Major ‘Espire 1: VR Operative’ Update to Add New Weapons, Challenges & More

Espire 1: VR Operative (2019) launched late last year on all major VR headsets, offering up some very Metal Gear Solid style stealth action to VR players. Now developers Digital Lode have announced a major update, called ‘Assimilation’, which is slated to bring to the game a host of new weapons, challenges, and features next week.

Launching on May 5th, the update will be available on all supported platforms, which includes Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index, Windows VR headsets, and PSVR.

Check out the changes coming to the game below:

New Weapons

  • Vector SMG: This semi-auto weapon is an excellent choice for mid-range combat, providing for accurate and quick bursts of controlled fire with one bullet firing upon the first trigger press and the last bullet firing upon release. With an extended clip of 45 rounds and very low recoil, it is the weapon of choice for the new “SMG” weapon challenge mode.
  • Sawed-off Shotgun: Get up close and personal with this new shotgun, boasting a wider spread fore close quarters combat. Its compact design allows for the shotgun to be holstered as either a sidearm or primary weapon — and reloads via magazine clip instead of individual shells.

New Virtual Challenge Game Modes: Experienced Espire agents can also look forward to three new Virtual Challenge game modes, featuring new stealth gameplay not featured in the campaign. These new Virtual Challenges focuses on Weapon mastery, Climbing, and Intel gathering stealth skills essential to completing missions quickly and efficiently. Test your skills against players around the world with an improved leaderboard.

Weapon Challenges: Run, weave, duck, climb, jump and zipline your way through seven courses designed to test your mastery with each weapon class. Rack up the highest combo while eliminating static, moving and explosive targets, as well as enemy combatants in order to reach the top of the leaderboard.

Climbing Challenges: Overcome climbing puzzles where speed and timing is paramount to completing the course with the highest score. Make sure to avoid getting squashed by the fast-moving crushers!

Intel Challenges: Explore four completely new environments. Locate and hack intelligence from all workstations in the area, and reach the extraction point. This game mode builds on the core Espire gameplay from the campaign.

‘Arizona Sunshine’ for Quest Gets Final DLC Drop with ‘The Damned DLC’

Vertigo Games has now released its final paid DLC for its co-op zombie shooter Arizona Sunshine (2017) on Oculus Quest.

First released on PSVR and PC headsets in October 2019, ‘The Damned DLC’ is now available on Oculus Quest, priced at $5.

This, the studio tells us, includes Oculus Store cross-buy support, so buying it for Quest will also allow you play it on Rift and vice versa.

The Damned DLC precedes the events of the main story, sending you and a team of US Special Forces to reactivate the generators of a massive hydroelectric dam to restore power to the military’s nuclear missile systems.

Priced at $40, Arizona Sunshine supports all major VR headsets, including PSVR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Windows VR headsets, and Oculus Quest.

‘Dreams’ PSVR Expansion Now in Final Development Stage, Suggesting Nearby Launch

Dreams (2020) launched out of Early Access on PS4 earlier this year, and while PSVR users have been patiently awaiting any news of the promised VR support, Media Molecule has stayed fairly mum on the subject. Now the studio’s creative director & co-founder Mark Healey says Dreams is currently undergoing its final stages before release.

Healey says in a recent tweet that the long-awaited PSVR support for Dreams is done “feature/content wise,” and is currently in the bug-fixing, quality assurance, and localization phases.

Although Healey can’t give up a launch date just yet, it’s an encouraging sign that PSVR support may be right around the corner.

Furthermore, Healey showed off an example of some content coming to the VR expansion, something he says is only one of the example content pieces that are designed to be dissected, remixed and used to create new things.

Although we aren’t sure when it’s set to launch, if the studio’s public Dreams trello board is anything to go by the VR expansion will come at some point after the 2.11 update, which is said to include a new ‘Welcome Garden Gameplay Pack’.

Launched into Early Access on PS4 late last year and later officially released in February 2020, Dreams is a content creation suite that not only lets you build your own games and experiences, but also freely share and play creations from others.

It’s been a long time coming for PSVR users, who’ve been promised a powerful VR creation tool and sharing platform, something that aims to provide a measure of openness to the comparatively locked-down PS4 console.

Retro-inspired Adventure ‘Pixel Ripped 1995’ Comes to PSVR Today

Pixel Ripped 1995 (2020), the retro-gaming inspired VR adventure from indie creators ARVORE, launched on Quest and PC VR headsets late last month. Now the studio is bringing the acclaimed title to PSVR today in the US, with availability in Europe coming a week later.

Update (May 12, 2020): Pixel Ripped 1995 is coming to US-based PSVR users starting today, priced at $20. As previously announced, European availability is slated to arrive on May 19th.

Update (May 6th, 2020): Pixel Ripped 1995 is slated to arrive on PSVR May 12th in the US, and on May 19th in the EU, ARVORE says in a recent tweet. The studio says it will be revealing more updates and features soon.

We gave Pixel Ripped 1995 a very solid [8.5/10] in our full review, in part thanks to its admirable job of paying homage to the 16-bit and early 32-bit games of the mid-90s, and wrapping it in an immersive ‘game within a game’. Make sure to check out our spoiler-free review to find out more.

The original article detailing the game’s launch on PC VR & Quest follows below:

Original Article (April 15th, 2020): In the original Pixel Ripped 1989 (2018) players don a VR headset to be immersed in a VR world that itself contains authentically inspired 2D games of the era. Gameplay creatively and progressively crosses the boundaries between the 2D games and the VR game world.

The upcoming sequel, Pixel Ripped 1995, takes this same approach but further tracks the progression of gaming into the 16-bit and 32-bit eras. The game’s new launch trailer below gives a rough idea of how this works in the gameplay.

When I tried an early version of Pixel Ripped 1995 last year, I was extremely impressed with how authentically the game captures the essence of the retro-games that it draws upon. With clear homages to games like Mega Man X (1993) and Super Castlevania IV (1991), everything from the pixel art to the music felt true to form, making the games-within-a-game fun in their own right.

The indie studio behind the game, ARVORE, announced today that the Pixel Ripped 1995 release date is April 23rd for most major headsets (Quest, Rift, Steam, and Viveport). The game is also due to launch on PSVR but no specific date was given other than “very soon.” (see update)

‘Beat Saber’ Wants to Get Your Heart Pumping in New Free Track ‘FitBeat’

Beat Saber (2018) is a great tool if you’re stuck indoors and want to stay fit. To keep you up and moving, Beat Games today released their latest free track, called ‘FitBeat’, which aims to get your heart pumping to its high BMP, obstacle-laden track.

The new song, which looks to include plenty of walls to dodge to keep you on your toes, is offered through a few modes, including Standard, One Saber and 360°/90° Modes.

“We just wanted to bring you a fun song and get you pumped,” says Beat Games, which released the track today on all supported VR platforms, including SteamVR headsets, PSVR, and Oculus Quest. Like many of the early tracks, ‘FitBeat’ was created by Jaroslav Beck, the co-founder and head of music at Beat Games.

To date, Beat Saber has sold more than 2 million copies and 10 million songs via DLC, making it one of the (if not “the”) most successful VR games out there. Since being acquired by Facebook, the studio has managed to wrangle licensing deals with a number of well known artists such as Imagine Dragons, Green Day, Panic at the Disco!, and Timbaland, all of which no doubt gives them more incentive to keep the free tracks flowing.

‘No Man’s Sky’ April Update Brings Pilotable Mechs to PSVR & SteamVR Headsets

Ever since last year’s Beyond update to No Man’s Sky, which among other things brought VR support to the galactic sandbox game, there seems to be a steady stream of content still rolling out from developers Hello Games. Now, players on all platforms, including PSVR and PC VR, can pilot their very own bipedal mech.

Called the ‘Minotaur Heavy Exocraft Hybrid’, the mech gives players a new way of exploring planets and collecting resources.

Arriving with a jetpack, immunity to all planetary hazards, upgradable mining lasers, and the ability to outfit the Exocraft with solar panels to recharge their engines during daylight, the Minotaur certainly sounds like something worth researching an unlocking.

As an added bonus, VR players get an immersive first-person, in-cockpit view and to joysticks to control the mech’s movement.

This month’s Exo Mech update follows February’s Living Ship update which brought to the game bio-mechnical crafts that you can grow and fly your own living space ship.

VR Puzzler ‘FORM’ Launches on PSVR Today

FORM, the VR puzzle game that made a splash on PC VR headsets back in 2017, is now available on PSVR starting today.

Update (April 7th, 2020): FORM is now live on PSN, priced at $19. Since it’s an object-heavy puzzle game, PS Move (and of course PS Camera) is required to play.

Original Article (March 28th, 2020): Originally slated to arrive on the platform back in 2018, FORM is now officially coming to PSVR on April 7th, 2020.

We really enjoyed FORM when we played it for our review of the game, giving it a solid [8.5/10] for its interesting, alien-like 3D puzzles that do an awesome job of demanding curiosity and experimentation.

We called it “like stepping into a machine of pure novelty, and it manages to deliver its intuitive puzzles without the need of a tutorial, i.e. no condescending robot voice guiding you through the world.”

Granted, it’s a particularly short game at a little over an hour of gameplay, and while we wish it were longer, it still makes for a must-play if you can nab it at the right price.

Timbaland ‘Beat Saber’ Music Pack Now Available on All Platforms

New music for Beat Saber (2018) seems to be flowing in at faster clip ever since Facebook acquired Beat Games, the Czech Republic-based VR studio. Now, the creators have announced that a new music pack from rapper & producer Timbaland is set to arrive next week.

Update (March 26th, 2020): The latest DLC for Beat Saber, the Timabland Music Pack, is now available on all platforms, priced at $8 for five songs, or $2 for individual songs.

The album of original tracks made for the game launched at the same time, and we’ve filled out the original article below with links to the album and songs on Spotify if you’d like to preview the music before purchasing.

Original Article (March 17th, 2020): Timbaland created music specifically for Beat Saber, which includes song co-created with Bruno Martini, Kaydence, Common Strangers, and Sid Tipton.

The pack will be available for $8 (or $2 per song) across all platforms, which includes Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest, SteamVR-compatible headsets, and PSVR.

Google’s ‘Tilt Brush’ Finally Comes to PSVR Today

Google has taken its sweet time bringing its VR creation app Tilt Brush (2016) to PSVR, although having recently slimmed down the app to fit on the modest mobile chipset of Oculus Quest may have given the company needed incentive to finally launch on PSVR. It’s available starting today.

Update (March 27th, 2020): Tilt Brush for PSVR lands on the PlayStation Store today. Original creator Patrick Hackett says in PS blogpost that the PSVR version will feature a Showcase of art and the ability to upload creations to Google Poly, Google’s online 3D asset viewing platform.

US residents will also be able to buy a PlayStation Move Motion Controller Two-Pack & Tilt Brush Bundle will be available exclusively on PlayStation Direct for $100 starting today, which includes two PS Move controllers and a digital code for Tilt Brush.

Check out the new trailer below:

Original Article (March 6th, 2020): PSN data obtained by Gamstat indicates that a listing for Tilt Brush has been recently created for America, Europe and Japan regions.

All games on the PlayStation Store have an identifier code which is listed in the game’s URL. Gamstat has recovered the following store identifiers for Tilt Brush:

America – CUSA18125_00
Europe – CUSA18231_00
Japan – CUSA18283_00

An image was also scraped from the listing, noting that Sony Interactive Entertainment is the app’s publisher.

Although Google has yet to officially announce Tilt Brush for PSVR, the reported data seems to strongly indicate a nearby release on the platform.

Originally launched on PC VR headsets in 2016, Google’s Tilt Brush has become fully-featured VR creation tool, boasting integration with Google’s other 3D VR creation tool Blocks (2017), and the ability to export creations to Sketchfab Google Poly.

It’s uncertain how much of this interoperability the PSVR version will retain, or what Google has done to mitigate the platform’s less accurate motion controls, although it appears we’ll be finding out soon enough.

Special thanks to Twitter user Max Ledroom for pointing out the news.

We had a chance to preview the game on Oculus Quest earlier this week, and it proved to be not only to serve up engaging and cleverly-built puzzles, but an engrossing visual experience to compliment its dark, Lovecraftian story. Although we haven’t played on PSVR or PC VR headsets yet, the Quest version left us sufficiently wowed enough to say that it’s set a new bar for VR puzzle games.
