Void Racer: Extreme Review – Tron Meets F-Zero For Oculus Quest

Void Racer: Extreme is a sci-fi racing game that marries the hover bikes and neon lights from Tron with the blazing fast speeds found in F-Zero and WipEout to deliver an exhilarating racing game for Oculus Quest that’s only a little rough around the edges.

You might not know this, but Void Racer: Extreme is actually a sequel to the Oculus Go game, Void Racer. The biggest limitation of the original game was the lack of 6DOF movement, which is really noticeable and frustrating when driving something like a Tron-style light cycle. Not being able to lean and move your head is pretty annoying. Now Void Racer: Extreme is a bigger, better, and more fully-formed iteration of the same concept.

In Void Racer: Extreme, you steer the bike with only one hand by rotating the controller while pulling the trigger to accelerate. You can do this while resting your arm on your lap or a table if you want, but I found it far more fun and immersive to reach out into the air with both arms and lean my body from side-to-side as I played. For me, that made a big difference.

On paper it sounds a little lazy that the developer didn’t actually force you to lean your body or steer with your hands realistically, but in my experience those games never actually turn out very well (looking at you VR Karts) so doing something that’s more of an approximation, while still allowing for movement in order to aid immersion, seems like a happy medium.

The closest competitor I’d identify for Void Racer: Extreme is probably Death Lap, but that’s more Mad Max than Tron, although it does have similar mechanics and ideas with its combat-style racing premise. However in Death Lap you spend far more time aiming and shooting weapons, whereas in Void Racer: Extreme all items are just controlled by looking around and pressing a button.

One mechanic that isn’t immediately obvious in Void Racer: Extreme unless you read the ‘How To Play’ documentation in the main menu is that all of the areas in a level that aren’t clearly laid out as the track are what’s called the Void. Driving in the Void drains your battery over time until eventually you can’t move until it recharges. This adds a layer of strategy to Void Racer, similar to the damaging zones in F-Zero games, in that you can cut across Void areas for shortcuts but only as long as your battery will last.

It’s not a bad concept, but it could be executed better with more satisfying presentation. Small things like the music being too repetitive and quiet, sound effects not really connecting with things that happen clearly, and even just the track art style generally having a slightly unfinished vibe. None of that stuff is a deal-breaker on its own, but it does leave a lot of room for improvement still.

Boasting over 100 career mode races, 12 different tracks, time trials, and online multiplayer, it’s pretty fully-featured for a Quest-exclusive VR racing game. It’s just a shame there isn’t more depth inside each of those bullet points.

void racer extreme gameplay 3

While technically, yes, there are “over 100 career mode races” most of those are just variations off of the same handful of formats. Beyond straight up races there are time trials, ring collection mini games, and a few others that try and spice things up. It does a decent job of funneling you towards new content, but it’s not as robust as it could have been.

Other than unlocking a couple more bike options there isn’t any progression or customization to speak of. Since I can lean around, inspect my bike’s HUD, and appreciate the environment a lot here it would have been nice to be able to upgrade or change designs a bit more. Unlocking new skins or light trails or something to that effect would add a lot of replayability.

Finally, every time I’ve tried to find a match this week the lobby has been completely empty. This isn’t really a fault of the game itself, but it’s definitely hard to enjoy it to its fullest without people to play against.

Void Racer: Extreme Review Final Impressions

You could almost look at the original Void Racer as a prototype VR game that laid the foundation for Void Racer: Extreme. This time around it feels like a complete game and handles far better than I’d ever expect, but is still lacking enough meat on its bones to earn a blanket recommendation. Void Racer: Extreme does a lot right and if you’re seeking those very specific Tron meets F-Zero / WipEout style vibes, then this will absolutely scratch your itch. With a stronger multiplayer community, more varied Career mode goals, more bikes, and a bit more polished presentation this would be a definitive VR racing game. As it stands, it’s still a good foundation to build from though.

Redout: Enhanced Edition

Redout is a tribute to the old racing monsters such as F-Zero, WipeOut, Rollcage, and POD.It is designed to be an uncompromising, fast, tough and satisfying driving experience, soaked in that vertigo that stands at the core of the arcade racing genre. The floating system and driving models are based on physics: each turn, slope, hard braking, acceleration, each turn and twist of the track will apply a unique force to the ship. A sharp low-polygon style blends meshes and terrains with the latest state-of-the-art shading and lighting effects provided by the Unreal Engine 4, creating beautiful and instantly recognisable aesthetics. Breezy coastlines, eerie frozen landscapes, vast desert plains: the melancholic, dystopian atmosphere of a semi abandoned Earth is the background for the most high-speed, tense and beautiful futuristic racing clashes.”

Redout: Enhanced Edition is available now for £8.99 (GBP) down from £29.99.

Along Together screenshot

Along Together

“Despite the input system, VRFocus would argue that Along Together is not a point-and-click videogame as Turbo Button suggest. It’s much closer to a platform-puzzle videogame in that the experience is less about objectives and item collection, more concerned with path-finding. This certainly isn’t a negative comment however, as Along Together is a welcome addition to the Google Daydream’s software catalogue regardless of how you choose to define it. With a pleasing, chunky and colourful art style and a fine assortment of puzzles, Along Together is an easy recommendation for Google Daydream owners.” – Read VRFocus’ Editor Kevin Joyce’s review of Along Together.

Along Together is currently £11.62 (GBP) down from £15.49.

Smashing The Battle

Smashing The Battle VR

“In the year 2085, a huge multiplex construction site becomes a victim of a massive scale hacking incident. Due to the hack, the construction robots start to attack the workers on site. What could have possibly happened? Now you can witness it yourself, with two unique heroines to control and two different stories to unfold!”

Smashing The Battle VR is currently available for £6.39 (GBP) down from £7.99.

ADR1FT

ADR1FT proves that Oculus VR’s comfort ratings are not to be taken lightly. This may be a launch title for the Oculus Rift, but you might consider easing yourself in with some of the ‘Comfortable’ and ‘Moderate’ experiences before jumping into the deep end. That will be an understandably frustrating proposition for many fans, but if there were to be any ‘doctor’s orders’ about getting started with VR, it would be this.” – Read VRFocus’ Staff Writer Jamie Feltham’s preview of ADR1FT.

ADR1FT is available for only £3.74 (GBP) right now on sale from £14.99.

That is all for this week but remember that VRFocus gathers all the best sales and deals every week, so check back next weekend at the same time to discover more.

Redout Darstellung in VR ungenügend

High Octane Racer Redout Arrives for Rift, Vive and OSVR

If fast futuristic racing videogames such as F-Zero and Wipeout where always your favourite titles, then a new release from 34BigThings, Redout has just launched on Steam.

Featuring support for virtual reality (VR) head-mounted displays (HMDs) Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and OSVR, Redout is an anti-gravity racer which includes both single-player and multiplayer modes.

Redout image 1

The single-player career mode has over 75 events to complete, with 20 tracks set around 4 locations on a post-apocalyptic Earth. There are even boss circuits included. Players will be able to create their own racing story, choosing between six teams, each requiring a different driving approach, with four racing classes to test those cornering skills in, each increasingly faster than the other.

As for multiplayer, racers will be able to match up with 12 players for a proper challenge, racing the tracks they’ve learnt in career mode and using them to full advantage to win races.

To help player compete in the higher stages Redout has an upgrade system so that when players gain experience and level up they’ll be able to add new features to their ships. To add to this over ten power ups are available to give racers the edge, such as additional turbo, shields, self-repair drone, advanced grip system, slipstream enhancers, and more. These power ups are also upgradeable for even more customisation options.

At the moment developer 34BigThings is currently offering a limited time discount for Redout. Until 9th September 2016 Steam users can get 10 percent off Redout, dropping the price down to £24.29 GBP from £26.99.

As more VR supporting titles are released on Steam, VRFocus will bring you the latest releases.
