Minds Eye Entertainment and SkyVR have partnered to produce a scripted, live-action cinematic virtual reality (VR) piece that is set to thrill audiences. Titled Distorted Reality, the thriller piece will allow viewers to immersive themselves within the film starting Christina Ricci, Brendan Fletcher and John Cusack.
The story follows the events of a women suffering from bipolar disorder whom comes to suspect the proprietor of the state-of-the-art “smart apartment” she and her husband just moved into is using the building’s residents as unwitting guinea pigs for a “synthetic telepathy” brainwashing plot with dire global ramifications. Thanks to the power of VR, viewers will be complete immersed within the story and see everything unfold from a completely new perspective. The expereince is a ten minute version of the feature length theatrical release titled Distorted.
“We are excited for the world to see this piece. John Cusack and Christina Ricci truly embraced the VR medium and helped us to tell a compelling story that compliments the original film through extending the “Distorted” universe,” said Kevin Dewalt, CEO of Minds Eye Entertainment.
The partnership and collaboration of VR producers lead by Minds Eye Entertainment has allowed for this VR release to come to fruition following their previously VR works with stars like Nicolas Cage, Wesley Snipes and RJ Mitte. To create the VR release of the film the team used sixteen synchronized GoPro Hero4 cameras and a GoPro Odyssey under Jump, which is Google’s professional VR video solution for making 3D-360 video production scalable and built for automated stitching and seamless VR video production.
“We are a throwback to the star-driven days of the movie business in this new hyperactive medium. In order to drive audience engagement and increase awareness, we believe we must bring together compelling narratives with marketable stars in order to bring VR to the masses,” said VR Producer Travis Cloyd. “We are excited to be one of the only groups facilitating A-list film star debuts in virtual reality, and we hope that others will follow our lead.”
Distorted Reality is available on a number on platforms including Google Daydream, Oculus Go, Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR. The film is also available in a non-VR release just titled Distorted as well. You can see the VR trailer for the title below and for more on VR films in the future, keep reading VRFocus.
