Mixed Realms Opens Playtesting for Hellsweeper VR, Details Roadmap

Hellsweeper VR

The next virtual reality (VR) title from Mixed Realms (Sairento VR) is Hellsweeper VR a first-person roguelike where you have to fight through a nightmarish underworld. While development is still in the early stages – a full release isn’t expected until Q3 2022 – the studio has just opened up playtesting over on Steam as well as releasing Hellsweeper VR’s development roadmap.

Hellsweeper VR

Hellsweeper VR is all about battling hordes of monstrous demons that already look fairly formidable using melee weapons, guns and magical powers, both solo and in online co-op. Mixed Realms’ roadmap reveals that Hellsweeper VR will feature three core modes: Roguelike, Sandbox and Multiplayer. Roguelike is the main portion of the experience, split across three acts with randomly assigned locations, weapons, skills and increasingly challenging enemies. Each act will be split down into various missions and levels as follows:

  • Elimination Mission: Eliminate the level’s boss.
  • Survival Mission: Survive hordes of enemies for a stipulated time.
  • Totem Mission: Destroy totems around the map to stop enemies from spawning.
  • Wave Missions: Defeat wave after waves of enemies.
  • Sacrifice Mission: Sacrifice enemies to unlock altars around the map.
  • Various Challenges & Mini-Games: Unlock the tori gates of hell with challenges that will test your skills, wit and luck.
  • Collect Rewards – Unlock treasure chests with keys or destroy mini totems around the map to collect additional Souls and/or Obols, the two main currencies in the game.

The Sandbox mode will give you a bit more control over the gameplay, selecting from a variety of options including the arena, mission style, difficulty level, preferred weapons and abilities. Whilst the Multiplayer offers the co-op mission option or allowing players to fight each other in PvP.

Hellsweeper VR

When it comes to weapons Mixed Realms lists a pistol, broadsword, bow, rifle and shotgun alongside magical elements like fireballs, frost, electric and telekinesis. You even get your own hellhound to keep you company fight for you, with its own skill tree. Check out the full roadmap over on Steam. It’s worth noting that with over a year to go until launch some of these features might change.

As for the Alpha demo, if you own an Oculus Rift, HTC Vive or Valve Index then you can request access. The developer says the demo: “is a watered down version of the full game but loaded with enough core mechanics to let you get a good feel of Hellsweeper VR.”

Sairento Dev Releasing Demo For New VR Combat Game Hellsweeper Today

Mixed Realms, the developer behind popular VR combat game, Sairento, is releasing a demo for its new title, Hellsweeper VR, today.

The public demo will go live on Steam at some point later today with support for SteamVR headsets. The developer says this is a “watered down version” of the full game that’s missing some modes and features, but has “enough core mechanics” to grasp what the developer is aiming for with the project.

You can head to the developer’s Discord to offer feedback on the experience. Check out some gameplay footage below.

Hellsweeper isn’t a direct sequel to Sairento, but does carry on the theme of pushing the intensity of VR combat. The game offers acrobatic action in which you fight off demons using slides and even backflips. The game employs “semi realistic physics” that allow you to tear enemies in two, throw them at other foes and even jump onto them and ride them around. Alongside swords and other melee weapons, you can also use firearms and spells.

The full version of the game will feature a rogue-lite mode in which players survive three acts with a variety of mission objectives like defeating waves of enemies or surviving a certain amount of time. There will also be a sandbox mode and Mixed Realms plans to add multiplayer features including co-op and PVP. Don’t expect that release come hit anytime soon though; Mixed Realms anticipates launching Early Access in Q3 of next year.

See More of Hellsweeper in New Alpha Trailer

Hellsweeper

In June Sairento VR developer Mixed Realms showcased some very brief, teasing footage of its next project, a gory-looking action title called Hellsweeper. This week the studio has released further details on the videogame as well as releasing a much longer trailer.

Hellsweeper

Described by Mixed Realms as a roguelike combat simulator, the team revealed on Reddit that Hellsweeper will see: “You play as an undead immortal who’s on a mission to take out the scumbags of Hell.” And you’re going to have plenty of abilities to help accomplish that mission, from melee weapons and guns to magical powers where you’ll be able to pick hellish foes up and rip them apart.

Hellsweeper will borrow elements from Sairento keeping its locomotion mechanics and semi-realistic physics. The new project is going to focus on the action rather than constructing an elaborate campaign with a rich narrative. Mixed Realms is very honest about this, remarking: “We don’t think storytelling is our strength (yet!), so instead of trying to develop a subpar campaign, we decided to deploy our limited resources to making the game shine in terms of the gameplay and mechanics. Having said that, we would still offer a background story to give context to the universe of Hellsweeper.”

It might be light on narrative but you’ll probably not notice going toe to toe with giant hellish demons. Being a roguelike videogame Hellsweeper is all about perfecting those runthroughs, dying, then coming back for another round, with every run being different.

Hellsweeper

Development is still in the early stages with the new video showcasing pre-alpha assets. The launch is well over a year away with the current expectation Hellsweeper will hit Oculus and Steam in Q3 2022. Before then, Mixed Realms has confirmed that it’ll roll out a free pre-alpha demo for the community to try, in either August or September.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Hellsweeper, reporting back as more details are released.

Sairento Dev Teases New VR Horror Combat Project

Sairento VR developer Mixed Realms is teasing its new project, and it looks quite different.

The first footage of the game, codenamed Project Hellsweeper, was recently posted on Reddit. While it’s not a direct sequel to Sairento, the developer says it will be a “spiritual successor” to the game’s mechanics, including the work the game did with locomotion and “visceral combat”.

Check out the video above. It shows the player using giant melee weapons and pistols to take down demonic forces. They also summon fireballs, toss axes and, towards the end, split an enemy in two before dashing their heart on the ground. Lovely.

In the same post, the developer confirmed there will be a public beta for the game that will launch in around a month or two. You can register your interest over on an official Discord channel. “We’re bringing the experience of performing movie-worthy stunts and god-like fight sequences to a new level of omg-did-I-just-do-that-in-virtual-reality,” the developer wrote. Given the footage was posted on the Oculus Quest subreddit, it’s a safe bet the game is targetting the standalone headset, but no word yet on possible PC VR and PSVR versions.

Elsewhere, Mixed Realms also just launched a Quest 2-specific update for Sairento VR: Untethered. The patch adds support for 90fps, increases the spawn rate of enemies and adds more blood effects.

Enjoy Massive Saving’s With the Humble Spring Into VR Bundle

Humble Bundle

If you time it right then there can be some great savings to be had on high-quality virtual reality (VR) titles and currently Humble Bundle’s latest is difficult to beat. For only the second time the platform is offering a VR-specific deal where you can get up to eight PC VR titles for an incredible discount.

Borderlands 2 VR

Called the Humble Spring into VR Bundle, the limited time offer allows gamers to unlock a selection of videogames depending on how much they wish to spend, with proceeds helping to support charitable endeavours. So for a minimum of 71p you can pickup zero-g sci-fi title Detached. Bump that up to at least £10.66 GBP and you’ll unlock Star Trek: Bridge Crew, Surgeon Simulator: Experience Reality, Swords of Gurrah and Espire 1: VR Operative.

Literally for a few pence more – £10.77 to be precise – you can add three more titles to that list, Job Simulator, Sairento VR and Borderlands 2 VR. Of course, if you are feeling charitable because you’re saving so much – total price would be £160 for all of them – you can up the bundle donation as you see fit.

The main charity highlighted for the Humble Spring into VR Bundle is Stop AAPI Hate, an organisation described as “a national coalition addressing anti-Asian racism across the U.S.” It was founded by the Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council (A3PCON), Chinese for Affirmative Action (CAA) and San Francisco State University’s Asian American Studies Department. But you can select a different charity should you wish to support one more local to you or focused on a field close to your heart.

ESPIRE

In any case, the Humble Spring into VR Bundle is a great deal if you’ve been looking to expand that VR library with a nice mixture of titles, especially as there’s no Steam sale currently. VRFocus will continue its coverage of the latest VR software and hardware deals, reporting back with further updates.

Sairento PSVR Update Includes 10 New Maps, 5 New Weapons

The PSVR version of Sairento received a long-awaited update this week, which adds new maps and weapons first seen on other platforms last year.

Sairento first launched for PC VR back in 2018. Since then, it’s received a number of updates, alongside Quest and PSVR ports as well. However, the PSVR version started to lag behind with updates, missing some new content that came to other platform last year.

Despite the long delay, developers Mixed Realms confirmed that the bumper update is now finally available for PSVR, adding 10 new maps and 5 new weapons.

“It took us much longer than expected as we have been working from home since March last year and communications was a b*tch. Also, PSVR is a little trickier to optimize for and the approval process takes longer than other platforms,” said developers  Mixed Realms in a blog post. “But a promise is a promise. We wanted to make sure that our PSVR fans get all the goodies our fans on other platforms get.”

The new maps now available on PSVR are Cave, Depot, Marine Outpost, Research Lab, Roof Top, Sanctuary, Slum, Suburb, Subway and Training Hall. The new weapons are Apocalypse, Disintegrator, Figment, IRM3000 and Nobunaga.

There’s also a few bugs that have been fixed, along with improvements and optimizations made to lightmaps, textures and memory management.

Mixed Realms noted that this will be the last update for the game on PSVR. The studio also has two other projects in the works as well — a PC deckbuilding RPG called Gordian Quest and a 2nd unannounced VR game.

You can read more in the PSVR update post from Mixed Realms.

The VR Game Launch Roundup: Five Great Titles Arriving Next Week

August is turning out to be a stellar month for virtual reality (VR) releases, especially when it comes to AAA videogame support from non-VR developers. Yesterday saw Codemasters suddenly surprise everyone by rolling out VR support for DiRT Rally 2.0after staying quiet for months – and next week is going to be a corker as well. There are five titles arriving by Friday 16th, covering a range of platforms and genres.

Red Matter - Screenshot 02

While five videogames may not seem like a lot, there are some rich pickings to be had. From old favourites coming to new platforms to entirely new experiences to be had in VR, if you’re not already engrossed in a VR experience of some sort you soon will be.

No Man’s Sky: Beyond – Hello Games

This is the most high profile launch of next week, with Hello Games updating this sci-fi epic to version 1.7, adding VR support. No Man’s Sky: Beyond will join the likes of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR, Fallout 4 VR, Doom VFR and  Borderlands 2 VR, big-name videogames making the leap to support VR. Originally released in 2016, No Man’s Sky: Beyond will be more immersive than ever, as well as social, with the update also including the Nexus, a social space in this massive procedural universe.

Red Matter – Vertical Robot

Originally an Oculus Rift title released in 2018, developer Vertical Robot will be bringing this sci-fi puzzler to Oculus Quest.  Red Matter is set in a dystopian alternate future where an ongoing cold war ensues between two superpowers; the Atlantic Union and the People’s Republic of Volgravia. You play an astronaut dispatched to an abandoned base on Rhea, one of Saturn’s moons. Your mission is to recover top-secret information that could end the war.

  • Supported platforms: Oculus Quest
  • Launch date: 15th August 2019

Pinball FX2 VR – Zen Studios

Another one for Oculus Quest, this is another port from VR’s past, 2016 in fact. Pinball FX 2 was one of the more surprising titles to feature on Oculus Rift’s launch day, demonstrating how a pastime like pinball can work really well in VR. Proving to be very addictive, the title achieved a full five-stars in VRFocusoriginal review: “Zen Studios has created some remarkable digital recreations of pinball and yet every other version now seems redundant: Pinball FX 2 VR is the way digital pinball is meant to be played.”

  • Supported platforms: Oculus Quest
  • Launch date: 15th August 2019

Time Stall – Force Field Entertainment

From the developer behind Term1nal for Samsung Gear VR and Landfall for Oculus Rift comes Time Stall, the only properly new videogame on this list. Loosely inspired by Quicksilver’s classic Pentagon kitchen scene from X-Men: Days of Future Past, the gameplay involves time manipulation and puzzles, freezing moments in time to complete challenges in order to save all the guests onboard a luxury spaceship.

  • Supported platforms: Oculus Quest
  • Launch date: 15th August 2019

Sairento VR – Mixed Realms

For the last videogame on the list, VRFocus has Sairento VR for PlayStation VR. Yes, Sairento VR has been available for over a month now via PlayStation Store and on retail shelves in Europe but next Tuesday Perp Games will be launching the title in physical form in North America. A badass combat experience filled with guns and swords, the main hook in Sairento VR is the free range of movement because you’re a deadly ninja who can effortlessly kill opponents whilst performing somersaults, triple jumps, side flips, wall runs, and power slides.

  • Supported platforms: PlayStation VR – North American retail stores
  • Launch date: 13th August 2019

Sairento VR’s Physical Edition Coming to North American Shelves in August

Two weeks ago Mixed Realms and Perp Games released Sairento VR as a physical videogame for those European gamers that like an actual disk to go in their PlayStation VR collection. A North American edition was always on the cards, and now a release date has been confirmed.

SairentoVR

Sairento VR for PlayStation VR has been available to NA players for just over a week via PlayStation Store, but for those interested in picking one up from retail shelves you’ll need to wait another four weeks, with the release taking place on Tuesday, 13th August.

Included on the disk will be all the base game weapons and the “Sairento VR – Weapons Pack” DLC from the PC version. These are the Kusarigama which acts like a kama in close quarters combat but can be extended into a sickle and chain and used as a flailing weapon. The Kigiri claw weapon, with the secondary capability of ejecting the claw blades as deadly projectiles. And lastly the Slugger, a unique SMG that is plasma-based and uses a heat management system instead of physical rounds for ammo.

Other than that everything else is the same. So you’ll be able to perform somersaults, multiple jumps, side flips, wall runs, and power slides as you hack, slash, duck, and weave through hordes of enemies. A single-player campaign mode puts you into the ranks of the Silent Ones, a covert organization which practices the code and martial arts of the ancient samurais and ninjas.

Sairento VR - Kigiri

VRFocus reviewed Sairento VR in 2018 on PC, giving it four stars, saying: “Sairento VR is one of the best free-flowing combat titles available for VR headsets, showcasing how far development of VR locomotion has come.”

Last month the studio also released Sairento Untethered for Oculus Quest, a stripped-down version which has five maps, simply due to the processing power of the standalone headset. But Mixed Realms is working on several updates to improve that edition.

Sairento VR is coming to North American retail for PlayStation VR on 13th August retailing for $39.99 USD. Pre-orders are available now through AmazonBest Buy and GameStop. For further updates from Mixed Realms, keep reading VRFocus.

‘Sairento VR’ Launches on PSVR in Europe, Arriving in North America Next Week

Singapore-based studio Mixed Realms today released their high-flying ninja combat game Sairento VR (2018) in Europe on PSVR; the North American release is slated to arrive next week.

Sairento VR was first released on Steam Early Access for PC VR back in late 2016, and while it launched out of EA more than a year ago, we’ve been waiting to see just when it would come to PSVR.

Customers in Europe can either download (PS Store link) for £35/€40 or pick up a physical copy at retail stores starting today. North American customers will have to wait until July 9th to download, and August 13th for the hard copy.

The game is also currently available on Steam (Vive, Rift, Index), Oculus Store (Rift), Viveport (Vive, Rift, Windows VR).

Sairento VR is a mission-driven, first-person combat game that’s set in near-future Japan. As a member of ‘the Silent Ones’, you use your forbidden knowledge of martial arts to fight across the game’s single-player campaign mode, letting you hone your slow-motion, high-flying ninja moves as you shoot pistols and physically slice your katanas at the game’s various enemies.

Outside of the campaign mode, the PSVR version is said to include extra missions as well as two-player co-op.

Check out the PSVR launch trailer below.
