more dubstep, drum and bass, house and rock tracks. As further information is released, VRFocus will let you know.

The Virtual Arena: Competition is King in VR!

Covering the immersive Out-of-Home entertainment scene for VRFocus, in his latest Virtual Arena column, industry specialist Kevin Williams reports on a multitude of brand new commercial entertainment platforms, new eSports offerings and London VR site openings that caught his eye traversing the international XR entertainment scene.

The frantic nature of VR in the commercial entertainment scene continued to gain momentum, with several new platforms launching and facilities opening internationally. While in London, a number of these new developments were on display.

First off was the International Casino Exhibition (ICE), the gaming and gambling industries largest European convention filling the London ExCel centre. While in previous years, virtual reality (VR) had played a larger part in the gaming show, it was much harder to find this year. But one big showing was the Vbet platform, developed in conjunction with BetConnect. Called ‘Vbet Boxing Game’, two-players in their own ring spared with each other using the Oculus Quest headset. A VR attraction that will be deployed in casinos as an audience draw.

Another major show for VR at the casino event was on the Gaming Malta booth – a local operator of an eSports racing simulator centre presented their race-rig’s – using the ImSim racing seat, with the latest iRacing content, able to be experienced on the Oculus Rift headset. The ability to offer intense VR entertainment is also supported by the audience appeal of this kind of installation.

The explosion in eSports was a major component of the ICE gaming and gambling trade conference, with a vast dedicated arena streaming live. VR is playing its part in defining the eSports business. Recently SpringboardVR, one of the leading distributors and service suppliers of game content for VR arcades, announced they had teamed up with the Virtual Athletics League (VAL) launching the “Pistol Whip VR Tournament”, supported by Oculus and iBUYPOWER. It’ll feature across SpringboardVR’s 500 connected locations for the second round. With the final streamed live on Twitch and Facebook there will be a prize pool of $10,000 up for grabs.

VAL - Pistol WhipConcerning the London area, the deployment of Location-Based Entertainment (LBE) VR facilities across the international market has continued to gain mentum. And Just down the road from the major gaming exhibition, the UK capital welcomed its latest slew of new VR venues hoping to drive the sector.

First off and the massive entertainment venue that is The O2 arena has already included a VR element, in partnership with the venues’ Hollywood Bowl placement, BANDAI NAMCO Amusement Europe had installed Europe’s first “VR ZONE Portal London”. Based on the Japanese parents dedicated VR installation concept, the first UK installation has been revitalized – along with the Mario Kart Arcade GP VR (£7.99 p/p) set-up, the brand new experience ‘Godzilla VR’ (£4.99 p/p) saw the use of two unique motion cockpits.

VR Zone Portal London

The uniquely created Godzilla VR was launched in Japan last year, and this was the first chance we had to play the Western version of the game – an on-rails helicopter simulator experience, with the player only interacting in high adrenaline moments blasting the movie monster with missiles and cannons, as Godzilla levels city-blocks and skyscrapers. The game proved a fun, but short, experience – more a ride with some shooting elements, reflected in its lower price to play.

Hollywood Bowl is not the only VR entertainment installation at the O2 arena, with the adjacent opening of a VR cluster by IMMOTION – the company operating its popular Thrill Coaster, the ‘VR Cinema Pod’ extreme-ride experienced themed around the capital city (as well as a library of other ride scenarios). Next was the new inclusion of their own racing sim area for four of their ‘VR Multi-Racers’.

Immotion - Thrill Coaster

The IMMOTION experience included a VR Gaming Arena, based on the popular Raw Data videogame. This was a unique tethered version of the title, developed in partnership with originator of the game Survios. One of the many consumer VR game developers that are pivoting into creating a commercial entertainment presence. IMMOTION was charging a standard pass (£6 p/p), as well as variety (£20 p/p), and premium pass (£30 p/p), for game time duration on the assembled systems.

England saw the opening of its latest VR ZONE Portal and the third installation of Mario Kart Arcade GP VR in Europe. BANDAI NAMCO’s operation division runs the well-known Namco Funscape, located on London’s South Bank. This multi-level amusement venue has added a compact VR ZONE Portal Westminster that houses the four-player racer based on the popular Nintendo franchise (£7.95 p/p).

Mario Kart VR

But Funscape has also added third-party VR amusement pieces to their mix, away from the VR ZONE Portal. The venue had three of the most popular VR amusement platforms, (as we touched on in our Entertainment, Attractions and Gaming (EAG) expo coverage last month). The London site including a VRsenal Beat Saber Arcade machine, and the two-rider Virtual Rabbid’s The Wild Ride (LAI Games), all front-and-centre. Funscape had also installed two version of the Xtrematic ‘Extreme-Machine’ – a standing VR ride experience, using an innovative standing motion platform.

It was also interesting to see other new London based VR arcades jumping into the mix – while visiting London’s Shepherds Bush area, we had a chance to briefly pop into the new Electric Dreams – VR arcade. Located in a retail unit, the operation, along with a KATVR Omni direction treadmill system, runs two VR multiplayer enclosures using the three-player, wireless, free-roam, HTC Vive system as well as a franchise of the ‘Arkave VR’ platform from YDX. The operation charging a sliding scale for duration of play, (starting at £7 p/p, for 10-minutes). This latest operation reflecting that there are many other venues currently in the works to populate this scene.

Beat Saber Arcade

Other VR developments taking place recently, included the holding of the Japan Amusement Expo 2020 (JAEPO) the trade event for the territories amusement and gaming sector. On display for the first time on the amusement giant SEGA Interactive’s booth was the SKONEC Entertainment ‘Beat Saber Arcade’ machine. This is the Asian variant of the popular VR music videogame being presented to Japanese trade. It was interesting to see the reaction to the VR machine, attracting attention. Looking to challenge the plethora of traditional music rhythm titles that dominate the Japanese market, (as well as on the international amusement gaming scene).

This concludes our whirlwind reporting from the LBE VR scene. Next month will see major developments as the action moves to the USA and several momentous location openings and major trade conferences that will offer a taste of the evolving future of this scene.

Cloudhead Games Confirm VR Arcade Version of Pistol Whip

There are a couple of exciting virtual reality (VR) titles arriving next week, one of which is Pistol Whip by Cloudhead Games. Due for launch across multiple home head-mounted displays (HMD) on 7th November, the studio has now confirmed that even if you don’t own a headset you’ll still have a chance to play, as Pistol Whip is coming to location-based entertainment (LBE) locations thanks to SpringboardVR.

Pistol Whip

To help facilitate the arcade launch on 7th November Cloudhead Games is offering free licensing for the first day, with Pistol Whip priced at seven cents per minute thereafter.

The musical first-person shooter (FPS) was designed from day one with both home and LBE gaming in mind, combining light gun titles like Time Crisis and Virtua Cop with the rhythmic flow of videogames like Beat Saber“We have been analyzing the market for years and have talked to many LBE operators to learn what works and what doesn’t, said Jo Dunlop, Communications & Business Development for Cloudhead Games. “We wanted to develop a game that will work flawlessly in LBE while having extra layers of depth for the home audience.”

First revealed during the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2019 in June, Pistol Whip takes place in a highly stylised world where players can shoot and melee enemies to a thumping soundtrack, whilst dodging bullets at the same time. Featuring EDM artists from Kannibalen Records, including Apashe, HVDES, and Black Tiger Sex Machine, players will have access to weapon mods along the way, including dual-wielding. Future updates will include additional songs.

Pistol Whip

Coming to Oculus QuestOculus RiftHTC Vive and Valve Index next Thursday, Pistol Whip adds to the long line of VR rhythm-action titles which are out or coming to headsets. Other titles include Harmonix’s Audica, BoxVR, Synth Riders, Audio Shield and upcoming experience Viro Move.

Making LBE centric attractions is a growing trend amongst VR developers. Most recently Maze Theory revealed a stripped back version of Doctor Who: The Edge of Time would be rolled out, and Japanese team Yomuneco Inc. planned on bringing Swords of Gargantua to locations worldwide. For further updates on Pistol Whip, keep reading VRFocus.

An Arcade Version of Doctor Who: The Edge of Time Coming to VR Locations on ‘Doctor Who Day’

Doctor Who: Edge of Time is due for release across various virtual reality (VR) headsets in less than two weeks. Today, developer Maze Theory has confirmed its been working on a location-based entertainment (LBE) version in tandem, with a plan to release it in VR arcades at the end of November.

Doctor Who: Edge of Time

Maze Theory, in conjunction with BBC Studios and publisher PlayStack, has partnered with several content distribution platforms; Synthesis VR, SpringboardVR, Ctrl V and Vive Arcade to make Doctor Who: Edge of Time available in more than 100 arcades worldwide, located across the UK, Europe, Asia and North America.

Doctor Who: Edge of Time will be a special customised version of the home videogame, featuring three modified levels for an action-packed 20-minute experience. They’ll be able to explore the iconic TARDIS, come face-to-face with Weeping Angels and pilot a Dalek through a shooting sequence, fighting against drones and other aliens from the franchise.

“As we’ve been making the feature-length game, we have engaged with fans who are desperate to try it out,” said Maze Theory CEO, Ian Hambleton in a statement. “Our aim is to make it possible for anyone, including those that don’t have VR, to step inside the show, collude with the Doctor and experience first-hand what it’s like to pilot the TARDIS and come face-to-face with the show’s terrifying monsters and aliens.

“We firmly believe VR is the future of entertainment as it offers unparalleled opportunities for people to immerse themselves in incredible adventures. It’s truly mind-blowing – if a little terrifying in parts!”

Doctor Who: Edge of Time

“We’re excited that from 23rd November, Doctor Who Day, fans will be able to enjoy an arcade version of Edge of Time in VR arcades around the world. Whilst the full game will be widely available for those with VR headsets the arcade version will let anyone try the experience,” adds Bradley Crooks, Global Head of Games & Interactive at BBC Studios.

SpringboardVR Bringing eSport Tower Tag to US & European VR Arcades

Last year VRFocus reported on Sega bringing VR-Nerds’ multiplayer PvP first-person shooter (FPS) Tower Tag to its Tokyo Joypolis amusement park. This Winter Tower Tag will be coming to even more location-based entertainment (LBE) locations thanks to a deal with SpringboardVR.

Tower Tag

Already available in 40 countries with the title already seeing success in Asia, the deal with SpringboardVR will see the videogame arrive in more North American and European locations who use the station management and content distribution platform; over 500 in all.

Tower Tag is a mixture of competitive shooter mixed with laser tag style gameplay. Players move around the map by controlling platforms to gain strategic advantages over opponents, using a laser rope to winch themselves across. Platforms have a central tower that can be used for cover from incoming fire and are replicated in the real world offering an added sense of immersion.

“Tower Tag is one of the very best single games for VR arcades out there, in my opinion,” said Colin Parnell of CentreVR in a statement. “To have it added to Springboard should be an arcade owners wish come true, as they can now use one of the best titles, without the large upfront costs that we had.”

Tower Tag

“After reaching our adoption goals in Asia, it seemed like an obvious move to partner up with other leading community builders like SpringboardVR and the Virtual Athletics League,” said Phillip Steinfatt, co-founder of Tower Tag.“ Both have proven to be not only professional but also very passionate about cultivating VR eSports in the Location-based VR communities. For content creators like us, this is a match made in heaven, and I can’t wait to get this off the ground!

Tower Tag is available on the SpringboardVR marketplace until 1st December 2019 for free, allowing vendors to trial the experience with customers. After that date, they then have the option to purchase a per-minute, monthly or yearly commercial license for the videogame.

There’s a lot going on in the LBE space at the moment with The VOID launching Avengers: Damage ControlZero Latency opening its first London, UK location and much more. Sign up for the US vs Europe VR Arcade Tower Tag tournament taking place in early November and as always, VRFocus will continue its coverage of VR LBE, reporting back with all the latest announcements.
