It Looks Like Devolver Digital Is Publishing A New VR Game

We might be seeing another VR game from the Devolver Digital team in the near future.

Clara Sia of the publisher’s Influencer Strategy team recently put out a tweet looking for games testers with VR headsets. The project in question wasn’t disclosed and it sounds like it’s unannounced given that Sia went on to say anyone talking about it will be punted “into the sun”. So there’s that.

Devolver has published a few VR games in the past few years. It partnered with Free Lives to release enduring VR hit, Gorn, on basically every platform. We’d love to see more of Gorn, though Free Lives is currently working on non-VR city builder, Terra Nil.

Elsewhere, Serious Sam developer Croteam released a VR spin-off of the shooter series years back and has even ported past Sam games and its popular puzzle title, The Talos Principle to headsets too. Last year the team released Serious Sam 4 for PC, so there’s a chance it could be a VR version of that.

Whatever the project turns out as, it’s good to see publishers releasing more VR content. What do you think Devolver could be working on? Let us know in the comments below!

The 15 Very Best VR Shooters For Rift, Vive, PSVR, and Windows VR

The 15 Very Best VR Shooters For Rift, Vive, PSVR, and Windows VR

Over the last two and a half years we’ve gotten a lot of VR shooters. From zombie-slaying adventures and sci-fi romps through the stars, to hardcore military simulations and hunting dinosaurs on a lonely island, there’s been something for just about everybody.

Now with quite a few promising VR shooters on the horizon we’ve decided to round up our list of the very best 15 VR shooters that you can play right now on Rift, Vive, PSVR, and Windows VR headsets while you get ready for the next wave of intense FPS action.

All entries are listed alphabetically, any past entries that may have been removed are listed at the bottom before the “Coming Soon” section.

Arizona Sunshine (Rift, Vive, PSVR, and Windows VR)

Our Review

Vertigo Games’ zombie-killing adventure, Arizona Sunshine, is still the best game featuring the walking undead. It’s got a solid campaign, cooperative multiplayer, and an addictive horde mode. Everything is ultra-polished and it’s just a joy to play. Can’t recommend this one enough.

Compound (Rift, Vive, Windows VR)

Our Preview

Your eyes are not deceiving you: that video above is actually what Compound, a 2018 VR shooter, looks like. It’s honestly like you’ve set foot inside of a classic 90s-era PC FPS like Wolfenstein or Quake. From our preview: “[Compound] recaptures the revelatory 3D thrills of sneaking around Castle Wolfenstein, hugging a pixelated wall and quickly poking around a corner for a few pot shots at unsuspecting enemies, opening a door and leaping in fright at the sight of an armed goon opening fire, or the relief that comes with discovering a cache of health. But there’s renewed enthusiasm in unearthing the core of the first-person shooter that takes Compound far further than a faithful love letter.”

Farpoint (PSVR Exclusive)

Our Review

Farpoint was released as the flagship title for Sony’s PSVR Aim Controller and it does a great job of showcasing the device. We wouldn’t recommend playing it without the controller, in fact. What you’ll get is a decent campaign, 1v1 PvP maps, solo challenge maps, and co-op wave-based maps to play with a friend. It’s a lot of content and you’ll be hard-pressed to find a VR shooter that just feels better to play than Farpoint.

Firewall Zero Hour (PSVR Exclusive)

Our Review

I’ll just quote my review here: “Firewall Zero Hour defies the odds by delivering a multiplayer-focused VR shooter that actually lives up to its potential. If you don’t have a PS Aim controller yet, then you should buy one for this game even though it technically supports DualShock 4 as well. If you don’t have a PSVR headset yet, then you should buy one for this game. With a few improvements and additions, First Contact could turn what is already a must-have PSVR game into a genre-defining one.”

From Other Suns (Rift Exclusive)

Our Review

Imagine if you took the ship management aspects out of something like FTL then married it with a procedurally generated roguelike with a Star Trek Away Team-style skin. That’s basically From Other Suns. It’s a blast on co-op and is basically infinitely replayable.

Gunheart (Rift, Vive, and Windows VR)

Our Review

This is about the closest you’re gonna get to something like Borderlands in VR right now. The drop-in, drop-out co-op works great, missions are fun and replayable, and there’s a ton of stuff to unlock in terms of guns, weapon mods, and cosmetic items. The movement features a mixture of free locomotion, teleporting, and excellent floaty jumps. Oh — and there’s PvP!

Island 359 (Rift and Vive)

Our Review

Hunting dinosaurs is terrifying, but it’s also fun. That’s the underlying premise that Island 359 was founded on. Think of it as a survival shooter that drops you into a jungle and asks you to hunt deadly dinos for survival. With a lot of weapons and game modes to pick from, it’s the kind of VR game that keeps on giving.

Onward (Rift and Vive)

Read More About Its Development Here

While still technically in Early Access, this was really the original hardcore VR shooter to put competitive FPS games on the map for the immersive medium. It’s got excellent mechanics, a strikingly realistic gameplay feel, and it does a great job of making you really feel like you’re in the middle of a war. Highly recommended.

Pavlov (Rift and Vive)

Read Our Impressions

Pavlov is what you get when someone looks at a game like Onward and says, “What if that, but a little less hardcore?” That’s the long and short of it. Pavlov is basically Counter-Strike VR and it totally works.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (PSVR Exclusive)

Our Review

About a year and a half after its release, this is still hands-down the scariest experience I’ve had in VR to date. Everything from the slow-building narrative, perfect shooter-based gameplay, gorgeously grotesque world, and horrifying violence make this a must-play for all PSVR owners.

Sairento (Rift and Vive)

Our Review

If Raw Data and Robo Recall are a bit too tame for you, then Sairento may be able to scratch that itch. It’s got more high-flying action, time-slowing powers, and an excellent mixture of ninja elements to make you both look and feel like a badass superhero.

Serious Sam 3 VR: BFE (Rift, Vive, and Windows VR)

Croteam’s Serious Sam series is one of the longest-running pure adrenaline-based action shooter franchises on the market. It’s all about pure action with tons of enemies on-screen and lots of back-pedaling. Serious Sam 3 VR cuts no corners and even features online multiplayer.

Stand Out: VR Battle Royale (Rift, Vive, and Windows VR)

Watch Our Livestream

I don’t like rip-offs. That’s a blanket statement that covers my feelings on the topic…for the most part. In the case of Stand Out: VR Battle Royale I’m willing to make an exception. For all intents and purposes, this game is a rip-off of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) by taking that exact premise, art style, and even many minor rules and mechanics, and just adapting it for VR. In fact, even the logo looks about the same. It’s shameless, but damn if it isn’t a ton of fun despite the lack of polish.

Superhot VR (Rift, Vive, PSVR, and Windows VR)

Our Review

Calling Superhot a shooter isn’t really accurate, but we had to include it on this list since it does feature lots of guns. In Superhot time only moves when you do, so it’s actually more of a puzzle game as you figure out how to take out all enemies without getting hit in this cerebral thriller.

Until Dawn: Rush of Blood (PSVR Exclusive)

Our Review

This was a launch title for the PSVR and remains as one of the platform’s very best in terms of fun you can have behind a pair of dual-wielded guns. It’s actually just one 3-4 hour long roller coaster ride full of jump scares and bad guys waiting to be filled with lead. Beyond featuring some of the best sound design we’ve seen in a horror title yet, it’s also just a treat to play through.

(9/11/18 Update): This is a living, ever-evolving list. As of September 11, 2018, we’ve bumped Raw Data, Robo Recall, and Killing Floor: Incursion off of the list to make room for Stand Out: VR Battle Royale, Firewall Zero Hour, and Compound.

Coming Soon

Zero Killed (September 26th, Rift and Vive)

PC VR users already have Onward and Pavlov and PSVR users now have Firewall Zero Hour, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for more realistic military shooters out there. This one is shaping up to be a mixture of Rainbow Six and Counter-Strike with tactical combat that still leans heavily on fast and intense gameplay. We’ll have impressions of this one very soon on the site.

Evasion (October 9th, Rift, Vive, and PSVR)

There are lots of single player-focused shooters on this list and the handful of multiplayer ones are mostly all about slow-paced tactical warfare — but not Evasion. Described as part co-op VR shooter and part “bullet hell” game, this one is all about staying mobile, leveraging your class abilities, and dodging enemy fire. The PSVR edition will support the Aim controller as well so this is one worth keeping your eye on.

Echo Combat (2018, Rift Exclusive)

Since it’s already gone through Open Beta, we imagine it’s not far off from release. Echo Combat takes the innovative movement system from Lone Echo and Echo Arena and marries it with Overwatch-style payload-moving FPS action.

Space Junkies (2018, Rift, Vive, and Windows VR)

Having just come off of a Closed Beta last weekend, Space Junkies is likely not far off from release either. This one feels a bit like the VR spiritual successor to Unreal Tournament with lots of zero-G jetpack flying action.

Defector (2018, Rift Exclusive)

If you’ve ever wanted to feel like the star of your own Mission Impossible film, then Defector could be the perfect game. Like, seriously. That’s what this is.

Zero Caliber (Early 2019)

We don’t know much about this one yet, but it already is on our list of most-anticipated VR shooters for sure. The art direction is beautiful and the co-op action looks like a great implementation of the sci-fi setting.

We undoubtedly missed some of your favorite VR shooters. Let us know what they are down in the comments below!

L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files

“it’s that believability that makes L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files one of the most immersive VR videogames to date. As with most releases on modern VR hardware, it’s easy to pick flaws in the videogame due to the control systems and lessened visual quality, but to do so would be to ignore the huge leap forward L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files makes in the creation of a real-world playground. The delivery of unique characters impresses a sense of urgency, empathy and often distain unlike any other videogame experience, playing into the strengths of the VR medium by placing the player face-to-face with convincing digital human beings. L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files presents an unwavering argument for VR as a compelling entertainment medium, and should be welcomed as a yet another stepping stone to true presence in digital worlds.” – Read VRFocus’ Editor Kevin Joyce’s review of L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files.

Something for the Weekend: Bundles And Deals In The Steam Store

Some days are really sent to test you. Nothing goes right, and instead everything goes very wrong indeed. It’s raining out, or cold, or both. Something expensive breaks. Someone reliable is not. You’ve no time for any of the things you need to do. Your post is nothing but bills and your next-door neighbour is still playing that same song over and over they started playing several hours back. What’s the worst is when these days happen to be on the weekend, supposedly days of rest.

Sometimes you just need to take a load off, and get away from it all. In this way virtual reality (VR) is especially valuable. After all, if the world’s full of nonsense why not go to a new one? Thankfully there’s always a deal here on the various stores where you can pick up a videogame on the cheap and work out some of the stress from a testing world.

Today’s selection of titles picked by VRFocus come from Steam, so check out the below and maybe save some cash on something good.

CROTEAM VR Bundle

Compatibility: HTC Vive and Oculus Rift

Remember what I said about combating stress above? Here’s a bumper pack of titles to cause havoc in.

Earlier in the week we told you about the release of Serious Sam 3 VR: BFE. Croteam have been busy throughout 2016 and 2017 converting some of their most iconic titles – the Serious Sam series – into VR compatible adventures for both HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. As well as that release Croteam also released a special bundle of all their VR related titles onto Steam.
It’s a five pack consisting of Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope, Serious Sam VR: The First EncounterSerious Sam VR: The Second Encounter, the aforementioned Serious Sam 3 VR: BFE and also The Talos Principle.

The CROTEAM VR Bundle works out to be 51 percent off of purchasing the games separately; meaning you can pick up all five titles for £73.90 GBP rather than £150.95.

Racket Nx screenshotRacket: Nx

Compatibility: HTC Vive and Oculus Rift

Racket: Nx is an out and out sports title, compare it to any game which involves a racket of some sort (badminton, tennis, table tennis, etc), just with a bit of sci-fi flare. Players are located in the centre of a dome, on a slightly raised platform. This dome is made up of hexagonal panels which illuminate with different options depending on the game mode or difficulty.” – Read Peter Graham’s preview for VRFocus.

Until the end of Monday Racket: Nx is available on Steam for £9.59 (GBP) rather than £15.99.

Karnage Chronicles logoKarnage Chronicles

Compatibility: HTC Vive and Oculus Rift

Karnage Chronicles is a first-person experience that performs in a similar fashion to the extremely well received Vanishing Realms: Rite of Steel. While Indimo Labs’ debut title nails the combination of puzzle solving and combat fairly solidly, Karnage Chronicles has two other ideals up its sleeve: character class divisions and co-operative gameplay.” – Read VRFocus Editor Kevin Joyce’s preview.

You’ve just over a day to get Karnage Chronicles on Steam at 15% off, for £16.14 (GBP) rather than £18.99.

ZomDay

Compatibility: HTC Vive and Oculus Rift

It seems like there’s always a zombie crisis somewhere isn’t there?  In this fast-paced Early Access VR videogame from INTO GAMES a zombie outbreak has occurred throughout the world.  You are a soldier of the Special Event Action Team, better known by the acronym S.E.A.T.  It’s your job to convince the walking dead to stop the former, and stay the latter. With as many bullets as is necessary.

You’ve until November 17th to get 25% off of ZomDay, bringing the price down to £5.24 (GBP) from £6.99.

Aeon

Compatibility: HTC Vive

For a short time only you can get Final Soccer VR for £7.49 (GBP) 50% off its usual price of £14.99.  Its also a part of the Virtual Reality Arcade Bundle, which also features Lander 8009 VR, Operation Warcade VR and Off-Road Paradise: Trial 4×4. Legendary Hunter VR

Super Ninja Hero VR

Compatibility: HTC Vive and Oculus Rift

If there’s one thing that’s bound to ruin your day it’s a bunch of ninja’s flying out of the sky. I mean it’s a Sunday. You’ve got things to do. That washing isn’t going to sort itself out you know. Take up arms in Wuhan Firegame Co.,Ltd’s first person battler which is on sale now for half its usual price of £6.99 (GBP). Another title in the Steam week long deal that is rapidly expiring, you’ve just over a day to act and acquire it.

Wacky Wings VR

Compatibility: HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and OSVR

A title that came out at the beginning of the year from Pocket Money Games, Wacky Wings VR doesn’t see you just fly aeroplanes, it also sees you take command of helicopters and even dragons! Navigate your way through ten levels of in-flight entertainment.

Wacky Wings VR is available at half price until November 15th, so act fast if you want it for £1.99 (GBP) as opposed to £3.99.

‘Serious Sam 3 VR: BFE’ Launches on Steam Today

Croteam, the minds behind the Serious Sam franchise, has released its fourth Serious Sam-themed VR game: Serious Sam 3 VR: BFE (2017) for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

Now available on SteamSerious Sam 3 VR: BFE is a fast-paced shooter serving as a prequel to the original Serious Sam: The First Encounter (2001). While it’s technically a VR port of the 6-year old Serious Sam 3: BFE (2011), and not really designed from the ground-up for VR, that’s probably not going to bother a lot of hardcore first-person shooter fans as they step into the shoes of Sam for the fourth time. Taking place during an epic final struggle against Mental’s invading forces, you shoot down beasts in a way fans of the franchise will immediately resonate with; by walking up and blowing their heads off with your own two hands.

A big difference from Croteam’s first VR game, Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope (2017), is the inclusion of artificial locomotion so you can explore the game’s expansive levels in the same vein as Croteam’s second and third Serious Sam VR games—Serious Sam VR: The First Encounter (2017) and Serious Sam VR: The Second Encounter (2017).

The game supports a few teleportation styles as well as smooth movement presets, with or without comfort mode. Also included are Croteam’s ‘advanced VR controls’, something the company says is “meant for the hardcore VR gamer.”

“Wishes of the VR community are always in the back of our minds, and we’re very excited to round out our virtual reality offerings in order to provide them with the full Serious Sam experience,” said Croteam VR lead and all-around nice guy, Davor Hunski. “Our goal was to deliver intuitive, thrilling and fun VR games and, hopefully, we made that happen.”

The game boasts a number of multiplayer modes like Co-op, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Last Man Standing, Last Team Standing and Instant Kill. Supporting both Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, you can bet you’ll want a room-scale tracking setup to get the most out of the 360 carnage.

Serious Sam 3 VR: BFE normally costs $40, but is currently 10% off at $36. The offer ends November 16th.

Serious Sam 3 VR:BFE klopft an

Serious Sam 3 VR: BFE

Croteam’s Serious Sam 3 VR Now Available (Update)

Croteam’s Serious Sam 3 VR Now Available (Update)

Update: Serious Sam 3 VR: BFE is now available for purchase on Steam for $35.99 (that includes a 10% launch discount, normally it’s $39.99) with support for both HTC Vive and Oculus Rift with Touch.

Original: Hot off the back of the release of The Talos Principle VR, it looks like Croteam’s next VR port will be here very, very soon.

A listing for Serious Sam 3 VR: BFE, which was announced earlier this year, recently popped up on Steam and confirms that the game will be releasing on November 9th. We’re reaching out to Croteam and publisher Devolver Digital to make sure that’s 100% the case, but it’d be a little weird to suddenly post a Steam listing saying your game releases tomorrow if that isn’t really the case.

The Steam page also includes the first trailer for the game in action, which you can see above. It looks exactly like you’d expect: a straight up port of the fast-paced action game for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, much like the ports of the first two games were. It’s set to offer the usual cooperative and single-player modes, the former of which can be played with those using the traditional version of the game.

The game’s release also means Croteam will have ported all of its 3D games to VR now, which begs the question: what’s next?
