Life in 360°: The Claw!

It’s time to go on a rampage! We’re following up Wednesday’s Life in 360° video where we took in some sweet dunks at a basketball competition in Venice Beach, California with something just a little bit spicier.

Life In 360° / 360 Degree VideoWe’re sticking with America, but this time we’re off to Virgin in Utah and some much rockier terrain than some Californian asphalt. Once again, we have a video from those crazy folks at Red Bull, and we’re going mountain biking to the extreme in The Red Bull Rampage.

If you’re not familiar with the Rampage, it’s an annual competition where bikers showcase great feats of strength and skill and depending upon your point of view utter bravery or total stupidity.  Freestyle, freeride, and downhill professional riders all show off their tricks and their skills to find out who is the best as they traverse the sort of rough course that makes you wonder how half them aren’t dead. ‘Rough terrain’ doesn’t even begin to cover things. Let me put it another way: I hope you’re not afraid of heights!

The 2017 Red Bull Rampage which is being shown here was the twelfth such event and brought with it the usual array of crazy moves, perilous drops and steep descents as riders battled to be crowned champion. Our video comes from the helmet cam of Darren Berrecloth (as well as a few other wisely placed cameras).  Berrecloth is known by his nickname of “The Claw” and he certainly made his mark in the competition with this run. You can check out the video below.

The red rocks of Virgin are expected to once again rumble to the sound of rapidly descending bikers later this year. Sometime between September at October. VRFocus will return to Life in 360° next week for three more examples of 360 degree video. We’ll see you at the usual times.

This Week in VR Sport: Formula E Driving Experience, PGA Tour Expands Coverage and 360 Video at Singapore F1 Grand Prix

It may be a busy week for videogame events, with the Tokyo Games Show (TGS) 2017 going on in Japan, the VRDC expo taking place in California and EGX 2017 being held in Birmingham, UK, but that doesn’t mean to say VRFocus’ weekly roundup of news relating to sport and virtual reality (VR) has gone wanting. This week features Red Bull and Virtually Live with a Formula E driving experience, 360-degree coverage being tested at the recent Singapore F1, and if you missed it, the PGA Tour and Intel will be expanding their immersive coverage of golf.

Virtually Live Launches Formula E VR Driving Experience at Red Bull Media World

If you’re heading to Red Bull Media World at the Verkehrshaus der Schweiz, Luzern, anytime soon then you’ll be able to check out a new VR experience by Virtually Live which place guests in the drivers seat of a Formula E race car.

The company has partnered with the FIA Formula E Championship to recreate races in VR using last Season’s Paris ePrix race track, allowing them to compete over 2 laps to beat Renault eDams driver Sébastien Buemi’s fastest time.

“We are delighted to collaborate with Red Bull Media World to provide visitors to the Verkehrshaus der Schweiz with a cutting edge VR driving experience, showcasing our relationship with Formula E,” said Oliver Weingarten, Director of Motorsport at Virtually Live in a statement. “Virtually Live has been recreating Formula E ePrixs live in immersive VR by ingesting the live telemetry from the drivers’ cars. This has enabled us to give fans a unique opportunity to compete in VR against Sébastien Buemi’s fastest lap at last Season’s Paris ePrix. We look forward to seeing who comes out on top early next year.”

“The level of detail and realism in the “Virtually Live Driving Experience” is incredible,” commented Sébastien Buemi. “This is a really innovative experience, which allows me to engage with my fans, at the same time as giving them the experience of driving my Formula E car in VR around the Paris ePrix track.“

The driving experience will be available until 31st January 2017. For those unable to attend download the Virtually Live Formula E VR App, and experience Season 3 ePrixs in VR with complete freedom of movement, where you can go anywhere on the track during the ePrixs; including the perspective from inside any driver’s car, but also have the chance to drive and set your own lap time.

Tata Communications Trials Live 360 Video at the Singapore F1 Grand Prix

Last weekend the 2017 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix took place with Tata Communications and Formula 1 trialling a live 360-degree video feed and TV broadcast in complete sync.

It’s quite common for there to be a 30-second delay between the 360-degree video and live TV feeds which in a fast paced sport like F1 can mean all the difference.

Tata placed two 360 cameras at the Marina Bay Street Circuit in Singapore, one trackside and one in the paddock. Via the Official F1 App fans could use their tablet to access a live 360º video feed from the paddock and see the biggest names in the sport. Or, during a race, as a driver pulls into the pits for a tyre change, fans could complement the action on TV with a 360º view of everything that is happening in the pit lane in real-time.

“We’ve done this test to show how a fan could watch Lewis, Sebastian or any other drivers coming into the pits on TV, grab their tablet and get a second, completely in sync 360º view of everything going on around him while he is there – not 30 seconds after he has driven off!,” said John Morrison, Chief Technical Officer, Formula 1. “In a sport like F1 where every millisecond matters, there are huge opportunities to empower fans to take control of key Grand Prix moments and create their unique, personalised race experiences through the powerful combination of live TV and 360º video.”

“This proof of concept shows the potential of live 360º video to augment the F1 TV viewing experience and bring VR mainstream in live sports and entertainment,” said Mehul Kapadia, Managing Director of Tata Communications’ F1 Business. “Eliminating the delay in 360º video means that, for the first time, it’s possible to offer fans truly live 360º video experiences on a global scale. This will enable sports and entertainment organisations to engage with their audiences in new ways and generate new revenue streams – helping the 360º video and VR market achieve its USD $60 billion potential.”

Life In 360°: Don’t Look Down

So to start of the new week as we all think about holidays, sun soaked beaches, and crystal clear blue waters, here’s Red Bull with its usual slice of extreme sports. This time it’s cliff diving, where some fearless sports people hurl themselves off a – not exactly cliff edge – Red Bull sponsored platform, which is attached to a cliff.

This is the Polignano A Mare stop of the 2017 Cliff Diving World Series, where the world’s best spin, twist, pike, twirl (or any of that other diving lingo) to show how awesome they are at landing in the water, without hurting themselves.

For those that are afraid of heights or water then this video might not be for you, for everyone else, dive right in.

For your regular dose of all things 360, Life In 360° will be back on VRFocus on Wednesday.

This Week in VR Sport: Boxing’s Destroyer Signed Up For HTC Vive VR Title, With More Sports Videogames On The Way

MLB.com.Another week has come and gone in what feels like the blink of an eye. Is it really time for us to once again go through everything related to the worlds of sport and virtual reality (VR) from the last seven or so days? Apparently so. So let’s get on with things…

Pac-Man (Not The Namco One) Set To Go Virtual

Those of you with particularly good memories will recall that world renowned Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao, widely regarded as one of the best boxers of all time and certainly one of the biggest names in the modern era of professional boxing is not totally unfamiliar with VR. Back in 2015 Pacquiao was one of a number of celebrities brought in to try out the then brand new Samsung Gear VR, with Pacquiao left apparently flabbergasted by his outer space trip.

Now it seems Pacquiao is set to become virtual himself thanks to a new deal agreed with South Korean developer Appnori Inc. Appnori was established by CEO Howard Lee, whose history includes a long stint as a GUI developer and mobile programmer for Samsung Mobile.

Appnori are perhaps best known for their ‘Kings’ series of VR videogames. Ping Pong Kings, Baseball Kings and now as revealed at a recent VIVE X Asia demo day the slightly awkwardly titled The Manny Pacquiao Boxing Kings VR.

It’s not actually clear if Pacquiao’s involvement in the game extends beyond licencing his name and possibly likeness as the game appears to be in a very early stage and no footage of it was shown. However Appnori did reveal plans that the game will include offline and online play with the goal of eventually inviting top ranking players to compete in a special (offline) tournament at which Pacquiao will adjudicate as a referee.

Prior to this agreement with Pacquiao, Appnori had also teamed up with Taiwanese baseball team Lamigo Monkeys. This also all follows Appnori’s tie-up with the International e-Sports Federation (IeSF), announced last month with little fanfare.

“The VR industry has already made several breakthroughs in terms of hardware. VR contents will grow explosively in the future, and it is time to adapt quickly to expand the scope of esports.” Said IeSF Secretary General Alex Lim. “In this regard, we are pleased to work with Appnori. VR and esports combined will create various synergies and will be the next combination for esports to expand. IeSF will make sure that esports is not only about creating business but also to look for creation of universal values for society, and to take care of the people involved in the industry as well.”

Sean Kwon, Appnori’s Head of International Business also confirmed in his Vive X presentation that they had five titles “in the pipeline” with graphics shown confirming that along with boxing, VR videogames based around football, badminton, archery and fencing are also being developed.  It was not confirmed if this would be a continuation of the Kings series or not but it is likely that they are.

Battlegrounds VR Makes It’s Debut

Battlegrounds VR  appeared twice in London over the last week. Firstly at POP Brixton last weekend where it made its world debut and then in Hyde Park this last Tuesday. Battlegrounds VR is a a brand new virtual reality (VR) gaming experience which has been developed by Major League Baseball (MLB) and gives baseball fans the chance to swing for the fences in a ‘Home Run Derby’ for either the Los Angeles Dodgers or Boston Red Sox.

The experience put you on the plate in either team’s stadium and utilizes both quadrophonic sound courtesy of audio electronics brand Altec Lansing and the HTC Vive head-mounted display (HMD). Most noticeable however is that it  takes place inside ten foot high steel cage – a sensible precaution when you’ve got someone who can’t see the real world around them swinging a bat around .

MLB.com ‘s Vice President of Games and VR Jamie Leece, commented: “Battlegrounds is an amazing opportunity to bring our European fans this unique combination of virtual interactive technology and the challenge, skills and fun atmosphere of Major League Baseball.”

Red Bull’s X-Fighters Get Let Loose In Madrid

Yesterday saw the latest round of Red Bull’s 2017 X-Fighters competition, held at Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas, a famous bull ring which has been a venue for the Red Bull X-Fighters contests now for 16 years. However, as VRFocus reported yesterday, in the hours leading up to the event the drinks company released a new 360 degree video featuring ‘novilleros’ (debuting stars) Fred Kyrillos and Christian Myer – in a Where’s Wally/Waldo style caper.

You can see the video below.

There’ll no doubt be even more sports news related to VR and it’s sister technologies in the next week. Be sure to check back throughout the weekend for everything else VR going on.

Join the Red Bull X-Fighters In A VR Adventure

A Red Bull F1 Car Comes To Digital Life Thanks To AT&T & Microsoft HoloLens At MWC

AT&T have been using the HoloLens to show off their ‘Connected Car’ services at Mobile World Congress (MWC). The short presentation covers the advantages of their connected car services by showing an Augmented Reality (AR) ‘hologram’ of a car moving through a city.

The AT&T connected car has features that allow other cars to communicate with each other to alert other cars in the area of hazards such as ice and re-route cars around accident sites. The presentation even covered how expanding this service to cover a while city could improve infrastructure.

HoloLens

AT&T also demonstrated another Augmented Reality experience involving a Red Bull Formula 1 car. Hovering above an actual Red Bull Formula 1 car was an exploded diagram of Red Bull car, the presentation highlighted certain areas as the presenter talked about each section. AT&T said during the presentation that they provide the infrastructure that allows real-time data to be transmitted from the F1 team at the track to engineers at their home base.

They also showed a birds-eye view of an F1 circuit, complete with tiny cars racing around, hovering above the physical F1 display car.

You can watch videos of both presentations, recorded by You Are Here below.

VRFocus will bring you further updates on the HoloLens and AR as it develops.
