Gunball Shoots Up Oculus Rift on Steam

REDspace has announced the release of Gunball, their virtual reality (VR) sports/shooter hybrid, for Oculus Rift. The action-packed videogame was initially released for HTC Vive in June, and since then players all over the world have been embracing the clay pigeon shooting inspired high-score challenge.

GunballIn Gunball, players serve up balls and shoot them with guns, rocketing them high into the air. Competitors are placed in the centre of an arena where they participate in timed rounds, with the goal of shooting the balls into rings for points quickly and accurately, accumulating the highest score possible before time expires.

“We’ve been thrilled with the response to Gunball, from both new VR users and pros,” says Jeremy McCurdy, Gunball Game Designer and Games Technical Lead at REDspace. “Our goal was always to create a fun experience that would appeal and entertain everyone, while also allowing them to see just how awesome VR is.”

The videogame features two themed environments: “Stadium,” an audience packed sports arena; and the explosive “Rainbow Volcano” – each with five different goal ring layouts featuring varying obstacles per environment.

Gunball is available to purchase now for both HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, priced at $14.99 on Steam. VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest details on Gunball and other VR titles from REDspace.

REDspace’s VR Sports-Shooter Gunball Launches on HTC Vive

Today, REDspace Games has launched its virtual reality (VR) sports-shooter Gunball for HTC Vive, releasing a new trailer as well as several screenshots showcasing what to expect.

Gunball is an over the top, fast-paced arena sport with players competing in the Gunball League. With similarities to tennis, Gunball requires players to serve balls then shoot them at targets placed around the arena. These targets all have allotted points, with players having to score as many as possible in a certain time.

Designed to be easy to pickup and play by VR newbies, Gunball features two environments to play in: Stadium, a vibrant sports arena and Rainbow Volcano. Each arena then has five levels to play through, each mixing up the difficulty and layout of the targets.

“With Gunball,we feel we’ve created the ideal ‘jumping in’ point for new VR users,” said Jeremy McCurdy, Gunball Game Designer and Games Technical Lead at REDspace in a statement. “Built around a comfortable experience but with a deep level of skill underneath it, we feel this game is great to show off VR to friends who may have never experienced it. But, it’s also an amazing skill-based exercise for VR veterans as well.”

VRFocus previewed the title last week saying: “Gunball is a lighthearted arcade/sports experience that’s not trying to rewrite the VR rule book. There’s not a massive amount of content but what is there is great fun to play – and highly energetic if you really go for it.”

Gunball is available today at a discounted rate, dropping the cost from $14.99 USD down to $9.75 USD until 5th July 2017.

Preview: Gunball – A Highscore Shooting Workout

Indie developers make up the mainstay of virtual reality (VR) content producers, creating a smorgasbord of experiences from quick fire, pickup and play titles to lengthier story driven adventures. For those that like their VR videogames in the first category REDspace Games has come up with an innovative little title called Gunball for HTC Vive, which is all about scoring points in rapid fire rounds of gameplay.

The premise of Gunball is simple enough, placed inside an arena you have to get a ball though various point allotted targets as quickly as possible to achieve the best score you can. Nothing too amazing there, but it’s the gameplay mechanic that’s most intriguing. To score points you need to launch a ball at a target, but this isn’t dodgeball, you don’t throw the ball. Instead you’re provided with a gun to shoot it at your intended target, which is easy enough to pick up, but trickier when going for the longer shots.

Gunball

Think of Gunball in a similar vein to tennis or badminton, you essentially need to ‘serve’ then smash the ball towards one of the brightly coloured hoops. These vary in size and distance depending on their points value. Up close you get ten point targets while way out in the distance are the 10,000 pointers. And don’t expect these to be stationary either. They’ll undulate around the arena disappearing behind the smaller point targets so timing is everything.

There’s also another facet to attaining the biggest score and that’s airtime. Shoot the ball directly out of your hand and you won’t get a multiplier. Throw it up into the air and the longer you wait the bigger that multiplier becomes, growing from 2x all the way up to 10x. It’s a simple mechanic but it does help to add that extra tactical depth to a title that would’ve been too basic without it.

Gunball

Gunball has two areas to play through, the Stadium and Rainbow Volcano, each of which is divided into five levels. As you’d expect each of the levels offer a different combination of target layouts to make attaining those highscores as tricky as possible. On a first playthrough you’ll get past every level in around thirty minutes or so – they all have an allotted time limit – after which it’s a case of replaying them to improve your score. While this method is great for players that just want to kill a few minutes here and there, Gunball would definitely benefit from an expanded selection.

From this early look, Gunball is a lighthearted arcade/sports experience that’s not trying to rewrite the VR rule book. There’s not a massive amount of content but what is there is great fun to play – and highly energetic if you really go for it. It’s certainly one to showcase to VR newbies as you don’t need to move anywhere and the controls are spot on so if they miss it’s their own fault. Whether its appeal will extend to the more hardcore VR players out there is another matter.

HTC Vive owners will be reloading their guns on June 28th 2017 when REDspace Games release Gunball, their new sports-shooter virtual reality (VR) hybrid. This is one that fans of chasing high scores will want to see.

Gunball takes place an environment similar to a baseball stadium, with your avatar in the centre, picking up and firing balls to scored targets hanging in the air. Using the HTC Vive tracked motion controllers players can instinctively reach out and lift balls into the air before shooting them at their desired target.

It’s easy to pick up, but hitting the smallest – and most rewarding – targets will be a challenge that high score chasers will enjoy.

In our screenshots below you can see a variety of stadiums and scored targets – why go for a target offering 10 points, when a moving target offering 2000 is so much more alluring? Players will be able to turn 360 degrees to get the best views and shots of all the targets available to them.

Jeremy McCurdy, Gunball Game Designer has said of the new release; “With Gunball we wanted to provide players with a fun, engrossing experience that anyone could instantly understand and be drawn to.”

McCurdy continues; “Built around a comfortable experience but with a deep level of skill underneath it, we feel this game is perfect for whether you want a quick diversion for a few games or if you want to play for hours solo or with friends.”

Gunball will be available on Steam on June 28th 2017 for HTC Vive owners – take a look at our screenshots below for a better idea of what to expect!

Sport-Shooter Hybrid Title Gunball Coming To HTC Vive

Developer REDspace Games have announced that upcoming virtual reality (VR) sport-meets-shooter hybrid title Gunball will be coming to HTC Vive from the 28th June.

Inspired by fast-paced sport-action multiplayer titles such as Rocket League, Gunball is a fictional arena sport where players try out for the Gunball League by getting balls into hoops, only instead of striking the balls with a bat or a racquet, players shoot the balls with guns to sent them high into the air.

Players are placed in the centre of an arena with the aim of shooting balls into goal rings to score points, with the aim of getting the highest score possible before time runs out.

Seemingly trying to catch the attention of the Esports community, Gunball has been designed with a simple control scheme that people new to VR can pick up quickly, but the developers have sought to add depth for experiences players by incorporating things like trick shots that can rack up large point scores. The title has two environments themes, a sports stadium packed with Gunball fans cheering the players on, and a colourful ‘rainbow volcano’ that adds a touch of explosive danger.

“With Gunball we wanted to provide players with a fun, engrossing experience that anyone could instantly understand and be drawn to,” says Jeremy McCurdy, Gunball Game Designer and Games Technical Lead at REDspace. “Built around a comfortable experience but with a deep level of skill underneath it, we feel this game is perfect for whether you want a quick diversion for a few games or if you want to play for hours solo or with friends.”

Gunball will launch on Steam on 28th June 2017 with a launch price of $9.75, a 35% discount on the regular price of $14.99. A trailer for the title is available to view below.

VRFocus will bring you further information on Gunball and other upcoming VR titles as it becomes available.
