Review: Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl

When Vertigo Games announces a new virtual reality (VR) title you know it’s going to be of decent quality. Whether it has been developed in-house or merely published by the studio, titles like Arizona Sunshine, A Fisherman’s Tale and Skyworld all demonstrate high production values and deserve a spot in anyone’s videogame library. So with the launch of Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl, can the studio maintain this level.

Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl

Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl isn’t a sequel to the original Skyworld. Released back in 2017 as a hybrid strategy experience that blended both real-time strategy (RTS) and turn-based strategy (TBS) gameplay, Skyworld was both brutal and addictive in equal measure. Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl, on the other hand, is a refinement of its predecessor, dispensing with the TBS side of things and focusing purely on the card-based RTS battles.

In doing so Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl becomes a multiplayer focused – almost esports obsessed – videogame, that’s all about building a deck, to fight PvP brawls or tournaments as part of a team. Very wisely though, Vertigo Games has employed an AI system with selectable difficulty levels so that should you find yourself without a human combatant – either friend or stranger – then a match can always be played that’ll still earn you XP and coinage.

Prior to any battle, you’ll want to manage that deck, with everyone starting with the same basic troops – archers, swordsmen etc. – and spells. What’s nice to see is the ability to start customising that deck straight away, thanks to some cash already being in the bank. There are quite a few options available when it comes to expanding that card roster, whether you prefer an aerial advantage, ground or just like mixing things up. Unlike its predecessor, Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl doesn’t offer troop upgrades as such, instead individual units can be augmented with bonuses that provide plus and minus effects.

Skyworld: Kingdom BrawlFor example, one will allow a unit to increase its damage whilst reducing its health, or vice a versa. The only problem with this was the fact that the augments seemed far too extreme, with the negatives outweighing the positive. So a 25% damage improvement might be met with a 75% health reduction. So, for the most part, it seems best to leave the troops as they are.

If you’ve already played the original then you’ll know how the battles work. You’ll have four cards in your hand which can only be placed if you have enough mana – indicated on your wrist. The object of each fight is to destroy your opponent’s castle, whilst protecting your own. Additionally, each player has two towers out in the field on their side of the map. Advantages can be gained by destroying an opponent’s tower which will then move the central spawn line closer. It’s a neat little addition to the battle as the tide of war can suddenly be turned should either one or both towers crumble.

The battles don’t tend to be long drawn out affairs unless players really are equally matched. And with 20 arenas to fight in there’s enough variety to keep continual battles interesting for several hours.

Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl

If there is a downside it’s that Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl feels like a lesser version of the original. The TBS component added a far deeper, richer strategy element to the gameplay, that did slow the pace down yet made it more methodical. Some players will most definitely like this switch, removing the drawn-out management side making the whole experience faster and engaging right from the start.

On its own Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl plays just fine, taking popular card gaming and bringing it to life for some rather epic tabletop battles. The gameplay design hasn’t changed since the original, just the offering of more online PvP battles. However, should you want value for money and a card-based videogame, then Skyworld is a much better bet.

VR Card-Battler ‘Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl’ Gameplay Revealed in New Video

Chomping at the bit for the next Skyworld game? Vertigo Games and Vive Studios recently showed off some new footage of the upcoming VR card-battler Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl in action, and it seems they’re hoping to take it to new heights in the burgeoning VR esports scene.

Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl is a game where you collect and upgrade dozens of cards to build a battle deck. You cast spells, raise armies, spend mana, etc. It’s an online multiplayer, and is basically an outgrowth from the original Skyworld’s ‘General Battle’ real-time strategy mini-game.

It seems the cross-platform title is being positioned as a potential esport too, as the studio contracted former Machinima producer & esports announcer Shayan Tamayo to commentate on a mock championship battle that shows off a head-to-head, best out of three fight.

To that tune, Vertigo Games has partnered with the Virtual Athletics League to launch a Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl arcade tournament in late April. The studio is putting up a “slew of prizes,” including an HTC Vive Pro, for the winner.

From April 2nd to April 8th, participating arcades will be able to operate the PvP game at no cost in preparation for the inaugural tournament, which ought to reel in interest.

The game is slated to arrive on HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Windows VR headsets, and Vive Focus on April 2nd, which includes cross-platform multiplayer. A version for Vive Focus Plus is said to launch at some point later this year.

The game will be priced at $10 with a 15% discount available during launch week.

First Gameplay Trailer for Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl Released

Vertigo Games’ Skyworld was already a successful strategy title hybrid, mixing both real-time strategy (RTS) and turn-based strategy (TBS) elements together. Then earlier this month the studio revealed a series spin-off called Skyworld: Kingdom Brawla cross-platform multiplayer card-battler due for release next week. The first trailer was merely a teaser and didn’t show any gameplay footage, however, the trailer that’s dropped today is just the opposite.

Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl

The gameplay video shows two players going head to head in a best-out-of-three brawl, showcasing the battles taking place in real-time, as they select some of the 50+ available units, from Siege Tanks, Flying Fortresses and Knights to Dragons and Hellbeasts.

In addition to this first gameplay trailer, Vertigo Games has announced that an arcade tournament will take place in late April. Having joined forces with the Virtual Athletic League, Vertigo Games will be starting things off on launch day by allowing arcades to participate in a free week until 8th April. Launch details for the tournament are still to be confirmed, but because Vertigo Games and Vive Studios have been working together on Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl one of the tournament prizes will be an HTC Vive Pro.

Like all good card battlers, Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl will allow players to unlock, collect and upgrade dozens of cards to build powerful decks, watching them come alive in the process. As a multiplayer focused title, players can go it alone or join a clan, taking on opponents from around the globe across 20 different arenas in regular online tournaments to rank on the global leaderboards.

Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl

Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl is scheduled to launch next Tuesday, 2nd April 2019, supporting HTC Vive, HTC Vive Pro, HTC Vive Focus, Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. The title will retail for $9.99 USD/ €9.99 EUR with a 15% discount available for launch week. An HTC Vive Focus Plus version is also in the works for later this year. For the latest updates on Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl, keep reading VRFocus.

[Update]: Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl erscheint am 2. April für PC-Brillen; Erster Gameplay-Trailer veröffentlicht

[Update]:

Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl Is A Cross-Platform PvP Card Battle VR Game

Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl Is A Cross-Platform PvP Card Battle VR Game

Today, Vertigo Games announced Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl, a brand-new VR game in the same universe as their RTS/MOBA hybrid, Skyworld, that’s due out on April 2nd for HTC Vive, Vive Focus, Rift, and Windows VR headsets. Launching on both PC VR and a standalone platform at the same time is a relatively new thing and hopefully we see this make its way to Quest and PSVR later this year as well.

Truth be told we really weren’t big fans of Skyworld when it came out. As a strategy game it was too shallow and as a MOBA it just didn’t do enough. It felt like it was going through a bit of an identity crisis and never really figured itself out before launch. But Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl looks downright delightful.

For clarity, this is actually developed by Vertigo Games, just like Arizona Sunshine and Skyworld. Vertigo is also now a publisher as well and recently published A Fisherman’s Tale [9/10] and just announced Corsair’s Curse from that same developer. Similar to how Bethesda develops games (The Elder Scrolls, Fallout) but also publishes them (DOOM, Dishonored, Wolfenstein, etc.)

We don’t know very much about the game mechanics yet since that teaser is painfully brief, but the press release has a few details:

“Unlock, collect and upgrade dozens of cards to build a powerful deck, and watch your cards come to life as you cast spells and summon forces to wipe your enemy off the map. Join a clan, take on opponents from around the globe in regular online tournaments, and claim your place on the global leaderboards.”

Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl will be demoing at GDC in the VR Play Area, so we will check it out in-person later this month and report back with impressions. Let us know what you think of the game so far down in the comments below!

Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl, like many card-based battle games, lets you collect, unlock, and upgrade cards to build a deck, although the creators say you’ll also be able to “watch your cards come to life as you cast spells and summon forces to wipe your enemy off the map.” In Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl you’ll also be able to join a clan, play in regular online tournaments, and post your high score on a worldwide leaderboard.

Vertigo Games Turns Skyworld Into Cross-Platform Multiplayer Card Game

Vertigo Games released its mix of real-time and turn-based strategy experience Skyworld back in 2017, offering a mashup of several genres. Today, the company in collaboration with Vive Studios have announced a new title in the franchise, a multiplayer card-battler called Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl

Skyworld - Lost Worlds

Designed to be a highly competitive cross-platform experience, Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl will allow players to unlock, collect and upgrade dozens of cards to build powerful decks. This being virtual reality (VR) they’ll be able to see their cards come alive as they cast spells and summon forces to wipe their opponents off the map. As a multiplayer focused title, players can go it alone or join a clan, taking on opponents from around the globe in regular online tournaments to rank on the global leaderboards.

“We set out to deliver a consistent, uncompromising cross-platform experience across PC VR and standalone VR hardware with Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl and it’s exciting to see how far we’ve been able to push the devices; from drawing massive numbers of units on screen to delivering awesome combat effects,” said Trevor Blom, Lead Tech at Vertigo Studios in a statement.
