If you haven’t played, here’s the simple breakdown of main game mode: one team defends while another tries to infiltrate and hunt down hidden objectives. We were so happy with it at launch in August 2018 that we gave it a pretty strong [7.9/10] in our full review.

Firewall Zero Hour is also slated to receive another big update on February 4th called ‘Operation: Black Dawn’ which features a new map called ‘Oil Rig’ in addition to other free content. If you don’t already own it, this is a great time to jump in on a game that typically costs $20.

‘The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners’ Coming to Quest & PSVR This Year

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners (2020) launched on PC VR headsets yesterday, and basically established itself as one of the most gritty and violent entries into the VR horror-survival genre. Now, Skydance Interactive says both PSVR and Oculus Quest users should expect the game on the respective platforms later this year.

Skydance confirmed via Twitter today that both PSVR and Quest support will arrive in 2020, with the PSVR version slated for Spring 2020 and the Quest version for Q4 2020.

We’re hoping the studio will be able to appropriately squeeze the horror-survival game onto those lower-spec platforms, as it was really a treat to play.

Outside of being a really fun physics-based romp through a zombie-infested New Orleans, Saints & Sinners also proved to be a visually detailed and atmospheric game, so it would be a shame if Quest & PSVR users miss out on the full breadth of the experience.

Although Quest users can play it right now via Oculus Link and a VR-ready computer, when it launches as a native Quest title later this year it will effectively be one of the longest and largest titles on the platform to date. In our play through, it took us 11 hours to complete, although there’s plenty of meat on the bone for at least another handful of hours of scrounging for supplies and crafting impressive weapons.

Make sure to check our full review here to find out why we gave it a resounding [9/10].

Couch Co-op Heist Game ‘Covert’ Launching on PSVR in February

Covert (2018), an action-adventure title that puts asymmetric co-op at its core, is coming to PSVR next month.

White Elk Studios says in a tweet that Covert is arriving on PSVR February 25th. White Elk is also known for the VR adventure title Eclipse: Edge of Light (2017) which recently landed on PSVR and PC VR headsets.

First launched on Oculus Go in 2018, Covert offers up asymmetric gameplay by way of a mobile companion app, which supports most Android and iOS devices.

Boasting six hours of gameplay, you play as either ‘The Thief’ in VR, or as ‘The Hacker’ on a mobile device. The objective: pull off a series of high-profile heists by using gadgets to infiltrate heavily guarded facilities in VR, and by breaching through security systems on mobile.

Although Covert is geared more towards couch co-op, online play is also possible through the free companion mobile app.

We haven’t had a chance to play Covert, however it’s currently rated at [4.1/5] stars for Oculus Go, with some detracting from that score due to a perceived issue with the game’s controls. We’ll be interested to see how White Elk has changed this up to fit the PSVR platform when it arrives next month.

Retro-inspired Adventure ‘Pixel Ripped 1995’ to Launch Spring 2020

Pixel Ripped 1995, the sequel to the nostalgia-soaked VR game Pixel Ripped 1989 (2018), is now slated to launch this spring.

Created by São Paulo-based studio ARVORE, Pixel Ripped 1995 jumps six years forward into the history of gaming, leaving behind the 8-bit handhelds of the late ’80s and dipping its toes into the era of 16-bit and 32-bit consoles—all of course following the same trippy game-within-a-game style that Pixel Ripped 1989 pioneered.

Arvore says we should expect to find plenty of homages to ’90s games; to the studio, Pixel Ripped 1995 focuses on the historical transition from 2D to 3D gaming, as it includes action RPGs, brawlers, 2D and 3D platformers, space shooters and racing games.

The game is said to include six levels, which the studio says should individually “feel like an entire new game.”

Pixel Ripped 1995 is slated to support Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift, PSVR, and SteamVR headsets when it launches this spring. If you’re planning to play on a SteamVR headset, you can add it to your Steam wishlist in the meantime.

‘Beat Saber’ Takes Top Spot as PSVR’s Most Downloaded Game of 2019

No surprises here: Beat Saber (2018) was officially the most downloaded game on PSVR in 2019, which goes for both the US and Europe.

Notably, Beat Saber has continuously taken the number one spot on the US PlayStation Store since its release on PSVR in November 2018, with the exception of a two-month break in May and June 2019 when Five Nights at Freddy’s VR (2019) temporarily dethroned the block-slashing rhythm game, forcing it down to third and fourth places respectively.

Its continued success is a testament to not only the game’s general replayability, as it now includes an even harder ‘Expert+’ mode, but to its constant influx of both free and paid DLC, which has nearly tripled the number of playable tracks available at launch on the platform. Beat Games, now a Facebook game studio, has thus far added tracks from the likes of Green Day, Panic at the Disco!, Imagine Dragons, and a number of artists under the Monstercat music label.

Check out the full lists below:

‘Job Simulator’ Goes Platinum, Selling Over 1 Million Copies to Date

Owlchemy Labs has something to celebrate, as the Google-owned VR studio announced that its tongue-in-cheek parody simulator game Job Simulator (2016) has officially broken the one million unit sales mark.

Job Simulator was a launch title for HTC Vive, PSVR, and Oculus Touch in 2016, putting it in an extremely favorable position in the early days of consumer VR. It also garnered wide-spread viral attention then too thanks to its ease of use, not to mention its madcap, object-oriented gameplay.

As one of the most visible and notable games to define the early days of consumer VR, Job Simulator decidedly makes for a pretty good metric of the industry’s overall health. It’s been a constant face on PSVR’s monthly top 10 sales list, and maintains high user review scores on both Steam and the Oculus Store. Notably, Job Simulator was also launch title on on Oculus Quest, further shoeing in VR first-timers for the studio’s patented brand of casual hilarity.

The only other studio to publicly release a similar claim is Beat Games, the Czechia-based studio behind the breakout rhythm game Beat Saber (2019), which crossed the one million mark back in March 2019. That critically doesn’t include its sales numbers from Quest, as the standalone headset launched two months after those figures were released.

Acquired by Google in 2017, Owlchemy is also known for its franchise sequel Vacation Simulator (2019) and the Emmy-nominated title Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality (2017).

‘Blood & Truth’ Hops on the VR Rhythm Train in Final Challenge DLC

Between Beat Saber, Pistol Whip, Audica, and plenty more, it’s fair to say that rhythm games are a key VR genre. And while we didn’t expect it from Blood & Truth, the gritty PSVR-exclusive shooter, we’re happy to see the game get its groove on in its latest and final ‘Challenge’ DLC update.

After launching earlier this year, Blood & Truth has seen three DLC updates which have expanded on the game’s core shooting mechanics with shooting-range challenge modes like Time Attack, Skeet Shooting, and Trick Shots.

The fourth and final DLC update brings a surprising rhythm shooting mode to the game. The update offers four stages set to songs from the title’s soundtrack; London Studio explains:

You’ll need to shoot each vinyl-shaped target that appears on the specially-created rig, with more points awarded the more on time to the beat your shot is – and how close you are to bullseyeing the target. To help you perfect your timing, a colour-coded ring will overlay onto a target when it’s time to shoot. And don’t worry about reloading: all guns in this mode have infinite bullets and are on automatic.

Chaining successful shots will activate a multiplier, which is your ticket to earning a spot on the Challenge’s online leaderboard.

The studio notes that both aim and timing contribute to your score.

But that’s not all for this update. Those who played through Blood & Truth’s solid campaign will recall the club scene where there’s an interactive DJ deck that lets you mess around with some music and effects before the fighting breaks out. In this latest update you can now get in front of an expanded version of the DJ deck, which now has six different tracks, for unlimited remixing without worrying about dodging any bullets.

Bowshooter ‘Sacralith: The Archer’s Tale’ to Launch on PSVR Soon

Sacralith: The Archer’s Tale (2018), a story-driven bowshooter from Moscow-based indie studio Odd Meter, demonstrated some relatively high polish when it was first released on PC VR headsets last year. Now, the studio says its making its way to PSVR on December 17th.

We were mightily impressed with this medieval bowshooter when it was first released on Steam back in May 2018, giving it a resounding [8.7/10] in our review.

Although it didn’t generate much press following its relatively quiet launch on PC, Sacralith: The Archer’s Tale ultimately shows a fair measure of expertise in visual polish and storytelling. It also boasts a more lifelike quality not often seen in lower budget productions, which is thanks to some pretty impressive motion capture.

Not only that, it’s also an engaging, but pretty difficult game, as you use multiple arrow types to grind down seemingly endless hordes of baddies on your way through its campaign.

While some may recoil in horror at the mere mention of teleportation, Sacralith’s node teleportation scheme is actually molded around the game in such a way that it adds to its difficulty; you’re forced to you use different vantage points to shoot down foes, which at times intentionally limits how close you can get to the steady stream of enemies.

We’re hoping Odd Meter was able to squeeze enough of that near ‘AAA’ goodness onto the more demure PS4 platform, and was also able to contend with PS Move’s tracking limitations, which sometimes makes VR archery a challenge due to sensor occlusion.

Surreal Wildlife Sim ‘Paper Beast’ Launches on PSVR Today

Paper Beast, the surreal wildlife simulation from the creator behind cult classic platformer Another World (1991), was originally slated to arrive on PSVR sometime last year. The wait is however over, as developers Pixel Reef release Paper Beast on PSVR today.

Update (March 24th, 2020): Paper Beast is launching today on PSVR. We haven’t had a chance to review, although in the meantime you should definitely check out our  20-minute demo from Gamescom 2019, which gave us a good look at what this serene, meditative simulation game is all about. Don’t miss out on both the release and gameplay trailers below:

Original Article (December 10th, 2019): Éric Chahi, lead developer and head of his newly formed studio Pixel Reef, is no stranger to the weird and oftentimes unconventional worlds, and makes no exception with Paper Beast. He’s the mind behind cinematic platformer action-adventure games such as Another World, Heart of Darkness (1998), and god-game From Dust (2011).

I got a 20-minute demo at this year’s Gamescom back in August, and while the game may seem like a strange nut to crack, I left at very least with the sense that I had truly explored new territory.

Although it’s not a game in the traditional sense, it did leave me feeling like there was a wider story to be told here. Even Chahi himself wouldn’t tell me exactly what that would be, but rather the story would be told only through the happenings in the physics-based environment; no text and no vocal cues.

Paper Beast was previously slated to launch on PSVR first, then on PS4 sometime afterwards, however the studio’s update factsheet maintains it is a PSVR-only experience.
