Sociable Soccer Coming Soon to Steam Early Access

Many fans of sports videogames have been eagerly awaiting to arrival of Legendary British developer’s Jon Hare’s latest foray into the world of Football videogames, Sociable Soccer. The wait is almost over, however, as the title will be released for Steam Early Access on 12th October.

Jon Hare was famed through the 16-bit era for producing titles such as Microprose Soccer and the influential Sensible World of Soccer and its sequels. Sociable Soccer is a virtual reality (VR) spiritual successor to the Sensible Soccer titles, bringing the stripped down, arcade-style gameplay back to an area of videogaming that has become somewhat stagnant.

The Steam Early Access version of the title will feature a single player campaign mode along with classic local multiplayer and online multiplayer. An online team mode is being developed and should be available in a future update. Sensible Soccer is planned to feature over 1,000 clubs and national teams from around the world, along with 67 international football trophies available to compete for.

“We’re hugely excited to be launching on Steam Early Access. This is the first step towards our vision of a new, truly cross-platform, online and offline football action game,” said Hare, also referencing the console, mobile and various VR platforms to follow. “Steam Early Access will help us to tweak gameplay, introduce more game modes and respond to fan feedback.”

The Steam Early Access version will be available for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. A price point has yet to be set. The title is also planned to be released on Samsung Gear VR and PlayStation VR, though a release date has not yet been confirmed.

A teaser trailer for the Steam Early Access version is available to view below.

Screenshots and Goal Shots From Sociable Soccer

Those who are old enough to remember the 8-bit era of videogames might remember a football title called Sensible Soccer and its various sequels. Much beloved by fans of sports videogames, the series is being reincarnated in virtual reality (VR) with spiritual successor Sociable Soccer.

The essence of Sociable Soccer is to return sports videogaming to its roots, eschewing more modern touches such as facial mapping and the automatic systems that have becomes a large part of franchises such as the FIFA series. Instead, player skill is placed front and centre. Players will need to learn how to control and handle the ball, how to play tactically and how to wait and watch for the opportunity to score the perfect goal.

The title is planned for release on Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR and PlayStation VR. Sociable Soccer is due to be released on Steam Early Access very soon, Though the VR version is unlikely to be available in the Early Access version on launch, the VR version is expected to launch on all planned VR platforms early next year.

Preview: Sociable Soccer – Football’s Coming Home to VR

The imminent arrival of Sociable Soccer on Steam Early Access has been met with an enthusiastic response. The spiritual successor to the hugely popular 16-bit era Sensible Soccer, Sociable Soccer is designed to deliver the football videogame that FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer are shying away from; a sturdy experience born less of automated flash and more of player skill.

Sociable Soccer screenshotIn VRFocus’ most recent hands-on, this was clearly evident. Sociable Soccer harks back to the day when tutorial systems and face-mapping weren’t even a dream in the developer’s minds, and instead the core gameplay has to be rock solid. Sociable Soccer is a videogame that demands the player knows how to control the ball, how to tactically push forward and how to retreat when necessary.

The standard 2D monitor version of Sociable Soccer shown to VRFocus at Gamescom 2017, Cologne, appeared to be in good shape. Significant improvements in visual design and AI were immediately evident, but also advances in the tightness of the player control and selection were important revisions. A number of other statistical additions – numbers of teams, players and leagues in addition to many others – were also touted, but not available for evaluation in such a short demonstration.

However, the Samsung Gear VR version of Sociable Soccer hadn’t changed much since VRFocus last had the opportunity to get hands-on with the videogame. Tower Studios was honest with their desire to get the Steam Early Access edition of Sociable Soccer prepared prior to launch before returning to the virtual reality (VR) versions of the videogame, which is understandable, and promised that the studio would strive for parity between the 2D and VR editions of the videogame across all formats.

Sociable Soccer screenshotEven without the updates seen in the 2D versions, Sociable Soccer presents an appealing case for a traditional football videogame in VR. Taking the viewpoint of a cameraman on the sideline, the panning of the player’s camera is controlled by their own head and, as lead designer Jon Hare rightfully stated, the player’s eyeline will naturally follow the ball just as with watching a live football match in the stands.

Despite the disappointment of little progress being made with the VR edition of Sociable Soccer, the evidence of significant improvement in the 2D version has left VRFocus wanting more. Sociable Soccer is a return to basics for football videogames, and any fan of the genre in the 16-bit era will be calling for just that. Sociable Soccer is set to launch for VR formats – now including PlayStation VR – early next year, and VRFocus will bring you more details on the progress of the title as soon as they’re available.

Sociable Soccer Heading to PlayStation VR

Sociable Soccer is heading to Steam Early Access very soon. The initial PC build of the videogame available to purchase prior to the official release will tease players with the core experience with much more content to follow. However, at Gamescom 2017, Cologne, lead designer Jon Hare revealed intentions to bring the videogame to PlayStation 4 including PlayStation VR compatibility.

Sociable Soccer screenshotSociable Soccer is the spiritual successor to the 1990s smash hit, Sensible Soccer, a videogame that boils down the essence of virtual football, stripping away all of the modern flourishes and instead offering an experience that relies on player skill. This was evident even in the early build that VRFocus experienced on both Samsung Gear VR and Oculus Rift.

The fact that Sociable Soccer will also be coming to HTC Vive should not be a surprise, given that the videogame has already been demonstrated as a PC virtual reality (VR) title on Oculus Rift. However, Hare also confirmed to VRFocus that Sociable Soccer would make its way to PlayStation VR.

“We’ve got [Sociable Soccer] running on really smoothly on all sorts of VR headsets,” stated Hare in an interview with VRFocus. “Currently it’s working on Gear VR, [Oculus] Rift and also HTC Vive. We’ve got PlayStation VR dev kits just arrived into the office so it’ll be on there very soon.”

Sociable Soccer screenshotHare did note that the team at Tower Studios has only recently received PlayStation VR development kits, and as such it will be several months until the studio is ready to publicly demonstrate the PlayStation 4 edition of the videogame. However, Hare hopes that we could see a release of the title in early 2018. VRFocus will of course keep you updated with all the latest details on the VR edition of Sociable Soccer.

Sociable Soccer Heading to Steam Early Access

Tower Studios in partnership with Finnish studio Combo Breaker has announced that Sociable Soccer will launch in summer 2017 on Steam Early Access with Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and mobile platforms to follow. Sociable Soccer has also been confirmed for Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR; however no date is currently in sight for the virtual reality (VR) editions of the videogame.

Sociable Soccer screenshotSociable Soccer is the spiritual successor to Sensible Soccer, a 1990’s classic series which saw multiple releases on Amiga, Atari ST, Amiga CD32, Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Game Boy, SEGA Mega Drive, Atari Jaguar, SEGA Mega-CD, SEGA Game Gear, SEGA Master System, Acorn Archimedes and many more formats. VRFocus has been hands on with both the Samsung Gear VR and Oculus Rift editions of Sociable Soccer.

Sociable Soccer is a super quick, adrenaline soaked football action game, an unholy alliance of Guardiola’s tiki taka and Klopp’s gegenpressing, where ultra sharp passing and shooting can easily be thwarted by a well timed slide tackle… something like Rocket League in boots”, said Jon Hare, Designer and Director of Sociable Soccer. “After nearly two years in development we are excited to be launching soon on Steam Early Access. The game has a whole world of soccer already in place and online and offline matches are playing like a dream. As we sprint towards full commercial launch in late 2017 we invite gamers and football lovers to become part of our game changing, new sports franchise as we add new features, game modes and updates every few weeks”.

Sociable Soccer promises to deliver easy-to-play yet hard to master gameplay, with single player, local multiplayer, online multiplayer and manager modes all supported. No specific release date has been announced for the Steam Early Access edition of Sociable Soccer, but you can find out more at the official Steam Store page for the videogame. VRFocus will of course keep you updated with all the latest details on the VR editions of Sociable Soccer.
