Preview: Sniper Elite VR – Sights are Perfectly Set

Rebellion’s Sniper Elite series is a fairly iconic franchise, sending players back in time to World War 2 to sneak around battlefields and war-torn cities picking off enemies with precision accuracy. The prospect of a virtual reality (VR) version was certainly an exciting one when the studio revealed development plans a few months ago. With the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2019 taking place this week Rebellion brought a very early, pre-alpha build along for attendees to demo, and VRFocus can confirm it’s already looking good.

Sniper Elite VR

Generally when a studio pre-warns that a build is very early – possibly too early for demonstration – VRFocus usually expects to find a bug filled experience that’s extremely rough around the edges. This just wasn’t the case when it came to Sniper Elite VR, actually surprising how comfortable and smooth the 10-minute demo in fact was.

Demoed using PlayStation VR, Sniper Elite VR fully utilises the PlayStation Aim controller and felt like a natural fit for the videogame. Rebellion has confirmed the title will also support PlayStation Move and DualShock 4 – as well as the relevant controllers on other headsets like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive – but for a first-person shooter (FPS) like Sniper Elite VR having a gun peripheral certainly helps that sense of immersion.

The brief demo featured a sequence involving a roadblock in an Italian town, with enemy forces tending to control most of the lower ground with a few sporadically place higher up. Naturally, as a sniper the gameplay involved being positioned on the top of walls or in the remains of attics, peering out through roof debris. Visually, the environment was suitably packed with details, crumbling houses, destroyed vehicles, bomb craters and more. This once peaceful, idyllic town was now a battlefield and impressively felt so.

Sniper Elite VR E3 2019Movement was completely free locomotion, offering wide-ranging options as to where to place yourself when firing off a few shots. Crouching behind walls or steel sheets, after one shot the enemy forces soon know your location, making subsequent shots all the more difficult.

If you’ve ever played any of the Sniper Elite series then the VR version will feel right at home, just even more realistic. Popping heads – where else are you going to aim for? – isn’t too difficult yet made all the easier thanks to a focus mode which zooms in that little bit further whilst painting a red diamond around the enemy’s head.

But this wouldn’t be Sniper Elite if there weren’t the X-Ray Kill Cam sequences. They are well and truly in there and are even more brutal (and satisfying than ever). Rebellion was keen to ensure these sequences weren’t jarring in any way, and seem to have effectively done so. The X-Ray Kill Cam actives randomly, pulling you out of the first-person character viewpoint and into a brief close up for a couple of seconds, all very smooth and suitably graphic.

From start to finish Sniper Elite VR certainly impressed, from the gun handling to the movement and visual design. It honestly didn’t feel as early in development as Rebellion was claiming it was, which certainly bodes well for the final product. Sniper Elite VR is definitely on VRFocus’ list for top VR titles of E3 2019.

UploadVR E3 2019: Best Of Show And People’s Choice VR Game Award

E3 2019 is all but over at this point. We kicked off the week with our massive E3 VR Showcase, a first of its kind deluge of amazing VR game reveals, announcements, and interviews that shined a spotlight on what’s coming over the next several months to VR headsets. And while that was packed full of lots of great stuff, only a fraction of it was actually playable at E3 itself.

Now that we’ve played all the games at the show this year and seen what companies have to offer, we’ve decided to round up our list of nominees for Best of Show in VR at E3 2019 as well as let our community on Twitter pick their winner for the People’s Choice Award. You can see the results for yourself right here.

People’s Choice VR Game Award E3 2019 Winner

Asgard’s Wrath

To be honest, if you watched the poll results coming in over time, it was never really a question which game would win. The excitement for Asgard’s Wrath, the 30+ hour action-adventure RPG epic from Sanzaru Games and Oculus, is through the roof. Prior to E3 kicking off we debuted 20 minutes of all-new gameplay and we included an interview in our E3 VR showcase with lots of insight and details into the game.

You can read my latest impressions on the game here or my GDC impressions focused on its amazing combat for more details, but suffice it to say that my Zelda and Elder Scrolls loving heart is supremely excited for a massive adventure like this to hit Rift later this year.

We restricted these awards to games that were physically present and playable at E3 itself.

E3 2019 Best Of Show VR Game Award Nominees

Asgard’s Wrath
Espire.1
Fujii
Lone Echo 2
Phantom: Covert Ops
Sniper Elite VR

E3 2019 Best Of Show VR Game Award Winner

Espire.1

Even though Oculus brought out the big guns this E3 with a ton of great looking exclusive titles like Lone Echo 2, Asgard’s Wrath, and Stormland, none of them stood out as much as Espire.1 did. This E3 we got the chance to play Espire.1 on both Rift S and Quest and even though there were obvious graphical differences, the game played pretty much exactly the same which is extremely impressive.

Espire.1 is a stealth action game in the same vein as Metal Gear Solid that puts you in the shoes of a stealth android that sneaks through levels, climbs on any metal surface, and uses a litany of weapons to get past guards and enemies. You also have the ability to slow down time, look around corners using wrist-based cameras, and even detect enemies in the level by activating the button on the side of your visor. All of that ambitious design coalesces into a smooth, exciting VR game that innovates not only in terms of building a stealth shooter for VR, but also in terms of comfort options for players.

For those reasons we’re awarding Espire.1 as our Best of Show VR game at E3 2019. It releases for Rift, Vive, PSVR, and Quest in August of this year.

E3 2019: Sniper Elite VR Turned Me Into A Deadly Sharpshooter

E3 2019: Sniper Elite VR Turned Me Into A Deadly Sharpshooter

Rebellion, the same company behind VR games like Battlezone and Arca’s Path, are back with a VR take on their popular non-VR shooter franchise in the form of Sniper Elite VR. As the name suggests in the Sniper Elite games you play as a sniper that’s armed with a long-range scoped rifle and you must take out enemies from a distance.

Sniper Elite VR was my very first demo appointment of E3 2019 and the team at Rebellion told me that I was the first person outside of the company to ever try the game. Luckily I put on a good show completing the demo level without dying and hitting on 80% of my shots — not too bad!

You can watch the interview above for more insight into the game’s development. My demo was played on a PSVR using the PS Aim Controller, but we’ve been told that the game will be perfectly playable on DualShock 4 or with the PS Move controllers as well. Plus it’s not a PS4 exclusive so it’ll be coming out on Oculus Home, Viveport, and SteamVR as well.

Using the PS Aim Controller in Sniper Elite VR felt great. Actually cradling the back of the peripheral in my shoulder as I aimed down the sights was natural and translated to the game extremely well. All those hours of playing Farpoint and Firewall Zero Hour are starting to pay off.

While the concept of building an entire game around being a sniper could sound a bit boring, that’s not the case at all here. For starters, Rebellion drops you into large maps that encourage you to explore and move around to various vantage points. Sniper Elite VR will offer both smooth stick movement or teleportation if needed, as well as other comfort options. Plus, there’s the iconic slow-motion x-ray vision death cam that the series has become so well-known for.

Sometimes when you get a killshot on an enemy the game will slow down, teleport your view over to the enemy, and show the x-ray vision view of what the bullet looks like entering the body. You can see blood splattering everyone, bones and organs exploding, and just some of the most gruesome visuals that feel incredibly realistic. It might make some people a bit queasy in a VR headset though, so that feature can be turned off if you’d prefer.

I only got to see one short level during my demo since this is an early build, but they’re designing Sniper Elite VR to be a strictly single player experience. Stats at the end were detailed with a ranking system so leaderboards seem likely, as does replayability on missions to get better ratings. It would be nice to see specific secondary challenge objectives as well on each mission, similar to Robo Recall.

Since my demo was only on PSVR I can’t speak to what it feels like to play the game on other platforms, but if you’ve ever held a two-handed gun in a VR game before then you know what to expect here too basically.

As of now there is no release date set for Sniper Elite VR, but it will be coming to PSVR, Rift, Vive, and Windows VR headsets for sure. When prompted, Assistant Head of Design Steve Bristow said a Quest version is being considered for the future as well.

Let us know what you think down in the comments below!

First Trailer for Sniper Elite VR Drops at E3 2019

It’s the first day of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2019 and Rebellion has begun revealing details regarding   Sniper Elite VR. First revealed back in March alongside a bunch of announcements regarding the Sniper Elite franchise, Rebellion has released the first trailer for the upcoming title.

Sniper Elite VR

Sniper Elite VR has been developed in partnership with Just Add Water, taking players to Italy during World War 2. Set prior to the events of Sniper Elite 4, the VR experience will feature a brand new story for fans of the franchise to enjoy.

A pure single-player experience, you fight for the Italian resistance to rid Sicily of the Nazi U-boat menace, taking on missions across brand new Italian maps. With an array of authentic World War 2 weaponry to hand including sub-machine guns and pistols (not just sniper rifles), you’ll have complete freedom of movement to employ stealth and tactics as you see fit.

The series is known for its realistic bullet physics and those same features will return in Sniper Elite VR. As will the iconic X-Ray Kill Cam sequences which showcase some brutal deaths. These have been entirely rebuilt for the VR version Rebellion has confirmed.

Sniper Elite VR - PSVR

Initially confirmed for PlayStation VR with support for both PlayStation Move and PlayStation Aim controllers, Sniper Elite VR will also support Oculus Rift and HTC Vive headsets, available through SteamVR and Viveport.

As the trailer showcases Sniper Elite VR will be completely in first-person, and not on-rails (the segment shown using PlayStation Aim demonstrates teleportation mechanics). Environments include airstrips, underground bunkers, and picturesque Italian villages.

Even though the studio is famous for the Sniper Elite series, when it comes to VR Rebellion made a significant impact back in 2016 with the release of Battlezone. Since then the studio also helped to publish Dream Reality Interactive’s stylish puzzle title Arca’s Path last year.

Rebellion hasn’t suggested when a launch window may occur, but during E3 2019 this week the studio will be giving select attendees a chance to go hands-on with the title. VRFocus will, of course, be one of those, so look out for our coverage later in the week.

E3 2019: Sniper Elite VR Gets New Trailer, PSVR, Rift, SteamVR Support Confirmed

Sniper Elite VR New

Hope you like Sniper Elite! Why? Well, because we have a new trailer for it, why else?

Well we say trailer, it’s more like a feature. There’s just a bit of gameplay, blurred and captured off of the TV. Developers at Rebellion fill in the blanks with new info, though.

Sniper Elite is exactly what it says in the tin. With rifle in hand, you take down high profile targets from afar. In this installment, you travel to Italy in World War 2 in a story set before Sniper Elite 4. You join the Italian resistance and fight to liberate Sicily. Crucially the game keeps the stealth element of the other titles and features free movement.

The other thing the game’s best known for? Gory kills. Sniper Elite lets you watch your bullet fly into enemy skulls and then get an unnecessarily detailed x-ray of the damage it does. Now you can do all of that in VR too.

On PSVR, you can play the game with three sets of controllers. For starters, there’s DualShock 4 and PlayStation Move support. No doubt the star of the show is the PlayStation Aim controller, though, which is shaped like a rifle. If games like Farpoint and Firewall are anything to go by, it should add to the immersion quite nicely.

More good news: the game’s also coming to Oculus Rift and SteamVR (which we assume means Vive/Index too). As for a release date? We don’t have that right now, but stay tuned.

We should be seeing the game for ourselves at E3 this week. We’ll get back to you with full impressions when we can.

Rebellion Unveils ‘Sniper Elite VR’ Gameplay Footage, PC VR & PSVR Confirmed

At E3 today, Rebellion unveiled some fresh gameplay footage and revealed more details behind Sniper Elite VR, the critically acclaimed shooter’s first VR game. The studio also confirmed that PS Aim support is definitely coming to the PSVR version of the game in addition to support for PC VR headsets.

Created in partnership with UK-based studio Just Add Water, Sniper Elite VR takes place in World War II Italy, set prior to the events of Rebellion’s latest entry in the series, Sniper Elite 4 (2017). Unlike previous Sniper Elite titles, the VR game is delivered in the first-person.

With a brand new story written by Tony Schumacher, author of the John Rossett novels, Sniper Elite VR embeds you in the Italian resistance fighting against the Nazis where you’ll be able to explore an array of maps including villages, airfields, and underground bunkers as you fight back to rid Sicily of the U-Boat menace.

Weaponry is said to include sniper rifles (of course), SMGs, pistols, and the tactical ‘Welrod’ suppressed pistol to name a few.

Moreover, Rebellion says Sniper Elite VR will feature free movement, which in the video appears to include teleportation as a locomotion method at least on PSVR. The studio hasn’t mentioned its full list of supported locomotion methods, so we hope to find out more here at E3.

What’s particularly interesting is how Rebellion managed to include the series’ patented X-Ray Kill Cam. According to the video, the game whisks you on an on-rails flight following the path of your bullet, where you then get an up close and personal look at the bone-shattering results of a well placed shot.

Rebellion says they’re supporting PS Aim, Move controllers, as well as DualShock 4 gamepad on PSVR.

Sniper Elite VR is set to arrive on the PlayStation Store for PSVR, and for PC VR headsets via the Oculus Store, Steam, and Viveport. There’s still no launch date on the books, so we’ll just have to wait and see for now.

Upcoming ‘Sniper Elite’ VR Game Likely Headed to PSVR With Aim Support

Yesterday Rebellion Developments, the studio behind the Sniper Elite series, announced that a Sniper Elite VR game is in development in partnership with studio Just Add Water. Details have been kept to a minimum, with a full announcement planned for later this year, but a short glimpse of the game shows that it’s likely headed to PSVR with Aim support; support for other headsets and platforms is unclear at this time.

Rebellion dropped a bunch of Sniper Elite news yesterday, confirming that the studio is developing Sniper Elite V2 Remastered, Sniper Elite 3 Ultimate Edition for Switch, and the “next major title in the Sniper Elite series,” as well as “a new, standalone Sniper Elite game for VR devices.”

Almost no details on the game were given—except that it will be set in the same Mediterranean conflict as Sniper Elite 4—even falling short of saying which headsets or platforms the game will support.

Though “a full reveal” of the game is promised to come later this year, a very brief clip of the game was shared in the studio’s announcement video which showed it being played on a PSVR headset and with a PS Aim controller:

That’s great news for PSVR fans who own the Aim controller accessory; the lauded device isn’t exactly widely supported, but tends to be an immersion booster for games that make use of it, like Farpoint (2017) and Firewall: Zero Hour (2018).

Of course this quick clip isn’t a guarantee that Aim support will be included; the studios could still be prototyping and things could change. But for a game which focuses on two-handed rifles, Aim sure seems to make a lot of sense considering how it couples both hands together, which increases aiming stability (important for high zoom optics).

So it seems probable that the Sniper Elite VR game is headed to PSVR with Aim support, but now we’re curious to know if it’ll be an exclusive on that headset or come to other platforms too. In the past Rebellion released Battlezone as a PSVR exclusive in 2016, and eventually brought it to PC VR headsets in 2017. The studio’s latest VR release, Arca’s Path (2018), debuted simultaneously on most major headsets.

Sniper Elite VR Coming From Battlezone Developer

Sniper Elite VR Coming From Battlezone Developer

Rebellion Entertainment’s next VR game will adapt one of its most popular series, Sniper Elite.

Yes, a brand new Sniper Elite VR game is in the works. Few details have been shared at this time but we do know that it will be a brand new, standalone game. It’s being developed in partnership with Just Add Water, a team best known for remastering Oddworld games. There’s just a brief glimpse of the game in the video below from Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley (around the 4:40 mark).

As the name suggests, Sniper Elite is all about carrying out assassination missions with a sniper rifle. In the video, a player can be seen wearing Sony’s PSVR headset, wielding the Aim controller to handle the sniper. It seems like PSVR is a definite release platform, then, but no word on the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive.

“Ever since we released Battlezone in 2016 on VR platforms, people have asked me “Why didn’t you Sniper Elite game?”” Kingsley says in the video. He revealed that the game will be set in the same conflict seen in Sniper Elite 4.

That’s pretty much all we know for now. We’re not sure if the VR game will be a strictly shooting experience or if it will incorporate stealth elements like the other games in the series. Kingsley says more info will be coming later on in the year.

As Kingsley said, this isn’t Rebellion’s first VR project. The studio launched Battlezone on PSVR back in 2016 before taking it to other headsets and platforms. Last year it also published Dream Reality Interactive’s debut VR game, Arca’s Path.

Rebellion’s Brutal ‘Sniper Elite’ Series is Getting Its First Made-for-VR Game

Sniper Elite is coming to VR. The gritty sniper-focused shooter developed by Rebellion Developments is known for its brutal depictions of long range sniper combat and stealthy action. Now the studio says it’s working on a standalone made-for-VR title for the series in partnership with developer Just Add Water.

The Sniper Elite franchise kicked off in 2005 and now spans eight titles, with the latest, Sniper Elite 4, released in 2017. Today developer and publisher Rebellion Developments announced that four new Sniper Elite projects are in the works including, for the first time, a made-for-VR game.

The studio confirmed development on Sniper Elite V2 Remastered, Sniper Elite 3 Ultimate Edition for Switch, and the “next major title in the Sniper Elite series,” as well as “a new, standalone Sniper Elite game for VR devices.”

Details are thin on the ground, but Rebellon says that the Sniper Elite VR game is being developed in partnership with studio Just Add Water, known for their work on Gravity Crash (2009) and the Oddworld series.

Rebellion promises “a full reveal” of the new Sniper Elite VR game later this year, but hasn’t said when the game might launch or what platforms it will be on. With significant PlayStation experience under the belts of both studios, PSVR seems like a likely bet, but with Just Add Water’s expertise in mobile development for PlayStation Vita, Oculus Quest could be a smart play too. There’s a good chance the game will reach PC VR headsets too, as Rebellion’s other VR projects have all made their way to PC VR platforms.

‘Sniper Elite’ games often toe the line between long range precision shooting and stealthy up-close action. | ‘Sniper Elite 3 (2014)’, Image courtesy Rebellion Developments

Rebellion released the fully VR compatible hover-tank shooter Battlezone as a launch title on PSVR back in 2016, and brought the title to PC VR headsets in 2017. The studio also launched Arca’s Path (2018), a VR third-person platformer-puzzler for PSVR, PC VR, and Oculus mobile headsets.

Sniper Elite however is a totally different beast from the cockpit-based Battlezone and third-person Arca’s Path. The game title will need to take a completely new approach to VR game design, now incorporating motion input, first person embodiment/movement, and item interactions.

The Sniper Elite series is well known for its signature slow motion depictions of bullets blasting through the skulls of bad guys, often slinging the camera hundreds of meters across the landscape to see the action up close.

Exactly how (or if) this kind of visualization mechanic makes it into the Sniper Elite VR game is unclear, but if they can figure it out, the immersiveness of VR would surely make it a sight to behold.
