‘Sairento VR’ Mashes Up SUPERHOT & Raw Data for Something Even Cooler

Sairento VR is a new made-for-VR first person action game which manages to distil everything that was cool about SUPERHOT VR, Raw Data and adds its own locomotion system for something which promises to be even cooler than either of them.

Guns, swords and slow motion – three ingredients which have transfixed me as a movie-goer and gamer for as long as I can remember now. As such, throw some combination of the  above into a virtual reality experience and it’s pretty much guaranteed it’ll pique my interest. As motion controllers for consumer VR has now become a reality for both major VR platforms as 2016 comes to a close, we’ve already seen a handful of great games to exploit my weakness for these Matrix-inspired mechanics.

SUPERHOT VR debuted alongside the Oculus Touch launch with it’s brilliantly stark take on the genre and before that the excellent Raw Data on SteamVR provided a superbly slick package. Now comes Sairento VR, an in-development first person action title which shuffles all of the things that made these games so compelling and sprinkles some neat locomotion innovations into the mix for a package which looks to be pretty compelling.

sairento-vr-1Still in Early Access on Steam, the HTC Vive title (which, thanks to SteamVR also works on the Oculus and Touch) from developers Mixed Realms and is described as ” a mission-driven, VR action role-playing game set in a reimagined Japan in the near future.” So far so predictable then. Apparently you play a member of the ‘Silent Ones’ organisation, a covert operation who draw from samurai and ninja for their martial arts skills. Why? Who the hell cares?!

Frankly it’s all a flimsy excuse to throw you the player into a futuristic world filled with swords and firearms with a roster of bad-ass skills to boot. Those skills are upgrades as you progress too, which is where the RPG-lite elements of the game are felt.

All of that aside, it’s Mixed Realms’ twist on locomotion that may elevate the package to must-play status. Throughout the game, the player amasses ‘focus’ which is illustrated via blue bar toward the bottom of your view. This focus allows you to move throughout the gameworld via a fairly standard looking point-and-click method.

sairento-vr-3I can already hear the anti-VR-locomotion brigade readying their pitchforks so let me add this: the point-and-click mechanic actually adds to the coolness of this title. If you’ve amassed enough focus, you can string together leaps in slow motion, such that you descend on your enemies to obliterate with sword and pistol. But get this, you can augment your abilities to string those leaps together mid-air, double-jump style. This opens up opportunities for the player to choreograph some extremely cool combat together as they fend off waves of enemies. On top of this, you can unleash powered up projectiles via your sword and dispatching enemies is accompanied by a satisfying splash of over the top gore.

On the negative side, the title is at present little more than a glorified wave shooter with some neat progression grafted on, and there are some crashing and interface issues which need to be handled, but it’s a promising early showing for the developers and one I’ll be keeping a close eye on. We’ve only had a small amount of time with the title thus far so can’t gauge whether the £18.99 (currently discounted to £15.19) asking price is justified, but if the stuff I’ve described above holds any interest we suspect it’s worth a punt. We’ll be back with a more in-depth look at the title later.

Raw Data Developer Survios Raises $50 million in Funding This Year

Survios’ Raw Data has been one of the major virtual reality (VR) hits on Steam for HTC Vive since its launch during the summer. This week the Los-Angeles-based developer has announced that through two rounds of funding this year its secured $50 million USD, with the latest round including entertainment company Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM).

Back in 2014 Survios raised $4 million in an early round from a range of investment companies led by Shasta Ventures, helping support its first efforts in VR such as Zombies on the Holodeck! This helped Survios build towards Raw Data which it debuted during the Virtual Reality Los Angeles (VRLA) Winter Expo in January. The first financing round that was held this year featured Shasta Ventures again, alongside Danhua Capital, Shanda Holdings, Felicis Ventures, Dentsu Ventures and Lux Capital who led the round. The most recent investment round with MGM has meant that it’s chairman and CEO Gary Barber now joins Survios’ board.

Raw Data (3)

James Iliff, co-founder and chief creative officer at Survios spoke with GamesBeat about the investment, saying: “We want to build amazing VR content for the widest possible audience. We want to make the VR market succeed. It’s still early, and we want to make it happen.”

“MGM has incredible creative properties and access to a lot of intellectual property that could help us,” he added.

While the investment means Survios is looking to the future and diversifying its content lineup, how about Raw Data? Iliff addresses any concerns fans may have in a blog posting: “We are going to complete Raw Data as we originally set out to do, delivering more missions, heroes, items, and abilities; further polishing the gameplay; and adding in lots of story-driven elements so that the finished product is not only super fun to play, but also has the depth and fullness you crave. We also have a few unannounced surprises in store for you along the way.”

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Survios and Raw Data, reporting back with any further updates.

Survios Acquires $50 Million In Funding, Begins Building Publishing Program

Survios Acquires $50 Million In Funding, Begins Building Publishing Program

Nathan Burba, CEO of Survios, is quoted on the company’s About page as saying that the Survios team sees “gaming as an art form. And we don’t just want to make games more immersive — we want to make them more human”. Immersion is the buzzword of buzzwords in the VR industry, reflecting the unique promise of virtual experiences like no other word can. However, seeking to make games “more human” takes it to another level.

For such an ambitious ideal, a company needs a great deal of funding behind them as they create and experiment on their way to that goal. Luckily, Survios has that. The company announced that their B and C rounds of funding have supplied them with $50 million of capital. The latter was led by a major media company: MGM. I spoke with Survios CEO Nathan Burba to get a bit more information on these new developments.

Survios as a company was birthed when Project Holodeck was created in 2012, a story we dug deeper into in a previous hands-on with their game Raw Data; they continue to research and develop new ideas in the VR industry. Raw Data is one of the few VR games we’ve confirmed have earned over $1 million in sales.

MGM, once one of the largest film studios in the world, is certainly a significant name to have in your corner for funding so it’s no surprise they pulled in such an amount. MGM CEO Gary Barber will also be joining the Survios board, so this is just the beginning of a potentially very fruitful relationship.

With $50 million on the table, Survios is expanding development of the projects they’re working on including their cross-platform compatibility and also bringing in more talent. A more significant endeavor is also in the works that could ripple out further into the VR industry as a whole.

“We are starting to build a publishing program where we not only want to help expand our industry by developing content ourselves,” Burba explains, “we want to have the potential to work with outside content partners as well.”

When discussing funding, I asked Burba the meaning behind his quote about making “more human” games.

“What that means is we like to develop something that has a lot of the different hallmarks of real life whether it’s more complex simulation systems or better production value or multiplayer,” he said. “Only through this kind of full body experience that’s fully interactive and immersive do you get something that feels more human and isn’t just a gimmick. We really like to create the highest quality content…Active VR as we like to call it.”

Many interesting things will likely come from this funding and, hopefully, Survios will be able to break ground and deliver “more human” gaming experiences.

‘Raw Data’ Developer Survios Raises $50 Million, Now Top Funded VR Dev Studio

Survios, the VR development studio behind the Vive title Raw Data, has announced a whopping $50 million in funding to further expand its VR content offerings. The new round makes the company the most funded pure VR development studio to date.

Survios’ announcement today is actually an announcement of two individual funding rounds together totalling $50 million. Back in 2014, the company had raised a $4.2 million Series A investment, with a reported Series B investment in October of 2015, though the round size and other details were never disclosed. Today’s announcement appears to lump together that older Series B investment and a newer Series C investment; the company hasn’t broken down the sizes of each round, but has announced that together they total an impressive $50 million. Now with some $54 million in raised capital, Survios is the top funded pure VR development studio to date.

The former round (which we presume was the company’s Series B), was led by Lux Capital with participation from Shasta Ventures, Danhua Capital, Shanda Holdings, Felicis Ventures and Dentsu Ventures, according to Survios. The more recent Series C was led by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM); as part of the investment, MGM’s Chairman and CEO Gary Barber joins Survios’ board of directors.

The interesting investment by MGM, whom most will recognize for their movie production and publishing work—including major films like The Hobbit trilogy—is described as “strategic” and aims to make use of MGM’s iconic IP.

With the sizable investment, Survios says they’ll also pick up a publishing role, planning to “add third party titles to its slate and to expand distribution into international venues.” The new funding puts the company “in a position to achieve our goal of becoming the leading publisher and content creator in virtual reality,” says Nathan Burba, CEO of Survios.

In addition to publishing, Survios plans to extend their VR content offerings to “entertainment centers around the world,” with a likely first target being China where high end VR is thriving in the out-of-home ‘arcade’ setting.

Survios’ first (and so far only) VR title Raw Data [our review] made its debut as an Early Access release in July. According to the company, the game earned $1 million in revenue in its first month, a substantial figure for the burgeoning VR game market.

bishop-charge-shot-raw-data-ealy-accessThe company’s announcement says the funding will also be used to “expand” the Raw Data universe, “including support for cross-platform play,” which sounds as if the Survios plans to bring Raw Data to platforms other than the Vive. We’ve reached out for clarification.

Survios Comments on State of VR Market: “we are not at a point yet where it can sustain AAA development but we will get there”

We are at the point in the evolution of the virtual reality (VR) market where those who are part of it are constantly looking around and evaluating the state of it, and how it is to gain more momentum. The head of Survios, creators of Raw Data, gave his two cents, and it is something both hopeful and critical.

In an interview posted on Games Industry, Chris Hewish talks about how fortunate Survios has been in having funding for its VR developments, but it doesn’t always mean it will amount to AAA quality games: “We’re very fortunate that we have great backers, that we’re funded well enough to take a longer view. Our goal, if you’re looking at the existing console business or PC business or mobile business, those are all mature businesses where the objective for any developer or studio is revenue because you can have a fairly predictable outcome. If you put X amount of funding in and you can have a certain quality bar, you’re going to recoup your costs. It becomes much more important about being on time, on budget – it’s much more of a mature business model. With VR my point of view is it’s a new market and we are not at a point yet where it can sustain AAA development but we will get there.”

Raw Data (3)

Right now, as Hewish points, out there are plenty of titles that don’t necessarily fulfill what was originally envisioned for VR: “I’m not bagging on anybody, I don’t have a specific developer in mind, and this is just an example since I don’t know if anyone’s done this, but why would I want to play chess in VR? I can do that in real life. I want to be heroic, with bad ass abilities and go into environments I could never see in real life and be extremely active in those environments. To me that’s the holy grail of VR, that’s what it offers. Getting that into consumers’ hands is the win for the medium.”

If studios do get the funding, then they should be concentrating on the future as well, and how they will sustain: “I would say any studio that does that should be planning, how do they survive after that? Where are they going to get funding next? Or have they put enough aside out of that investment to sustain into the next game when they aren’t getting funded for exclusives? Conversely, they could look to studios that are not doing platform exclusives,”

“With an Oculus or someone it might be more a straight work for hire model, fully funding an exclusive title, whereas for us it would be more a publisher model we’re looking at so there would be an ongoing revenue stream for the developer to help them grow.”

Raw Data Free to Play This Weekend

Survios’ first-person shooter Raw Data has proved to be incredibly since its launch a few months ago, with Steam giving it a ‘very positive’ rating from user reviews. So this week for HTC Vive owners who haven’t yet tried the title the developer is having a free gameplay weekend.

For those that haven’t heard of Raw Data, the Steam Early Access title involves players fighting off waves of deadly robots wielding an arsenal of ranged and melee weapons. These include pump-action shotguns, explosive arrows, grenades, katana’s, or just use your fists in close-quarters combat, there’s also the option to duel-wield weapons for maximum damage. Raw Data features single-player, LAN co-op and online co-op.

Raw Data (1)

Earlier this week Survios released its biggest update yet for Raw Data adding a third character to the title. Boss: The Street Merc joins launch heros Bishop and Saija as the newest SyndiK8 operative, bringing with him the Dominator Shotgun, giving players some heavy duty two-handed firepower. The update also included two new missions, Thundershock and Extermination, a new enemy type – a teleporting ninja robot – as well as a new defence item, a shield station.

Raw Data is available now through to 16th October 1pm PST/8pm GMT for free, and for those that want to continue playing there’s a 25 percent discount available, dropping the price down from £29.99 GBP to £22.49. The discount offer runs until 17th October.

Big Raw Data Update Includes New Missions, Weapons and Abilities

Since its launch in July Survios’ Raw Data on HTC Vive has proved to be a commercial success with the developer claiming last month that it had hit $1 million USD sales. Survios hasn’t been putting its feet up either releasing several updates to expand and improve the title. Today the latest update goes live and with it more new additions than ever before.

The update includes a brand new hero character, “Boss: The Street Merc”, who will join Bishop and Saija as the newest SyndiK8 operative and playable hero. He has a powerful signature weapon, the Dominator Shotgun, which gives players a two-handed, pump-action firearm.

Raw Data StandingPoses_Boss.2

Other features include two new missions, Thundershock and Extermination, a new enemy type – a teleporting ninja robot – as well as a new defence item, a shield station.

“One of the reasons why ‘Raw Data’ has been successful is because it has shown the capabilities of ‘Active VR’ and how a experience can be both intuitively casual yet thematically hardcore at the same time,” said Survios co-founder and CCO James Iliff. “This new update will continue to propel players further into this enticing world we’ve created, with tons of new immersive features that enable you to be the badass hero you’ve always wanted to be.”

“Virtual Reality is on the fast track to becoming the hottest new content medium,” said Survios co-founder and CEO Nathan Burba. “As limited compelling content has proved to be one of the key obstacles in breaking through to the mainstream, Survios is committed to developing a playbook for engaging VR content that will sway a mass audience in the same way Oculus did for VR hardware.”

Raw Data is available through Steam Early Access for £29.99 GBP. A detailed update list can be found below, and for all the latest Raw Data news, keep reading VRFocus.

Key additions to the update will include:

  • New Mission – Thundershock
    • As an immersive electrical storm surges over the Skyport, act fast to stay alive while disposing of lightning-charged enemies.

  • This is the newest phase on the Skyport map, featuring heavy rain and visually stunning lightning. Lightning strikes will hurt the player and disable defences (necessitating repair by the player), but will buff up adversaries.

  • New Mission – Extermination
    • The Robotics Lab’s advanced–and dangerous — security system will put your dexterity to the test as players strategic abilities must come into play.

  • Duck, dodge, twist and teleshift around laser patterns while trying to stay alive to avoid the deadly grids.

  • New Hero – Boss The Street Merc
    • A disciple of the hard streets of Neo-Shinjuku, Boss will blast robots to bits with his trusty shotgun, or bash the situation to a pulp with an iron fist.

  • New Weapon – Dominator Shotgun
    • Proximity Reload
      • Automatically reload your shotgun just by touching to your back, getting you back in the fray even faster.
    • Nade Launcher
      • Pull the alternate trigger to launch up to three plasma grenades, completely obliterating enemies in your path.
    • Air Juggle
      • Hold back the pump to charge a flak blast, then push forward and fire to pop enemies up in the air for extra punishment
    • New Special Abilities – Air Juggle, Grenade Launcher and more
      • Boss can charge up his shotgun and pop a group of enemies into the air, which then allows himself or other heroes to “juggle” them by shooting or damaging them.
    • Defence Update – Plasma Turret (New Model)
      • New art for the deployable Plasma Turret distinguishes it from other defences.
    • New Defence – Shield Station
      • Feeling a bit exposed? Deploy the dome shaped holographic Shield Station for instant cover when the you-know-what hits the fan.
      • The Shield Station is the first non-turret deployable defence: a static barricade that provides cover behind which players can crouch.
    • New Enemy Type – Teleporting Ninja Bot
      • Now that Eden’s infamous stealthing robot has received the Teleshift hardware upgrade, you’ll have to move faster than ever to take it down.
      • This updated version of the stealthing enemy robot features the innovative Teleshifting mechanic available to players, making it extremely fast and difficult to hit.
    • MP Leaderboards
      • Co-op teams can now compete for the top spot on each level.
