It Looks Like The Void is Returning Reports Suggest

The VOID image1

In its heyday, The Void was a premium virtual reality (VR) location offering pioneering experiences affiliated with big IPs like Star Wars and Marvel’s Avengers. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic and other issues, the location-based entertainment (LBE) closed last year. Now it looks like there’s a ray of hope regarding a comeback, thanks to new investment reports and a job page appearing.

THE VOID - Star Wars

Protocol reports this week that a former investor in The Void has now acquired all the key assets of the company with plans to relaunch in 2022. The patents and trademarks have been picked up by Hyper Reality Partners, helmed by CEO Adrian Steckel, who was also one of The Void’s board members. He’s not the only one returning with former Chief Creative Officer Curtis Hickman and former VP of Content Jason Howard heading up the new team.

Steckel is currently fundraising to help support the relaunch with $20 million USD supposedly already raised. While the company is staying fairly quiet regarding its plans, a basic placeholder page has appeared listing three engineer positions. “Hyper Reality Partners is a team made up of world-renowned industry leaders in location-based virtual reality. Having acquired The VOID assets and IP, our mission is to take VR well beyond where it has been before,” the page notes. “HRP & The VOID are now entering a period of rapid expansion and are looking for more talented team members to join us. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of VR and the entire entertainment industry.”

This would be a major turnaround for The Void, much like Sandbox VR also managed to achieve in early 2021. Hyper Reality Partners will also be trying to avoid the mistakes of the past, as it wasn’t purely the Covid-19 pandemic that shuttered The Void’s operations.

The VOID

A lot of The Void’s attraction was down to its Hollywood blockbuster franchises, with titles such as Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire, Ralph Breaks VR, Jumanji: Reverse the Curse and Avengers: Damage Control. The Void had developed its own in-house technology, utilising a modified Oculus headset in combination with a VR backpack, haptic vest and environmental effects like wind and heat to aid immersion.

However, its 17 facilities around the world were all in pricey locations, premium shopping centres or The Venetian casino in Las Vegas. Pre-pandemic these were becoming difficult to afford and the lack of revenue once they were forced the closure with its IP eventually being sold off to HRP. Because of this, Protocol also notes that HRP is now looking at opening larger standalone entertainment venues instead of shopping centre locations, with the first one planned for Vegas.

As further details arise, VRFocus will let you know.

The VOID’s New San Francisco Location Is Now Open

Today the newest branch of The Void, an immersive location-based VR experience center, opened in San Francisco, CA.

This newest location for The Void debuts with two of the company’s most popular attractions in the form of Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire and Ralph Breaks VR. Secrets of the Empire is featured outside of both Disneyland and Disney World and was created in partnership by Lucasfilm and ILMxLAB as an official part of Star Wars lore. We tried it and really enjoyed it.

Ralph Breaks VR uses a very similar physical space layout but takes place in the Wreck-it-Ralph universe and is a great option of families with younger children. We liked it too for what it was.

There is no word yet on if this location will also get Ghostbusters or Nicodemus, but some of the new, upcoming experiences yet to be revealed for this year and next are likely safe bets. We’re expecting to likely see more Marvel and Disney experiences for sure based on past announcements.

In related news, we’ve been big fans of the work Nomadic is doing as well and they’re expanding to multiple new locations too. Their Arizona Sunshine zombie experience was very impressive with lots of physical object interaction.

The Void’s San Francisco location is on the 4th floor of the Westfield Mall, just off the escalator, at 865 Market St. They’re open every day from 10AM – 9PM and you can buy tickets for either Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire or Ralph Breaks VR, the two experiences on offer at this location, on the official website.

Hands-on: Cartoon Magic With Ralph Breaks VR

Videogame tie-ins with movies have always been a dicey proposition, sometimes succeeding whilst a lot fail terribly. Location-based entertainment (LBE) company The VOID has seemingly attacked this problem head on by offering virtual reality (VR) experiences that aim to truly immerse players in their content. Having previously released Ghostbusters: Dimensions and then Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire, the company has collaborated once again with ILMxLAB as well as Walt Disney Animation Studios for Ralph Breaks VR, complimenting movie Ralph Breaks the Internet.

Ralph Breaks VR

Released towards the end of 2018, The VOID invited the VRFocus team to experience Ralph Breaks VR whilst at CES 2019 last week – making for a welcome break from the conference chaos. Another four-player adventure – there was only three of us so four isn’t essential – Ralph Breaks VR is a much more light-hearted affair when compared to Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire, offering rich cartoon aesthetics, with bold colours that really help to transport you into Wreck-It Ralph’s world.

If you’ve ever been to any of The VOID’s experiences before then you’ll know the setup, for those that haven’t The VOID has a nice streamlined system from start to finish. It always starts with a video introduction – this time with Wreck-It Ralph and Vanellope von Schweetz – detailing the story and what you’ll need to do. After that it’s time to suit up, donning PC backpacks and connected headsets. The experience does cater for most people and sizes, so if you’re slightly larger (like me) then there are additional straps to keep the whole backpack PC in place.

Ralph Breaks VR is much more hands-on than Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire, with an opening couple of puzzles properly using the environment. In one puzzle two walls suddenly light up with green ticks and red crosses, the task begins to place your hands on as many green symbols as possible. The task works great as a warm-up whilst helping new players understand that they can interact with the environment.

Next up was a classic game of Space Invaders, with the group split in two, we were tasked with shooting the wall of aliens from either side. Once again this was about using the environment rather than a gun peripheral, with a console providing arrow keys and a fire button to aim and shoot a cannon. This is where you could employ some teamwork with each player controlling different aspects of the cannon.

What really made Ralph Breaks VR standout, and thusly competitive was the scoring – located on a digital watch. Once the VRFocus team had found this feature everything changed because someone would get the bragging rights of being declared the winner. Going from what we thought was a team experience to a winner takes all scoring challenge suddenly upped the excitement even further, perfect for the next stage.

And this was where the guns came in (sort of). Not the normal bullet holding kind, instead these were food throwers, more precisely pancake and ice-cream launchers. Heading inside the Pancake Milkshake Diner it was time to shoot some kitties and bunnies, trying to max out the score with a well-aimed shot. This became even trickier in the next area with flying cars dropping coins to shoot, as well as drones and a few other items.

All the set, interactive pieces were fast and energetic, ideal for younger VR players – The VOID does have a minimum height of 48 inches (1.20 m) tall and visitors must be at least 10 years old – but to be honest Ralph Breaks VR is great fun whatever the age. In fact, VRFocus enjoyed it that much we’d recommend it over Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire. As always though, the time just flies by and it’s over before you know it. If you’re a VR fan that’s not tried any LBE content yet, now that The VOID has built a better roster of original content it’s certainly worth checking out.

Trash the Internet in The VOID’s Upcoming Adventure Ralph Breaks VR

After the success of Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire, The VOID and ILMxLAB are back again with another virtual reality (VR) movie collaboration, Ralph Breaks VR. Created in collaboration with Walt Disney Animation Studios, the new hyper-reality experience is based around upcoming film Ralph Breaks the Internet, with pre-sale tickets now available ahead of next weeks rollout.

Ralph Breaks VR

Just like the Star Wars experience, Ralph Breaks VR is a four-player adventure, with guests joining Wreck-It Ralph and Vanellope von Schweetz disguised as characters from the film called Netizens to play the newest, coolest videogame.

“Shoot retro alien spaceships, squash pixel bugs, and fend off hordes of bunnies and kitties in the Pancake Milkshake Diner while you team up with Ralph and Vanellope in a race against time to see who can rack up the highest score! It’s all fun and games until an evil security system shows up and threatens to take you and your new buddies offline…permanently,” The VOID’s synopsis explains

Ralph Breaks VR introduces two brand new locations, Dunderdome and Pancake Milkshake Diner, and a new antagonist, B.E.V. voiced by Pamela Ribon, which stands for “Built to Eradicate Viruses.”

“It’s incredible to work on an experience like Ralph Breaks VR that lets you live inside a film you’ve spent years creating,” said Ribon, Co-Writer for Ralph Breaks the Internet and Writer for Ralph Breaks VR. “ILMxLAB and The VOID have built a world where Ralph and Vanellope really come alive around you.”

“Designing the elements that pull you irresistibly into the unique world of Ralph and Vanellope has been an incredibly fun process,” said Curtis Hickman, Chief Creative Officer and Co-Founder of The VOID. “What we’ve created together with ILMxLAB is an astounding adventure that allows people to experience a unique extension of Wreck-It Ralph’s detailed characters, environments and stories. With this new experience we are able to truly showcase the capabilities of The VOID, allowing guests to once more step beyond reality.”

Ralph Breaks VR will launch next Wednesday, 21st November at four locations in the US. These are the Downtown Disney District in Anaheim, CA; the Glendale Galleria, Glendale, CA, the Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian, Las Vegas, NV; and Disney Springs in Orlando, FL. For further details and ticket info head to the official website. As always, keep reading VRFocus for the latest updates.

Ralph Breaks VR: VR-Erfahrung zu “Wreck-It Ralph” ab November in The Void

Ralph Breaks VR – Neue VR-Erfahrung zu Wreck-It Ralph startet in VR-Arcades von The Void

Ralph-Breaks-VR-The-Void

The VOID is Developing 5 New Disney & Marvel VR Experiences, ‘Ralph Breaks VR’ Coming in Fall

The VOID, an out-of-home VR destination that melds wireless VR with real warehouse-scale environments, has partnered with Lucasfilm’s ILMxLAB to bring five new Disney and Marvel experiences to their growing number of VR facilities.

According to a Fast Company report, the first experience will be based on the upcoming Disney sequel to Wreck-it Ralph (2012), dubbed Ralph Breaks The Internet. The experience is said to debut sometime in fall 2018, and is ostensibly named ‘Ralph Breaks VR’.

The VOID’s second experience is still somewhat cryptic at this point, as it’s based on what Fast Company reports to be “an undisclosed Marvel movie that will premiere sometime in 2019.”

Marvel’s upcoming glut of films slated for 2019 include Captain Marvel, Spider-Man: Far from Home, and a still untitled Avengers film. Disney is also releasing Frozen 2 this November. The VOID currently features Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire, Ghostbusters Dimensions, and a horror-adventure developed by Ninja Theory dubbed Nicodemus: Demon of Evanishment.

The other three Disney/Marvel experiences are still unannounced at this time.

“Very fundamentally we ask ourselves what are places people have always wanted to step into and be a part of, but were never possible before,” says The VOID’s founder and chief creative officer Curtis Hickman. “Disney and Marvel have a lot of worlds that people want to step into that work well with our technology.”

The VOID hosts virtual reality experiences built around physical environments, letting you interact with objects projected both in the game and present in the physical world. Using specialized equipment like customized VR headsets, VR backpack PC’s, and commercial tracking technology, The VOID calls the VR experiences they deliver, “hyper-reality,” to signify that it goes above and beyond the sort of room-scale VR experience you can have at home with high-end consumer equipment. To boot, the company’s facilities can accommodate up to four users at a time, making for an ideal group outing.

Since it opened its first Utah-based test facility in 2015, the company has expanded its bespoke VR experiences to eight locations spread across North America and the United Arab Emirates. More openings are coming soon however, which include Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, Hollywood, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and Santa Monica, bringing the total to 17 locations.
