Polyarc Reveal Further Details on PlayStation VR title Moss

Today, Polyarc has introduced the world to its new virtual reality (VR) adventure title Moss. Announced during Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE) E3 2017 press conference, Moss is a puzzle experience featuring a new pint-sized hero, a mouse called Quill. While the footage shown during the press conference showcased a little of what to expect Polyarc has now gone into further detail.

Talking about its latest project, Tam Armstrong, co-founder and CEO of Polyarc said in a statement: “We are designing Moss with the fundamentals that we know make a great action-adventure game while at the same time considering every decision with the unique strengths and opportunities VR offers fully in mind. As a studio dedicated to the new medium of VR, our goal is still the dream we’ve always had as game developers—to create engaging worlds and share them with everyone.”

Describing the gameplay Danny Bulla, co-founder and design director of Polyarc commented: “In Moss, players can reach out, touch, and interact with the environment while guiding Quill through her journey. As a character within the world, players will work together with Quill to solve puzzles, overcome obstacles, and conquer any danger that comes their way. As gamers, we’ve been conditioned for years to hold a gamepad in our laps when playing games, letting our thumbs and fingers do the controlling. It has been a great experience to create an immersive game that encourages players to reach into and interact with a tactile world.”

“Developing a game like Moss has been an inspiring challenge. We have the chance to connect the players to the world and characters in an entirely new and exciting way. For example, Quill can see you and she reacts to your movements as well as the environments you interact with,” said Chris Alderson, co-founder and art director of Polyarc. “Our goal is to let the player’s senses teleport them to a world where the characters and environments truly feel alive.”

Moss has only been confirmed for PlayStation VR so expect it to be exclusive to the platform – SIE tends to like its exclusives – and it’ll release globally this holiday season.

As Polyarc reveals further details about Moss, VRFocus will bring you the latest details.

CCP Games’ Sparc Will be Exclusive to PlayStation VR in 2017

Today, PlayStation VR owners should be rubbing their hands together in delight as Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has unveiled a slew for new titles coming to the head-mounted display (HMD), which includes Skyrim VRThe announcements haven’t stopped there, not shown during the pre-E3 press conference, CCP Games has just confirmed that it’s multiplayer sports experience Sparc will be launching first for SIE’s headset.

Sparc is a skill-based, physical sport, where two players use PlayStation Move motion controllers to aim and throw projectiles at each other inside a virtual arena, all the while defending themselves by dodging, blocking, or deflecting incoming attacks from their opponent.

Sparc includes multiple two-player game modes where players can compete against their friends or find challengers via online matchmaking. Additionally, a selection of single-player challenges and training modes are included, plus a wide range of customization and personalization options for competitors.

“We have been exploring various aspects of VR over the past four years and pushed into new, exciting territories,” said Hilmar Pétursson, CEO of CCP Games in a statement. “Out of one of those explorations, we found this amazing, central nervous system-unlocking experience that really feels like a solid next step towards the next generation of virtual reality experiences. As our first release outside of the EVE universe, I’m really looking forward to seeing how people react to this level of innovation.”

“With Sparc, we’ve set out to deliver an original sport for the current generation of VR hardware,” said Morgan Godat, executive producer at CCP Games’ Atlanta studio. “We want to create plasma-clad sporting champions in living rooms via the virtual court, where challengers will meet and compete with other players from around the world.”

Sparc will exclusively launch for PlayStation VR in Q3 2017. CCP Games hasn’t stated how long this exclusivity will last, but the title will be coming to HTC Vive and Oculus Rift in the future.

PlayStation VR Bundle Deals Arrive Ahead of E3 Reveals

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) is expected to make a wealth of announcements regarding the PlayStation VR at a press conference later today, prior to a playable outing at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Los Angeles. The retail industry has obviously taken note of this, offer a number of discounted PlayStation VR bundles to tempt you into a new purchase at the crest of the new announcement hype.

Farpoint screenshotThe pre-E3 press conference from SIE is set to take place at 11pm BST/3pm PST today, and a huge number of new PlayStation VR titles are expected to be revealed. Previously announced titles such as Golem, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown and GT Sport are also expected to make a return to the limelight, along with rumours of brand new virtual reality (VR) experiences from Sony Santa Monica and Bethesda Softworks.

For those who’ve been waiting for this second wave of videogame titles to be revealed, there’s never been a better time to purchase that PlayStation VR head-mounted display (HMD). The official suggested retail price (SRP) of £349.99 GBP is greatly discounted in these bundles, including value add-ins of videogames and even the PlayStation Camera.

The best value bundle, offered via Amazon.co.uk, includes the PlayStation VR itself, the hugely popular Farpoint, DriveClub VR and a PlayStation Camera for just £349.99. Another offers Farpoint with the HMD for the same price, or Resident Evil 7 biohazard for the slightly higher price of £357.60. Additional bundles see the PlayStation VR packaged with a carrying case for £347.28 or PlayStation VR Worlds for £348.10.

Resident Evil 7 - FamilyIt should be noted that none of these packages are official bundles distributed by SIE, instead compiled by retailers themselves. If SIE intend on readdressing the value package of the PlayStation VR it’s possible that we could see such an announcement at the press conference later today. VRFocus will of course keep you updated with all the latest details direct from the show.

Sony Sells 1 Million PlayStation VR’s, Calls it ‘a good start’

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) launched its PlayStation VR head-mounted display (HMD) for PlayStation 4 back in October 2016 and today revealed the device has achieved one million sales worldwide, but stopped short of calling it a success, rather ‘a good start’.

As SIE regularly tends to do, its released a new report on hardware sales. PlayStation 4 has sold almost 60 million units reports the company, and since November one in five consoles have been the new PlayStation 4 Pro. With PlayStation VR, although those sales figures are better than rivals Oculus Rift and HTC Vive – no official figures have been released but estimates in February put them at 243,000 and 420,000 respectively – SIE is still downplaying the achievement.

PlayStation global sales and marketing head Jim Ryan has said its “intrigued” with PlayStation VR’s current positioning, reports Business Insider, but with an install base of nearly 60 million that one million figure is fairly small. “We would not describe one million units the same as mass adoption,” said Ryan. “But we would call it a good start.”

With E3 next week expect to see some big announcements from the company in regards to VR and future content – VRFocus has listed five titles to keep an eye on – alongside Microsoft and several others, (plus Oculus won’t be there).

SIE will also be running a “Days of Play” promotion from 9th – 17th June 2017, which is due to feature big reductions on PlayStation software and hardware. A limited edition gold-colored PlayStation 4 console, which will sell for $249 USD, will also be released at the same time.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of PlayStation VR, reporting back with the latest announcements.

Breaking Bad VR Experience in the Works for PlayStation VR

Popular AMC series Breaking Bad  may have finished several years ago but that hasn’t stopped the show’s creator Vince Gilligan plans for further content based on the idea. Recently it’s been revealed that Gilligan as been working with Sony and PlayStation VR on an immersive virtual reality (VR) experience.

Currently details on the project hard to come by, although its been rumoured it won’t be styled as an actual videogame and isn’t due for release this year.

“Recently you may have seen Vince Gilligan, the show runner for Breaking Bad, has leaked some information that we’re working together, which we are, in bringing a Breaking Bad experience to virtual reality.” When asked what that might involve: “I have no idea, but Vince has shown that he can deliver,” said Shawn Layden, President & CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America (SIEA) and Chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios, reports TIME.

PlayStation VR Group shot

While Andrew House, global chief executive of SIE said to Variety: “We set up a day at our campus where we brought seven of the best show runners [Sony Pictures Television] work with, like David Shore of ‘The Blacklist’ and Ron Moore, who did ‘Battlestar Galactica,’ Vince and some other folks. And they just played around with VR. Several of them were intrigued, but Vince was the one who said, ‘I really want to do something with this. I want to experiment with this.’”

So the likelihood is that it’ll be content geared towards 360-degree video rather than a full VR experience. As so little has been revealed it’ll be interesting to see if any of the original cast will be making an appearance or whether it’ll be an off-shoot to introduce different characters – fans will obviously be keen to have Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) return.

VRFocus will be at E3 2017, so as details are announced stay tuned for all the updates.

Sony’s UK Job Listings Indicate Company’s Dedication to PlayStation VR

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) is highly dedicated to PlayStation 4 – namely due to it being profitable – but is that the same for PlayStation VR? Look around online and you’ll obviously find virtual reality (VR) naysayers reporting that the company has lost interest in the head-mounted display (HMD), as it does have a chequered past regarding peripherals. Well according to just UK-based job listings alone this summation is quite off the mark.

Firstly, lets pull some numbers. Out of the big three headsets, Oculus Rift,  HTC Vive and PlayStation VR, sales figures are in the region of 243,000, 420,000 and 915,000 respectively – although the first two are SuperData Research estimates as no official figures have been released. Even so that’s still a massive headway considering the PlayStation VR only launched in October, six months after the other two. Just on that alone you’d be confused as to why SIE would be loosing interest in promoting the headset.

PlayStationVR_130906_3

There have been stock issues worldwide which will have caused a slow down in sales – but that’s SIE’s own fault – an issue that now looks to be rectified with a recent company statement saying: “PlayStation VR has been in high demand since launch, and we have heard from many of you that it has been a bit tricky to find on store shelves. We’ve been working to meet demand and are happy to report that PS VR is back in stock at many retailers in the US and Canada.”

So that’s good in the short term but what about PlayStation VR’s future? Well VRFocus‘ regular The VR Job Hub – which went out earlier today – had several listings for VR related jobs for Sony London Studio. London Studio was the developer behind The London Heist, and back in September announced a swath of redundancies after completing the project. Now, not only is the studio hiring for an unnamed VR title, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s (SCEE’s) R&D department has seven positions available and a newly formed Manchester-based studio has three vacancies.

So while the studio positions indicate two possible first-party experiences are in the works, the SCEE R&D jobs give an idea to further improvements for the PlayStation VR system as a whole. Under the ‘responsibilities’ section on a couple of the engineer vacancies for example, the posting stipulates: “Rapid investigation, prototyping and implementation of new systems, along with any required testing,” and if the applicant has: “Experience of console development, preferably on PlayStation 4,” that would be advantageous.

It would be easy to jump to conclusions that these R&D vacancies point to possible development of a new headset, but its more likely to aid in the ecosystem as a whole. What they do prove however is that Sony is still very much focused on the PlayStation VR platform and hopefully next month’s E3 event in Los Angeles will include plenty of VR news from the company.

VRFocus will be at E3 2017 so stay tuned for the latest PlayStation VR announcements.

It’s all Gone Psychedelic in VRFocus’ Polybius Gameplay Video

A few days ago Llamasoft, the developer behind Tempest 2000 and TxK, launched its first virtual reality (VR) title for PlayStation VR, Polybius and today VRFocus has some gameplay footage for you to enjoy.

Offering 120 FPS and up to 4K resolution, Polybius is an 80’s infused, neon rich, trance-shooter, where players control a small spaceship that hurtles down a course shooting everything in its path. The aim being to build as big a multiplier as possible with successive kills for a ridiculously highscore.

As the video below shows, the videogame eases players into the simple gameplay mechanics of collecting point scoring items, while shooting anything and everything in sight. That easy start soon disappears as speed is built up, creating a psychedelic, visually overloading avalanche of polygons, light and sound – which Llamasoft’s previous titles were known for.

Levels switch between flat plains, to tunnels, to hurtling down tube shaped levels and more, all swathed in as much colour as you could possibly imagine.

Comeback each day for another VR gameplay video from VRFocus.

Sony Release TV Trailer for PlayStation VR and Farpoint, More Retail Stock Now Available

There’s only a couple of weeks to go until Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE’s) next major release for PlayStation VR arrives, Farpoint. Prior to launch on 16th May, SIE has today revealed a new TV trailer promoting the title alongside the confirmation of more retail stock for US consumers.

Via the US PlayStation.blog, the company has showcased a preview of the trailer set to air later this week as part of its ‘Two Worlds’ campaign. Starting with a bloke putting on a PlayStation VR in his basement he then finds himself transported to an uncharted alien world filled with all manner of enemies.

There’s even better news for US customers eager to get their hands on the head-mounted display (HMD). The hard to find device is now becoming more widely available as SIE catch up on replenishing retail stock. In a statement the company said: “PlayStation VR has been in high demand since launch, and we have heard from many of you that it has been a bit tricky to find on store shelves. We’ve been working to meet demand and are happy to report that PS VR is back in stock at many retailers in the US and Canada.”

And while there’s some time to kill in between PlayStation VR has plenty of other titles available, including the well received Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Statik, DiRT Rally, Psychonauts: The Rhombus of Ruin, EVE: Valkyrie and many more. Then towards the end of this month there’s Star Trek: Bridge Crew, and Gran Turismo Sport later in the year.

Checkout the trailer below, and for further PlayStation VR announcements, keep reading VRFocus.
