Even with the rise of advanced virtual reality (VR) technology that can envelope players in fantastic digital worlds, the lure of retro gaming continues unabated with even more mini consoles appearing on the market. Sega allowed PC players to scratch that retro itch years ago with the SEGA Mega Drive and Genesis Classics compendium, updating it even further by adding Oculus Rift and HTC Vive support in June. Today, the software developer has rolled that VR update out to PlayStation VR.
Revealed as a free update via Sega’s Twitter account, it’ll do exactly what the Steam addition allowed, giving players the opportunity to sit in a virtual mock up of an 90’s bedroom full of hints to the industry’s history. Sitting players down in front of an old CRT TV, there’s a shelf littered with old Mega Drive titles which can either be viewed on the TV or in full screen mode.
Delving into Sega’s illustrious history over 50 titles across every imaginal genre are present, from all-time classics like Sonic and Streets of Rage 2 to role-playing games (RPGs) like the Phantasy Star series, plus; shooters, beat ’em ups, puzzlers, old favourites and one or two hidden gems.
All these old classics benefit from several new features adding modern conveniences like being able to save your game at any time, rewind those slip-ups, or customise your controls. There’s also online multiplayer and achievements.
If you already own the title then get updating, otherwise VRFocus has some good news. SEGA Mega Drive Classics is currently on sale for EU customers, with 36 percent off. So it’ll only cost £15.99 GBP rather than the normal £24.99. The US PlayStation Store isn’t offering a Summer Sale at present, so Sega Genesis Classics is the usual $29.99.
VRFocus is all for retro gaming, so if anymore classics get a bit of the VR treatment we’ll let you know.
