Ubisoft’s Eagle Flight & Space Junkies Will be Free for VR Arcades For a Limited Time

As COVID-19 lockdowns begin to ease in some countries around the world, businesses are beginning to reopen which also includes location-based entertainment (LBE) venues like VR arcades. Today, LBE content distribution platform SynthesisVR has announced that Ubisoft’s Eagle Flight Arcade and Space Junkies Arcade will be license-free to operators for a limited time.

The gesture is to help commercial premises in these difficult times, as the public are slowly allowed to resume social activities. So from now until 30th September (11.59pm PST) those arcades which use SynthesisVR can access Eagle Flight Arcade and Space Junkies Arcade for free. If they already subscribe then no additional steps are required.

Eagle Flight was one of Ubisoft’s earliest videogames developed exclusively for virtual reality (VR) headsets like Oculus Rift. The gameplay allows you to fly around a deserted Paris 50 years after humans have disappeared. You can fly past iconic landmarks and race though narrow streets, competing against other players and protecting territory.

Space Junkies on the other hand, is a sci-fi first-person shooter where you face off PvP style in orbital arenas. Equipped with backpacks, in these zero-g matches every direction could spell danger. You’re equipped with a basic loadout with more powerful weapons littered around the environment, offering a chance to improve your odds or get caught in a trap.

The measure is one of a number big companies have been rolling out to help the LBE VR industry since it was effectively closed down several months ago. Hologate, for example, developed new Hygiene and Safety Standards which could be used by most venues, Zero Latency has been installing systems remotely and Vertigo Arcades has just launched team-based experience Ghost Patrol VR.

VRFocus’ The Virtual Arena has been closely following developments, from reopening plans to how the pandemic will affect the industry going into the future. As VR arcades begin to reopen VRFocus will keep you updated on the latest industry news.

Ubisoft Shelves Flatscreen Version of ‘Space Junkies’, Issues Final Update

Space Junkies (2019), the multiplayer sci-fi arena shooter from Ubisoft Montpellier, has reached a pretty significant impasse; the studio is pulling its previously planned support for the flatscreen version of the game, and issuing its final update on PSVR and PC VR headsets.

In a brief blog post, the studio says that they’re no longer actively developing for Space Junkies. The servers will still be open to VR players, although if you’re looking for more content from the multiplayer arena shooter, you’re out of luck.

Here’s the full statement below:

Hello Spacers,

We will be bringing the Space Junkies non-VR open beta to a close on Wednesday August 28th at 9am UTC.

While this is the end of our journey in terms of development of the game, the team is proud to have achieved what we set out to do: create a fun and fast-paced competitive FPS in VR.

The game servers will remain open and accessible to players who purchased the VR version of Space Junkies so that Spacers can continue to take on each other in the many community tournaments we’ve seen since launch.

The current plan, however, is to not release the non-VR version of the game.

Be sure to join our official Discord to keep in touch with other Spacers.

Released in March 2019 on PC VR headsets and PSVR, we gave Space Junkies a solid [7.7/10] in our review, noting however that the admittedly standard arena shooter experience would need more than smooth visuals and Unreal Tournament-style gameplay to keep users happy in the long run.

After launch, the studio issued several updates and also organized multiple community events in an effort to stimulate ongoing user support. The game was most recently featured by ESL in Season 3 of the VR League, which saw over $25,000 go to finals winners.

Although it seems fairly early to call it quits—it’s only been a little over five months since launch—Space Junkies has benefited from the most updates and developer attention as far as Ubisoft VR titles go.

Many of Ubisoft’s VR games have basically languished after launch, including Eagle Flight (2016), Werewolves Within (2016), Transference (2018) and the VR mode in Trackmania Turbo (2016), with Star Trek: Bridge Crew (2017) as the sole exception thanks to its paid DLC centered on the Next Generation missions.

So while it seems Ubisoft has basically been treating VR as an experiment since the hardware’s general launch in 2016, it’s clear the company hasn’t given up on VR as a whole. Unearthed by VRFocusUbisoft is apparently hiring a 50-person team to lead an unannounced ‘AAA’ VR title now, so the company as a whole seems far from deterred.

Space Junkies Stopping Development, Non-VR Version Won’t Release

It would seem like last-ditch efforts to bolster Ubisoft’s Space Junkies have fallen flat.

An update last week marked the end of development of the zero-gravity VR shooter. Since launch earlier this year, the game had received several updates adding new maps, modes and more. Writing in a blog post, developer Ubisoft Montpellier said it was “proud to have achieved” what it set out to do. The game’s first season of content came to a close in July.

“The game servers will remain open and accessible to players who purchased the VR version of Space Junkies so that Spacers can continue to take on each other in the many community tournaments we’ve seen since launch,” the team wrote.

In Space Junkies, up to four players jumped into arena-style deathmatches. The game had an arcade influence that separated it from similar titles like Echo VR.

Interestingly, Ubisoft Montpellier also confirmed the non-VR version of Space Junkies would not be releasing. The studio launched a beta for the standard version back in July. No reason was given for why the non-VR version was effectively canceled.

The non-VR beta looked to be one of several efforts Ubisoft made to grow Space Junkies’ audience. While we were quite fond of the game, there were signs it may have been struggling from early on. A month after launch, for example, Ubisoft held a hefty sale for the game, slashing 60% off of its price tag.

This doesn’t mean Ubisoft itself is done with VR. In fact, just this morning we reported that the company is currently hiring for an “unannounced AAA VR project” based on one of its existing IP.

Space Junkies Is Getting A Non-VR Version, Beta Now On

Ubisot’s plans to grow its VR multiplayer game Space Junkies now include making it, uh, not VR.

The zero gravity shooter just launched an open beta for a non-VR version. It launched via uPlay on July 25th and will run until August 7th. Standard PC players will be able to throw down with PC VR and PSVR players, too.

It might be hard to imagine Space Junkies working without motion controllers but the game already supports DualShock 4 on PSVR. Presumably there will be a flat-screen version of the game on PS4 too should everything go according to plan. No word on if it could come to entirely non-VR platforms like Xbox too.

Space Junkies is a likeable small scale arena shooter. There have long been signs that the game hasn’t built up as big an audience as Ubisoft might have hoped. It saw a heavy sale just weeks after launch. Building VR multiplayer games with large user bases has been a tough challenge in a time in which headset sales can’t compare to modern consoles. Just last week said goodbye to Starblood Arena, a PSVR exclusive shooter with backing from Sony itself.

Nevertheless, Ubisoft continued to support Space Junkies with free content long past launch and still plans to do so. New maps and modes are arriving fairly regularly, and the game is playable in VR arcades too. Hopefully this beta boosts its numbers and ensures a longer life.

If the team is looking to bump up the number of VR players, though, might we suggest an Oculus Quest port? Just an idea.

Ubisoft Launches ‘Space Junkies’ Non-VR Open Beta Today

Space Junkies (2019), Ubisoft Montpellier’s VR arena shooter, seems to be hunting for a larger playerbase as the studio today launched an open beta for non-VR PC users.

The open beta is available from July 25th – August 7th via Uplay (PC only) and includes cross-play with the platform’s standard mix of VR users.

To access the non-VR open beta, visit the official webpage to add it to your Ubisoft account, which will let you install the open beta via the ‘Free Game’ section in Uplay.

The open beta supports mouse & keyboard, and gamepad. Unlike the VR version, which suggests users have at least a Core i5-4590 or Ryzen5 1500X CPU, and a GTX 970 (4 GB) or RX 480X (8GB) GPU, the version for traditional monitors is predictably much more modest in the specs department.

At minimum, the PC-only version game (for 60FPS on low settings) requires a Core i5 2500k or AMD FX 6350, and Nvidia GTX660 or AMD Radeon R9 270X. Recommended specs for 82 FPS on ultra graphics settings are a Core i5 4590 with Nvidia GTX780.

It’s unsure what advantages/disadvantages PC players will have over their headset-wearing counterparts, although the beta will likely reveal just how balanced Ubisoft Montpellier has been able to make it.

The studio has been quick to issue post-launch updates however, and has improved a few of the things we mentioned in our full review; we gave it a solid [7.7/10], so whatever the open beta reveals, it would be uncharacteristic of the studio to simply throw a massive advantage to PC users. It’s also unsure how the addition of traditional monitor support will affect its position as a budding VR eSport, as it would be the only game in ESL’s VR League that includes a player population using non-VR devices.

Space Junkies supports a wide swath of VR devices (with cross-play) including HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Valve Index, Windows VR headsets, and PSVR. The game typically retails for $20; at the time of this writing the game is available through Humble Bundle for just $7.

Space Junkies Third Update Delivers a New Map, Weapon and Gameplay Modes

Ubisoft launched multiplayer combat arena experience Space Junkies back in March, and during the course of the following three months released a new content update. As it’s almost the end of June it’s time for Episode 3 with the studio introducing plenty of free content for players to enjoy.

Space Junkies Episode3

In this update – which applies to all versions (PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift/Rift S and HTC Vive) – players now have access to a new weapon called the Bowminator which can quickly fire three shots at once, or one powerful shot when keeping the string pulled.

There’s a new map called The Jail, geared towards close and medium range combat – great for those who like using the sword. A new Squid variant known as “Mental Mollusk”, plus a new bots feature. Whether you’re new to Space Junkies or just wish to practice a map or using a weapon, now you can offline against a bunch of AI.

Lastly, there are two new modes. It used to be that Space Junkies only allowed up to 2v2 matches but now that’s been increased to 3v3, with lobbies supporting up to six players. The other mode is Chivalry. This is a little mode hardcode than the rest, with players only having access to the bow, sword and shield, old school medieval fighting in space.

Space Junkies Episode 3

“Chivalry was inspired by one of our Gameplay Programmers who likes to Cosplay and play with medieval swords,” explains Ubisoft Producer Adrian Lacey on Oculus Blog. “Players enjoyed close quarter combat in our spherical battlespaces, so we decided to take it a step further by adding the ‘Bowminator’ to increase skill level, encourage precision shooting, and add a tactical layer.”

And that’s it in terms of the Space Junkies roadmap Ubisoft has released. The studio has made mention of a surprise to come but no other details have been made available just yet.

If you’ve not picked up Space Junkes yet then now might be a good time as its currently discounted. On the Oculus Store, it’s retailing for £13.32 GBP (normally £33.99), on Steam its got a 63% saving down to £12.57, and on PlayStation Store its £15.99. ‘Space Junkies’ Update Brings New Map, Modes, Training Bots & More

Space Junkies (2019), the zero-G VR shooter from Ubisoft, just got its ‘Episode 3’ update, which adds a host of fresh content to the game on all supported platforms, including PC VR headsets and PSVR.

Announced on the Oculus blog, Ubisoft’s Montpellier studio has added a new map to the game called ‘The Jail’, an abandoned alien prison facility. The Jail is now the game’s largest interior map, including multiple levels and cover options.

As for new modes, Space Junkies now has a new 3v3 mode as well as something called ‘Chivalry mode’, which focuses on a new mid/long-range precision bow and arrow weapon.

Ubisoft says you can choose to let off three arrows from your quiver or pull back on the bow longer to merge your shots into a single laser arrow for a more powerful punch. Chivalry mode also limits your equipment to ratchet up the challenge.

“Chivalry was inspired by one of our Gameplay Programmers who likes to Cosplay and play with medieval swords,” explains Ubisoft producer Adrian Lacey. “Players enjoyed close quarter combat in our spherical battlespaces, so we decided to take it a step further by adding the ‘Bowminator’ to increase skill level, encourage precision shooting, and add a tactical layer.”

A new character called the Mental Mollusk is also now available, a member of the Quantic Calamari family.

Space Junkies, once a multiplayer-only game, now has training bots, which finally lets you hone your skills on your lonesome. Ubisoft has added three difficulty modes. You’ll also be able to fight bots while you wait for multiplayer matches to queue up.

Space Junkies is currently 62% off through Steam (Index, Rift, Vive, Windows VR) and the Oculus Store (Rift). The discount lasts until July 9th. The game is also priced at $20 through the PS Store for PSVR.

Space Junkies Free Update Adds New Game Mode And Two New Maps

Space Junkies Free Update Adds New Game Mode And Two New Maps

Today Ubisoft released the second free post-launch update for Space Junkies which includes a brand new game mode called Instablast and two new maps in Final Destination an Gunner Station.

The new mode, Instablast, is a lot like the Golden Gun mode from N64’s Goldeneye in that everyone has the exact same gun that can kill opponents in a single shot, which also means everyone can be killed the same way too making each shot extremely deadly. Usually Space Junkies has a relatively long time-to-kill so this mode would be a big change.

This update comes on the heels of two highly requested features being added to the game: PS Move support and smooth turning. Players can also use the 3DRudder foot controller in “Early Access” on PSVR or PC as well that lets players move their characters by leaning their feet.

Reportedly Ubisoft will continue to add new game modes, characters, maps, and more throughout “Season 1” as the game continues to evolve and mature. Each episode contains four episodes and will last for 16 weeks. This marks episode two of the first season.

In our review we described Space Junkies as similar to Unreal Tournament with its fast-paced gunplay and heavy focus on rapid movement and full 6DOF control throughout space using a jetpack. It’s certainly one of the more intense VR games from a movement perspective and needing to constantly have your head on a swivel to look out for enemies ramps up the intensity.

‘Space Junkies’ Now Supports Move Controllers on PSVR

Ubisoft recently pushed an update to the PSVR version of Space Junkies (2019), the zero-g arena shooter, that finally brings PS Move support to the game.

Launched simultaneously on the PlayStation Store, Steam, and the Oculus Store back in March, Space Junkies boasts support for all major tethered VR headsets. However its launch on PSVR left something to be desired, as PSVR users were relegated to using the DualShock 4 gamepad while players on Vive and Rift made full use of their respective motion controllers.

Initially, launching the PSVR version with gamepad-only controls was done out of necessity—Move’s inherent lack of thumbsticks or large enough touchpad would make quick, accurate control of the player a much harder prospect. To keep PSVR users competitive (Ubisoft is couching Space Junkies as a budding eSport), the studio made the compromise to leave out Move support at launch.

In a new video (linked blow), Ubisoft Montpellier’s Adrian Lace explains some the changes that have come now that PS Move is supported. Lace says PSVR users can now do a number of movements once only possible on Vive/Rift, including grabbing your sword or shield by reaching to your shoulder, and locomoting left and right by pressing either ‘triangle’ or ‘square’ to rotate smoothly.

While having to use PS Move’s tiny buttons for fine control is admittedly not ideal, it at least now gives users an extra dose of immersion as they can now shoot guns using their own two hands—and to say the least—use the game’s smartwatch-style UI. You can check out the video below.

PlayStation Move Support Arrives on Space Junkies

Just over a month ago Ubisoft outlined plans regarding future updates for its zero-gravity multiplayer Space Junkies,  including work on supporting PlayStation Move. PlayStation VR owners will be happy to hear that Space Junkies does now included support for the motion controllers.

Space Junkies

From today PlayStation Move can now be used to navigate the zero-g arenas and take the fight directly to opponents using intuitive motion controls, just like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive players have been doing. The new control scheme also allows for smooth turning if needed. The full controller layout can be seen below with a video at the bottom of the page going into even greater detail regarding the movement nuances now available with PlayStation Move.

The PlayStation Move update continues Ubisoft’s rollout of improvements for Space Junkies which saw the first episode of the teams’ Season 1 content arrive at the end of April. This saw the addition of a new character, The Quantic Calamarii; a new map, the Orbital Mine; a new game mode called Final Cut; more customisation items as well as minor bug fixes and balancing adjustments.

The road map for additional content will see episode 2 arrive later in May, episode 3 in June and episode 4 in July, all for free. Ubisoft hasn’t detailed which episodes will feature particular content but there will be more maps, new equipment, daily and weekly challenges, as well as the introduction of bots.

Space Junkies

Ubisoft has shown a firm dedication to virtual reality (VR) content development over the years, providing players at home with a rich variety of titles alongside location-based entertainment (LBE) projects. The most recent being the release of  Beyond Medusa’s Gatea multiplayer escape room based in the Assassin’s Creed Odyessy universe which is available at numerous VR arcades across North America and Europe via the Ubisoft Escape Games platform.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Ubisoft’s VR efforts and Space Junkies, reporting back with the latest announcements and updates as they happen.
