Watch: Incredible Resident Evil 2 VR Mod Has First-Person And Motion Controls

We’ve played the incredible Resident Evil 2 VR mod from praydog, with 10 minutes of gameplay below.

We first reported that the modder was working on VR integration for Capcom’s two recent remakes back in August. Work on Resident Evil 2 specifically has come along pretty far since then, so much so that we were able to get our first hands-on with the upcoming mod and play through some of the opening sequences in the game. Take a look below.

This mod gives you optional first-person support with motion controls (you can also play it in the standard third-person view with a controller). It’s not available to all just yet, but it’s coming soon and it’s really taking shape. It’s incredible to experience the game’s intricately detailed world in first-person, and shining the flashlight in VR feels great. The 2019 remake of the game is also one of the scarier entries in the series, and that definitely shines through here. Just take note that you’ll need a beefy PC to handle the strain.

The Resident Evil series is no stranger to VR, of course. Resident Evil 7 remains one of the best PSVR games to date and last month Capcom teamed with Meta to release Resident Evil 4 VR on the Oculus Quest 2, which we thought was great. We’ve also still got our fingers crossed that the recently-released Resident Evil 8 will also get VR support when the PS5 VR headset finally launches.

Resident Evil 2 & 3 VR Mods In The Works

VR modder praydog is working on mods for Capcom’s recent remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3.

A first (and very early) look at the mod was posted online today. It shows footage from inside Raccoon City Police Department before moving out into the city in a sequence seen in Resident Evil 3.

Take a look below but, again, the mod is very early on so you’ll have to excuse the rubbery arms and side-by-side recording.

Even with those issues considered, though, this seems like impressive work. Both Resident Evil 2 and 3 are played in third-person, so praydog has not only had to get them running in first-person but also implement motion controls for the guns.

These are remakes of the original PlayStation games that released for PC, PS4 and Xbox One a few years back. Resident Evil 2 in particular was incredibly well-received, and we shudder at the mere thought of meeting either the massive Tyrant or the dreaded Nemesis in VR. In fact we already saw the former inside headsets in a Japan-exclusive arcade experience in 2019.

No word on when the mods might release just yet but we’ll let you know as soon as we heard word.

Resident Evil 7 does of course already support PSVR but the game was in first-person. Earlier this year Capcaom also released the first-person Resident Evil 8 but there was no VR support to speak of. We’re hoping that support might be introduced for Sony’s PS5 VR headset, which is expected to launch next year. Meanwhile, Facebook is developing an official version of Resident Evil 4 for the Oculus Quest 2, which is expected to launch later this year.

That makes the first Resident Evil one of the few entries in the mainline series not to get some sort of VR support. Who’s going to change that?

Capcom: Don’t Expect VR Mode for ‘Resident Evil 2’ Remake

It looks like the UK’s Daily Star had the opportunity to reveal a little more behind why Capcom’s horror-adventure Resident Evil 2 remake, slated to release in early 2019, most likely isn’t getting a VR mode after all.

Before the E3 2018 Sony showcase reveal, many VR fans theorized that the long-awaited remake of Resident Evil 2 (1998) could possibly follow in the steps of the company’s latest VR breakout success, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017), which featured a much-lauded PSVR mode.

UK tabloid Daily Star sat down with Capcom producers Tsuyoshi Kanda and Yoshiaki Hirabayashi at E3 last month, revealing a little more behind the reasoning for the game’s lack of VR mode:

“We’re not thinking about VR support currently, given that the camera perspective and the over-the-shoulder choice would mean that VR is not the best way to present the game,” Tsuyoshi Kanda said. “VR doesn’t match the vision for us,” he concluded.

While it’s good the producers don’t want to implement an imperfect solution for VR gamers, it’s a sad to put a nail in the coffin so soon—especially for a game series that garnered some serious love from the PSVR community.

Only a few days after launch of Resident Evil 7, nearly 10% of the registered players were enjoying it in VR. Awards were aplenty too, as it earned a Golden Joystick for Best VR Game of 2017 and Best AR/VR Game at the 2017 Game Awards.
