Many people contend that Ready Player One by Ernest Cline is necessary reading for fans of VR, AR, or other forms of immersive technology. Regardless of how you feel about the book, Steven Spielberg’s big-budget take on the story of Wade Watts’ (played by Tye Sheridan) journey through The Oasis is poised to be a huge blockbuster when it releases in May of 2018.
Today, Entertainment Weekly has the exclusive first-look at Ready Player One. You can see the full image in all of its glory (jam-packed full of little references here and there, just like the book) embedded at the top of this article.
The film takes place in a futuristic dystopia where most of the world is rundown and nearly destroyed. People live in old campers and vans piled on top of each other in junkyards; they escape into the virtual world of The Oasis instead of connecting in the real world.
The headset in the image looks very similar to the ones we saw teased from when the movie was filming. Notably, he is also wearing gloves that resemble Manus VR gloves and is standing on a treadmill-like surface. You’ll also be able to see tons of 80s pop culture references spread around his living space if you look closely. The film is getting VR content that’s made by HTC, too.
