Checkout the Latest Screenshots for ROM: Extraction

If you like your virtual reality (VR) shooting videogames then a new title is set to launch on HTC Vive this coming week. Created by new studio First Contact Entertainment, ROM: Extraction is a gallery style first-person shooter (FPS) set in a sci-fi universe with extraterrestrial robots. Yesterday VRFocus reported on the first teaser trailer being released, a cinematic look at the enemies players will face. But to see what the title will actually be like, take a look at the screenshots below.

With a look not too dissimilar to Survios’ Raw Data, ROM: Extraction a time bending mechanic called ‘Reflex’. Rather than having an arsenal of guns, players throw orbs at approaching enemies to destroy them. In their other hand is an energy pistol which has two functions, the first is to ignite the orbs for more strategic kills, while the other unleashes the time mechanic.

As the screenshots below showcase, players are centralized in a room with waves of enemy robots attacking from all sides. They also detail First Contact Entertainment’s team pedigree – made up of VR veterans and AAA videogame talent – with highly detailed artwork and graphical polish throughout.

ROM: Extraction is set to launch for HTC Vive on Wednesday, 7th December. An Oculus Rift version has been confirmed, but not a release date.

ROM: Extraction First Teaser Trailer Released, Launch Dated

New virtual reality (VR) studio First Contact Entertainment revealed the first details for its upcoming videogame ROM: Extraction last month. Inspired by classic arcade shooters, the studio only released one image, showing a vicious looking robot. Now its released a teaser trailer along with a confirmed release date.

First Contact Entertainment describes ROM: Extraction’s gameplay mechanic as “Throw, Slow & Shoot.” Whereby players will have the ability to slow down time – called “Reflex” power – to help defend themselves against these dangerous looking, extraterrestrial robots. The videogame will be a first-person shooter (FPS) using motion-based controls, three difficulty settings and global and local leaderboards.

ROM: Extraction will see an initial release on HTC Vive next week, on 7th December. Support has also been confirmed for Oculus Rift, although no date has been given, but with the developers specific mention of motion controls, it’s likely the title will support Oculus Touch as well.

On the videogames Steam listing First Contact Entertainment also notes plans for future DLC releases. These include more gameplay modes, further levels, a co-op multiplayer, character skins for multiplayer, additional enemies with new attributes, and power-ups and orbs with special properties.

Exclusive: ‘ROM: Extraction’ Teaser Trailer Reveals Terrifying Alien Robots

When we first broke the news about ROM: Extraction by First Contact with our hands-on reveal last month, we didn’t have any footage to show you — only art work and a few teaser images. Now, that is unfortunately not a whole lot different, as we just have a brief and tantalizing teaser trailer along with a handful of new screenshots.

The below trailer does a wonderful job of setting an ominous tone and building up suspense about the game, but it doesn’t actually show much else. Luckily, you won’t have to wait long to see more, as the game’s Steam page is now live announcing a December 7th release date with both HTC Vive and Oculus Rift support listed. It’s expected to release on the Oculus Home store shortly afterwards as well — motion controllers are required.

According to a prepared statement provided to UploadVR, “ROM: Extraction is a pick-up- and-play, addictive classic arcade shooter, built natively for VR. The heart of the gameplay mechanic is ‘Throw, Slow, and Shoot.’ Players will defend themselves against extraterrestrial robots by using the power to slow down time – called ‘Reflex’ power – for an unprecedented style of strategic combat. The game features the first-person immersion of VR, intuitive, motion-based controls, multiple difficulty settings and global and local leaderboards.”

During our demo, we got to see this in action and came away impressed. The visual fidelity, exciting physics, and potential for expansion upon the base concept were all exciting prospects. The studio’s talent and history of game development shows through in the production quality alone.

When ROM: Extraction launches next week on Steam it will be a single player only experience, but plans are in place to add cooperative multiplayer for free soon, in addition to new levels, weapons, enemies, and abilities to help further diversify the gameplay. It’s a simple game, but the team hopes that the core gameplay loop is addictive enough to keep gamers coming back for more.

First Contact Entertainment Reveal Details for Debut VR Title ROM: Extraction

Early last month California-based indie developer First Contact Entertainment announced it had secured $5 million USD in funding to create virtual reality (VR) experiences. At the time, the team – made up of VR veterans and AAA videogame talent –  hadn’t made any announcements about what it was working on, that’s now changed. Recently the studio has revealed its first VR project, ROM: Extraction, with an initial teasing image and some gameplay details.

As the team is made up from companies such as Starbreeze, Blizzard, Treyarch and Infinity Ward, a shooter was always going to be on the cards and that’s just what ROM: Extraction is.

First Contact Entertainment describes the title as a fast paced homage to classic arcade shooting videogames. Sci-fi-based, set decades into the future, ROM: Extraction sounds like it’ll be a gallery style title in which players have to survive against an attacking defence system, with a storyline based around a mission to obtain volatile energy matter.

“With the announcement of our first title, ROM: Extraction, we are excited to be pushing the medium forward by exploring new methods of VR gameplay,” said Hess Barber, co-founder and president of First Contact Entertainment. “The game is inspired by classic arcade shooters, but adds several modern twists, such as the ability to slow down time combined with action-based movements of skill and timing unique only to VR. We look forward to sharing our innovations with the VR community, and can’t wait to get their feedback.”

ROM: Extraction will support both Oculus Rift and HTC Vive although First Contact Entertainment hasn’t yet stated when that’ll be.
