Apple Reveals USDZ – A New AR File Format Made With Pixar, Adobe Bringing Support To Creative Cloud

iOS 12 has made its official debut at Apple’s WWDC 2018 event and has brought quite a lot of new toys with it. And the team kicked off discussions by focusing on how the tech conglomerate is continuing its focus on augmented technology.  It was last year at the same time, almost to the day, that Apple revealed its AR developer platform ARKit and now as then Apple’s Craig Federighi took to the stage to talk attendees through not just the rumoured ARKit 2, as reported earlier on VRFocus, but other developments.

WWDC 18The first announcement was a brand-new file format specifically for working with AR. Something developed companies such as Pixar – “some of the greatest minds in 3D.”

“AR is transformational technology.” Federighi told the audience at San Jose’s McEnery Convention Center. “Bringing experiences into the real world? It enables all kinds of new experiences, changing the way we have fun and the way we work. In iOS12 we wanted to make an easy way to experience AR across the system.”

The new file format is called USDZ (or Universal Scene Description), which has a focus on sharing content and will be able to be used or viewed in everything from internal file views, to the web browser Safari to email. Enabling you to place 3D models into the real world.  “It’s something like ‘AR quick-look’”, Federighi explained.

USDZ - Universal Scene DescriptionApple confirmed that they would be working with leading companies in 3D tools and libraries to bring USDZ support to their services. With Allegorithmic (developer of Substance), PTC, Turbosquid, Adobe, Autodesk, Sketchfab and Quixel all namechecked on stage.

“At Adobe we believe that augmented reality is an incredibly important technology. And with ARKit, Apple is by far the most powerful platform for AR.” Added Adobe‘s Executive Vice President and CTO Abhay Parasnis who appeared on stage to explain more about the company’s work on USDZ, something he described as “a pretty big deal” and confirming that USDZ support would be coming to Adobe’s Creative Cloud set of applications and services.

“With Creative Cloud designers and developers will now be able to use familiar apps – apps that they know and love, like Photoshop or Dimension – to create amazing AR content, and bring it easily via USDZ.”

Parasnis also confirmed a new Adobe creative app for iOS, specifically for designing AR-related content that will enable developers to bring in anything from text to images and video on Creative Cloud directly into a WYSIWIG AR editing environment.

VRFocus will bring you more news on the AR developments on WWDC shortly.

PTC Unveils Reality Lab to Conduct Research into VR/ AR and Mixed Reality Applications

US-based software provider PTC has been dabbling in virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality for awhile now, having previously acquired AR technology platform Vuforia back in 2015. Now PTC has announced the creation of Reality Lab, a test center led by researchers who will create immersive applications with the purpose of improving people’s interactions with their physical environments.

PTC’s Reality Lab will be overseen by MIT graduates Valentin Heun and Benjamin Reynolds, who will serve as the lab’s chief scientists. They aim to apply human-centered design and human-computer interaction to new technology, empowering people with more intuitive and practical computer user interfaces for managing the next generation of networked computer systems.

“PTC is known worldwide for its technological excellence – and a prowess for pushing the frontiers of technology to make the industrial world more efficient,” said Valentin Heun, vice president of technology, Office of the CTO, PTC. “We’re delighted to become members of the team.”

“AR connects the wealth of digital data generated by the IoT and digital transformation initiatives with the physical world in which we apply it,” said Jim Heppelmann, president and CEO, PTC in a statement. “Our new Reality Lab will enable enterprises to advance the way they serve customers, train employees, design and create products, manage their value chains, and how they compete.”

Reality Lab is located in PTC’s current headquarters in Needham, Mass. and will be a central feature at its new Boston-based headquarters expected to open in 2019.

Since the purchase of Vuforia, PTC has leveraged the platform to expand the capabilities of its ThingWorx Industrial Innovation Platform to support ARKit and ARCore, helping to bring the power of AR technology to traditional businesses like product design, manufacturing, and servicing.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of PTC, reporting back with its latest developments.

Remote IT Support Could Be Easier With AR

As anyone who has ever done any form of IT support can tell you, it is much harder when you can’t see what the customer – or family member – is seeing. Trying to rely on a description of a problem from someone who isn’t technically minded can make things difficult. The Project Chalk app might be an answer to that problem for frustrated IT support personnel and their customers.

Augmented reality (AR) app developer PTC Vuforia recently demonstrated an app named Project Chalk that works with the Vuforia technology to allow for enhanced video calling. In addition to simply seeing another person and their surroundings, the Project Chalk app makes it possible to draw on a phone or tablet screen using finger or stylus to direct someone on what button to press, or which port a cable needs to be plugged in to.

For the person trying to offer assistance, they will be able to see what the client (or family member) is pointing the phone camera at, and then make notes and drawings over the top of an image. Somewhat like sports commentators do to demonstrate various plays during games on TV.

The AR notes and drawings remain ‘tethered’ to where thy are. If you draw a line pointing to a network point, it will remain pointing at the network port, even if the phone is moved to point somewhere else.

“We allow two people to have interactions they couldn’t normally have if they weren’t in the same physical space,” Jay Wright, president of PTC’s Vuforia, said in an interview with CNET, “We think it can be used by everyone on the planet, from childhood to elderhood.” Wright said just prior to the software unveiling at Augmented World Expo.

The Project Chalk app is still in relatively early stages of development, but VRFocus will report and any further developments regarding Project Chalk and other AR innovations.
