Sony Announces PlayStation Press Conference for Paris Games Week

While Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) had a massive presence at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in June, with a pre-event press conference that had quite a few announcements, this month’s Gamescom isn’t looking as promising. That might be due to SIE’s announcement that it’ll be returning to Paris Games Week in October, with a media showcase on Monday, 30th October.

The company chose not to hold a press conference during 2016’s event, so with it’s return for 2017 there could be some big reveals coming. Of course SIE will be keeping tight lipped about what they might be, hopefully though PlayStation VR will get a mention at some point.

With the headset currently leading the high-end segment of the consumer VR industry, well ahead of Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, SIE has a lot to shout about. There’s also the fact that in October PlayStation VR will be celebrating its first anniversary, and as its two rivals made a fairly big deal of their first birthdays, SIE will likely do the same.

The media showcase will start at 4pm GMT, 5pm Paris time, 12pm EST or 9am PST. Naturally VRFocus will be reporting the event, so you can catch up with all the VR news here.

PlayStation Experience Southeast Asia Will Cover VR

The PlayStation Experience Southeast Asia is due to take place tomorrow, 5th August, 2017 in Malaysia. It will be the first event on its kind held in the region, and will feature presentations and hands-on sessions of upcoming titles for attendees. At least two of the showcased titles will be virtual reality (VR) enabled – Monster of the Deep: Final Fantasy XV and Gran Turismo Sport.

Monster of the Deep: Final Fantasy XV is a spin-off of successful RPG Final Fantasy XV and expands upon the fishing min-game that was part of the title’s extensive gameplay. Monster of the Deep: Final Fantasy XV adds extra mechanics and lots of new creatures to encounter and attempt to catch, some of whom are truly terrifying monsters suitable for a Final Fantasy title.

Gran Turismo Sport is the latest entry in developer Polyphony Digital’s long-running driving simulator series, and for the first time is set to feature VR compatibility, with 1 vs 1 races viewable through the PlayStation VR, with well-known car brands rendered in lovingly detailed high-resolution 3D.

The PlayStation Experience Southeast Asia will have as one of its main features Game Stage events, where developers and representatives will present their titles on stage to the crowd. Polyphony Digital CEO Kazunori Yamauchi will be presenting Gran Turismo Sport, while Final Fantasy XV: Monster of the Deep’s presentation will be done by Lead Designer of Final Fantasy XV, Wan Hazmer. Presentations on Monster Hunter: World and Marvel vs Capcom Infinite are also expected.

Attendees at the event will also have a chance to win exclusive raffle prizes such as a PlayStation 4 Pro and PlayStation VR.

VRFocus will continue to report on events relating to VR.

Gran Turismo Sport’s VR Mode Will Be Limited, But Still Offer Racing Thrills

We’ve known for some time that Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE) Gran Turismo Sport would launch with PlayStation VR compatibility, but to what degree has remained a mystery. That has now changed, with SIE committing to offering a virtual reality (VR) mode at the launch of Gran Turismo Sport later this year.

gran turismo sport screenshot 1While expectations of full compatibility may be a bit far fetched, it appears that Gran Turismo Sport’s VR mode may be more limited than that of the popular Driveclub VR. According to SIE, the included VR Drive mode will offer only 1 vs. 1 races. An update to the Gran Turismo Sport page on the official Gran Turimso website reads:

“The game is compatible with the PS VR, providing the user a 360 degree 3D environment to experience. There is a dedicated VR Drive mode in the Arcade Mode where you can drive one on one races as though you are really sitting in the driver seat, surrounded by a real car interior. [sic]”

Gran Turismo Sport will launch exclusively for PlayStation 4 in October 2017, and VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest details on the included VR Drive gameplay mode.

Tomorrow Vertigo Games and Jaywalkers Interactive release the title for Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE) headset and there’s a new trailer to celebrate.

Kizumonogatari VR Coming to PlayStation VR for Free in Japan

Last month VRFocus reported that the trilogy of Kizumonogatari films would be getting a virtual reality (VR) tie-in with  Kizumonogatari VR coming to Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE) PlayStation VR. Today, Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia (SIEJA), Aniplex, and Kayac have announced the experience will launch for free in Japan via the PlayStation Store.

The creation of the VR content is to celebrate the release of the third film on blu-ray and DVD, giving PlayStation VR owners the opportunity to look back over the films with lead character Kiss-shot Acerola-orion Heart-under-blade.

Kizumonogatari_VR_screenshot

Kizumonogatari – or ‘Wounded Story’ in English, follows the story of vampires living in Tokyo, with Kiss-shot Acerola-orion Heart-under-blade as one of the central characters. A popular novel in Japan by Takeshi Nisio, Kizumonogatari’s main character is Japanese high school student Koyomi Araragi, who finds himself embroiled in a tale of vampires and vampire hunters.

Kizumonogatari VR set to launch on 12th July 2017 for Japanese customers. As you might expect there’s no word on a western release at present. If that does happen VRFocus will keep you informed.

Sony Held Back on PlayStation VR Marketing Because of Supply Issues

It has been reported before on VRFocus that executives at Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) were somewhat taken aback by the success of the PlayStation VR headset, despite much speculation on the reasons for this, part of it may have to do with how SIE marketed the product – or rather, how they didn’t market the product.

In an interview with Kinda Funny Games hosted by GameSpot, President of Sony Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida shed some light on what Sony’s strategy was for the PlayStation VR, revealing that the company had been deliberately taken a less aggressive marketing strategy for the PlayStation VR, due to anxiety about supply and demand.

“We’ve been holding back,” he explained. “Our marketing and sales teams have been holding back promoting the system because we didn’t have enough units. But going forward, because we have enough units moving into the retailers, we will restart promoting the system and games coming up.”

PlayStation VR Group shot

The PlayStation VR reached a sales figured of 1 million in early June, with PlayStation Marketing head Jim Ryan calling the figure ‘A good start’. It was revealed earlier in the year that SIE executives were cautious about the PlayStation VR, despite enthusiasm from the marketing team. There were also problems with supply lines resulting from a shortage of components for the OLED display. A combination of factors that led to shortages of PlayStation VR headsets on store shelves, particularly in Japan.

The shortages meant that the prices for second-hand PlayStation VR headsets took a large jump, sometimes ending up at double the original retail price. In Japan, re-stocks of PlayStation VR headsets resulted in queues forming of consumers eager to get their hands on one.

The interview with Shuhei Yoshida indicated that now that SIE has sufficient units available to supply retailers with, a big marketing push should new be expected, especially considering the new games recently announced at E3.

VRFocus will continue to bring you news on the PlayStation VR and other headsets.

Preview: Star Child – A Playful Neon Puzzler With Potential

Playful Corp has already cemented its name in the virtual reality (VR) industry with its cute platformer Luckey’s Tale which launched alongside the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD). For its next VR title the studio is sticking with those platformer roots with Star Child, a neon drenched sci-fi adventure for PlayStation VR.

Unveiled during Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE) Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2017 press conference with a brief teaser trailer, Playful has shown a very early demo at the event, giving a hint at the rich universe it intends to create.

Star Child Screenshot

Star Child seems to be a homage to classic side-scrolling platformers of yesteryear (the 90s and early 00s), enriched with the dynamic depth and immersion of VR. Playing a female protagonist, you run and jump through a world that encourages you to lean in and explore. While the character can only move left and right, you can still peer in and see into this beautiful looking world, so much so that you can even look down the path your character is following.

The demo felt very much like an opening level – a common occurrence with these short presentations – with a short cinematic of a spaceship flying in and landing on an elevator that takes you deep into an alien world. As it descends deeper and deeper you get to see all sorts of luminous creatures scurrying across the walls, and glowing plants creeping up the rock face. Playful has really gone to town on the design of Star Child, easily differentiating it from the far more child like design of Luckey’s Tale.

At this stage the character doesn’t have a great deal of options available, boiling down to running and jumping through the area. What Star Child did offer were a couple of puzzles. With these you approach a console which then activates a giant purple orb. This can then be moved around the area, bobbing it higher with multiple presses of the X button to grab a purple neon string that needs to be attached to a certain point, opening up the next area. The next puzzle offered more of the same, as an early challenge you’d expect it to be easy but it was somewhat rudimentary in nature.

Star Child Screenshot

It all came to an end with a big finale. A really big, robotic looking, spider monster came out of the darkness seeming very intent on doing some harm. Luckily a saviour was slumbering, waiting for the right time to come to your aid, an even bigger robot, whose hand you jump onto ending the demo. Naturally, this raises more questions than revealing answers, what’s the robot for? Do you get to pilot/control it in some way? What the hell is going on? And so on.

If the videogame caught your eye during SIE’s E3 2017 press conference – after the massive Skyrim announcement – then you’re right to be intrigued. The Star Child demo was certainly a delightful experience, and over far too soon, so expect good things to come in the future.

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) didn’t disappoint for its Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2017 press conference. The event saw numerous virtual reality (VR) experiences announced for the PlayStation VR, from cute and cuddly adventures to frantic shooters and fantasy epics. If you missed any of them VRFocus has created a handy video run though so you can see it all for yourself – either again or for the first time.

So what was shown? Well if you weren’t keeping up with proceedings the biggest news of the night really goes to Bethesda’s The Eldar Scrolls V: Skyrim VR which the studio didn’t mention during its press conference so the videogame may just be exclusive to SIE.

Then there’s Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XV: Monster of the Deepwhich bizarrely is a fishing experience. Or you’ve a got Moss, delightful puzzle adventure featuring a mouse called Quill. For those sci-fi fans out there you’ve got Star Childfrom Lucky’s Tale developer Playful. Lastly there was a double whammy from Supermassive Games – the studio behind Until Dawn – with Bravo Team and The Inpatient. The former is a military first-person shooter (FPS) while the latter is a prequel to Until Dawn.

VRFocus will be at E3 2017 all week, so check back everyday for the latest VR news.

Farpoint’s ‘Cryo Pack’ DLC Will be Free

Earlier today VRFocus reported that PlayStation VR first-person shooter (FPS) Farpoint would be getting its first DLC later this month called ‘Cyro Pack’. Now Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has begun its pre-Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2017 press conference, announcing that the DLC will be free to download for players.

Due to arrive on 27th June 2017, the Cyro Pack DLC will feature a brand new icy world – a polar opposite to the desert location of the main videogame. Additionally, there will also be a two-player co-op as well as challenge levels to test players shooting skills.

SIE held a smaller showcase prior to the main press conference letting press see what titles the company would be demoing on the show floor of E3. These included  No Heroes Allowed! VR and Legion Commanderboth from developers based in Japan and China respectively, Gran Turismo Sport, Archangel by Skydance Interactive, Futurlab’s slot racer Tiny Trax, and ROM: Extraction from First Contact which originally released on Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

As the press conference continues VRFocus will bring you all the latest PlayStation VR news from the event.
