GDC 2017: Raw Data Studio Announces Sprint Vector – Blazing Fast VR

GDC 2017: Raw Data Studio Announces Sprint Vector – Blazing Fast VR

At GDC 2017, virtual reality gaming studio Survios is announcing Sprint Vector — a brand new experience focusing on one thing above all else: speed.

Survios is one of the very few VR studios that we can say definitively have been successful. Since the launch of the HTC Vive headset last year, the team has announced sales exceeding $1 million and a $50 million round of venture capital funding. At the core of this success is Raw Data — a highly polished VR title that rose to prominence through an emphasis on fun, fast, weapons-based gameplay. In the earliest days of VR people really wanted to shoot things and slice things and Survios was all too happy to feed that hunger.

Earlier this week, Survios announced that Raw Data would be coming to the Oculus Rift and now they’re following that news up with an entirely new experience: Sprint Vector. We had the chance to speak with the studio about this new title and what makes it unique.

“Sprint Vector is completely different from Raw Data,” a Survios representative told us over the phone. “We kept hearing that natural locomotion is impossible in VR. It makes people too nauseous. So instead of giving in to that we decided to prove them wrong. In this game players are not just walking or strolling, they are running jumping flying on the ground through the air using our fluid locomotion.”

This fluid locomotion system is the key mechanic for Sprint Vector. By putting your arms in front of you and pulling the world, you can achieve blazing fast speeds. We’ve seen locomotion methods like this before, but Survios is combining it with a momentum system that really ramps up the speed.

In Sprint Vector you can race your friends or NPCs around other worldy tracks or up the sides of buildings at speeds as high as 300 miles per hour. According to Survios, players are reporting no motion sickness in their tests even at these high speeds.

Details are still sparse concerning a release date, price or final platform for Sprint Vector. As of now the game only exists as an early prototype for the HTC Vive. We’ll bring you more Sprint Vector news as it develops.

Raw Data Developer Survios Announce New Title At GDC

Los Angeles-based videogame developer Survios unveiled at GDC today that they are working on a new game called Sprint Vector, which will be available for demonstration at their booth at GDC.

Sprint Vector
is essentially an athletics competition, though on an extreme scale. Players can expect to find themselves racing head-to-head across deadly inter-dimensional courses, climbing up sky-scraper-high walls, racing downhill at 300 miles per hour or diving head first off a 1000-foot tower.

Survios say they have introduced a brand new fluid movement system that allows realistic motion while minimising the illness problems often caused by motion within virtual reality (VR) games.

“Survios is always creating unique solutions to tackle VR’s biggest challenges,” explained James Iliff, Survios’ Chief Creative Officer and co-founder. “With Sprint Vector, we’ve taken one of the biggest challenges in VR right now – realistic motion – and created a smooth, intelligent locomotion system that not only feels comfortable, but can also read the player’s intentions.”

Survios just recently announced they would be expanding Raw Data to the Oculus Rift. They will be demonstrating both Sprint Vector and Raw Data at GDC in the South Hall at Booth No.944

For further information coming out of GDC, VRFocus will be there.

‘Raw Data’ is Coming to Oculus Home with Reworked Touch Support & Cross-Platform Play

Survios, the developers behind the impressive first person VR action title Raw Data, has announced that the game is coming to Oculus Rift with fully “re-engineered” Touch motion control support and the ability to play online with your HTC Vive owning friends.

One of the most accomplished early titles for the Steam VR platform and the HTC Vive, the guns ‘n swords gameplay of Raw Data also made it was of VR’s first major commercial successes. According to the developers, the title was the first VR title to exceed $1M in sales, a feat achieved in less than a month.

Now the title is coming to the Oculus Rift with Touch controllers support, and Survios are taking the opportunity to add the ability for Steam VR and Oculus Home users to play together with cross compatibility support.

Raw_Data_Cover_Art_(1)“We’re thrilled to welcome the Oculus player community to Raw Data,” said James Iliff, Survios Chief Creative Officer and co-founder. “With VR still a young, niche industry, it’s crucial right now for the entire community to be united regardless of platform. We believe VR is ultimately going to be a platform-agnostic medium, and we’re showing our support for that shift with Raw Data’s new, cross-platform compatibility—and that’s just the beginning. We’re going to do everything we can to create content for the entire VR community.”

Alongside the Rift support, Survios also teased some of the new content players can expect to get stuck into soon. The next content update will feature player character rebalancing in responbse to player feedback, with Saija and Boss both receiving “powerful new abilities” and “extensive reworks”, as well as a new mission called “Cataclysm” – which has “descend to new depths of terror as they fend off deadly enemies while traveling on a moving elevator platform”.

No precise work on Raw Data’s release for Oculus Home as yet or when that promised content update will arrive, but Survios are on hand at GDC to show it off to show goers.

Raw Data Adding Oculus Rift and Touch to List of Supported Platforms

Los Angeles-based developer Survios today announced that their flagship title Raw Data will be heading to the Oculus platform. This will allow users of the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift and Touch to play Raw Data together for the first time.

Raw Data was the first virtual reality (VR) title to top the Steam Sales Charts and break the $1 million USD mark in the space of a month. Survios have optimised and re-engineered the game to work with the tracking and controls of the Oculus Touch for a complete experience.

James Iliff, Survios Chief Creative Officer and co-founder, had this to say; “We’re thrilled to welcome the Oculus player community to Raw Data. With VR still a young, niche industry, it’s crucial right now for the entire community to be united regardless of platform. We believe VR is ultimately going to be a platform-agnostic medium, and we’re showing our support for that shift with Raw Data’s new, cross-platform compatibility—and that’s just the beginning. We’re going to do everything we can to create content for the entire VR community.

Survios have also announced that alongside the Oculus compatibility, there will also be a significant amount of new content in it’s forthcoming update. Two of the hero characters, Saija and Boss, will receive substantial overhauls, which is largely a result of user feedback with regards to game balance. There will also be a now mission called ‘Cataclysm’ which Survios describe as being “very challenging”.

Survios will be demonstrating co-operative cross-platform gameplay from their latest build at their GDC booth, South Hall Booth 944.

VRFocus will provide further information on Raw Data and Survios when we have it.

Oculus Touch Owners Will Soon Get Their Hands on Raw Data

One of the most high profile and successful virtual reality (VR) titles on HTC Vive, Raw Data will be coming to Oculus Rift. Developer Survios teased a couple of images this week via its Twitter account showing the headset and Oculus Touch controllers.

The first-person shooter which has players fighting waves of enemy robots doesn’t yet have a release date for Oculus Rift, with the studio simply stating: “It’s happening–soon(tm).”

Raw Data - Oculus Touch

With the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2017 next week it’s likely Survios will be releasing further details, possibly even giving playable demos to attendees, as the imagery already shows a working version.

In September last year Survios announced it had hit $1 million USD in sales in just over a month, adding that at least 20 percent of HTC Vive owners had bought the videogame. Since that launch the team has added a raft of new content, with more missions, weapons, characters and abilities to broaden the titles appeal.

Then in January it revealed plans for a Raw Data Arcade initiative, designed specifically for VR entertainment venues around the world. This will see a stripped down version of the experience being created, featuring simpler in-game menus, improved loading times and faster multiplayer matchmaking.

VRFocus will be at GDC 2017, so check back next week for further updates on Raw Data.

Raw Data Is Finally On Its Way To Oculus Rift And Touch

Raw Data Is Finally On Its Way To Oculus Rift And Touch

Seven months after its initial Steam debut and Survios’ Raw Data remains one of our favorite co-op action games on the HTC Vive, even while its still in Early Access. And pretty soon, it will be on the Oculus Rift too with official Oculus Home and Touch integration.

Raw Data is one of the few high-profile Vive games that didn’t head straight over to Oculus Home when Touch launched back at the start of December 2016. With over $1 million in revenue so far, it’s been a breakout success and has helped solidify Survios as one of the premier VR development studios in the industry. Today, the company teased the future of their flagship game showing what we can only assume is a developer playing Raw Data on the Oculus Rift using Touch controllers:

In Raw Data, you take control of an agent with extraordinary abilities as you fight off impending hordes of robotic enemies. You can freely move around environments with a sprint-based teleportation mechanic, set up turrets, and employ a wide variety of abilities to wage war. Some heroes get electric blades to use like lightsabers, while others shoot guns and perform antics that feel inspired by The Matrix.

What really puts it over the top, though, is the cooperative multiplayer. Standing back-to-back with a friend, shouting out how to escape the massive hulking robots around you, is a rush unlike most things available in VR right now.

We’ve reached out to Survios for comment and elaboration on how this support will be integrated, if it will require a 360-setup, and any other changes that have been made to port it over to the Oculus platform. Have you tried playing Raw Data on Steam with your Oculus Rift and unofficial Touch support yet? Let us know what you think of the news in the comments below!

Raw Data Developer Survios to Launch VR Arcade Initiative

This week Los Angeles-based developer Survios, the studio behind first-person shooter (FPS) Raw Data for HTC Vive, has announced the launch of an arcade-optimized version of the title, specifically for VR entertainment venues around the world.

The new version of Raw Data will give players a uniquely streamlined experience. Raw Data Arcade will feature simpler in-game menus, improved loading times, faster multiplayer matchmaking, and admin tools for arcade operators.

There will be multiple game modes, including match-based hero progression and fully unlocked quickplay, as well as customizable gameplay timers to make Raw Data Arcade adaptable to both short and long arcade play sessions.

“The resurgence of arcades is a welcome development in the virtual reality arena,” said Survios VP of Business Development, Ben Kim. “VR arcades provide an easy entry point for consumers curious about premium VR technology. We are thrilled to announce Raw Data Arcade as we continue our mission to build a worldwide arcade distribution network for Survios and other developers.”

“Survios is the most sophisticated publisher with respect to arcade operators’ needs,” added McKay Christensen, co-founder and CEO of VR Junkies, a network of arcades with multiple locations in North America. “Raw Data is a fantastic title, and to have that game combined with their marketing support and customer service has been immensely valuable to us.”

Currently Survios has beta-tested the arcade in nearly 30 countries, and as Survios’ roster of games grow, they’ll be added to the arcades libraries alongside offering distribution support to VR developers who want to enter the arcade market through its publishing initiative.

VR arcades are continuing to grow and multiply, with HTC Vive being used in a large majority of them. From Viveport Arcade and Adores Inc. in Tokyo, to VR Here in the UK and Scene75 Entertainment Center in the US, these new immersive centres may just become commonplace in the near future.

Survios To Release VR Arcade Version of ‘Raw Data’ Following Game’s Sales Success

Survios To Release VR Arcade Version of ‘Raw Data’ Following Game’s Sales Success

Survios is one of early virtual reality’s most impressive success stories. The young studio has created one of the best-selling VR experiences available today, in Raw Data. This experience is available only through Steam for the HTC Vive (with unofficial Oculus Rift with Touch support) and it has eclipsed the elusive $1 million benchmark in sales. Now, on the heels of this success, Survios is announcing that its game will soon be playable in VR arcades around the world.

According to an official release from the company, “Survios Inc. today announced the launch of an arcade-optimized version of their best-selling, critically-acclaimed game, Raw Data, in virtual reality arcade entertainment venues across the globe with localized marketing and customer support.”

This Arcade Version of Raw Data will give gamers the same fast paced, high-octane experience they’ve come to know and love on their personal systems. However, the port will be an “exclusive version of Raw Data, created specifically for arcades” and this iteration will offer a “uniquely streamlined experience” featuring “simplified in-game menus, improved loading times, faster multiplayer matchmaking, and robust admin tools for arcade operators.”

Additionally, in the new arcade version:

“Players will have access to multiple game modes—including match-based hero progression and fully unlocked quickplay—ensuring an engaging experience for casual and hardcore gamers alike. Additionally, customizable gameplay timers make Raw Data Arcade easily adaptable to both short and long arcade play sessions. Beyond the actual game, arcade operators will also receive marketing support from Survios to promote their business and drive in-store traffic.”

This initiative has apparently been in the works for a while now, with Survios reporting that it has been quietly beta testing this port in more than 30 VR arcades. “Survios is the most sophisticated publisher with respect to arcade operators’ needs,” said McKay Christensen, co-founder and CEO of VR Junkies, a network of arcades with multiple locations in North America. “Raw Data is a fantastic title, and to have that game combined with their marketing support and customer service has been immensely valuable to us.”

This news comes less than a month after Survios revealed it had closed two rounds of fundraising adding up to $50 million. Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer (MGM) led one strategic financing round and MGM chairman and CEO Gary Barber joined the Survios’ board. In addition, a prior financing round was led by Lux Capital with participation from Shasta Ventures, Danhua Capital, Shanda Holdings, Felicis Ventures, and Dentsu Ventures.
