Smash Drums Adds 5 New Songs In Volcano Update

VR rhythm game Smash Drums is getting five new songs next week.

The Volcano Update arrives as a free patch for owners of the game and includes music from new artists like Richy Mix, LeBrock and Seething Akira as well as more tracks from Young Medicine and Jessie Villa. You can already get a preview of what’s in store by heading to the game’s Spotify playlist.

Smash Drums Gets New Songs And More

There’s more to this update though. As the name suggests, the game will also add a new volcano level with firey lava shifting beneath you as you play. Next up is a practice mode that lets you navigate songs faster and provides an analysis of your performance in certain sections.

More updates are planned for the future, with “iconic rock bands” teased. These will arrive as premium DLC, adopting the model seen in other popular music games like Beat Saber. If you’ve been frustrated with other VR games’ focus on electronic music and want a more traditional rock experience, these packs will probably be worth looking out for. More details will be revealed later in the year.

Smash Drums! Is Coming To App Lab On June 17

The VR rhythm game Smash Drums! is releasing for Quest via App Lab next month.

The game is the latest in a string of many rhythm games to hit Quest, but this one is more percussion than most. It’s like a cross between Beat Saber and Guitar Hero, but for a full drum kit – you’ll be swinging your Touch controllers down onto drum beats as they move towards you.

There’s an environmental element to it as well – as you progress through the song and hit the right beats, the environment around you will be destroyed piece by piece and slowly collapse away.

A new mixed reality trailer was released to celebrate the App Lab release date announcement, embedded above.

Smash Drums started out as just a simple demo available on SideQuest with just one song and two difficulties. It was then one of the first games to release on App Lab, marketing itself as a free demo ahead of the full release later this year.

When it drops on June 17, the full release will feature 21 indie rock songs to choose from and there are supposedly plans for even more content after that.

There’s no word on pricing just yet, but you can expect the full release to be paid given that the existing release on App Lab is marketed as a free demo.

Smash Drums! launches June 17 for Oculus Quest via App Lab. You can install the free demo here.

If you’re looking for more info on how to install App Lab apps onto your Oculus Quest, we’ve got you covered – check our guide on the installation process.

Drum-based Rhythm Game ‘Smash Drums’ to Release on Quest Next Month

Smash Drums is a drum-based rhythm game that’s officially coming to Oculus Quest on June 17th, 2021.

Created by indie studio PotamWorks, Smash Drums will launch on App Lab with 21 indie songs, which can be played in 360-degrees in seven different destructible environments.

PotamWorks says the rhythm game offers a “rugged non-futuristic feel” with its focus on rock & roll tracks and strength-based gameplay. The studio promises plenty of replay value thanks to its four difficulty modes.

Smash Drums is a single player game, although you can compete against other players asynchronously via a Global Live Ranking board.

PotamWorks says Smash Drums will see free songs and environments added regularly post-launch, and will also have paid DLC with new bands and tracks.

You can check out Smash Drums today via free demo its free demo on App Lab. The full launch version is coming first to the Quest platform on June 17th, priced at $20; the game is set to launch on PC VR headsets later this year.

Smash Drums Hits Oculus Quest in June

Smash Drums

When the Oculus Quest App Lab launched back in February the new distribution method only had a very small selection of titles available. One of those was a demo for Smash Drums, a rock-infusing rhythm action videogame by indie team PotamWorks. Today, the developer has confirmed that the full experience will arrive via App Lab next month.

Smash Drums

While the Smash Drums demo offers one song for players to test their drumming skills on the official launch in June will see 21 songs from up-and-coming indie rock bands made available. There are seven environments for players to drum away in, including a prison, a crypt, and an office but one of Smash Drums’ more unique features is that the environments are destructible. So you can literally smash through the songs.

Like several other rhythm action titles currently available Smash Drums employs 360-degree gameplay, so rather than standing on one stationary spot players will find the drums twisting left and right encouraging further movement. At the same time, there’s a live global rankings system allowing players to see their leaderboard position in real-time.

Once the launch has taken place PotamWorks will continue to expand Smash Drums with further content, both paid and free. The studio plans on adding free songs and environments on a regular basis with paid DLC introducing new bands to support development.

Smash Drums

“As a rock fan since I was a teenager in the 90s, it’s been a joy to bring my childhood fun into my real-life job. Thanks to the incredible help of the discord community, and incredible feedback the players provided, I am looking forward to releasing the game and supporting it long beyond once it reaches App Lab,” said Mr Potam, founder at PotamWorks SAS in a statement. “There is so much more to come, and I want you to be sure of one thing: Rock n Roll is not dead: it has never been more ALIVE!”

Download the Smash Drums demo ahead of its launch on 17th June 2021, retailing for $19.99 USD. PotamWorks also plans to release a PC VR version later this year. As further updates are released VRFocus will let you know.

Smash Drums SideQuest Demo Teases Drumming VR Game

Oculus Quest owners can try out a new demo called Smash Drums that shows promise for a drum-based VR rhythm game.

The free demo is available now on SideQuest with easy and hard difficulties on a sample song. While the demo functions as a sort of tease of what a full drumming-focused rhythm game might feel like on Oculus Quest, I found the demo to be pretty fun just by itself. It makes nice use of the 360-degree wireless freedom of Oculus Quest and offers a satisfying sense of really hammering the drums. The environment transforms around you as you play, because you’re rocking so hard the walls fall down and the place catches on fire.

Here’s some gameplay footage from the current demo:

Facebook tightly curates content for the Oculus Quest store and typically asks developers to submit a pitch document before developing with hope of releasing on the storefront. There’s also a high umber of rhythm VR games already on the market, or coming in the near future, so there’s some work to do before Smash Drums might be accepted onto the Quest store. The developer behind the game, France-based Mr Potam, plans to target both Quest and PC VR in early 2021 with a full release of 15 indie rock songs and other features.

I enjoyed my time in the demo so I’d love to see it get fully realized. If you check out the demo and like what you see, maybe let @SmashdrumsVR know about it on Twitter. And if you’re unfamiliar with sideloading you can find out how to use SideQuest with our guide here.

Smash Drums! Is A VR Drumming Game Coming To Quest And Rift In 2021

Prospective VR drummers rejoice — a new drum-based VR rhythm game named Smash Drums! is set to launch next year, and it looks like a rocking good time.

Smash Drums! is coming to Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift S early next year, and it looks to shake up the VR rhythm game genre by offering a different style of music. That’s right, it’s good news for all of you that are sick of EDM tracks, because Smash Drums! won’t have any. Fittingly, it will feature 15 indie rock songs to which you can bang drums to your heart’s content. The developer also says that free DLC tracks will arrive post-launch as well.

As you can see in the gameplay trailer above, different drum kit components will fly towards you to the beat of the music in a Beat Saber-esque manner, and you’ll use your virtual drum sticks to smash them in time. However, there’s an environmental element as well — as you get further through a song, your surroundings will start to break down into a lava-looking substance. So not only are you smashing out some sick beats, but you’re melting your surroundings while you do it.

The tracks have supposedly been tested by professional drummers and complete beginners, so you definitely don’t have to know the ins and outs of playing percussion before getting started. As you expect from a rhythm game, you’ll be able to compete for high scores with other players online, as well as unlock different skins for your kit and sticks.

The full game is scheduled to release in early 2021, but in the meantime a demo is set to arrive on SideQuest for Oculus Quest mid-August, so keep an eye (or maybe an ear) out for more info!
