PlayStation 5’s HD Camera Isn’t PlayStation VR Compatible

PlayStation 5 - HD Camera

There’s a month to go until PlayStation 5 begins to roll out worldwide with Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) previously reassuring fans that PlayStation VR will be supported. However, it’s not entirely cut and dry as PlayStation 4’s camera needs an adapter whilst the new HD Camera won’t work with the virtual reality (VR) headset it’s been confirmed.

PlayStation VR

A recent blog posting notes that: “the PS5 HD Camera is not compatible with PS VR on PS5.” So owners will definitely need that PlayStation Camera adaptor previously mentioned which SIE will be providing for free. Currently, no details regarding what the adaptor looks like or how to order it have been revealed – so there’s no telling if they’ll be available for the launch of PlayStation 5.

As for the HD Camera, that’s another telling indication that SIE has a new headset in the works – as many patents have indicated. If the new camera can’t track the old headset then a new system could be in place. Hopefully, a PlayStation VR 2 won’t need the HD Camera, going down the route of inside-out tracking like the Oculus Quest.

Additionally, while most PlayStation VR videogames will work on PlayStation 5, SIE has confirmed a couple that won’t, Crytek’s Robinson: The Journey and DWVR by Mad Triangles.

PlayStation 5

PlayStation 5 will see a split launch worldwide in November, with the console available in the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea on 12th November. The rest of the world will then have to wait until 19th November to get their hands on the new hardware. The standard disc drive edition will retail for £449.99 GBP/$499.99 USD whilst the Digital Edition will cost £359.99/$399.99.

Also worth remembering is that PlayStation Move, Aim and DualShock 4 wireless controllers will work with PlayStation 5 but the latter controller won’t support PlayStation 5 titles. For further updates on SIE’s VR plans, keep reading VRFocus.

Crytek’s Robinson: The Journey For PSVR Won’t Work On PS5

Just over a month away from the upcoming console’s release, Sony has finally detailed the small list of PS4 games that do not work on the PS5. There are only two PSVR titles on the list of incompatible games fortunately. The games are Robinson: The Journey and DWVR.

DWVR is a single-player action-adventure shooter that combines mystical Indiana Jones-style elements with swords, guns, and magic spells available for $14.99 on PSN. We never got around to trying this one for ourselves, but if you were really hoping to see what it would play like on PS5 you’re unfortunately out of luck. DWVR is also available on Steam for $14.99.

Robinson: The Journey On PSVR

The only other PSVR game listed is Robinson: The Journey from Crytek. Back when Robinson first came out it was a big deal as a prominent PSVR-exclusive that featured gorgeous visuals in a strange, alien world overflowing with dinosaurs. It also featured a climbing system reminiscent of Crytek’s own The Climb rock-climbing game.

New copies of Robinson: The Journey for PS4 are quite pricey, going for around $60 on Amazon. But you can also grab it on PSN for just $29.99. This was one of the first VR games to launch at $60 back in 2016. Interestingly, it’s actually cheaper on PC, listed at just $19.99 on Steam.

The full list of PS4 games that will not work on PS5 includes:

  • Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma Volume One
  • DWVR
  • Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
  • Joe’s Diner
  • Just Deal With It!
  • Robinson: The Journey (Our PSVR Review)
  • Shadow Complex Remastered
  • Shadwen
  • TT Isle of Man – Ride on the Edge 2
  • We Sing

Notably, Hitman GO actually does exist in VR — on Rift ($9.99), Go ($7.99), and Gear VR ($7.99) — but it doesn’t look like the PS4 version ever got PSVR support, inexplicably. We were big fans of it back in 2016. It’s essentially a top-down stealth puzzle game with some Hitman flavors.

robinson: the journey featured image psvr

Previously we reported that Sony’s CEO, Jim Ryan, stated “99%” of PS4 games would work on PS5 and it seems he was pretty spot-on with that estimation. That being said, we still don’t know specifics about PSVR compatibility other than it requires a “free” adapter. Although, we do have confirmation that the new PS5 HD Camera does not support PSVR, as expected.

PSVR’s Eden Tomorrow Feels Like The Robinson Sequel We’ll Never Get

eden tomorrow psvr adventure

It’s a little surreal to be stepping back into the world of Eden Tomorrow. I first tried this new VR adventure game back at Gamescom 2015. Its depiction of an alien planet enraptured me. It focused on discovery just as much as it did danger. But it’s been four years since then. You might think the magic had faded by now.

Today’s new demo suggests it hasn’t.

Eden Tomorrow is shaping up to be the closest thing we’ll get to a Robinson: The Journey sequel. But, with any luck, it’ll be even more than that. This seems to be a game that isn’t afraid to, well, make you afraid. The 20-minute gameplay slice available now on PSVR is book ended by two close encounters with an alien dragon, and there’s a springy jump scare towards the end that won’t please those with a fear of needles. But its willingness to alarm contributes to its intrepid spirit.

This feels like Robinson but perhaps without the training wheels, a game that really wants to make you feel on edge. Within minutes of starting, I’m frozen on the spot by the steely glare of a monster that fancies me for its lunch, helplessly (and embarrassingly) shrieking a little when it takes a snap. Later on I’ve got my back against the wall as I traverse a bottomless canyon, and I’m throwing my head from side-to-side as I balance over beams. These were dangers we didn’t see until the last hour of Crytek’s VR adventure all introduced in the game’s opening.

It’s darker, too. There’s a lot more death in Eden Tomorrow, which suggests the story might tread more interesting ground. Hopefully it transcends the obvious movie influences and finds something genuinely new.

The Robinson comparisons don’t end with the setting and genre, though. You’ll sometimes control a floating AI companion named Newton, who bears a striking resemblance to HIGs. That’s not to say he’s a carbon copy; he’s got his own level of charm in how his three-pronged claws flutter and float, erratically jumping in and out of storage panels like an awkward Briton that doesn’t know what to do with his hands. No points for guessing which way his accent leans, then.

Visually the game probably won’t ever match Crytek’s lush jungles and boggy swamps. But that’s not to say Eden Tomorrow doesn’t show promise. Environments are impressively detailed and sharp and character and creature animations are convincing. The color palette is somewhat monochrome in the demo but hopefully that’ll change. I’m looking forward to seeing what developer Soulpix does when it really flexes its muscles.

The question right now is if the developer can deliver on the promising start. As VR has matured these older, gamepad-driven adventure games have begun to feel dated. And there are traces of that here, including awkward transitions to simple actions. Sliding on a slope, for example, has the screen and music fade out before you slip down, and then does so again. It’s just a little disconnected and jarring.

Quite of bit of hope in this one, then. Soulpix says the full version of Eden Tomorrow will launch in Q1 2019 and will last around four to five hours. We’ll have final impressions around then.

A platform title from the team at Sony Japan Studio, Astro Bot Rescue Mission was well received when it launched last month for PlayStation VR. VRFocus commented in its review: “While Astro Bot Rescue Mission isn’t quite as charming as Moss, or as superbly crafted as Mario Odyssey, it is a great old-school platformer for the VR era, bringing some of the best features of both 2D and 3D platformers of old and incorporating VR in a way that doesn’t feel awkward. Regular VRFocus readers will be very well aware of some of the deals currently going about, and now German developer Crytek is getting in on bargains as well.

The studio has three of its videogames on sale this month, two of which are virtual reality (VR) experiences. First up you have Robinson: The Journey, supporting Oculus Rift and HTC Vive – the PlayStation VR version isn’t discounted.

Robinson: The Journey casts players as Robin, a boy that’s left stranded on an alien world called Tyson III after his ship crash lands. But Robin isn’t alone, he’s accompanied by an AI companion called HIGS, and together they must survive the harsh environment and dangerous inhabitants as they search for the lost crew, solving puzzles and unearthing the planet’s secrets along the way. It’s currently available on Steam for $29.99 USD/£26.24 GBP until 28th November.

Crytek Adds HTC Vive & Oculus Touch Support to ‘Robinson: The Journey’

Originally launched in November last year as a PSVR exclusive, Crytek’s Robinson: The Journey (2016) made its way early this year to Oculus Rift via Oculus Home and also eventually Steam too. Critically missing however was official support for HTC Vive and any support for motion controllers.

Now, Crytek has finally launched an update on Steam which includes official support for HTC Vive, and full support for both Vive and Oculus Touch motion controllers. Oculus Home will also see an update including Touch support today.

Like Crytek’s The Climb (2016), Robinson was initially built for gamepad-only input. Although Crytek eventually made a major update to The Climb which brought Touch support to the game, Robinson has sat on both Steam and the Oculus Store this part year with only gamepad support to its name.

A few months after launch of both titles however, Crytek unexpectedly shuttered all of their branches outside their Frankfurt and Kiev studios, which could point to why the company has been so sparse with critical updates to their VR games.

Following a young boy names Robinson and his chipper AI pal HIGS who’ve crash landed on a planet inhabited by dinosaurs, Robinson was initially lauded for its patently lush visuals and life-like dinos. Still priced at its original launch price tag of $40, the game currently holds a ‘Mixed’ rating on Steam, and a [3.5/5] star rating on Oculus Home.

Crytek Adds HTC Vive Support to Robinson: The Journey

Crytek’s dinosaur filled sci-fi adventure Robinson: The Journey first arrived for PlayStation VR back in November 2016 before being ported to Oculus Rift a few months later. Today, the studio has announced that HTC Vive owners will now be able to play the title.

The Steam update which Crytek has released not only adds HTC Vive support but also Oculus Touch – which was already available through Oculus Home. Players who own Robinson: The Journey for Oculus Rift on Steam will also be able to use HTC Vive.

“We are very excited to be bringing Robinson to a new platform and to introduce Vive owners to the mysterious planet of Tyson III,” said Producer Fatih Özbayram in a statement. “The game fully supports Vive’s motion controllers, and we’ve mapped a wide range of actions to player’s hand movements which delivers a new, really immersive way to experience the game.”

This is Crytek’s first release for HTC Vive available for download from Steam for $39.99 USD / €39.99 EUR / £34.99 GBP.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Crytek, reporting back with any further VR updates.

CryEngine 5.4.0 Preview Adds Robinson: The Journey Tech

Crytek has launched the preview build for the latest edition of CryEngine V, known as ‘CryEngine 5.4.0’. Available to all developers now, this new build includes more than 620 fixes and tweaks, as well as a support for Vulkan API and a new feature derived from the virtual reality (VR) title Robinson: The Journey.

In CryEngine 5.4.0, the new “Extended Detail Bending” toggle, found in the vegetation shader, provides artists with much more control over detail bending on their branches. For example, new bending allows not only small micro movement on leaves, but also whole branches of trees or chunks of grass. Through this expansion, artists can have one big chunk of grass with phased animations so that movement looks natural. Aiding in the variations, there is also the option to apply a world-space mapped noise texture to simulate random breeze for variations to the movement.

According to Crytek, “The history behind this feature comes out of our Robinson: The Journey development and how we needed a more accurate and physically dependent bending solution for our vegetation.”

Robinson: The Journey is available now for PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift, while CryEngine 5.4.0 can be downloaded direct from the official website. It should be noted that CryEngine 5.4.0 is a preview build, and so backing up any existing projects before updating to this version is highly recommended. VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest details on Crytek’s work in the VR space.
