Black Friday Brings Oculus Quest’s First True Games Sale

It’s Black Friday today, and Facebook is finally putting a large number of Quest games on sale – though mostly still through bundles.

Since the release of the Oculus Quest back in May, games in its app store haven’t gone on sale. In fact, even when a game was on sale on Steam or a non-cross-buy game was on sale on the Rift store, it wasn’t on sale in the Quest store.

On Wednesday Facebook finally launched a discounted Thanksgiving Collection, but this isn’t much of a deal if you only wanted a few games from it.

But Black Friday is the day of sales, and Facebook is finally offering a range of 6 bundles, as well as 8 Quest games on sale individually.

The bundles are sorted by price, with the most expensive (Black) being $200 and the most affordable (Bronze) being $45.

All of the offers end midnight tonight in the Pacific Standard Time Zone.

Black Collection ($200) [21% Off]

The Black Collection is priced at $200, which saves $55 off the price of buying all of these games separately. It includes:

OUR TAKE: While this bundle contains some of the best games on Quest, it isn’t a great deal unless you’re already interested in almost all of them.

Platinum Collection ($150) [21% Off]

The Platinum Collection is priced at $150, which saves $40 off the price of buying all of these games separately. It includes:

OUR TAKE: This bundle is too hit and miss to justify dropping $150. It’s only a great deal if you’re interested in all of these games.

Gold Collection ($100) [23% Off]

The Gold Collection is priced at $100, which saves $30 off the price of buying all of these games separately. It includes:

OUR TAKE: Every game in this bundle is solid. We’d recommend looking into them- this could be a reasonable way to pack out your Quest library.

Silver Collection ($90) [19% Off]

The Silver Collection is priced at $90, which saves $22 off the price of buying all of these games separately. It includes:

OUR TAKE: The discount here is too small to justify the $90 price, given that a few of these games aren’t exactly must-owns.

Iron Collection ($60) [19% Off]

The Iron Collection is priced at $60, which saves $15 off the price of buying all of these games separately. It includes:

OUR TAKE: Unless you’re a huge Angry Birds fan, this is a bundle to skip.

Bronze Collection ($45) [9% Off]

The Bronze Collection is a simple 2 game bundle: SUPERHOT VR [9/10] and I Expect You To Die [8/10].

It’s priced at at $45, which saves $5 over buying these games separately.

OUR TAKE: Both of these are must-play games on Quest, and while a $5 discount isn’t enormous, we think it’s worth grabbing this bundle while it lasts!

Standalone Deals

The following apps & games are on sale outside of any bundle:

OUR TAKE: None of these discounts are significant, but if you’re a fan of the Rocky franchise you’ll want to pick up Creed while it’s on sale. And if you want to use your PC from your Quest, there’s no better way than Virtual Desktop.

Black Friday 2019: Oculus Go $50 Off From Nov. 28 To Dec. 2

This Black Friday Oculus Go is getting some discounts on both the 32GB and 64GB model.

The Oculus Go discounts are just one of many upcoming Black Friday deals for VR. This year Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 28, which makes Black Friday November 29. ‘Black Friday’ is just a marketing term, though, and doesn’t actually mean the sales start on that Friday.

In many cases in the weeks leading up to the date you’ll find lots of deals already available and even that week many retailers will launch sales on the 28th itself, or even earlier on the 27th, and they’ll carry through until the end of the month.

In terms of the Oculus Go specifically, the 2018-era standalone 3DoF mobile headset is getting some steep discounts.  The 32GB model will be discounted from $199 to just $149 and the 64GB model will be taken down from $249 to $199. The discounts should be available from November 28 until December 2nd, so you’ve only got a few days to snap up a discounted Go if you’ve been eyeing one.

The deals will be available on oculus.com, Amazon and Best Buy. If you’re unfamiliar with VR, keep in mind the Oculus Go is a headset with limited interaction and comfort that’s meant for more entertainment consumption (like watching movies) rather than the active VR games the newer camera-equipped Oculus Quest makes possible.

To check out our roundup of all the other Black Friday deals for other systems, including PC VR headsets, PS VR and the Quest, check out our list here. We will be continually updating the list as more deals pop up, so check back from time to time to see what’s new.

Community Download: How Many Headsets Do You Think Oculus Has Sold?

Community Download is a weekly discussion-focused articles series published every Monday in which we pose a single, core question to you all, our readers, in the spirit of fostering discussion and debate.

According to market research firm SuperData, as quoted in CNBC, Facebook’s Oculus Go VR headset has sold two million units, Quest had sold 1.1 million units and Rift had sold 547,000 units since the start of 2018. According to Oculus Co-Founder and inventor of the Rift, Palmer Luckey, that’s not accurate.

Luckey took to Twitter to say that between the Gear VR and CV1 Oculus Rift combined the number is actually well over 10 million. The implication is that the company has sold more than these figures allude.

But we don’t actually know for sure at all because Facebook doesn’t release sales figures for its products. All we can really do is guess. The same goes for HTC, Valve, Microsoft’s Windows VR line, and most other headset manufacturers. The only company that’s really been transparent with regular sales figure updates is Sony. As of May 2019 Sony has sold over 4.2 million PSVR headsets. That’s likely even higher by now.

So, that brings us to the issue at hand: How many VR headsets do you think Oculus has sold? In fact, why not just ask: How many VR headsets, period, do you think have been sold? Do you think between the CV1 and Rift S there are more than one millioin yet? Between all of the multiple types of PC VR headsets do you think there are more than the 4.2 million PSVRs yet?

Let us know your thoughts on headset sales down below!

Beat Saber Remains On Top Of February PlayStation Store Charts

Beat Saber Remains On Top Of February PlayStation Store Charts

A relatively quiet February for PSVR saw Beat Saber claim the top of Sony’s store charts once again.

Beat Games’ rhythm action sensation topped the lists for both the US and EU regions in February. It’s no surprise; Beat Saber was the best-selling PSVR game on the PlayStation Store for all of 2018. It only released in mid-November. It’s safe to say this one will be topping charts for a long time, then.

Other than that the charts are comprised of the same olf suspects. Job Simulator took second in the EU whereas Superhot took the spot in the US.

Sadly the US side of the list didn’t see any new entries last month. We’d have hoped to see launches like The Mage’s Tale and Dick Wilde 2 take up at least a little new ground. It’s at least a little different on the EU side, though. Crisis VRigade, a bloody police shooter, came in 10th. We didn’t know much about the game beforehand but no doubt the measly £3.99 price tag helped it get onto the list.

This month will welcome some new contenders to the scene. The PSVR version of The Wizards finally launches this week and the long-anticipated Immortal Legacy hits on March 20th. Finally, Ubisoft’s Space Junkies arrives on March 26th. Hopefully these will be enough to shake up the charts.

That said it’s a big week for Beat Saber too. The long-awaited first DLC pack arrives on March 14th. No doub that will help boost sales for the full game too.

CES 2019: NVIDIA CEO Says Four Million PC VR Headsets Sold

CES 2019: NVIDIA CEO Says Four Million PC VR Headsets Sold

During NVIDIA’s CES 2019 press conference the company’s CEO Jensen Huang took the stage to unveil the new RTX 2060 GPU with VirtualLink — that same functionality will make its way into RTX laptops as well. As an almost forgotten aside though, during his speech, Huang also revealed that four million PC VR headsets have been sold over the last several years.

Specifically, Huang claims, “Four million HMD VR displays have been sold for PCs in the last several years,” which, if true, is a solid number. He didn’t reveal any more details about that figure such as how many were Rifts, Vives, Windows headsets, or others, and he didn’t specify that timeframe, which means he could be including things like the DK1, DK2, and other pre-release headsets in that figure. It could include enterprise sales as well, which are definitely a very different market.

This all means if you’re a VR developer you shouldn’t take this to mean the potential market for your upcoming Steam VR game is four million people — it’s likely not that high. But this does corroborate the steady growth we’ve noticed on the Steam hardware surveys each and every month. In fact, over all of 2018, the number of PC VR headsets on Steam doubled, which is huge.

But until we know more about how he reached this figure or hear confirmation from the likes of Oculus, HTC, and Microsoft, I’m not sure how much weight I’d give this kind of statement, personally.

Now with CES kicking off this week we’re sure to learn more about whatever the is, see the new Pico headset, try out the Oculus Quest again, and see more from the likes of Pimax, Odin, VRGineers, and many others. As companies like Facebook continue to move towards mass-adoption via standalone VR, others like Valve are doubling down on the PC market with in-development hardware of their own.

The last time we heard from Sony they had confirmed three million PSVRs had been sold back in August, but that was before Firewall Zero Hour, Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, Tetris Effect, Borderlands 2 VR, and other big games at the end of last year released — not to mention Black Friday and the holiday season, which means they’ve likely eclipsed four million at this point all on their own, or are close to it.

Does this sound like a feasible number to you? Are you happy or disappointed in four million for the PC VR ecosystem? Let us know down in the comments below!

Oculus Launches 10% Off Referral Program For Rift

Oculus Launches 10% Off Referral Program For Rift

Despite how far the Oculus Rift’s price has come down since launch, for many potential buyers it’s still a little too expensive to justify. If you’re an owner, you’ll often find yourself wishing that your friends had one too so you could play co-op and multiplayer VR games together. Games like Raw Data, Arizona Sunshine, From Other Suns, and Echo VR are much better with friends.

Well, we have good news for you. Earlier this month, Oculus launched a referral program for the Rift, seemingly intended for this exact scenario. By referring your friend to purchase the Oculus Rift, your friend gets 10% (around $40) off the Rift, and 30 days later you receive a $30 Oculus Store credit for VR apps/games.

Of course, there are some restrictions here. For starters, it’s seemingly USA-only for now, so both you and your friend will need to be in the USA. Additionally, each Rift owner can only refer up to 3 friends, however technically those friends could refer even more.

Oculus CTO John Carmack recently stated that the Oculus Go headset was beating sales expectations, but no similar statement has ever been made about the higher end Rift, and many analysts believe that the Rift (and PC VR in general) is selling poorer than many expected. While $40 off doesn’t make a radical shift in affordability, it may be just what’s needed to get some people to join their friends in PC VR, a natural way to grow the Rift user-base.
